Spall Failure of Coral Skeleton beneath Gas-Laden Canopies: An Idealized Blast-Fishing Model

Improvised explosives used for fishing on shallow Indonesian reefs shatter coral skeleton, yet the damage they cause has been described largely through empirical radii and ecological surveys. We formulate an idealized model of how free gas held within a coral canopy modifies the shock loading that such a charge delivers to skeletal plates. The canopy is treated as a relaxed bubbly mixture whose shock impedance follows from the conservation of mass and momentum, and the reef is represented as a layered column of water, canopy, skeletal plate, and canopy struck at normal incidence. Three closed-form results emerge. Above a crossover pressure set by the void fraction and the stiffness of seawater, the canopy becomes nearly transparent to the shock. The impulse transmitted through any lossless layered stack is independent of the canopy, so gas redistributes the pulse in time without changing its total push. A plate carries tension after reflection from its lower face only when the canopy impedance falls below a threshold fixed by the plate thickness and the pulse duration, which defines a critical thickness. For a one-kilogram charge directly overhead, a gas-rich canopy more than triples the standoff at which a twelve-centimeter plate spalls while shortening the standoff at which it is crushed. A prescribed daily cycle of photosynthetic gas makes the same charge markedly more damaging at noon than at night. Bubble dynamics show that the canopy does not reach equilibrium within the pulse, so the results are best read as upper bounds.

Conservation Constraints and Distributed Advective Memory in a Reduced Model of Atlantic Overturning Hysteresis

Interbasin exchange through the Indo-Pacific gateway supplies salt to the Atlantic and is widely invoked as a control on the stability of the Atlantic overturning circulation. We ask whether that control can act on the equilibrium structure of a conceptual thermohaline model. A closed five-box model with an exact salt invariant is constructed, comprising North Atlantic, upper-limb, Indian, Pacific, and deep reservoirs, with the return flow split between a warm route through the Indian reservoir and a cold route, together with an Indonesian Throughflow branch and an Agulhas retroflection. Adding the steady-state budgets of the gateway reservoirs shows that every internal exchange cancels, so the salt they export to the Atlantic is fixed by the net Atlantic freshwater export alone. This holds independently of the warm-route fraction, the throughflow, the retroflection, and how the export is apportioned among gateway reservoirs; across a parameter sweep the largest departure is of order ten to the minus eleven. The gateway therefore enters as a purely additive forcing and cannot renormalize the salt-advection feedback. Replacing the discrete transit lag by a gamma memory kernel leaves the equilibria unchanged but yields a closed-form threshold for oscillatory instability depending only on kernel shape. Broad memory is strongly stabilizing, and a discrete lag is the least stable member of the family. Because the instantaneous feedback vanishes at the fold, oscillatory instability always precedes the saddle-node, over an interval widening more than tenfold as memory sharpens. Gateways therefore appear to act on transient rather than equilibrium dynamics

An Exactly Solvable Ekman Layer with a Fractional-Order Stress Closure

The classical theory of the wind-driven surface layer of a rotating ocean closes the momentum balance with a local flux-gradient law, in which the turbulent stress at a given depth is proportional to the shear at that depth. It predicts a surface current deflected forty-five degrees from the wind, which exceeds most direct measurements. This study asks what follows when locality is relaxed. Beginning from the exact integral relation between turbulent stress and mean shear, and requiring the memory kernel to carry no preferred vertical scale, we obtain a power-law kernel and therefore a stress law of fractional order. The resulting equation cannot be posed on the velocity, because the fractional derivative of a bounded profile vanishes at the surface, so the wind stress cannot be applied, while the alternative definition of the derivative leaves the surface current unbounded. Posed on the stress instead, the problem is solvable in closed form in Mittag-Leffler functions at every order between zero and one. The surface deflection then depends on the closure order alone and is smaller than forty-five degrees throughout, whereas the depth-integrated transport stays exactly normal to the wind, because that constraint follows from the momentum balance and not from the closure. The far field decays as a power law rather than exponentially, and its amplitude vanishes in the local limit, so that limit is singular. Under a suddenly applied stress the surface transient decays algebraically. Three independent algorithms agree closely, and no observational or model data are used.

Measuring Primitive Accumulation: An Information-Theoretic Approach to Capitalist Enclosure in PIK2, Indonesia

Large-scale land enclosure for speculative mega-development constitutes a non-equilibrium spatial process whose velocity, topology, and irreversibility remain poorly quantified. We study the Pantai Indah Kapuk 2 (PIK2) coastal mega-development north of Jakarta, Indonesia, using eight years (2017--2024) of Sentinel-2 land-use/land-cover (LULC) data at 10-meter resolution. The landscape is projected onto a Marxian probability simplex partitioning terrestrial pixels into Commons, Agrarian, and Capital fractions. Fisher-Rao (FR) geodesic distances on this simplex identify a transformation pulse of $0.405$~rad/yr during 2019--2020, coinciding with major construction activity. Absorbing Markov chain analysis yields expected absorption times into the built environment of $46.0$~years for cropland and $38.1$~years for tree cover, with a pooled built-area self-retention rate of $96.4\%$. Percolation analysis reveals that a giant connected component containing $89$--$95\%$ of all built pixels persists at occupation probabilities $p \in [0.096, 0.162]$, far below the random percolation threshold $p_c \approx 0.593$, indicating planned rather than stochastic spatial growth. The box-counting fractal dimension of the urban boundary increases from $d_f = 1.316$ to $1.397$, consistent with increasingly irregular frontier expansion. These results suggest that information-geometric and statistical-mechanical tools can characterize the kinematic and topological signatures of capitalist spatial accumulation with quantitative precision.

anyakrakusuma: A Python Library for Entropic Schrödinger Bridges on Idealized Geometries

We present anyakrakusuma, an open-source Python library that solves the discrete static Schrödinger bridge problem, the entropically regularized counterpart of optimal transport, through a log-domain Sinkhorn--Knopp iteration and reconstructs the entropic interpolation between two empirical point clouds. The solver is paired with a diagnostic pipeline that characterizes the optimal coupling and the intermediate distributions through information-theoretic and geometric measures. We exercise the library on four idealized planar cases spanning a circle-to-circle dilation, a spiral-to-mixture fragmentation, a rigid reorientation of two moons, and a Lissajous-to-trefoil deformation. The log-domain formulation is necessary rather than merely convenient at the parameters studied, where the cost-to-regularization ratio reaches four hundred and the Gibbs kernel underflows double precision across most of its range; the iteration nonetheless attains a marginal residual of $10^{-9}$ and unit marginal fidelity in every case. Residual histories decay geometrically over approximately eight decades at per-iteration contraction factors between $0.966$ and $0.976$, which are local rates near the fixed point that lie many orders of magnitude below the worst-case Hilbert-metric bound. The covariance analysis recovers an imposed ninety-degree reorientation to within $0.07^\circ$, roughly forty times smaller than its uncertainty, across a masked interval of near-isotropy on which the principal axis is unobservable. The diagnostics are reported with explicit attention to the regimes in which each is well defined, including the differential entropy, which is meaningful only on the open interpolation interval. The presented cases are constructed rather than measured; quantitative application to empirical point clouds requires further study.

Decreasing groundwater quality at Cisadane riverbanks: groundwater-surface water approach

The decreasing of groundwater quality has been the major issue in Tangerang area. One of the key process is the interaction between groundwater and Cisadane river water, which flows over volcanic deposits of Bojongmanik Fm, Genteng Fm, Tuf Banten, and Alluvial Fan. The objective of this study is to unravel such interactions based on the potentiometric mapping in the riverbank. We had 60 stop sites along the riverbank for groundwater and river water level observations, and chemical measurements (TDS, EC, temp, and pH). Three river water gauge were also analyzed to see the fluctuations. We identified three types of hydrodynamic relationships with fairly low flow gradients: effluent flow at Segmen I (Kranggan - Batuceper) with 0.2-0.25 gradient, perched flow at Segmen II (Batuceper-Kalibaru) with gradient 0.2-0.25, and influent flow at Segmen III (Kalibaru-Tanjungburung) with gradient 0.15-0.20. Such low flow gradient is controlled by the moderate to low morphological slope in the area. The gaining and losing stream model were also supported by the river water fluctuation data. TDS and EC readings increased more than 40$\%$ from upstream to downstream. At some points the both measurements were two times higher than the permissible limits, along with the drops of pH values at those areas. This study shows the very close interaction between Cisadane river water and groundwater in the riverbank. Therefore the authorities need to be managed the areas with a very strict regulations related to the small and large scale industries located near by the river.
