An Optimized, Easy-to-use, Open-source GPU Solver for Large-scale Inverse Homogenization Problems

We propose a high-performance GPU solver for inverse homogenization problems to design high-resolution 3D microstructures. Central to our solver is a favorable combination of data structures and algorithms, making full use of the parallel computation power of today's GPUs through a software-level design space exploration. This solver is demonstrated to optimize homogenized stiffness tensors, such as bulk modulus, shear modulus, and Poisson's ratio, under the constraint of bounded material volume. Practical high-resolution examples with 512^3=134.2 million finite elements run in less than 40 seconds per iteration with a peak GPU memory of 9 GB on an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080Ti GPU. Besides, our GPU implementation is equipped with an easy-to-use framework with less than 20 lines of code to support various objective functions defined by the homogenized stiffness tensors. Our open-source high-performance implementation is publicly accessible at https://github.com/lavenklau/homo3d.

Complete One-loop Renormalization-group Equations in the Seesaw Effective Field Theories

In this paper, we derive the complete set of one-loop renormalization-group equations (RGEs) for the operators up to dimension-six (dim-6) in the seesaw effective field theories (SEFTs). Two kinds of contributions to those RGEs are identified, one from double insertions of the dimension-five (dim-5) Weinberg operator and the other from single insertions of the tree-level dim-6 operators in the SEFTs. A number of new results are presented. First, as the dim-5 Weinberg operator is unique in the standard model effective field theory (SMEFT), its contributions to the RGEs for the SEFTs are equally applicable to the SMEFT. We find the full contributions from the Weinberg operator to one-loop RGEs in the SMEFT, correcting the results existing in previous works, and confirm that those from dim-6 operators are consistent with the results in the literature. Second, in the type-I SEFT, we give the explicit expressions of the RGEs of all the physical parameters involved in the charged- and neutral-current interactions of leptons. Third, the RGEs are numerically solved to illustrate the running behaviors of the non-unitary parameters, mixing angles and CP-violating phases in the non-unitary leptonic flavor mixing matrix. Together with the one-loop matching results of the dim-5 and dim-6 operators and their Wilson coefficients, the present work has established a self-consistent framework up to dim-6 to investigate low-energy phenomena of three types of seesaw models at the one-loop level.

Complete One-loop Structure of the Type-(I+II) Seesaw Effective Field Theory

Besides the three canonical seesaw mechanisms, the hybrid scenario, i.e., the so-called type-(I+II) seesaw mechanism containing both the right-handed neutrinos $N^{}_{\rm R}$ and the triplet Higgs $Φ$ is also an appealing extension of the Standard Model (SM) to account for tiny neutrino masses. Recently, the seesaw effective field theories (SEFTs) of the three canonical seesaw mechanisms have already been completely constructed up to one-loop level. In this work, we carry out the one-loop matching of the type-(I+II) seesaw mechanism onto the corresponding type-(I+II) SEFT, which is by no means the trivial combination of the type-I and type-II SEFTs and contains additional contributions even though the right-handed neutrinos and the triplet Higgs have no direct interactions. Employing the Feynman diagrammatic approach, we calculate all those additional contributions from the entangled effects of $N^{}_{\rm R}$ and $Φ$, and finally achieve the complete one-loop structure of the type-(I+II) SEFT. In the type-(I+II) SEFT, the number and content of dim-6 operators are exactly the same as those in the type-II SEFT, but the Wilson coefficients of the unique dim-5 and nine dim-6 operators as well as the quartic coupling constant of the SM Higgs gain some additional contributions, which are absent in the type-I and type-II SEFTs.

Further Experimental Evidence of the Dead Matter Has Memory Conjecture in Capacitive Devices

This study provides new sets of experimental results supporting Westerlund's conjecture that Dead Matter Has Memory. Memory effects in the dynamic response of electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) that integrate its prior history of stimulation and state have been experimentally observed and reported in a few recent studies. The different excitation signals used to quantify such effects in these studies aimed at charging a device to the same voltage value and the exact same accumulated charge level but in different manners. Having reached the same unique voltage-charge point, it was observed that different yet repeatable discharge patterns occur, proving the existence of memory. The aim of this work is to provide further experimental evidence of the inherent memory effect in EDLCs in response to time-varying stationary input excitations with different statistical properties. In particular, different sets of charging voltage waveforms composed of fixed dc values with superimposed uniformly-distributed random fluctuations of different amplitudes were created and used to charge the same EDLC device to a unique voltage-charge point. The duration of these signals was the same but with different values of variance around the mean value. We observed different time-charge responses depending on the extent of the noise level in these charging waveforms. This is interpreted and discussed in the context of inherent memory using fractional-order voltage-charge equations of non-ideal capacitors.

Single photon emitters with polarization and orbital angular momentum locking in monolayer semiconductors

Excitons in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide are endowed with intrinsic valley-orbit coupling between their center-of-mass motion and valley pseudospin. When trapped in a confinement potential, e.g., generated by strain field, we find that intralayer excitons are valley and orbital angular momentum (OAM) entangled. By tuning trap profile and external magnetic field, one can engineer the exciton states at ground state, and realize a series of valley-OAM entangled states. We further show that the OAM of excitons can be transferred to emitted photons, and these novel exciton states can naturally serve as polarization-OAM locked single photon emitters, which under certain circumstance become polarization-OAM entangled, highly tunable by strain trap and magnetic field. Our proposal demonstrates a novel scheme to generate polarization-OAM locked/entangled photons at nanoscale with high degree of integrability and tunability, pointing to exciting opportunities for quantum information applications.

ClusterLog: Clustering Logs for Effective Log-based Anomaly Detection

With the increasing prevalence of scalable file systems in the context of High Performance Computing (HPC), the importance of accurate anomaly detection on runtime logs is increasing. But as it currently stands, many state-of-the-art methods for log-based anomaly detection, such as DeepLog, have encountered numerous challenges when applied to logs from many parallel file systems (PFSes), often due to their irregularity and ambiguity in time-based log sequences. To circumvent these problems, this study proposes ClusterLog, a log pre-processing method that clusters the temporal sequence of log keys based on their semantic similarity. By grouping semantically and sentimentally similar logs, this approach aims to represent log sequences with the smallest amount of unique log keys, intending to improve the ability of a downstream sequence-based model to effectively learn the log patterns. The preliminary results of ClusterLog indicate not only its effectiveness in reducing the granularity of log sequences without the loss of important sequence information but also its generalizability to different file systems' logs.

Status of the singlino-dominated dark matter in general Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model

With the rapid progress of dark matter direct detection experiments, the attractiveness of the popular bino-dominated dark matter in economical supersymmetric theories is fading. As an alternative, the singlino-dominated dark matter in general Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (NMSSM) is paying due attention. This scenario has the following distinct characteristics: free from the tadpole problem and the domain-wall problem of the NMSSM with a $Z_3$-symmetry, predicting more stable vacuum states than the $Z_3$-NMSSM, capable of forming an economical secluded dark matter sector to yield the dark matter experimental results naturally, and readily weaken the restrictions from the LHC search for SUSY. Consequently, it can explain the muon g-2 anomaly in broad parameter space that agrees with various experimental results while simultaneously breaking the electroweak symmetry naturally. In this study, we show in detail how the scenario coincides with the experiments, such as the SUSY search at the LHC, the dark matter search by the LZ experiment, and the improved measurement of the muon g-2. We provide a simple and clear picture of the physics inherent in the general NMSSM.

Causal Inference on Win Ratio for Observational Data with Dependent Subjects

Composite endpoints are commonly used with an anticipation that clinically relevant endpoints as a whole would yield meaningful treatment benefits. The win ratio is a rank-based statistic to summarize composite endpoints, allowing prioritizing the important components of the composite endpoints. Recent development in statistical inference for the win ratio statistic has been focusing on independent subjects without any potential confounding. When analyzing composite endpoints using observational data, one of the important challenges is confounding at baseline. Additionally, hierarchical observational data structures are commonly seen in practice, especially in multi-center studies with patients nesting within hospitals. Such hierarchical structure can introduce potential dependency or cluster effects among observations in the analysis. To address these two issues when using the win ratio statistic, we propose a weighted stratified causal win ratio estimator with calibrated weights. The calibrated weights create balanced patient-level covariates and cluster effect distributions between comparison groups. We conducted extensive simulation studies and showed promising performance of the proposed estimator in terms of bias, variance estimation, type I error and power analysis, regardless of the allocation of treatment assignments at baseline and intra-cluster correlations within clusters. Lastly, the proposed estimator was applied to an observational study among children with traumatic brain injury.

One-loop Matching for the Seesaw Model

In this talk, we present the results of the complete one-loop matching of the seesaw model onto its low-energy effective theory by integrating out three right-handed neutrinos at the one-loop level. We find that there are 31 independent dimension-6 (dim-6) operators (barring flavor structures and Hermitian conjugates) in the Warsaw basis, and the standard-model couplings and the Wilson coefficient of the Weinberg operator acquire threshold corrections at the one-loop level. The complete Lagrangian up to dim-6 at the one-loop level is derived, which is indispensable for consistent explorations of the impact of heavy right-handed neutrinos at low energies.

Modeling Randomly Walking Volatility with Chained Gamma Distributions

Volatility clustering is a common phenomenon in financial time series. Typically, linear models can be used to describe the temporal autocorrelation of the (logarithmic) variance of returns. Considering the difficulty in estimating this model, we construct a Dynamic Bayesian Network, which utilizes the conjugate prior relation of normal-gamma and gamma-gamma, so that its posterior form locally remains unchanged at each node. This makes it possible to find approximate solutions using variational methods quickly. Furthermore, we ensure that the volatility expressed by the model is an independent incremental process after inserting dummy gamma nodes between adjacent time steps. We have found that this model has two advantages: 1) It can be proved that it can express heavier tails than Gaussians, i.e., have positive excess kurtosis, compared to popular linear models. 2) If the variational inference(VI) is used for state estimation, it runs much faster than Monte Carlo(MC) methods since the calculation of the posterior uses only basic arithmetic operations. And its convergence process is deterministic. We tested the model, named Gam-Chain, using recent Crypto, Nasdaq, and Forex records of varying resolutions. The results show that: 1) In the same case of using MC, this model can achieve comparable state estimation results with the regular lognormal chain. 2) In the case of only using VI, this model can obtain accuracy that are slightly worse than MC, but still acceptable in practice; 3) Only using VI, the running time of Gam-Chain, in general case, can be reduced to below 5% of that based on the lognormal chain via MC.

Impact of LHC probes of SUSY and recent measurement of $(g-2)_μ$ on $\mathbb{Z}_3$-NMSSM

It is well known that excessively heavy supersymmetric particles (sparticles) are disfavored to explain the $(g-2)_μ$ anomaly, but some people overlook that moderately light sparticles are also disfavored by the LHC probes of supersymmetry. We take the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model as an example to emphasize the latter point. It is found that, if the theory is required to explain the anomaly at $2σ$ level and meanwhile keep consistent with the LHC results, the following lower bounds may be set: $\tan β\gtrsim 20$, $|M_1| \gtrsim 275~{\rm GeV}$, $M_2 \gtrsim 300~{\rm GeV}$, $μ\gtrsim 460~{\rm GeV}$, $m_{\tildeμ_L} \gtrsim 310~{\rm GeV}$, and $m_{\tildeμ_R} \gtrsim 350~{\rm GeV}$, where $M_1$ and $M_2$ denote gaugino masses, $μ$ represents the Higgsino mass, and $m_{\tildeμ_L}$ and $m_{\tildeμ_R}$ are the mass of Smuons with $L$ and $R$ denoting their dominant chiral component. This observation has significant impacts on dark matter (DM) physics, e.g., the popular $Z$- and Higgs-funnel regions have been excluded, and the Bino-dominated neutralino DM has to co-annihilate with the Wino-dominated electroweakinos (in most cases) and/or Smuons (in few cases) to obtain the correct density. It is also inferred that these conclusions should apply to the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model since the underlying physics for the bounds are the same.

The elastic properties of composites reinforced by a 3D Voronoi fibre network with or without missing fibres

Many composite materials, both natural and fabricated, process a Voronoi like architecture or microstructure. Furthermore, the stochasticity and connectivity of Voronoi tessellation endow the composite materials constructed by this kind of structures a wide range of desired properties including high and tuneable stiffness, high strength and good manufacturability. Thus, Voronoi-based fibre network structures are regarded as promising designs of composite reinforcements, as well as powerful tools in composite mechanics simulations. In this paper, the elastic properties of composites reinforced by a 3D Voronoi fibre network are systemically investigated based on the precise control of the Voronoi cell regularity. The regularity of the reinforcement fibre networks, according to our definition, is found positively related to the Young's moduli of the composites. Interestingly, 20% percent of defects in total reinforcement fibres only causes a less than 6.5% of Young's moduli drop in Voronoi fibre network reinforced composite. The Voronoi fibre network reinforced composites also shows higher Young's moduli than those of conventional composites with discrete reinforcements. The possibility of simulating aerogels by Voronoi fibre network structures are also presented.

Scalable $\rm Al_2O_3-TiO_2$ Conductive Oxide Interfaces as Defect Reservoirs for Resistive Switching Devices

Resistive switching devices herald a transformative technology for memory and computation, offering considerable advantages in performance and energy efficiency. Here we employ a simple and scalable material system of conductive oxide interfaces and leverage their unique properties for a new type of resistive switching device. For the first time, we demonstrate an $\rm Al_2O_3-TiO_2$ based valence-change resistive switching device, where the conductive oxide interface serves both as the back electrode and as a reservoir of defects for switching. The amorphous-polycrystalline $\rm Al_2O_3-TiO_2$ conductive interface is obtained following the technological path of simplifying the fabrication of the two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs), making them more scalable for practical mass integration. We combine physical analysis of the device chemistry and microstructure with comprehensive electrical analysis of its switching behavior and performance. We pinpoint the origin of the resistive switching to the conductive oxide interface, which serves as the bottom electrode and as a reservoir of oxygen vacancies. The latter plays a key role in valence-change resistive switching devices. The new device, based on scalable and complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology-compatible fabrication processes, opens new design spaces towards increased tunability and simplification of the device selection challenge.

PICASSO: Unleashing the Potential of GPU-centric Training for Wide-and-deep Recommender Systems

The development of personalized recommendation has significantly improved the accuracy of information matching and the revenue of e-commerce platforms. Recently, it has 2 trends: 1) recommender systems must be trained timely to cope with ever-growing new products and ever-changing user interests from online marketing and social network; 2) SOTA recommendation models introduce DNN modules to improve prediction accuracy. Traditional CPU-based recommender systems cannot meet these two trends, and GPU- centric training has become a trending approach. However, we observe that GPU devices in training recommender systems are underutilized, and they cannot attain an expected throughput improvement as what it has achieved in CV and NLP areas. This issue can be explained by two characteristics of these recommendation models: First, they contain up to a thousand input feature fields, introducing fragmentary and memory-intensive operations; Second, the multiple constituent feature interaction submodules introduce substantial small-sized compute kernels. To remove this roadblock to the development of recommender systems, we propose a novel framework named PICASSO to accelerate the training of recommendation models on commodity hardware. Specifically, we conduct a systematic analysis to reveal the bottlenecks encountered in training recommendation models. We leverage the model structure and data distribution to unleash the potential of hardware through our packing, interleaving, and caching optimization. Experiments show that PICASSO increases the hardware utilization by an order of magnitude on the basis of SOTA baselines and brings up to 6x throughput improvement for a variety of industrial recommendation models. Using the same hardware budget in production, PICASSO on average shortens the walltime of daily training tasks by 7 hours, significantly reducing the delay of continuous delivery.

AMCAD: Adaptive Mixed-Curvature Representation based Advertisement Retrieval System

Graph embedding based retrieval has become one of the most popular techniques in the information retrieval community and search engine industry. The classical paradigm mainly relies on the flat Euclidean geometry. In recent years, hyperbolic (negative curvature) and spherical (positive curvature) representation methods have shown their superiority to capture hierarchical and cyclic data structures respectively. However, in industrial scenarios such as e-commerce sponsored search platforms, the large-scale heterogeneous query-item-advertisement interaction graphs often have multiple structures coexisting. Existing methods either only consider a single geometry space, or combine several spaces manually, which are incapable and inflexible to model the complexity and heterogeneity in the real scenario. To tackle this challenge, we present a web-scale Adaptive Mixed-Curvature ADvertisement retrieval system (AMCAD) to automatically capture the complex and heterogeneous graph structures in non-Euclidean spaces. Specifically, entities are represented in adaptive mixed-curvature spaces, where the types and curvatures of the subspaces are trained to be optimal combinations. Besides, an attentive edge-wise space projector is designed to model the similarities between heterogeneous nodes according to local graph structures and the relation types. Moreover, to deploy AMCAD in Taobao, one of the largest ecommerce platforms with hundreds of million users, we design an efficient two-layer online retrieval framework for the task of graph based advertisement retrieval. Extensive evaluations on real-world datasets and A/B tests on online traffic are conducted to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed system.

One-loop Matching of the Type-II Seesaw Model onto the Standard Model Effective Field Theory

In this paper, we continue to construct the low-energy effective field theories (EFTs) of the canonical seesaw models, which are natural extensions of the Standard Model (SM) to accommodate tiny but nonzero neutrino masses. Different from three right-handed neutrino singlets in the type-I seesaw model, the Higgs triplet in the type-II seesaw model participates directly in the electroweak gauge interactions, rendering the EFT construction more challenging. By integrating out the heavy Higgs triplet in the functional-integral formalism, we carry out a complete one-loop matching of the type-II seesaw model onto the so-called Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). It turns out that 41 dimension-six operators (barring flavor structures and Hermitian conjugates) in the Warsaw basis of the SMEFT can be obtained, covering all those 31 dimension-six operators in the case of type-I seesaw model. The Wilson coefficients for 41 dimension-six operators are computed up to $\mathcal{O}\left( M^{-2}_Δ\right)$ with $M^{}_Δ$ being the mass scale of the Higgs triplet. Moreover, the branching ratios of rare radiative decays of charged leptons $l^-_α\to l^-_β+ γ$ are calculated in the EFT and compared with that in the full theory in order to demonstrate the practical application and the correctness of our EFT construction.

Impact of recent $(g-2)_μ$ measurement on the light CP-even Higgs scenario in general Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model

The General Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (GNMSSM) is an attractive theory that is free from the tadpole problem and the domain-wall problem of $Z_3$-NMSSM, and can form an economic secluded dark matter (DM) sector to naturally predict the DM experimental results. It also provides mechanisms to easily and significantly weaken the constraints from the LHC search for supersymmetric particles. These characteristics enable the theory to explain the recently measured muon anomalous magnetic moment, $(g-2)_μ$, in a broad parameter space that is consistent with all experimental results and at same time keeps the electroweak symmetry breaking natural. This work focuses on a popular scenario of the GNMSSM in which the next-to-lightest CP-even Higgs boson corresponds to the scalar discovered at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Both analytic formulae and a sophisticated numerical study show that in order to predict the scenario without significant tunings of relevant parameters, the Higgsino mass $μ_{tot} \lesssim 500~{\rm GeV}$ and $\tan β\lesssim 30$ are preferred. This character, if combined with the requirement to account for the $(g-2)_μ$ anomaly, will entail some light sparticles and make the LHC constraints very tight. As a result, this scenario can explain the muon anomalous magnetic moment in very narrow corners of its parameter space.

Complete One-loop Matching of the Type-I Seesaw Model onto the Standard Model Effective Field Theory

In this paper, we accomplish the complete one-loop matching of the type-I seesaw model onto the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT), by integrating out three heavy Majorana neutrinos with the functional approach. It turns out that only 31 dimension-six operators (barring flavor structures and Hermitian conjugates) in the Warsaw basis of the SMEFT can be obtained, and most of them appear at the one-loop level. The Wilson coefficients of these 31 dimension-six operators are computed up to $\mathcal{O}\left( M^{-2}\right)$ with $M$ being the mass scale of heavy Majorana neutrinos. As the effects of heavy Majorana neutrinos are encoded in the Wilson coefficients of these higher-dimensional operators, a complete one-loop matching is useful to explore the low-energy phenomenological consequences of the type-I seesaw model. In addition, the threshold corrections to the couplings in the Standard Model and to the coefficient of the dimension-five operator are also discussed.
