Weak rank rigidity for groups with a navigable path system

We show that groups with a mild form of non-positive curvature (a navigable path system) satisfy the weak rank rigidity conjecture: they either have linear divergence or a Morse element. This class includes discrete groups of projective automorphisms of open convex cones, Helly groups (answering a question of Genevois), Coxeter groups, weak Garside groups (in particular Deligne's groups and fundamental groups of Salvetti complexes of oriented matroids), hierarchically hyperbolic groups, and other examples. Along the way, we show that those groups satisfy the Morse local-to-global property, providing a unified proof for the whole class. In the metric setting, the same condition of non-positive curvature allows to provide a local definition (that is, in a sense, optimal) of rank one/Morse geodesics, mirroring the one using parallel Jacobi fields from Riemannian geometry; to deduce linearity of divergence from linearity on a sequence; to obtain new cases in which Morse geodesics are strongly contracting. The main new tool introduced is the generalised contraction space, a hyperbolic space that encodes the negative curvature of a given space.

Almost planar finitely presented groups

We show that finitely presented groups which admit $k$-planar Cayley graphs contain finite-index subgroups with planar Cayley graphs. More generally, we answer a question of Georgakopoulos and Papasoglu in the special case of coarsely simply connected graphs: a $k$-planar, coarsely simply connected, connected, locally finite, quasi-transitive graph is quasi-isometric to a planar graph.

Weak Morse properties in spaces with bounded combings

We relate two notions of non-positive curvature: bounded combings and the Morse local-to-global (MLTG) property (in its weak and strong version). The latter is a property of a space that has been shown to eliminate pathological behavior of Morse geodesics. We showcase its importance in a survey in the appendix. We show that having a bounded combing implies the weak MLTG property. If the Morse boundary of a group is sigma-compact, we show that the weak MLTG property is upgraded to the (strong) MLTG property.

Stable cylinders and fine structures for hyperbolic groups and curve graphs

In 1995, Rips and Sela asked if torsionfree hyperbolic groups admit globally stable cylinders. We establish this property for all residually finite hyperbolic groups and curve graphs of finite-type surfaces. These cylinders are fine objects, and the core of our approach is to upgrade the hyperbolic space to one with improved fine properties via a generalisation of Sageev's construction. The methods also let us prove that curve graphs of surfaces admit equivariant quasiisometric embeddings in finite products of quasitrees.

Graphs and groups with unique geodesics

A connected graph is called \emph{geodetic} if there is a unique geodesic between each pair of vertices. In this paper we prove that if a finitely generated group admits a Cayley graph which is geodetic, then the group must be virtually free. Before now, it was open whether finitely generated and geodetic implied hyperbolic. In fact we prove something more general: if a quasi-transitive locally finite connected undirected graph is geodetic then it is quasi-isometric to a tree. Our main tool is to define a \emph{boundary} of a graph and understand how the local behaviour influences it when the graph is geodetic. Our results unify, and represent significant progress on, research initiated by Ore, Shapiro, and Madlener and Otto.

Regularity of quasigeodesics characterises hyperbolicity

We characterise hyperbolic groups in terms of quasigeodesics in the Cayley graph forming regular languages. We also obtain a quantitative characterisation of hyperbolicity of geodesic metric spaces by the non-existence of certain local (3,0)-quasigeodesic loops. As an application we make progress towards a question of Shapiro regarding groups admitting a uniquely geodesic Cayley graph.

Sigma-compactness of Morse boundaries in Morse local-to-global groups and applications to stationary measures

We show that the Morse boundary of a Morse local-to-global group is $σ$-compact. Moreover, we show that the converse holds for small cancellation groups. As an application, we show that the Morse boundary of a non-hyperbolic, Morse local-to-global group that has contraction does not admit a non-trivial stationary measure. In fact, we show that any stationary measure on a geodesic boundary of such a groups needs to assign measure zero to the Morse boundary. Unlike previous results, we do not need any assumptions on the stationary measures considered.

Hyperbolic models for CAT(0) spaces

We introduce two new tools for studying CAT(0) spaces: \emph{curtains}, versions of cubical hyperplanes; and the \emph{curtain model}, a counterpart of the curve graph. These tools shed new light on CAT(0) spaces, allowing us to prove a dichotomy of a rank-rigidity flavour, establish Ivanov-style rigidity theorems for isometries of the curtain model, find isometry-invariant copies of its Gromov boundary in the visual boundary of the underlying CAT(0) space, and characterise rank-one isometries both in terms of their action on the curtain model and in terms of curtains. Finally, we show that the curtain model is universal for WPD actions over all groups acting properly on the CAT(0) space.

Separability in Morse local-to-global groups

We show that in a Morse local-to-global group where stable subgroups are separable, the product of any stable subgroups is separable. As an application, we show that the product of stable subgroups in virtually special groups is separable.

Constructing metric spaces from systems of walls

We give a general procedure for constructing metric spaces from systems of partitions. This generalises and provides analogues of Sageev's construction of dual CAT(0) cube complexes for the settings of hyperbolic and injective metric spaces. As applications, we produce a ``universal'' hyperbolic action for groups with strongly contracting elements, and show that many groups with ``coarsely cubical'' features admit geometric actions on injective metric spaces. In an appendix with Davide Spriano, we show that a large class of groups have an infinite-dimensional space of quasimorphisms.

Equivariant hierarchically hyperbolic structures for 3-manifold groups via quasimorphisms

Behrstock, Hagen, and Sisto classified 3-manifold groups admitting a hierarchically hyperbolic space structure. However, these structures were not always equivariant with respect to the group. In this paper, we classify 3-manifold groups admitting equivariant hierarchically hyperbolic structures. The key component of our proof is that the admissible groups introduced by Croke and Kleiner always admit equivariant hierarchically hyperbolic structures. For non-geometric graph manifolds, this is contrary to a conjecture of Behrstock, Hagen, and Sisto and also contrasts with results about CAT(0) cubical structures on these groups. Perhaps surprisingly, our arguments involve the construction of suitable quasimorphisms on the Seifert pieces, in order to construct actions on quasi-lines.

Unbounded domains in hierarchically hyperbolic groups

We investigate unbounded domains in hierarchically hyperbolic groups and obtain constraints on the possible hierarchical structures. Using these insights, we characterise the structures of virtually abelian HHGs and show that the class of HHGs is not closed under finite extensions. This provides a strong answer to the question of whether being an HHG is invariant under quasiisometries. Along the way, we show that infinite torsion groups are not HHGs. By ruling out pathological behaviours, we are able to give simpler, direct proofs of the rank-rigidity and omnibus subgroup theorems for HHGs. This involves extending our techniques so that they apply to all subgroups of HHGs.

Regularity of Morse geodesics and growth of stable subgroups

We prove that Morse local-to-global groups grow exponentially faster than their infinite index stable subgroups. This generalizes a result of Dahmani, Futer, and Wise in the context of quasi-convex subgroups of hyperbolic groups to a broad class of groups that contains the mapping class group, CAT(0) groups, and the fundamental groups of closed 3-manifolds. To accomplish this, we develop a theory of automatic structures on Morse geodesics in Morse local-to-global groups. Other applications of these automatic structures include a description of stable subgroups in terms of regular languages, rationality of the growth of stable subgroups, density in the Morse boundary of the attracting fixed points of Morse elements, and containment of the Morse boundary inside the limit set of any infinite normal subgroup.

Hierarchically hyperbolic groups and uniform exponential growth

We give several sufficient conditions for uniform exponential growth in the setting of virtually torsion-free hierarchically hyperbolic groups. For example, any hierarchically hyperbolic group that is also acylindrically hyperbolic has uniform exponential growth. In addition, we provide a quasi-isometric characterization of hierarchically hyperbolic groups without uniform exponential growth. To achieve this, we gain new insights on the structure of certain classes of hierarchically hyperbolic groups. Our methods give a new unified proof of uniform exponential growth for several examples of groups with notions of non-positive curvature. In particular, we obtain the first proof of uniform exponential growth for certain groups that act geometrically on CAT(0) cubical spaces of dimension 3 or more. Under additional hypotheses, we show that a quantitative Tits alternative holds for hierarchically hyperbolic groups.

The local-to-global property for Morse quasi-geodesics

We show the mapping class group, CAT(0) groups, the fundamental groups of closed 3-manifolds, and certain relatively hyperbolic groups have a local-to-global property for Morse quasi-geodesics. This allows us to generalize combination theorems of Gitik for quasiconvex subgroups of hyperbolic groups to the stable subgroups of these groups. In the case of the mapping class group, this gives combination theorems for convex cocompact subgroups. We show a number of additional consequences of this local-to-global property, including a Cartan-Hadamard type theorem for detecting hyperbolicity locally and discreteness of translation length of conjugacy classes of Morse elements with a fixed gauge. To prove the relatively hyperbolic case, we develop a theory of deep points for local quasi-geodesics in relatively hyperbolic spaces, extending work of Hruska.

Convexity in hierarchically hyperbolic spaces

Hierarchically hyperbolic spaces (HHSs) are a large class of spaces that provide a unified framework for studying the mapping class group, right-angled Artin and Coxeter groups, and many 3--manifold groups. We investigate strongly quasiconvex subsets in this class and characterize them in terms of their contracting properties, relative divergence, the coarse median structure, and the hierarchical structure itself. Along the way, we obtain new tools to study HHSs, including two new equivalent definitions of hierarchical quasiconvexity and a version of the bounded geodesic image property for strongly quasconvex subsets. Utilizing our characterization, we prove that the hyperbolically embedded subgroups of hierarchically hyperbolic groups are precisely those which are almost malnormal and strongly quasiconvex, producing a new result in the case of the mapping class group. We also apply our characterization to study strongly quasiconvex subsets in several specific examples of HHSs. We show that while many commonly studied HHSs have the property that that every strongly quasiconvex subset is either hyperbolic or coarsely covers the entire space, right-angled Coxeter groups exhibit a wide variety of strongly quasiconvex subsets.

Hierarchical hyperbolicity of hyperbolic-2-decomposable groups

Let G be a graph of hyperbolic groups with 2-ended edge groups. We show that G is hierarchically hyperbolic if and only if G has no distorted infinite cyclic subgroup. More precisely, we show that G is hierarchically hyperbolic if and only if G does not contain certain quotients of Baumslag-Solitar groups. As a consequence, we obtain several new results about this class, such as quadratic isoperimetric inequality and finite asymptotic dimension.
