Non-isomorphic endomorphisms of Fano threefolds

Let $X$ be a smooth Fano threefold. We show that $X$ admits a non-isomorphic surjective endomorphism if and only if $X$ is either a toric variety or a product of $\mathbb{P}^1$ and a del Pezzo surface; in this case, $X$ is a rational variety. We further show that $X$ admits a polarized (or amplified) endomorphism if and only if $X$ is a toric variety.

Potential density of projective varieties having an int-amplified endomorphism

We consider the potential density of rational points on an algebraic variety defined over a number field $K$, i.e., the property that the set of rational points of $X$ becomes Zariski dense after a finite field extension of $K$. For a non-uniruled projective variety with an int-amplified endomorphism, we show that it always satisfies potential density. When a rationally connected variety admits an int-amplified endomorphism, we prove that there exists some rational curve with a Zariski dense forward orbit, assuming the Zariski dense orbit conjecture in lower dimensions. As an application, we prove the potential density for projective varieties with int-amplified endomorphisms in dimension $\leq 3$. We also study the existence of densely many rational points with the maximal arithmetic degree over a sufficiently large number field.

Invariant subvarieties with small dynamical degree

Let $f:X\to X $ be a dominant self-morphism of an algebraic variety over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. We consider the set $Σ_{f^{\infty}}$ of $f$-periodic (irreducible closed) subvarieties of small dynamical degree, the subset $S_{f^{\infty}}$ of maximal elements in $Σ_{f^{\infty}}$, and the subset $S_f$ of $f$-invariant elements in $S_{f^{\infty}}$. When $X$ is projective, we prove the finiteness of the set $P_f$ of $f$-invariant prime divisors with small dynamical degree, and give an optimal upper bound (of cardinality) $$\sharp P_{f^n}\le d_1(f)^n(1+o(1))$$ as $n\to \infty$, where $d_1(f)$ is the first dynamic degree of $f$. When $X$ is an algebraic group (with $f$ being a translation of an isogeny), or a (not necessarily complete) toric variety (with $f$ stabilizing the big torus), we give an optimal upper bound $$\sharp S_{f^n}\le d_1(f)^{n\cdot\dim(X)}(1+o(1))$$ as $n \to \infty$, which slightly generalizes a conjecture of S.-W. Zhang for polarized $f$.

Polarized endomorphisms of normal projective threefolds in arbitrary characteristic

Let $X$ be a projective variety over an algebraically closed field $k$ of arbitrary characteristic $p \ge 0$. A surjective endomorphism $f$ of $X$ is $q$-polarized if $f^\ast H \sim qH$ for some ample Cartier divisor $H$ and integer $q > 1$. Suppose $f$ is separable and $X$ is $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein and normal. We show that the anti-canonical divisor $-K_X$ is numerically equivalent to an effective $\mathbb{Q}$-Cartier divisor, strengthening slightly the conclusion of Boucksom, de Fernex and Favre (Theorem C) and also covering singular varieties over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic. Suppose $f$ is separable and $X$ is normal. We show that the Albanese morphism of $X$ is an algebraic fibre space and $f$ induces polarized endomorphisms on the Albanese and also the Picard variety of $X$, and $K_X$ being pseudo-effective and $\mathbb{Q}$-Cartier means being a torsion $\mathbb{Q}$-divisor. Let $f^{Gal}:\overline{X}\to X$ be the Galois closure of $f$. We show that if $p>5$ and co-prime to $deg\, f^{Gal}$ then one can run the minimal model program (MMP) $f$-equivariantly, after replacing $f$ by a positive power, for a mildly singular threefold $X$ and reach a variety $Y$ with torsion canonical divisor (and also with $Y$ being a quasi-étale quotient of an abelian variety when $\dim(Y)\le 2$). Along the way, we show that a power of $f$ acts as a scalar multiplication on the Neron-Severi group of $X$ (modulo torsion) when $X$ is a smooth and rationally chain connected projective variety of dimension at most three.

Characterizations of Toric Varieties via Polarized Endomorphisms

Let $X$ be a normal projective variety and $f:X\to X$ a non-isomorphic polarized endomorphism. We give two characterizations for $X$ to be a toric variety. First we show that if $X$ is $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial and $G$-almost homogeneous for some linear algebraic group $G$ such that $f$ is $G$-equivariant, then $X$ is a toric variety. Next we give a geometric characterization: if $X$ is of Fano type and smooth in codimension 2 and if there is an $f^{-1}$-invariant reduced divisor $D$ such that $f|_{X\backslash D}$ is quasi-étale and $K_X+D$ is $\mathbb{Q}$-Cartier, then $X$ admits a quasi-étale cover $\widetilde{X}$ such that $\widetilde{X}$ is a toric variety and $f$ lifts to $\widetilde{X}$. In particular, if $X$ is further assumed to be smooth, then $X$ is a toric variety.

Semi-group structure of all endomorphisms of a projective variety admitting a polarized endomorphism

Let $X$ be a projective variety admitting a polarized (or more generally, int-amplified) endomorphism. We show: there are only finitely many contractible extremal rays; and when $X$ is $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial normal, every minimal model program is equivariant relative to the monoid $SEnd(X)$ of all surjective endomorphisms, up to finite index. Further, when $X$ is rationally connected and smooth, we show: there is a finite-index submonoid $G$ of $SEnd(X)$ such that $G$ acts via pullback as diagonal (and hence commutative) matrices on the Neron-Severi group; the full automorphisms group $Aut(X)$ has finitely many connected components; and every amplified endomorphism is int-amplified.

Normal projective varieties admitting polarized or int-amplified endomorphisms

Let $X$ be a normal projective variety admitting a polarized or int-amplified endomorphism $f$. We list up characteristic properties of such an endomorphism and classify such a variety from the aspects of its singularity, anti-canonical divisor and Kodaira dimension. Then we run the equivariant minimal model program with respect to not just the single $f$ but also the monoid $SEnd(X)$ of all surjective endomorphisms of $X$, up to finite-index. Several applications are given. We also give both algebraic and geometric characterizations of toric varieties via polarized endomorphisms.

Building blocks of polarized endomorphisms of normal projective varieties

An endomorphism $f$ of a projective variety X is polarized (resp. quasi-polarized) if $f^*H$ is linearly equivalent to $qH$ for some ample (resp. nef and big) Cartier divisor $H$ and integer $q > 1$. First, we use cone analysis to show that a quasi-polarized endomorphism is always polarized, and the polarized property descends via any equivariant dominant rational map. Next, we show that a suitable maximal rationally connected fibration (MRC) can be made $f$-equivariant using a construction of N. Nakayama, that $f$ descends to a polarized endomorphism of the base Y of this MRC and that this Y is a Q-abelian variety (quasi-étale quotient of an abelian variety). Finally, we show that we can run the minimal model program (MMP) $f$-equivariantly for mildly singular X and reach either a Q-abelian variety or a Fano variety of Picard number one. As a consequence, the building blocks of polarized endomorphisms are those of Q-abelian varieties and those of Fano varieties of Picard number one. Along the way, we show that $f$ always descends to a polarized endomorphism of the Albanese variety Alb(X) of X, and that the pullback of a power of $f$ acts as a scalar multiplication on the Neron-Severi group of X (modulo torsion) when X is smooth and rationally connected. Partial answers about X being of Calabi-Yau type, or Fano type are also given with an extra primitivity assumption on $f$ which seems necessary by an example.

Periodic subvarieties of a projective variety under the action of a maximal rank abelian group of positive entropy

We determine positive-dimensional G-periodic proper subvarieties of an n-dimensional normal projective variety X under the action of an abelian group G of maximal rank n-1 and of positive entropy. The motivation of the paper is to understand the obstruction for X to be G-equivariant birational to the quotient variety of an abelian variety modulo the action of a finite group.

Jordan property for non-linear algebraic groups and projective varieties

A century ago, Camille Jordan proved that the complex general linear group $GL_n(C)$ has the Jordan property: there is a Jordan constant $C_n$ such that every finite subgroup $H \le GL_n(C)$ has an abelian subgroup $H_1$ of index $[H : H_1] \le C_n$. We show that every connected algebraic group $G$ (which is not necessarily linear) has the Jordan property with the Jordan constant depending only on $\dim \, G$, and that the full automorphism group $Aut(X)$ of every projective variety $X$ has the Jordan property

Rationality of homogeneous varieties

Let G be a connected linear algebraic group over an algebraically closed field k, and let H be a connected closed subgroup of G. We prove that the homogeneous variety G/H is a rational variety over k whenever H is solvable, or when dim(G/H) < 11 and characteristic(k) = 0. When H is of maximal rank in G, we also prove that G/H is rational if the maximal semisimple quotient of G is isogenous to a product of almost-simple groups of type A, type C (when characteristic(k) is not 2), or type B_3 or G_2 (when characteristic(k) = 0).

Effectivity of Iitaka fibrations and pluricanonical systems of polarized pairs

For every smooth complex projective variety $W$ of dimension $d$ and nonnegative Kodaira dimension, we show the existence of a universal constant $m$ depending only on $d$ and two natural invariants of the very general fibres of an Iitaka fibration of $W$ such that the pluricanonical system $|mK_W|$ defines an Iitaka fibration. This is a consequence of a more general result on polarized adjoint divisors. In order to prove these results we develop a generalized theory of pairs, singularities, log canonical thresholds, adjunction, etc.

Compact Kähler manifolds admitting large solvable groups of automorphisms

Let G be a group of automorphisms of a compact Kähler manifold X of dimension n and N(G) the subset of null-entropy elements. Suppose G admits no non-abelian free subgroup. Improving the known Tits alternative, we obtain that, up to replace G by a finite-index subgroup, either G/N(G) is a free abelian group of rank < n-1, or G/N(G) is a free abelian group of rank n-1 and X is a complex torus, or G is a free abelian group of rank n-1. If the last case occurs, X is G-equivariant birational to the quotient of an abelian variety provided that X is a projective manifold of dimension n > 2 and is not rationally connected. We also prove and use a generalization of a theorem by Fujiki and Lieberman on the structure of Aut(X).

Compact Kähler manifolds with automorphism groups of maximal rank

For an automorphism group G on an n-dimensional (n > 2) normal projective variety or a compact Kähler manifold X so that G modulo its subgroup N(G) of null entropy elements is an abelian group of maximal rank n-1, we show that N(G) is virtually contained in Aut_0(X), the X is a quotient of a complex torus T and G is mostly descended from the symmetries on the torus T, provided that both X and the pair (X, G) are minimal.

Criteria for the existence of equivariant fibrations on algebraic surfaces and hyperkähler manifolds and equality of automorphisms up to powers - a dynamical viewpoint

Let $X$ be a projective surface or a hyperkähler manifold and $G \le Aut(X)$. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a non-trivial $G$-equivariant fibration on $X$. We also show that two automorphisms $g_i$ of positive entropy and polarized by the same nef divisor are the same up to powers, provided that either $X$ is not an abelian surface or the $g_i$ share at least one common periodic point. The surface case is known among experts, but we treat this case together with the hyperkähler case using the same language of hyperbolic lattice and following Ratcliffe or Oguiso. This arXiv version contains proofs omitted in the print version.

Positivity criteria for log canonical divisors and hyperbolicity

Let X be a complex projective variety and D a reduced divisor on X. Under a natural minimal condition on the singularities of the pair (X, D), which includes the case of smooth X with simple normal crossing D, we ask for geometric criteria guaranteeing various positivity conditions for the log-canonical divisor K_X+D. By adjunction and running the log minimal model program, natural to our setting, we obtain a geometric criterion for K_X+D to be numerically effective as well as a geometric version of the cone theorem, generalizing to the context of log pairs these results of Mori. A criterion for K_X+D to be pseudo-effective with mild hypothesis on D follows. We also obtain, assuming the abundance conjecture and the existence of rational curves on Calabi-Yau manifolds, an optimal geometric sharpening of the Nakai-Moishezon criterion for the ampleness of a divisor of the form K_X+D, a criterion verified under a canonical hyperbolicity assumption on (X,D). Without these conjectures, we verify this ampleness criterion with assumptions on the number of ample and non ample components of D.

n-Dimensional Projective Varieties with the Action of an Abelian Group of Rank n-1

Let X be a normal projective variety of dimension n > 2 admitting the action of the group G := Z^{n-1} such that every non-trivial element of G is of positive entropy. We show: `X is not rationally connected' ==> `X is G-equivariant birational to the quotient of a complex torus' <==> `K_X + D is pseudo-effective for some G-periodic effective fractional divisor D.' See Main Theorem 2.5. To apply, one uses the above and fact: `the Kodaira dimension of X is at least 0' ==> `X is not uniruled' ==> `X is not rationally connected.' We may generalize the result to the case of solvable G as in Remark 2.7.
