On the Asymptotic Linear Convergence Speed of Anderson Acceleration Applied to ADMM

Empirical results show that Anderson acceleration (AA) can be a powerful mechanism to improve the asymptotic linear convergence speed of the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) when ADMM by itself converges linearly. However, theoretical results to quantify this improvement do not exist yet. In this paper we explain and quantify this improvement in linear asymptotic convergence speed for the special case of a stationary version of AA applied to ADMM. We do so by considering the spectral properties of the Jacobians of ADMM and the stationary version of AA evaluated at the fixed point, where the coefficients of the stationary AA method are computed such that its asymptotic linear convergence factor is optimal. The optimal linear convergence factors of this stationary AA-ADMM method are computed analytically or by optimization, based on previous work on optimal stationary AA acceleration. Using this spectral picture and those analytical results, our approach provides new insight into how and by how much the stationary AA method can improve the asymptotic linear convergence factor of ADMM. Numerical results also indicate that the optimal linear convergence factor of the stationary AA methods gives a useful estimate for the asymptotic linear convergence speed of the non-stationary AA method that is used in practice.

Few-Mode Fiber Coupling Efficiency for Free-Space Optical Communication

Few-mode fiber is a significant component of free-space optical communication at the receiver to obtain achievable high coupling efficiency. A theoretical coupling model from the free-space optical communication link to a few-mode fiber is proposed based on a scale-adapted set of Laguerre-Gaussian modes. It is found that the coupling efficiency of various modes behaves differently in the presence of atmospheric turbulence or random jitter. Based on this model, the optimal coupling geometry parameter is obtained to maximize the coupling efficiency of the selected mode of few-mode fiber. The communication performance with random jitter is investigated. It is shown that the few-mode fiber has better bit-error rate performance than single-mode fiber, especially in high signal-to-noise ratio regimes.

DEMC: A Deep Dual-Encoder Network for Denoising Monte Carlo Rendering

In this paper, we present DEMC, a deep Dual-Encoder network to remove Monte Carlo noise efficiently while preserving details. Denoising Monte Carlo rendering is different from natural image denoising since inexpensive by-products (feature buffers) can be extracted in the rendering stage. Most of them are noise-free and can provide sufficient details for image reconstruction. However, these feature buffers also contain redundant information, which makes Monte Carlo denoising different from natural image denoising. Hence, the main challenge of this topic is how to extract useful information and reconstruct clean images. To address this problem, we propose a novel network structure, Dual-Encoder network with a feature fusion sub-network, to fuse feature buffers firstly, then encode the fused feature buffers and a noisy image simultaneously, and finally reconstruct a clean image by a decoder network. Compared with the state-of-the-art methods, our model is more robust on a wide range of scenes and is able to generate satisfactory results in a significantly faster way.

Comparison of Machine Learning Methods for Predicting Karst Spring Discharge in North China

The quantitative analyses of karst spring discharge typically rely on physical-based models, which are inherently uncertain. To improve the understanding of the mechanism of spring discharge fluctuation and the relationship between precipitation and spring discharge, three machine learning methods were developed to reduce the predictive errors of physical-based groundwater models, simulate the discharge of Longzici Spring's karst area, and predict changes in the spring on the basis of long time series precipitation monitoring and spring water flow data from 1987 to 2018. The three machine learning methods included two artificial neural networks (ANNs), namely, multilayer perceptron (MLP) and long short-term memory-recurrent neural network (LSTM-RNN), and support vector regression (SVR). A normalization method was introduced for data preprocessing to make the three methods robust and computationally efficient. To compare and evaluate the capability of the three machine learning methods, the mean squared error (MSE), mean absolute error (MAE), and root-mean-square error (RMSE) were selected as the performance metrics for these methods. Simulations showed that MLP reduced MSE, MAE, and RMSE to 0.0010, 0.0254, and 0.0318, respectively. Meanwhile, LSTM-RNN reduced MSE to 0.0010, MAE to 0.0272, and RMSE to 0.0329. Moreover, the decrease in MSE, MAE, and RMSE were 0.0910, 0.1852, and 0.3017, respectively, for SVR. Results indicated that MLP performed slightly better than LSTM-RNN, and MLP and LSTM-RNN performed considerably better than SVR. Furthermore, ANNs were demonstrated to be prior machine learning methods for simulating and predicting karst spring discharge.

On the capacity dimension of the boundary of CAT(0) spaces

In this paper, we study the capacity dimension of the boundary of $CAT(0)$ spaces. We first compare the two metrics on the boundary of a hyperbolic $CAT(0)$ space, i.e., the visual metric and the conical metric, and prove that they give the same capacity dimension of the boundary. Then we study the capacity dimension of the boundary of buildings, which is an important class of $CAT(0)$ spaces. Finally, we give a possible method to prove the finiteness of the asymptotic dimension of $CAT(0)$ spaces.

Phase evolution and thermal stability of high Curie temperature BiScO$_3$-PbTiO$_3$-Pb(Cd${1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_3$ ceramics near MPB

Piezoelectric and ferroelectric ceramics with a high Curie temperature (Tc) have attracted a growing attention owning to their applications under severe environments. In this work, phase structure, dielectric, ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties of (0.975-x)BiScO3-xPbTiO3-0.025Pb(Cd1/3Nb2/3)O3 ceramics (x = 0.58-0.64) were studied. A composition-induced structural transformation occurs from rhombohedral phase to tetragonal phase through an intermediate monoclinic phase with the increasing PT concentration. The relationship between structure and electrical properties of the system were discussed. The BS-xPT-PCN system near the morphotropic phase boundary (x = 0.62) exhibits excellent piezoelectric and ferroelectric performances with d33 = 508 pC/N, kp = 56%, and Pr = 40 uC/cm2. The high-temperature piezoelectricity of the sample with MPB (x = 0.62) was characterized by an in situ XRD. The excellent thermal stability of the crystal structure and the piezoelectric property indicate that the BS-xPT-PCN system is a promising candidate for high temperature piezoelectric applications.

Observation of multi-component atomic Schrödinger cat states of up to 20 qubits

We report on deterministic generation of 18-qubit genuinely entangled Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state and multi-component atomic Schrödinger cat states of up to 20 qubits on a quantum processor, which features 20 superconducting qubits interconnected by a bus resonator. By engineering a one-axis twisting Hamiltonian enabled by the resonator-mediated interactions, the system of qubits initialized coherently evolves to an over-squeezed, non-Gaussian regime, where atomic Schrödinger cat states, i.e., superpositions of atomic coherent states including GHZ state, appear at specific time intervals in excellent agreement with theory. With high controllability, we are able to take snapshots of the dynamics by plotting quasidistribution $Q$-functions of the 20-qubit atomic cat states, and globally characterize the 18-qubit GHZ state which yields a fidelity of $0.525\pm0.005$ confirming genuine eighteen-partite entanglement. Our results demonstrate the largest entanglement controllably created so far in solid state architectures, and the process of generating and detecting multipartite entanglement may promise applications in practical quantum metrology, quantum information processing and quantum computation.

Localized polarons and conductive charge carriers: understanding CaCu$_{3}$Ti$_{4}$O$_{12}$ over a broad temperature range

CaCu$_{3}$Ti$_{4}$O$_{12}$ (CCTO) has a large dielectric permittivity that is independent of the probing frequency near the room temperature, which complicated due to the existence of several dynamic processes. Here, we consider the combined effects of localized charge carriers (polarons) and thermally activated charge carriers using a recently proposed statistical model to fit and understand the permittivity of CCTO measured at different frequencies over the whole temperature range accessible by our experiments. We found that the small permittivity at the lowest temperature is related to polaron frozen, while at higher temperatures the rapid increase is associated with the thermal excitation of polarons inducing the Maxwell-Wagner effect, and the final increase of the permittivity is attributed to the thermally activated conductivity. Such analysis enables us to separate the contributions from localized polarons and conductive charge carriers and quantify their activation energies.

Electric dipole sheets in BaTiO$_{3}$/BaZrO$_{3}$ superlattices

We investigate two-dimensional electric dipole sheets in the superlattice made of BaTiO$_{3}$ and BaZrO$_{3}$ using first-principles-based Monte-Carlo simulations and density functional calculations. Electric dipole domains and complex patterns are observed and the complex dipole structures with various symmetries (e.g. Pma2, Cmcm and Pmc2_{1}) are further confirmed by density functional calculations, which are found to be almost degenerate in energy with the ferroelectric ground state of the Amm2 symmetry, therefore strongly resembling magnetic sheets. More complex dipole patterns, including vortices and anti-vortices, are also observed, which may constitute the intermediate states that overcome the high energy barrier of different polarization orientations previously predicted by Lebedev\onlinecite{Lebedev2013}. We also show that such system possesses large electrostrictive effects that may be technologically important.

Prediction of novel interface-driven spintronic effects

The recently-proposed coupling between the angular momentum density and magnetic moment [A. Raeliarijaona et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 137205 (2013)] is shown here to result in the prediction of (i) novel spin currents generated by an electrical current and (ii) new electrical currents induced by a spin current in systems possessing specific interfaces between two different materials. Some of these spin (electrical) currents can be reversed near the interface by reversing the applied electrical (spin) current. Similarities and differences between these novel spintronic effects and the well-known spin Hall and inverse spin Hall effects are also discussed.

Ultrafast switching of the electric polarization and magnetic chirality in BiFeO3 by an electric field

Using a first-principles-based effective Hamiltonians within molecular dynamics simulations, we discover that applying an electric field that is opposite to the initial direction of the polarization results in a switching of both the polarization and the magnetic chirality vector of multiferroic BiFeO3 at an ultrafast pace (namely of the order of picoseconds). We discuss the origin of such a double ultrafast switching, which is found to involve original intermediate magnetic states and may hold promise for designing various devices.

Novel magnetic arrangement and structural phase transition induced by spin-lattice coupling in multiferroics

Using an effective Hamiltonian of mutiferroic BiFeO$_3$ (BFO) as a toy model, we explore the effect of the coefficient, C, characterizing the strength of the spin-current interaction, on physical properties. We observe that for larger C values and below a critical temperature, the magnetic moments organize themselves in a novel cycloid which propagates along a low-symmetry direction and is associated with a structural phase transition from polar rhombohedral to a polar triclinic state. We emphasize that both of these magnetic and structural transitions are results of a remarkable self-organization of different solutions of the spin-current model.

Terahertz dielectric response and coupled dynamics of ferroelectrics and multiferroics from effective Hamiltonian simulations

Ferroelectric and multiferroic materials form an important class of functional materials. Over the last twenty years, first-principles-based effective Hamiltonian approaches have been successfully developed to simulate these materials. In recent years, effective Hamiltonian approaches were further combined with molecular dynamics methods to investigate terahertz dynamical properties of various perovskites. With this combination, a variety of ferroelectric and multiferroic materials, including BaTiO_{3}, Ba(Sr,Ti)O_{3}, Pb(Zr,Ti)O_{3}, BiFeO_{3}, and SrTiO_{3} bulks and films have been simulated, which led to the understanding of complex phenomena and discovery of novel effects. In this review, we first provide technical details about effective Hamiltonians and molecular dynamics simulation. Then, we present applications of the combination of these two techniques to different perovskites. Finally, we also briefly discuss possible future directions of this approach.

The Meservey-Tedrov effect in FSF double tunneling junctions

Double tunneling junctions of ferromagnet-superconductor-ferromagnet electrodes (FSF) show a jump in the conductance when a parallel magnetic field reverses the magnetization of one of the ferromagnetic electrodes. This change is generally attributed to the spin-valve effect or to pair breaking in the superconductor because of spin accumulation. In this paper it is shown that the Meservey-Tedrov effect causes a similar change in the conductance since the magnetic field changes the energy spectrum of the quasi-particles in the superconductor. A reversal of the bias reverses the sign in the conductance jump.

Spin dependent transport in ferromagnetic/superconductor/ferromagnetic single electron transistor

Ferromagnetic single electron transistors with Al islands and orthogonal ferromagnetic leads (Co) are fabricated using ebeam lithography followed by shadow evaporation techniques. I-V characteristics exhibit typical single electron tunneling effects. Transport measurements performed in external magnetic field show that, when the two ferromagnetic leads are in antiparallel configuration, spin imbalance leads to a suppression of superconductivity.
