Triaxial magnetic anisotropy in the two-dimensional ferromagnetic semiconductor CrSBr

Two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnets have recently drawn extensive attention, and here we study the electronic structure and magnetic properties of the bulk and monolayer of CrSBr, using first-principles calculations and Monte Carlo simulations. Our results show that bulk CrSBr is a magnetic semiconductor and has the easy magnetization b-axis, hard c-axis, and intermediate a-axis. Thus, the experimental triaxial magnetic anisotropy (MA) is well reproduced here, and it is identified to be the joint effects of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and magnetic dipole-dipole interaction. We find that bulk CrSBr has a strong ferromagnetic (FM) intralayer coupling but a marginal interlayer one. We also study CrSBr monolayer in detail and find that the intralayer FM exchange persists and the shape anisotropy has a more pronounced contribution to the MA. Using the parameters of the FM exchange and the triaxial MA, our Monte Carlo simulations show that CrSBr monolayer has Curie temperature Tc = 175 K. Moreover, we find that a uniaxial tensile (compressive) strain along the a (b) axis would further increase the Tc.

GTN-ED: Event Detection Using Graph Transformer Networks

Recent works show that the graph structure of sentences, generated from dependency parsers, has potential for improving event detection. However, they often only leverage the edges (dependencies) between words, and discard the dependency labels (e.g., nominal-subject), treating the underlying graph edges as homogeneous. In this work, we propose a novel framework for incorporating both dependencies and their labels using a recently proposed technique called Graph Transformer Networks (GTN). We integrate GTNs to leverage dependency relations on two existing homogeneous-graph-based models, and demonstrate an improvement in the F1 score on the ACE dataset.

XFORMAL: A Benchmark for Multilingual Formality Style Transfer

We take the first step towards multilingual style transfer by creating and releasing XFORMAL, a benchmark of multiple formal reformulations of informal text in Brazilian Portuguese, French, and Italian. Results on XFORMAL suggest that state-of-the-art style transfer approaches perform close to simple baselines, indicating that style transfer is even more challenging when moving multilingual.

The ApposCorpus: A new multilingual, multi-domain dataset for factual appositive generation

News articles, image captions, product reviews and many other texts mention people and organizations whose name recognition could vary for different audiences. In such cases, background information about the named entities could be provided in the form of an appositive noun phrase, either written by a human or generated automatically. We expand on the previous work in appositive generation with a new, more realistic, end-to-end definition of the task, instantiated by a dataset that spans four languages (English, Spanish, German and Polish), two entity types (person and organization) and two domains (Wikipedia and News). We carry out an extensive analysis of the data and the task, pointing to the various modeling challenges it poses. The results we obtain with standard language generation methods show that the task is indeed non-trivial, and leaves plenty of room for improvement.

Charge order textures induced by non-linear lattice coupling in a half-doped manganite

The self-organization of strongly interacting electrons into superlattice structures underlies the properties of many quantum materials. How these electrons arrange within the superlattice dictates what symmetries are broken and what ground states are stabilized. Here we show that cryogenic scanning transmission electron microscopy enables direct mapping of local symmetries and order at the intra-unit-cell level in the model charge-ordered system Nd$_{1/2}$Sr$_{1/2}$MnO$_{3}$. In addition to imaging the prototypical site-centered charge order, we discover the nanoscale coexistence of an exotic intermediate state which mixes site and bond order and breaks inversion symmetry. We further show that nonlinear coupling of distinct lattice modes controls the selection between competing ground states. The results demonstrate the importance of lattice coupling for understanding and manipulating the character of electronic self-organization and highlight a novel method for probing local order in a broad range of strongly correlated systems.

Giant strain gradient elasticity in SrTiO3 membranes: bending versus stretching

Young's modulus determines the mechanical loads required to elastically stretch a material, and also, the loads required to bend it, given that bending stretches one surface while compressing the opposite one. Flexoelectric materials have the additional property of becoming electrically polarized when bent. While numerous studies have characterized this flexoelectric coupling, its impact on the mechanical response, due to the energy cost of polarization upon bending, is largely unexplored. This intriguing contribution of strain gradient elasticity is expected to become visible at small length scales where strain gradients are geometrically enhanced, especially in high permittivity insulators. Here we present nano-mechanical measurements of freely suspended SrTiO3 membrane drumheads. We observe a striking non-monotonic thickness dependence of Young's modulus upon small deflections. Furthermore, the modulus inferred from a predominantly bending deformation is three times larger than that of a predominantly stretching deformation for membranes thinner than 20 nm. In this regime we extract a giant strain gradient elastic coupling of ~2.2e-6 N, which could be used in new operational regimes of nano-electro-mechanics.

Strain-Induced Room-Temperature Ferroelectricity in SrTiO$_3$ Membranes

Advances in complex oxide heteroepitaxy have highlighted the enormous potential of utilizing strain engineering via lattice mismatch to control ferroelectricity in thin-film heterostructures. This approach, however, lacks the ability to produce large and continuously variable strain states, thus limiting the potential for designing and tuning the desired properties of ferroelectric films. Here, we observe and explore dynamic strain-induced ferroelectricity in SrTiO$_3$ by laminating freestanding oxide films onto a stretchable polymer substrate. Using a combination of scanning probe microscopy, optical second harmonic generation measurements, and atomistic modeling, we demonstrate robust room-temperature ferroelectricity in SrTiO$_3$ with 2.0% uniaxial tensile strain, corroborated by the notable features of 180° ferroelectric domains and an extrapolated transition temperature of 400 K. Our work reveals the enormous potential of employing oxide membranes to create and enhance ferroelectricity in environmentally benign lead-free oxides, which hold great promise for applications ranging from non-volatile memories and microwave electronics.

Cross-media Structured Common Space for Multimedia Event Extraction

We introduce a new task, MultiMedia Event Extraction (M2E2), which aims to extract events and their arguments from multimedia documents. We develop the first benchmark and collect a dataset of 245 multimedia news articles with extensively annotated events and arguments. We propose a novel method, Weakly Aligned Structured Embedding (WASE), that encodes structured representations of semantic information from textual and visual data into a common embedding space. The structures are aligned across modalities by employing a weakly supervised training strategy, which enables exploiting available resources without explicit cross-media annotation. Compared to uni-modal state-of-the-art methods, our approach achieves 4.0% and 9.8% absolute F-score gains on text event argument role labeling and visual event extraction. Compared to state-of-the-art multimedia unstructured representations, we achieve 8.3% and 5.0% absolute F-score gains on multimedia event extraction and argument role labeling, respectively. By utilizing images, we extract 21.4% more event mentions than traditional text-only methods.

Entity-aware Image Caption Generation

Current image captioning approaches generate descriptions which lack specific information, such as named entities that are involved in the images. In this paper we propose a new task which aims to generate informative image captions, given images and hashtags as input. We propose a simple but effective approach to tackle this problem. We first train a convolutional neural networks - long short term memory networks (CNN-LSTM) model to generate a template caption based on the input image. Then we use a knowledge graph based collective inference algorithm to fill in the template with specific named entities retrieved via the hashtags. Experiments on a new benchmark dataset collected from Flickr show that our model generates news-style image descriptions with much richer information. Our model outperforms unimodal baselines significantly with various evaluation metrics.

Dual-Gate Modulation of Carrier Density and Disorder in an Oxide Two-Dimensional Electron System

Carrier density and disorder are two crucial parameters that control the properties of correlated two-dimensional electron systems. In order to disentangle their individual contributions to quantum phenomena, independent tuning of these two parameters is required. Here, by utilizing a hybrid liquid/solid electric dual-gate geometry acting on the conducting LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterointerface, we obtain an additional degree of freedom to strongly modify the electron confinement profile and thus the strength of interfacial scattering, independent from the carrier density. A dual-gate controlled nonlinear Hall effect is a direct manifestation of this profile, which can be quantitatively understood by a Poisson-Schrodinger subband model. In particular, the large nonlinear dielectric response of SrTiO3 enables a very wide range of tunable density and disorder, far beyond that for conventional semiconductors. Our study provides a broad framework for understanding various reported phenomena at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface.

The density and disorder tuned superconductor-metal transition in two dimensions

Quantum ground states which arise at atomically controlled oxide interfaces provide an opportunity to address key questions in condensed matter physics, including the nature of two-dimensional (2D) metallic behaviour often observed adjacent to superconductivity. At the superconducting LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface, a metallic ground state emerges upon the collapse of superconductivity with field-effect gating. Strikingly, such metallicity is accompanied with a pseudogap. Here, we utilize independent control of carrier density and disorder of the interfacial superconductor using dual electrostatic gates, which enables the comprehensive examination of the electronic phase diagram approaching zero temperature. We find that the pseudogap corresponds to precursor pairing, and the onset of long-range phase coherence forms a 2D superconducting dome as a function of the dual gate voltages. The gate-tuned superconductor-metal transitions are driven by macroscopic phase fluctuations of Josephson coupled superconducting puddles.

A study of Schröder's method for the matrix $p$th root using power series expansions

When $A$ is a matrix with all eigenvalues in the disk $|z-1|<1$, the principal $p$th root of $A$ can be computed by Schröder's method, among many other methods. In this paper we present a further study of Schröder's method for the matrix $p$th root, through an examination of power series expansions of some sequences of scalar functions. Specifically, we obtain a new and informative error estimate for the matrix sequence generated by the Schröder's method, a monotonic convergence result when $A$ is a nonsingular $M$-matrix, and a structure preserving result when $A$ is a nonsingular $M$-matrix or a real nonsingular $H$-matrix with positive diagonal entries.
