Non-radial oscillation modes in hybrid stars: consequences of a mixed phase

We study the possibility of the existence of a deconfined quark matter in the core of neutron star (NS)s and its relation to non-radial oscillation modes in NSs and hybrid star (HS)s. We use relativistic mean field (RMF) models to describe the nuclear matter at low densities and zero temperature. The Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model is used to describe the quark matter at high densities and zero temperature. A Gibbs construct is used to describe the hadron-quark phase transition (HQPT) at large densities. Within the model, as the density increases, a mixed phase (MP) appears at density about $2.5$ times the nuclear matter saturation density $(ρ_0)$ and ends at density about $5 ρ_0$ beyond which the pure quark matter phase appears. It turns out that a stable HS of maximum mass, $M=2.27 M_{\odot}$ with radius $R=14$ km (for NL3 parameterisation of nuclear RMF model), can exist with the quark matter in the core in a MP only. HQPT in the core of maximum mass HS occurs at radial distance, $r_c=0.27R$ where the equilibrium speed of sound shows a discontinuity. Existence of quark matter in the core enhances the non-radial oscillation frequencies in HSs compared to NSs of the same mass. This enhancement is significantly large for the $g$ modes. Such an enhancement of the $g$ modes is also seen for a density dependent Bayesian (DDB) parmeterisation of the nucleonic EOS. The non-radial oscillation frequencies depend on the vector coupling in the NJL model. The values of $g$ and $f$ mode frequencies decrease with increase the vector coupling in quark matter.

Eulerian formulation of the constitutive relation for an electro-magneto-elastic material class

A novel class of electro-magneto-elastic (EME) materials comprise electro-active and magneto-active particles in the polymer matrix that change their elastic behavior with an applied electromagnetic field. The material response for such a material class is usually formulated in terms of Lagrangian strain tensor along with Lagrangian electromagnetic field vectors as pushed forward to the current configuration. This letter article presents a novel formulation of an electro-magneto-elasticity in terms of an Eulerian strain tensor and Eulerian electromagnetic field vectors referring to the current configuration. Such an Eulerian formulation is often favorable from both theoretical and computational standpoints, which avoids the pushed forward operation to get the current configuration. Additionally, an exercise to deduce the constitutive relation for an EME material class available in the existing literature from the newly proposed relation is also illustrated.

Hate Raids on Twitch: Echoes of the Past, New Modalities, and Implications for Platform Governance

In the summer of 2021, users on the livestreaming platform Twitch were targeted by a wave of "hate raids," a form of attack that overwhelms a streamer's chatroom with hateful messages, often through the use of bots and automation. Using a mixed-methods approach, we combine a quantitative measurement of attacks across the platform with interviews of streamers and third-party bot developers. We present evidence that confirms that some hate raids were highly-targeted, hate-driven attacks, but we also observe another mode of hate raid similar to networked harassment and specific forms of subcultural trolling. We show that the streamers who self-identify as LGBTQ+ and/or Black were disproportionately targeted and that hate raid messages were most commonly rooted in anti-Black racism and antisemitism. We also document how these attacks elicited rapid community responses in both bolstering reactive moderation and developing proactive mitigations for future attacks. We conclude by discussing how platforms can better prepare for attacks and protect at-risk communities while considering the division of labor between community moderators, tool-builders, and platforms.

Linear programming word problems formulation using EnsembleCRF NER labeler and T5 text generator with data augmentations

We propose an ensemble approach to predict the labels in linear programming word problems. The entity identification and the meaning representation are two types of tasks to be solved in the NL4Opt competition. We propose the ensembleCRF method to identify the named entities for the first task. We found that single models didn't improve for the given task in our analysis. A set of prediction models predict the entities. The generated results are combined to form a consensus result in the ensembleCRF method. We present an ensemble text generator to produce the representation sentences for the second task. We thought of dividing the problem into multiple small tasks due to the overflow in the output. A single model generates different representations based on the prompt. All the generated text is combined to form an ensemble and produce a mathematical meaning of a linear programming problem.

Effect of confinement on flow around a rotating elliptic cylinder in laminar flow regime

The flow phenomena around a rotating elliptic cylinder in a channel is studied numerically. The value of the confinement parameter βis varied as \frac{1}{k}, where k = 2, 4, 6, and 8 respectively, to demonstrate the vortex-shedding patterns around the cylinder in the downstream wake. The non-dimensional rotation rate αtakes up 0.5, 1, and 2 as its value. Additionally, the Reynolds number (\textit{Re}) based on the cylinder diameter is taken to be 50, 100, and 150 respectively. A parametric study is performed to explain the changes in drag coefficient \textit{(C_{D})}, lift coefficient \textit{(C_{L})}, and moment coefficient \textit{(C_{M})} with variations of β, α, and \textit{Re}. The Fast-Fourier transform (FFT) of the time-periodic lift signals is presented to understand the shedding frequency characteristics, and the \textit{C_{M}} values are analyzed for cases of autorotation. Despite the introduction of significant confinement and cylinder rotation, complete suppression of vortex shedding is not observed for the considered parameter space. Autorotation is observed and becomes prominent with decrease in non-dimensional rotation rate and increase in confinement and Reynolds number.

Decoherence puzzle in measurements of photons originating from electron-positron annihilation

Entanglement of photons originating from the electron-positron annihilation has not been proven experimentally. Though the independent experiments performed so far unanimously confirm that correlation between the linear polarizations of back-to-back photons from the electron-positron annihilation is consistent with the assumption that these photons are entangled in polarization. Yet, unexpectedly, recent experiments differ as regards the correlation of polarization direction of back-to-back photons after the decoherence induced by scattering of one of these photons on the electron in the scattering material. In one of the experiments, the correlation before and after the decoherence of the photon state is the same and in the other experiment the scattering of one photon leads to a significant decrease in this correlation. Here we discuss this puzzle. The decoherent states were ensured by forcing one of the annihilation photons through prior scattering before the Compton kinematics based measurement of the polarization correlation. A comparison between the experimental setups used for the different measurements and the results obtained are briefly discussed, highlighting the parameters that are important for performing such measurements. Finally, the main features of the J-PET detector are presented with the schemes for performing similar measurements so that the results can be used as conclusive remarks for solving this puzzle. Solving the decoherence puzzle will have crucial consequences for basic studies of entanglement, as well as for the proposed application of polarisation of photons in positron emission tomography. In case if the correlation of polarisation of back-to-back photons from the electron-positron annihilation is the same before and after the scattering of these photons, then it will not be useful for the reduction of the scatter fraction in PET diagnostics.

Understanding Longitudinal Behaviors of Toxic Accounts on Reddit

Toxic comments are the top form of hate and harassment experienced online. While many studies have investigated the types of toxic comments posted online, the effects that such content has on people, and the impact of potential defenses, no study has captured the long-term behaviors of the accounts that post toxic comments or how toxic comments are operationalized. In this paper, we present a longitudinal measurement study of 929K accounts that post toxic comments on Reddit over an 18~month period. Combined, these accounts posted over 14 million toxic comments that encompass insults, identity attacks, threats of violence, and sexual harassment. We explore the impact that these accounts have on Reddit, the targeting strategies that abusive accounts adopt, and the distinct patterns that distinguish classes of abusive accounts. Our analysis forms the foundation for new time-based and graph-based features that can improve automated detection of toxic behavior online and informs the nuanced interventions needed to address each class of abusive account.

Dict-NMT: Bilingual Dictionary based NMT for Extremely Low Resource Languages

Neural Machine Translation (NMT) models have been effective on large bilingual datasets. However, the existing methods and techniques show that the model's performance is highly dependent on the number of examples in training data. For many languages, having such an amount of corpora is a far-fetched dream. Taking inspiration from monolingual speakers exploring new languages using bilingual dictionaries, we investigate the applicability of bilingual dictionaries for languages with extremely low, or no bilingual corpus. In this paper, we explore methods using bilingual dictionaries with an NMT model to improve translations for extremely low resource languages. We extend this work to multilingual systems, exhibiting zero-shot properties. We present a detailed analysis of the effects of the quality of dictionaries, training dataset size, language family, etc., on the translation quality. Results on multiple low-resource test languages show a clear advantage of our bilingual dictionary-based method over the baselines.

OCR Synthetic Benchmark Dataset for Indic Languages

We present the largest publicly available synthetic OCR benchmark dataset for Indic languages. The collection contains a total of 90k images and their ground truth for 23 Indic languages. OCR model validation in Indic languages require a good amount of diverse data to be processed in order to create a robust and reliable model. Generating such a huge amount of data would be difficult otherwise but with synthetic data, it becomes far easier. It can be of great importance to fields like Computer Vision or Image Processing where once an initial synthetic data is developed, model creation becomes easier. Generating synthetic data comes with the flexibility to adjust its nature and environment as and when required in order to improve the performance of the model. Accuracy for labeled real-time data is sometimes quite expensive while accuracy for synthetic data can be easily achieved with a good score.

No Calm in The Storm: Investigating QAnon Website Relationships

QAnon is a far-right conspiracy theory whose followers largely organize online. In this work, we use web crawls seeded from two of the largest QAnon hotbeds on the Internet, Voat and 8kun, to build a QAnon-centered domain-based hyperlink graph. We use this graph to identify, understand, and learn about the set of websites that spread QAnon content online. Specifically, we curate the largest list of QAnon centered websites to date, from which we document the types of QAnon sites, their hosting providers, as well as their popularity. We further analyze QAnon websites' connection to mainstream news and misinformation online, highlighting the outsized role misinformation websites play in spreading the conspiracy. Finally, we leverage the observed relationship between QAnon and misinformation sites to build a highly accurate random forest classifier that distinguishes between misinformation and authentic news sites. Our results demonstrate new and effective ways to study the growing presence of conspiracy theories and misinformation on the Internet.

On periodic and compactly supported least energy solutions to semilinear elliptic equations with non-Lipschitz nonlinearity

We discuss the existence and non-existence of periodic in one variable and compactly supported in the other variables least energy solutions for equations with non-Lipschitz nonlinearity of the form: $-Δu=λu^p - u^q$ in $\mathbb{R}^{N+1}$, where $ 0< q < p \leq 1$, $λ\in \mathbb{R}$. The approach is based on the Nehari manifold method supplemented by a one-sided constraint given through the functional of the suitable Pohozaev identity. The limit value of the parameter $λ$, where the approach is applicable, corresponds to the existence of periodic in one variable and compactly supported in the other variables least energy solutions. This value is found through the extrem values of nonlinear generalized Rayleigh quotients and the so-called curve of the critical exponents of $p,q$. Important properties of the solutions are derived, such as that they are not trivial with respect to the periodic variable and do not coincide with compactly supported solutions on the entire space $\mathbb{R}^{N+1}$.

On centrally extended Jordan derivations and related maps in rings

Let $R$ be a ring and $Z(R)$ be the center of $R.$ The aim of this paper is to define the notions of centrally extended Jordan derivations and centrally extended Jordan $\ast$-derivations, and to prove some results involving these mappings. Precisely, we prove that if a $2$-torsion free noncommutative prime ring $R$ admits a centrally extended Jordan derivation (resp. centrally extended Jordan $\ast$-derivation) $δ:R\to R$ such that \[ [δ(x),x]\in Z(R)~~(resp.~~[δ(x),x^{\ast}]\in Z(R))\text{~for~all~}x\in R, \] where $'\ast'$ is an involution on $R,$ then $R$ is an order in a central simple algebra of dimension at most 4 over its center.

Global regularity results for non-homogeneous growth fractional problems

This article concerns with the global Hölder regularity of weak solutions to a class of problems involving the fractional $(p,q)$-Laplacian, denoted by $(-Δ)^{s_1}_{p}+(-Δ)^{s_2}_{q}$, for $1<p,q<\infty$ and $s_1,s_2\in (0,1)$. We use a suitable Caccioppoli inequality and local boundedness result in order to prove the weak Harnack type inequality. Consequently, by employing a suitable iteration process, we establish the interior Hölder regularity for local weak solutions, which need not be assumed bounded. The global Hölder regularity result we prove expands and improves the regularity results of Giacomoni, Kumar and Sreenadh (arXiv: 2102.06080) to the subquadratic case (that is, $q<2$) and more general right hand side, which requires a different and new approach. Moreover, we establish a nonlocal Harnack type inequality for weak solutions, which is of independent interest.

Lambda Learner: Fast Incremental Learning on Data Streams

One of the most well-established applications of machine learning is in deciding what content to show website visitors. When observation data comes from high-velocity, user-generated data streams, machine learning methods perform a balancing act between model complexity, training time, and computational costs. Furthermore, when model freshness is critical, the training of models becomes time-constrained. Parallelized batch offline training, although horizontally scalable, is often not time-considerate or cost-effective. In this paper, we propose Lambda Learner, a new framework for training models by incremental updates in response to mini-batches from data streams. We show that the resulting model of our framework closely estimates a periodically updated model trained on offline data and outperforms it when model updates are time-sensitive. We provide theoretical proof that the incremental learning updates improve the loss-function over a stale batch model. We present a large-scale deployment on the sponsored content platform for a large social network, serving hundreds of millions of users across different channels (e.g., desktop, mobile). We address challenges and complexities from both algorithms and infrastructure perspectives, and illustrate the system details for computation, storage, and streaming production of training data.

Designing Toxic Content Classification for a Diversity of Perspectives

In this work, we demonstrate how existing classifiers for identifying toxic comments online fail to generalize to the diverse concerns of Internet users. We survey 17,280 participants to understand how user expectations for what constitutes toxic content differ across demographics, beliefs, and personal experiences. We find that groups historically at-risk of harassment - such as people who identify as LGBTQ+ or young adults - are more likely to to flag a random comment drawn from Reddit, Twitter, or 4chan as toxic, as are people who have personally experienced harassment in the past. Based on our findings, we show how current one-size-fits-all toxicity classification algorithms, like the Perspective API from Jigsaw, can improve in accuracy by 86% on average through personalized model tuning. Ultimately, we highlight current pitfalls and new design directions that can improve the equity and efficacy of toxic content classifiers for all users.

Towards the Biconjugate of Bivariate Piecewise Quadratic Functions

Computing the closed convex envelope or biconjugate is the core operation that bridges the domain of nonconvex with convex analysis. We focus here on computing the conjugate of a bivariate piecewise quadratic function defined over a polytope. First, we compute the convex envelope of each piece, which is characterized by a polyhedral subdivision such that over each member of the subdivision, it has a rational form (square of a linear function over a linear function). Then we compute the conjugate of all such rational functions. It is observed that the conjugate has a parabolic subdivision such that over each member of its subdivision, it has a fractional form (linear function over square root of a linear function). This computation of the conjugate is performed with a worst-case linear time complexity algorithm. Our results are an important step toward computing the conjugate of a piecewise quadratic function, and further in obtaining explicit formulas for the convex envelope of piecewise rational functions.

Electromagnetic Crimping on Threaded Surface: FEM Modelling, Validation and Effects of Pitch and Discharge Energy on Deformation in an Empirical Relation

Electromagnetic crimping is a high-velocity joining method to join highly conductive workpieces where a pulsed magnetic field is applied without any working medium or mechanical contact to deform the workpiece. This work explores tube-to-tube joining of Copper outer tube and Stainless steel threaded inner tube using electromagnetic crimping. A non-coupled simulation model is developed for the finite element analysis. ANSYS Maxwell package is used to obtain the magnetic field intensity, which is later converted to pressure using an analytical equation, and this pressure is applied to the two-tube working domain in ANSYS Explicit Dynamics. Numerical simulations are done for different combinations of discharge energies and pitches of the thread to analyse deformation, stress and strain. The converged finite element results are validated using experimental data. The amount of deformation is found to be proportional to discharge energy and the pitch of the thread used. An empirical relation is developed for the deformation as a function of discharge energy and pitch. The relation is able to predict the deformation for other discharge energies, which is later verified with ANSYS simulations.

Sobolev and Hölder regularity results for some singular nonhomogeneous quasilinear problems

This article deals with the study of the following singular quasilinear equation: \begin{equation*} (P) \left\{ \ -Δ_{p}u -Δ_{q}u = f(x) u^{-δ},\; u>0 \text{ in }\; \Om; \; u=0 \text{ on } \pa\Om, \right. \end{equation*} where $\Om$ is a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^N$ with $C^2$ boundary $\pa\Om$, $1< q< p<\infty$, $\de>0$ and $f\in L^\infty_{loc}(\Om)$ is a non-negative function which behaves like $\textnormal{dist}(x,\pa\Om)^{-\ba},$ $\ba\ge 0$ near the boundary of $\Om$. We prove the existence of a weak solution in $W^{1,p}_{loc}(\Om)$ and its behaviour near the boundary for $\ba<p$. Consequently, we obtain optimal Sobolev regularity of weak solutions. By establishing the comparison principle, we prove the uniqueness of weak solution for the case $\ba<2-\frac{1}{p}$. Subsequently, for the case $\ba\ge p$, we prove the non-existence result. Moreover, we prove Hölder regularity of the gradient of weak solution to a more general class of quasilinear equations involving singular nonlinearity as well as lower order terms (see \eqref{Prb}). This result is completely new and of independent interest. In addition to this, we prove Hölder regularity of minimal weak solutions of $(P)$ for the case $β+δ\geq 1$ that has not been fully answered in former contributions even for $p$-Laplace operators.
