Baryons in dense QCD

QCD predicts matter at high density should exhibit color superconductivity. We review briefly several pertinent properties of color superconductivity and then discuss how baryons are realized in color superconductors. Especially, we explain an attempt to describe the color-flavor locked quark matter in terms of bosonic degrees of freedom, where the gaped quarks and Fermi sea are realized as Skyrmions, called superqualitons, and Q-matter, respectively.

Dynamics of Baryons from String Theory and Vector Dominance

We consider a holographic model of QCD from string theory, a la Sakai and Sugimoto, and study baryons. In this model, mesons are collectively realized as a five-dimensional \$U(N_F)=U(1)\times SU(N_F)$ Yang-Mills field and baryons are classically identified as $SU(N_F)$ solitons with a unit Pontryagin number and $N_c$ electric charges. The soliton is shown to be very small in the large 't Hooft coupling limit, allowing us to introduce an effective field ${\cal B}$. Its coupling to the mesons are dictated by the soliton structure, and consists of a direct magnetic coupling to the $SU(N_F)$ field strength as well as a minimal coupling to the $U(N_F)$ gauge field. Upon the dimensional reduction, this effective action reproduces all interaction terms between nucleons and an infinite tower of mesons in a manner consistent with the large $N_c$ expansion. We further find that all electromagnetic interactions, as inferred from the same effective action via a holographic prescription, are mediated by an infinite tower of vector mesons, rendering the baryon electromagnetic form factors completely vector-dominated as well. We estimate nucleon-meson couplings and also the anomalous magnetic moments, which compare well with nature.

Holographic Monopole Catalysis of Baryon Decay

We study how monopole catalysis of baryon decay is realized in holographic QCD. Physics of monopole catalysis becomes much simpler in holographic description as it occurs due to the violation of the Bianchi identity for the 5D gauge symmetry when magnetic monopole is present. In holographic QCD we find a unified picture of the baryon number violation under magnetic monopole or electroweak sphaleron, giving a new mechanism of baryon number violation. We also embed our set-up in the string theory model by Sakai and Sugimoto.

Nucleon Form Factors and Hidden Symmetry in Holographic QCD

The vector dominance of the electromagnetic form factors both for mesons and baryons arises naturally in holographic QCD, where both the number of colors and the 't Hooft coupling are taken to be very large, offering a bona-fide derivation of the notion of vector dominance. The crucial ingredient for this is the infinite tower of vector mesons in the approximations made which share features that are characteristic of the quenched approximation in lattice QCD. We approximate the infinite sum by contributions from the lowest four vector mesons of the tower which turn out to saturate the charge and magnetic moment sum rules within a few percent and compute them totally free of unknown parameters for momentum transfers Q^2 less than 1GeV^2. We identify certain observables that can be reliably computed within the approximations and others that are not, and discuss how the improvement of the latter can enable one to bring holographic QCD closer to QCD proper.

The Electric Dipole Moment of the Nucleons in Holographic QCD

We introduce the strong CP-violation in the framework of AdS/QCD model and calculate the electric dipole moments of nucleons as well as the CP-violating pion-nucleon coupling. Our holographic estimate of the electric dipole moments gives for the neutron d_n=1.08 X 10^{-16} theta (e cm), which is comparable with previous estimates. We also predict that the electric dipole moment of the proton should be precisely the minus of the neutron electric dipole moment, thus leading to a new sum rule on the electric dipole moments of baryons.

Effective theory of color superconductivity

We briefly review an effective theory of QCD at high baryon density, describing the relevant modes near the Fermi surface. The high density effective theory has properties of reparametrization invariance and gauge invariance, maintained in a subtle way. It also has a positive measure, allowing lattice simulations at high baryon density. We then apply it to gapless superconductors and discuss recent proposals to resolve the magnetic instability of gapless superconductivity.

Chiral Dynamics of Baryons from String Theory

We study baryons in an AdS/CFT model of QCD by Sakai and Sugimoto, realized as small instantons with fundamental string hairs. We introduce an effective field theory of the baryons in the five-dimensional setting, and show that the instanton interpretation implies a particular magnetic coupling. Dimensional reduction to four dimensions reproduces the usual chiral effective action, and in particular we estimate the axial coupling $g_A$ between baryons and pions and the magnetic dipole moments, both of which are proportional to $N_c$. We extrapolate to finite $N_c$ and discuss subleading corrections.

Baryons in AdS/QCD

We construct a holographic model for baryons in the context of AdS/QCD and study the spin-1/2 nucleon spectra and its couplings to mesons, taking fully account of the effects from the chiral symmetry breaking. A pair of 5D spinors is introduced to represent both left and right chiralities. Our model contains two adjustable parameters, the infrared cutoff and the Yukawa coupling of bulk spinors to bulk scalars, corresponding to the order parameter of chiral symmetry. Taking the lowest-lying nucleon mass as an input, we calculate the mass spectrum of excited nucleons and the nucleon couplings to pions. The excited nucleons show a parity-doubling pattern with smaller pion-nucleon couplings.

Holographic Estimate of Oblique Corrections for Technicolor

We study the oblique corrections to the electroweak interaction in the holographic model of technicolor theories. The oblique S parameter is expressed in terms of a solution to the equations of motion for the AdS bulk gauge fields. By analyzing the solution, we establish a rigorous proof that the S parameter is positive and is reduced by walking. We also present the precise numerical values for the S parameter of various technicolor models by solving the equations numerically.

RG analysis and Magnetic instability in gapless superconductors

We study the magnetic instability of gapless superconductors. The instability arises due to the infrared divergence associated with the gapless modes of the superconductor. When the Fermi-surface mismatch between pairing fermions is close to the gap, the gapless modes have a quadratic energy dispersion relation at low energy and open a secondary gap at the Fermi surface, which is only power-suppressed by the coupling. On the other hand, for a large mismatch, we find the gapless superconductor does not open a secondary gap, but instead makes transition to a new phase by forming the condensate of supercurrents. We calculate the condensate of supercurrents by minimizing the effective potential. In the new phase, the Meissner mass is positive for the magnetic fields orthogonal to the direction of the condensate but zero in the parallel direction.

Topcolor breaking through boundary conditions

The nontrivial boundary conditions (BC's) for the Topcolor breaking are investigated in the context of the TeV-scale extra dimension scenario. In the gauge symmetry breaking mechanism via the BC's we do not need to incorporate a dynamical mechanism for the Topcolor breaking into the model. Moreover, the Topcolor breaking can be realized without introducing explicitly a (composite) scalar field. We present a six dimensional model where the top and bottom quarks in the bulk have the Topcolor charge while the other quarks in the bulk do not. We also put the electroweak gauge interaction in the six dimensional bulk. The bottom quark condensation is naturally suppressed owing to the power-like running of the bulk U(1)_Y interaction, so that only the top condensation is expected to take place. We explore such a possibility based on the ladder Schwinger-Dyson equation and show the cutoff to make the model viable.

The Roper and Radiative Decay of Pentaquarks

Identifying the Roper N(1440) and N(1710) as the pentaquark octet and anti-decuplet, respectively, we analyze their main decay modes in the diquark picture. The ratio of the partial decay widths is largely consistent with the nearly ideal mixing of the Jaffe-Wilczek diquark model, which then allows to predict the width of the radiative decay of N(1440), $Γ_{10}(N\to pγ)=1/4 Γ_{12}(N\to nγ)=0.25-0.31$ MeV. We then show that the three-body radiative decay of the pentaquark anti-decuplet is quite enhanced due to its mixing with the pentaquark octet. We find for the $J^P={1/2}^+$ pentaquark anti-decuplet $Γ(Θ^+\to K^+ n γ)=0.034 \sim 0.041$ MeV. The diquark picture of the pentaquark predicts $Γ(Θ^+\to K^+ n γ) =4 Γ(Θ^+\to K^0 p γ)$. Finally we show that the difference in the Theta+ mass in the K0 p and K+ n decay channels may be accounted for by the missing photons in the radiative decay.

Opening the Window for Technicolor

Recently a new class of technicolor models are proposed, using technifermions of symmetric second-rank tensor. In the models, one can make reasonable estimates of physical quantities like the Higgs mass and the size of oblique corrections, using a correspondence to super Yang-Mills theory in the Corrigan-Ramond limit. The models predict a surprisingly light Higgs of mass, $m_H=150\sim 500 {\rm GeV}$ and have naturally small $S$ parameter.

Lightsheets, Branes and the Covariant Entropy Bound

We investigate the geometry of lightsheets comprised of null geodesics near a brane. Null geodesics which begin parallel to a brane a distance d away are typically gravitationally bound to the brane, so that the maximum distance from the geodesic to the brane never exceeds d. The geometry of resulting lightsheets is similar to that of the brane if one coarse grains over distances of order d. We discuss the implications for the covariant entropy bound applied to brane worlds.

Light Scalar Decay in Diquark Chiral Effective Theory

We calculate the decay rate of light scalar mesons, using a diquark chiral effective theory, recently proposed to describe exotic hadrons. In the effective theory the light scalar mesons are postulated to be bound states of diquark and anti-diquark. We find our results are in good agreement with experimental data. The axial couplings of diquarks with pions and kaons are found to be quite small and the perturbation is reliable. It shows that the diquark picture captures the correct physics of light scalar mesons.

A Diquark Chiral Effective Theory and Exotic Baryons

A chiral effective theory of quarks and diquarks is formulated and applied to exotic tetraquarks and pentaquarks. The effective theory is similar to the chiral quark effective theory with the addition of diquark degrees of freedom and couplings to quarks. Chiral symmetry through generalized Goldberger-Treiman relations, fixes the mass splitting between the even and odd parity diquarks to be about 600 MeV. We provide an estimate of the parameters of the effective theory from both the random instanton model and known data on the low lying scalar nonet. We assess the static properties of the exotic baryons, such as their masses, magnetic moments and decay widths. We show that the small decay widths of the newly reported exotics are largely due to a large tunnelling suppression of a quark between a pair of diquarks. We find $Γ(Θ^+\to K^+n)\simeq 2.5\sim7.0 MeV$ and $Γ(Ξ^{--}\toΞ^- π^-)\simeq 1.7\sim4.8 MeV$.

Holography, Entropy and Extra Dimensions

We show that higher dimensional models (brane worlds) in which the scale of quantum gravity $M_*$ is much smaller than the apparent scale $M_P \sim 10^{19}$ GeV are in conflict with bounds arising from holography and black hole entropy. The thermodynamic entropy of astrophysical black holes and sub-horizon volumes during big bang nucleosynthesis exceed the relevant bounds unless $M_* > 10^{(4-6)}$ TeV, so a hierarchy relative to the weak scale is unavoidable. We discuss the implications for extra dimensions as well as holography.

Brane World Confronts Holography

Holography principle imposes a stringent constraint on the scale of quantum gravity $M_*$ in brane-world scenarios, where all matter is confined on the brane.
