Semionic resonating valence bond states

The nature of the kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet (HAFM) is under ongoing debate. While recent evidence points towards a Z_2 topological spin liquid, the exact nature of the topological phase is still unclear. In this paper, we introduce semionic Resonating Valence Bond (RVB) states, this is, Resonating Valence Bond states which are in the Z_2 ordered double-semion phase, and study them using Projected Entangled Pair States (PEPS). We investigate their physics and study their suitability as an ansatz for the HAFM, as compared to a conventional RVB state which is in the Toric Code Z_2 topological phase. In particular, we find that a suitably optimized "semionic simplex RVB" outperforms the equally optimized conventional "simplex RVB" state, and that the entanglement spectrum (ES) of the semionic RVB behaves very differently from the ES of the conventional RVB, which suggests to use the ES to discriminate the two phases. Finally, we also discuss the possible relevance of space group symmetry breaking in valence bond wavefunctions with double-semion topological order.

RVB superconductors with fermionic projected entangled pair states

We construct a family of simple fermionic projected entangled pair states (fPEPS) on the square lattice with bond dimension $D=3$ which are exactly hole-doped resonating valence bond (RVB) wavefunctions with short-range singlet bonds. Under doping the insulating RVB spin liquid evolves immediately into a superconductor with mixed $d+is$ pairing symmetry whose pair amplitude grows as the square-root of the doping. The relative weight between $s$-wave and $d$-wave components can be controlled by a single variational parameter $c$. We optimize our ansatz w.r.t. $c$ for the frustrated $t-J_1-J_2$ model (including both nearest and next-nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic interactions $J_1$ and $J_2$, respectively) for $J_2\simeq J_1/2$ and obtain an energy very close to the infinite-PEPS state (using full update optimization and same bond dimension). The orbital symmetry of the optimized RVB superconductor has predominant d-wave character, although we argue a residual (complex s-wave) time reversal symmetry breaking component should always be present. Connections of the results to the physics of superconducting cuprates and pnictides are outlined.

Vanishing spin gap in a competing spin-liquid phase in the kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet

We provide strong numerical evidence, using improved variational wave functions, for a ground state with vanishing spin gap in the spin-$1/2$ quantum Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice. Starting from the algebraic $U(1)$ Dirac spin liquid state proposed by Y. Ran $et al.$ [Phys. Rev. Lett. $98$, $117205$ ($2007$)] and iteratively applying a few Lanczos steps, we compute the lowest $S=2$ excitation constructed by exciting spinons close to the Dirac nodes. Our results are compatible with a vanishing spin gap in the thermodynamic limit and in consonance with a power-law decay of long distance spin-spin correlations in real space. The competition with a gapped (topological) spin liquid is discussed.

Field-induced superfluids and Bose liquids in Projected Entangled Pair States

In two-dimensional incompressible quantum spin liquids, a large enough magnetic field generically induces "doping" of polarized S=1 triplons or S=1/2 spinons. We review a number of cases such as spin-3/2 AKLT or spin-1/2 Resonating Valence Bond (RVB) liquids where the Projected Entangled Pair States (PEPS) framework provides very simple and comprehensive pictures. On the bipartite honeycomb lattice, simple PEPS can describe Bose condensed triplons (AKLT) or spinons (RVB) superfluids with transverse staggered (Néel) magnetic order. On the Kagome lattice, doping the RVB state with deconfined spinons or triplons (i.e. spinon bound pairs) yields uncondensed Bose liquids preserving U(1) spin-rotation symmetry. We find that spinon (triplon) doping destroys (preserves) the topological Z_2 symmetry of the underlying RVB state. We also find that spinon doping induces longer range interactions in the entanglement Hamiltonian, suggesting the emergence of (additive) log-corrections to the entanglement entropy.

Topological order in PEPS: Transfer operator and boundary Hamiltonians

We study the structure of topological phases and their boundaries in the Projected Entangled Pair States (PEPS) formalism. We show how topological order in a system can be identified from the structure of the PEPS transfer operator, and subsequently use these findings to analyze the structure of the boundary Hamiltonian, acting on the bond variables, which reflects the entanglement properties of the system. We find that in a topological phase, the boundary Hamiltonian consists of two parts: A universal non-local part which encodes the nature of the topological phase, and a non-universal part which is local and inherits the symmetries of the topological model, which helps to infer the structure of the boundary Hamiltonian and thus possibly of the physical edge modes.

Simplex Z_2 spin liquids on the Kagome lattice with Entangled Pair States: spinon and vison coherence lengths, topological entropy and gapless edge modes

Gapped Z_2 spin liquids have been proposed as candidates for the ground-state of the S=1/2 quantum antiferromagnet on the Kagome lattice. We extend the use of Projected Entangled Pair States to construct (on the cylinder)Resonating Valence Bond (RVB) states including both nearest-neighbor and next-nearest neighbor singlet bonds. Our ansatz -- dubbed "simplex spin liquid" -- allows for an asymmetry between the two types of triangles (of order 2-3% in the energy density after optimization) leading to the breaking of inversion symmetry. We show that the topological Z_2 structure is still preserved and, by considering the presence or the absence of spinon and vison lines along an infinite cylinder, we explicitly construct four orthogonal RVB Minimally Entangled States. The spinon and vison coherence lengths are extracted from a finite size scaling w.r.t the cylinder perimeter of the energy splittings of the four sectors and are found to be of the order of the lattice spacing. The entanglement spectrum of a partitioned (infinite) cylinder is found to be gapless suggesting the occurrence, on a cylinder with {\it real} open boundaries, of gapless edge modes formally similar to Luttinger liquid (non-chiral) spin and charge modes. When inversion symmetry is spontaneously broken, the RVB spin liquid exhibits an extra Ising degeneracy, which might have been observed in recent exact diagonalisation studies.

Gapless spin-liquid phase in the kagome spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet

We study the energy and the static spin structure factor of the ground state of the spin-1/2 quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnetic model on the kagome lattice. By the iterative application of a few Lanczos steps on accurate projected fermionic wave functions and the Green's function Monte Carlo technique, we find that a gapless (algebraic) U(1) Dirac spin liquid is competitive with previously proposed gapped (topological) Z2 spin liquids. By performing a finite-size extrapolation of the ground-state energy, we obtain an energy per site E/J=-0.4365(2), which is equal, within three error bars, to the estimates given by the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG). Our estimate is obtained for a translationally invariant system, and, therefore, does not suffer from boundary effects, like in DMRG. Moreover, on finite toric clusters at the pure variational level, our energies are lower compared to those from DMRG calculations.

Constructing gapless spin liquid state for the spin-1/2 J1-J2 Heisenberg model on a square lattice

We construct a class of projected entangled pair states (PEPS) which is exactly the resonating valence bond (RVB) wavefunctions endowed with both short range and long range valence bonds. With an energetically preferred RVB pattern, the wavefunction is simplified to live in a one parameter variational space. We tune this variational parameter to minimize the energy for the frustrated spin 1/2 J1-J2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the square lattice. Taking a cylindrical geometry, we are able to construct four topological sectors with even or odd number of fluxes penetrating the cylinder and even or odd number of spinons on the boundary. The energy splitting in different topological sectors is exponentially small with the cylinder perimeter. We find a power law decay of the dimer correlation function on a torus, and a lnL correction to the entanglement entropy, indicating a gapless spin liquid phase at the optimum parameter.

Valence-bond crystals in the kagome spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet: a symmetry classification and projected wave function study

In this paper, we do a complete classification of valence-bond crystals (VBCs) on the kagome lattice based on general arguments of symmetry only and thus identify many new VBCs for different unit cell sizes. For the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet, we study the relative energetics of competing gapless spin liquids (SLs) and VBC phases within the class of Gutzwiller-projected fermionic wave functions using variational Monte Carlo techniques, hence implementing exactly the constraint of one fermion per site. By using a state-of-the-art optimization method, we conclusively show that the U(1) Dirac SL is remarkably stable towards dimerizing into all 6-, 12- and 36-site unit cell VBCs. This stability is also preserved on addition of a next-nearest-neighbor super-exchange coupling of both antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic (FM) type. However, we find that a 36-site unit cell VBC is stabilized on addition of a very small next-nearest-neighbor FM super-exchange coupling, i.e. |J2|~0.045, and this VBC is the same in terms of space-group symmetry as that obtained in an effective quantum dimer model study. It breaks reflection symmetry, has a nontrivial flux pattern and is a strong dimerization of the uniform RVB SL.

One-dimensional itinerant interacting non-Abelian anyons

We construct models of interacting itinerant non-Abelian anyons moving along one-dimensional chains. We focus on itinerant Ising (Majorana) and Fibonacci anyons, which are, respectively, related to SU(2)_2 and SU(2)_3 anyons and also, respectively, describe quasiparticles of the Moore-Read and Z_3-Read-Rezayi fractional quantum Hall states. Following the derivation of the electronic large-U effective Hubbard model, we derive effective anyonic t-J models for the low-energy sectors. Solving these models by exact diagonalization, we find a fractionalization of the anyons into charge and (neutral) anyonic degrees of freedom -- a generalization of spin-charge separation of electrons which occurs in Luttinger liquids. A detailed description of the excitation spectrum can be performed by combining spectra for charge and anyonic sectors. The anyonic sector is the one of a squeezed chain of localized interacting anyons, and hence is described by the same conformal field theory (CFT), with central charge c=1/2 for Ising anyons and c=7/10 or c=4/5 for Fibonacci anyons with antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic coupling, respectively. The charge sector is the spectrum of a chain of hardcore bosons subject to phase shifts which coincide with the momenta of the combined anyonic eigenstates, revealing a subtle coupling between charge and anyonic excitations at the microscopic level (which we also find to be present in Luttinger liquids), despite the macroscopic fractionalization. The combined central charge extracted from the entanglement entropy between segments of the chain is shown to be 1+c, where c is the central charge of the underlying CFT of the localized anyon (squeezed) chain.

Resonating valence bond states in the PEPS formalism

We study resonating valence bond (RVB) states in the Projected Entangled Pair States (PEPS) formalism. Based on symmetries in the PEPS description, we establish relations between the toric code state, the orthogonal dimer state, and the SU(2) singlet RVB state on the kagome lattice: We prove the equivalence of toric code and dimer state, and devise an interpolation between the dimer state and the RVB state. This interpolation corresponds to a continuous path in Hamiltonian space, proving that the RVB state is the four-fold degenerate ground state of a local Hamiltonian on the (finite) kagome lattice. We investigate this interpolation using numerical PEPS methods, studying the decay of correlation functions, the change of overlap, and the entanglement spectrum, none of which exhibits signs of a phase transition.

Topological and Entanglement Properties of Resonating Valence Bond wavefunctions

We examine in details the connections between topological and entanglement properties of short-range resonating valence bond (RVB) wave functions using Projected Entangled Pair States (PEPS) on kagome and square lattices on (quasi-)infinite cylinders with generalized boundary conditions (and perimeters with up to 20 lattice spacings). Making use of disconnected topological sectors in the space of dimer lattice coverings, we explicitly derive (orthogonal) "minimally entangled" PEPS RVB states. For the kagome lattice, we obtain, using the quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet as a reference model, the finite size scaling of the energy separations between these states. In particular, we extract two separate (vanishing) energy scales corresponding (i) to insert a vison line between the two ends of the cylinder and (ii) to pull out and freeze a spin at either end. We also investigate the relations between bulk and boundary properties and show that, for a bipartition of the cylinder, the boundary Hamiltonian defined on the edge can be written as a product of a highly non-local projector with an emergent (local) su(2)-invariant one-dimensional (superfluid) t--J Hamiltonian, which arises due to the symmetry properties of the auxiliary spins at the edge. This multiplicative structure, a consequence of the disconnected topological sectors in the space of dimer lattice coverings, is characteristic of the topological nature of the states. For minimally entangled RVB states, it is shown that the entanglement spectrum, which reflects the properties of the edge modes, is a subset (half for kagome RVB) of the spectrum of the local Hamiltonian, providing e.g. a simple argument on the origin of the topological entanglement entropy S0=-ln 2 of Z2 spin liquids. We propose to use these features to probe topological phases in microscopic Hamiltonians and some results are compared to existing DMRG data.

Fractionalization of itinerant anyons in one dimensional chains

We construct models of interacting itinerant non-Abelian anyons moving along one-dimensional chains, focusing in particular on itinerant Ising anyon chains, and derive effective anyonic t-J models for the low energy sectors. Solving these models by exact diagonalization, we find a fractionalization of the anyons into charge and (non-Abelian) anyonic degrees of freedom -- a generalization of spin-charge separation of electrons which occurs in Luttinger liquids. A detailed description of the excitation spectrum by combining spectra for charge and anyonic sectors requires a subtle coupling between charge and anyonic excitations at the microscopic level (which we also find to be present in Luttinger liquids), despite the macroscopic fractionalization.

Competing Valence Bond Crystals in the Kagome Quantum Dimer Model

The singlet dynamics which plays a major role in the physics of the spin-1/2 Quantum Heisenberg Antiferromagnet (QHAF) on the Kagome lattice can be approximately described by projecting onto the nearest-neighbor valence bond (NNVB) singlet subspace. We re-visit here the effective Quantum Dimer Model which originates from the latter NNVB-projected Heisenberg model via a non-perturbative Rokhsar-Kivelson-like scheme. By using Lanczos exact diagonalisation on a 108-site cluster supplemented by a careful symmetry analysis, it is shown that a previously-found 36-site Valence Bond Crystal (VBC) in fact competes with a new type of 12-site "{\it resonating-columnar}" VBC. The exceptionally large degeneracy of the GS multiplets (144 on our 108-site cluster) might reflect the proximity of the Z_2 dimer liquid. Interestingly, these two VBC "emerge" in {\it different topological sectors}. Implications for the interpretation of numerical results on the QHAF are outlined.

Projected wave function study of Z2 spin liquids on the kagome lattice for the spin-1/2 quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet

Motivated by recent density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations [Yan, Huse, and White, Science 332, 1173 (2011)], which claimed that the ground state of the nearest-neighbor spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice geometry is a fully gapped spin liquid with numerical signatures of Z2 gauge structure, and a further theoretical work [Lu, Ran, and Lee, Phys. Rev. B 83, 224413 (2011)], which gave a classification of all Schwinger-fermion mean-field fully symmetric Z2 spin liquids on the kagome lattice, we have thoroughly studied Gutzwiller-projected fermionic wave functions by using quantum variational Monte Carlo techniques, hence implementing exactly the constraint of one fermion per site. In particular, we investigated the energetics of all Z2 candidates (gapped and gapless) that lie in the neighborhood of the energetically competitive U(1) gapless spin liquids. By using a state-of-the-art optimization method, we were able to conclusively show that the U(1) Dirac state is remarkably stable with respect to all Z2 spin liquids in its neighborhood, and in particular for opening a gap toward the so-called Z2[0,π]β state, which was conjectured to describe the ground state obtained by the DMRG method. Finally, we also considered the addition of a small second nearest-neighbor exchange coupling of both antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic type, and obtained similar results, namely, a U(1) Dirac spin-liquid ground state.

Out-of-equilibrium Correlated Systems : Bipartite Entanglement as a Probe of Thermalization

Thermalization play a central role in out-of-equilibrium physics of ultracold atoms or electronic transport phenomena. On the other hand, entanglement concepts have proven to be extremely useful to investigate quantum phases of matter. Here, it is argued that **bipartite** entanglement measures provide key information on out-of-equilibrium states and might therefore offer stringent thermalization criteria. This is illustrated by considering a global quench in an (extended) XXZ spin-1/2 chain across its (zero-temperature) quantum critical point. A non-local **bipartition** of the chain **preserving translation symmetry** is proposed. The time-evolution after the quench of the **reduced** density matrix of the half-system is computed and its associated (time-dependent) entanglement spectrum is analyzed. Generically, the corresponding entanglement entropy quickly reaches a "plateau" after a short transient regime. However, in the case of the integrable XXZ chain, the low-energy entanglement spectrum still reveals strong time-fluctuations. In addition, its infinite-time average shows strong deviations from the spectrum of a Boltzmann thermal density matrix. In contrast, when the integrability of the model is broken (by small next-nearest neighbor couplings), the entanglement spectra of the time-average and thermal density matrices become remarkably similar.

Entanglement spectrum and boundary theories with projected entangled-pair states

In many physical scenarios, close relations between the bulk properties of quantum systems and theories associated to their boundaries have been observed. In this work, we provide an exact duality mapping between the bulk of a quantum spin system and its boundary using Projected Entangled Pair States (PEPS). This duality associates to every region a Hamiltonian on its boundary, in such a way that the entanglement spectrum of the bulk corresponds to the excitation spectrum of the boundary Hamiltonian. We study various specific models, like a deformed AKLT [1], an Ising-type [2], and Kitaev's toric code [3], both in finite ladders and infinite square lattices. In the latter case, some of those models display quantum phase transitions. We find that a gapped bulk phase with local order corresponds to a boundary Hamiltonian with local interactions, whereas critical behavior in the bulk is reflected on a diverging interaction length of the boundary Hamiltonian. Furthermore, topologically ordered states yield non-local Hamiltonians. As our duality also associates a boundary operator to any operator in the bulk, it in fact provides a full holographic framework for the study of quantum many-body systems via their boundary.

Valence-bond crystal in the extended kagome spin-1/2 quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet: A variational Monte Carlo approach

The highly-frustrated spin-1/2 quantum Heisenberg model with both nearest ($J_1$) and next-nearest ($J_2$) neighbor exchange interactions is revisited by using an extended variational space of projected wave functions that are optimized with state-of-the-art methods. Competition between modulated valence-bond crystals (VBCs) proposed in the literature and the Dirac spin liquid (DSL) is investigated. We find that the addition of a {\it small} ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor exchange coupling $|J_2|>0.09 J_1$ leads to stabilization of a 36-site unit cell VBC, although the DSL remains a local minimum of the variational parameter landscape. This implies that the VBC is not trivially connected to the DSL: instead it possesses a non-trivial flux pattern and large dimerization.
