Degree of irrationality of properly elliptic surfaces

In this paper, we study the degree of irrationality of properly elliptic surfaces with a section. We prove $\min\{χ(\mathcal O_S),\,2\operatorname{gon}(C)\} \leq \operatorname{irr}(S) \leq 2\operatorname{gon}(C)$. The lower bound is obtained from the canonical bundle formula and the Cayley--Bacharach property. We show that this bound is sharp. We also study the behavior of the degree of irrationality in moduli. A very general properly elliptic surface with a section over a curve of genus at least two has degree of irrationality at least four, whereas special families with $χ(\mathcal O_S)=1$ or $2$ have degree two. Finally, we investigate properly elliptic surfaces with $χ(\mathcal O_S)=0$, proving a generic lower bound of four and showing that $\operatorname{irr}(C\times E)=4$ for every hyperelliptic curve $C$ of genus at least two and every elliptic curve $E$. Our paper also includes special properly elliptic surfaces without a section. For Dolgachev surfaces, we exclude degree two for a very general member and construct special examples of degrees two and three.

Galois self-covers of projective spaces and essential dimensions

We give the structure theorem of Galois self-covers $f: \mathbf{P}^n \to \mathbf{P}^n$. As an application, we show that the essential dimension of every such nontrivial cover attains its maximum possible value $n$. As another application, we prove that the pair $(\mathbf{P}^n, R_f/(q-1))$ is log Calabi-Yau as conjectured by Gongyo, where $R_f$ is the ramification divisor and we write $f^*\mathcal{O}(1) = \mathcal{O}(q)$.

Essential dimensions of polarized endomorphisms of certain algebraic surfaces

Let $f: X \to X$ be a polarized endomorphism of a smooth projective surface which is birationally ruled. We answer a question of Kollár and Zhuang, in the affirmative, on the incompressibility of $f$, under the assumption that $f$ is Galois and an explicit lower bound of deg$(f)$ depending only on $X$. We also give examples showing the optimality of such a lower bound.

Essential dimensions of polarized endomorphisms of abelian varieties

Let $f$ be a polarized endomorphism of an abelian variety $A$. Kollár and Zhuang asked whether the essential dimension $\mathrm{ed}(f)$ equals $\mathrm{dim}(A)$. We provide counterexamples to this question. Instead, we prove that, under the hypothesis that every subtorus of $A$ is $f$-preperiodic up to translation (a condition arising from the dynamical Manin--Mumford conjecture), we have $\mathrm{ed}(f^s)=\mathrm{dim}(A)$ for some integer $s>0$. Our examples also show the necessity of both the hypothesis and iteration. We also give an affirmative answer to Kollár and Zhuang's original question when $A$ is a simple abelian surface and $f$ is not $2$-polarized.

Log Calabi-Yau structure of algebaic varieties admitting a polarized endomorphism

Let $X$ be a normal projective variety admitting a polarized endomorphism $f$, i.e., $f^*H\sim qH$ for some ample divisor $H$ and integer $q>1$. Then Broustet and Gongyo proposed the conjecture that $X$ is of Calabi-Yau type (CY for short), i.e., $(X,Δ)$ is lc for some effective $\mathbb{Q}$-divisor $Δ$ and $K_X+Δ\sim_{\mathbb{Q}}0$. We prove the conjecture when $X$ is a Gorenstein terminal 3-fold, extending the result of Sheng Meng for smooth threefolds. We then study the singularity type and CY property for $(X,Δ+\frac{R_Δ}{q-1})$ when $(X,Δ)$ is an $f$-pair, i.e., $K_X+Δ=f^*(K_X+Δ)+R_Δ$ with $Δ, R_Δ$ being effective. In particular, we show: (1) $K_X + \frac{R_f}{q-1}$ is $\mathbb{Q}$-Cartier and numerically trivial when $X$ is a $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial (or of klt type) $3$-fold; (2) $(X, \frac{R_{f}}{q-1})$ is log Calabi-Yau when $X$ is a surface with the Picard number $ρ(X)>1$ or $f^{-s}(P)=P$ for some prime divisor $P$ and $s>0$.

Polynomial log-volume growth in slow dynamics and the GK-dimensions of twisted homogeneous coordinate rings

Let f be a zero entropy automorphism of a compact Kähler manifold X. We study the polynomial log-volume growth Plov(f) of f in light of the dynamical filtrations introduced in our previous work with T.-C. Dinh. We obtain new upper bounds and lower bounds of Plov(f). As a corollary, we completely determine Plov(f) when dim X = 3, extending a result of Artin--Van den Bergh for surfaces. When X is projective, Plov(f) + 1 coincides with the Gelfand--Kirillov dimensions GKdim(X,f) of the twisted homogeneous coordinate rings associated to (X,f). Reformulating these results for GKdim(X,f), we improve Keeler's bounds of GKdim(X,f) and provide effective upper bounds of GKdim(X,f) which only depend on dim X.

On the virtual invariants of zero entropy groups of compact Kähler manifolds

Let $X$ be a compact Kähler manifold. We study subgroups $G \le \mathrm{Aut}(X)$ of biholomorphic automorphisms of zero entropy when $\mathrm{Aut}^0(X)$ is compact (e.g. when $\mathrm{Aut}^0(X)$ is trivial). We show that the virtual derived length $\ell_{\mathrm{vir}}(G)$ of $G$ satisfies $\ell_{\mathrm{vir}}(G) \le \dim X -κ(X)$, where $κ(X)$ is the Kodaira dimension of $X$. Modulo the main conjecture of our previous work concerning the essential nilpotency class, we obtain the same upper bound $c_{\mathrm{vir}}(G) \le \dim X -κ(X)$ for the virtual nilpotency class $c_{\mathrm{vir}}(G)$, together with a geometric description of the $G$-action on $X$ when the equality holds.

Morphisms from a very general hypersurface

Let $X$ be a very general hypersurface of degree $d$ in the projective $(n+1)$-space with $n \ge 3$, and $f: X \to Y$ a non-birational surjective morphism to a normal projective variety $Y$. We first prove that $Y$ is a klt Fano variety if ${\rm deg} \, f \ge C$ for some constant $C = C(n, d)$ depending only on $n$ and $d$. Next we prove an optimal upper bound ${\rm deg} \, f \le {\rm deg} \, X$ provided that $Y$ is factorial, ${\rm deg} \, f$ is prime and ${\rm deg} \, f \ge E(n)$ for some constant $E(n)$ (with $E(n) = n(n+1)$ when $Y$ is smooth). As a corollary, we show that $Y\cong {\bf P}^n$ under some conditions on $Y$ and ${\rm deg} \, f$.

Endomorphisms of quasi-projective varieties -- towards Zariski dense orbit and Kawaguchi-Silverman conjectures

Let $X$ be a quasi-projective variety and $f\colon X\to X$ a finite surjective endomorphism. We consider Zariski Dense Orbit Conjecture (ZDO), and Adelic Zariski Dense Orbit Conjecture (AZO). We consider also Kawaguchi-Silverman Conjecture (KSC) asserting that the (first) dynamical degree $d_1(f)$ of $f$ equals the arithmetic degree $α_f(P)$ at a point $P$ having Zariski dense $f$-forward orbit. Assuming $X$ is a smooth affine surface, such that the log Kodaira dimension $\barκ(X)$ is non-negative (resp. the étale fundamental group $π_1^{\text{ét}}(X)$ is infinite), we confirm AZO, (hence) ZDO, and KSC (when $\operatorname{deg}(f)\geq 2$) (resp. AZO and hence ZDO). We also prove ZDO (resp. AZO and hence ZDO) for every surjective endomorphism on any projective variety with ''larger'' first dynamical degree (resp. every dominant endomorphism of any semiabelian variety).

Structures theorems and applications of non-isomorphic surjective endomorphisms of smooth projective threefolds

Let $f:X\to X$ be a non-isomorphic (i.e., $\text{deg } f>1$) surjective endomorphism of a smooth projective threefold $X$. We prove that any birational minimal model program becomes $f$-equivariant after iteration, provided that $f$ is $δ$-primitive. Here $δ$-primitive means that there is no $f$-equivariant (after iteration) dominant rational map $π:X\dashrightarrow Y$ to a positive lower-dimensional projective variety $Y$ such that the first dynamical degree remains unchanged. This way, we further determine the building blocks of $f$. As the first application, we prove the Kawaguchi-Silverman conjecture for every non-isomorphic surjective endomorphism of a smooth projective threefold. As the second application, we reduce the Zariski dense orbit conjecture for $f$ to a terminal threefold with only $f$-equivariant Fano contractions.

Jordan property for automorphism groups of compact spaces in Fujiki's class $C$

Let $X$ be a compact complex space in Fujiki's Class $C$. We show that the group $Aut(X)$ of all biholomorphic automorphisms of $X$ has the Jordan property: there is a (Jordan) constant $J = J(X)$ such that any finite subgroup $G\le Aut(X)$ has an abelian subgroup $H\le G$ with the index $[G:H]\le J$. This extends, with a quite different method, the result of Prokhorov and Shramov for Moishezon threefolds.

Kawaguchi-Silverman conjecture for certain surjective endomorphisms

We prove the Kawaguchi-Silverman conjecture (KSC), about the equality of arithmetic degree and dynamical degree, for every surjective endomorphism of any (possibly singular) projective surface. In high dimensions, we show that KSC holds for every surjective endomorphism of any $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial Kawamata log terminal projective variety admitting an int-amplified endomorphism, provided that KSC holds for any surjective endomorphism with the ramification divisor being totally invariant and irreducible. In particular, we show that KSC holds for every surjective endomorphism of any rationally connected smooth projective threefold admitting an int-amplified endomorphism. The main ingredients are the equivariant minimal model program, the effectiveness of the anti-canonical divisor and a characterization of toric pairs.

Non-density of points of small arithmetic degrees

Given a surjective endomorphism $f: X \to X$ on a projective variety over a number field, one can define the arithmetic degree $α_f(x)$ of $f$ at a point $x$ in $X$. The Kawaguchi - Silverman Conjecture (KSC) predicts that any forward $f$-orbit of a point $x$ in $X$ at which the arithmetic degree $α_f(x)$ is strictly smaller than the first dynamical degree $δ_f$ of $f$ is not Zariski dense. We extend the KSC to sAND (= small Arithmetic Non-Density) Conjecture that the locus $Z_f(d)$ of all points of small arithmetic degree is not Zariski dense, and verify this sAND Conjecture for endomorphisms on projective varieties including surfaces, HyperKähler varieties, abelian varieties, Mori dream spaces, simply connected smooth varieties admitting int-amplified endomorphisms, smooth threefolds admitting int-amplified endomorphisms, and some fibre spaces. We show the equivalence of the sAND Conjecture and another conjecture on the periodic subvarieties of small dynamical degree; we also show the close relations between the sAND Conjecture and the Uniform Boundedness Conjecture of Morton and Silverman on endomorphisms of projective spaces and another long standing conjecture on Uniform Boundedness of torsion points in abelian varieties.

Surjective endomorphisms of projective surfaces: the existence of infinitely many dense orbits

Let $f \colon X \to X$ be a surjective endomorphism of a normal projective surface. When $\operatorname{deg} f \geq 2$, applying an (iteration of) $f$-equivariant minimal model program (EMMP), we determine the geometric structure of $X$. Using this, we extend the second author's result to singular surfaces to the extent that either $X$ has an $f$-invariant non-constant rational function, or $f$ has infinitely many Zariski-dense forward orbits; this result is also extended to Adelic topology (which is finer than Zariski topology).

Zero entropy automorphisms of compact Kähler manifolds and dynamical filtrations

We study zero entropy automorphisms of a compact Kähler manifold $X$. Our goal is to bring to light some new structures of the action on the cohomology of $X$, in terms of the so-called dynamical filtrations on $H^{1,1}(X, {\mathbb R})$. Based on these filtrations, we obtain the first general upper bound on the polynomial growth of the iterations $(g^m)^* \, {\circlearrowleft} \, H^2(X, {\mathbb C})$ where $g$ is a zero entropy automorphism, in terms of ${\rm dim} \, X$ only. We also give an upper bound for the (essential) derived length $\ell_{\rm ess}(G, X)$ for every zero entropy subgroup $G$, again in terms of the dimension of $X$ only. We propose a conjectural upper bound for the essential nilpotency class $c_{\rm ess}(G,X)$ of a zero entropy subgroup $G$. Finally, we construct examples showing that our upper bound of the polynomial growth (as well as the conjectural upper bound of $c_{\rm ess}(G,X)$) are optimal.

Wild automorphisms of projective varieties, the maps which have no invariant proper subsets

Let $X$ be a projective variety and $σ$ a wild automorphism on $X$, i.e., whenever $σ(Z) = Z$ for a non-empty Zariski-closed subset $Z$ of $X$, we have $Z = X$. Then $X$ is conjectured to be an abelian variety with $σ$ of zero entropy (and proved to be so when ${\rm dim} \, X \le 2$) by Z. Reichstein, D. Rogalski and J. J. Zhang in their study of projectively simple rings. This conjecture has been generally open for more than a decade. In this note, we confirm this original conjecture when ${\rm dim} \, X \le 3$ and $X$ is not a Calabi-Yau threefold, and also show that $σ$ is of zero entropy when ${\rm dim} \, X \le 4$ and the Kodaira dimension $κ(X) \ge 0$.
