Quantum spin ladders of non-Abelian anyons

Quantum ladder models, consisting of coupled chains, form intriguing systems bridging one and two dimensions and have been well studied in the context of quantum magnets and fermionic systems. Here we consider ladder systems made of more exotic quantum mechanical degrees of freedom, so-called non-Abelian anyons, which can be thought of as certain quantum deformations of ordinary SU(2) spins. Such non-Abelian anyons occur as quasiparticle excitations in topological quantum fluids, including p_x + i p_y superconductors, certain fractional quantum Hall states, and rotating Bose-Einstein condensates. Here we use a combination of exact diagonalization and conformal field theory to determine the phase diagrams of ladders with up to four chains. We discuss how phenomena familiar from ordinary SU(2) spin ladders are generalized in their anyonic counterparts, such as gapless and gapped phases, odd/even effects with the ladder width, and elementary `magnon' excitations. Other features are entirely due to the topological nature of the anyonic degrees of freedom.

Pair Density Waves in coupled doped two-leg Ladders

Motivated by Resonant X-ray scattering experiments in cuprate ladder materials showing charge order modulation of period $λ=3$ and 5 at specific hole densities, we investigate models involving the electronic t-J ladders and bosonic chains coupled via screened Coulomb repulsion. Extensive density matrix renormalization group calculations applied to the ladders/chains supplemented by a self-consistent mean-field treatment of the inter-ladder/chain coupling provide quantitative estimates of the charge order for $λ=3,4$ and 5. As previously proposed, such patterns correspond to the emergence of pair density waves which stem from the strong electronic correlations. We comment on the existence of a $λ=4$ modulation not seen so far in experiment.

Entanglement spectra of quantum Heisenberg ladders

Bipartite entanglement measures are fantastic tools to investigate quantum phases of correlated electrons. Here, I analyze the entanglement spectrum of **gapped** two-leg quantum Heisenberg ladders on a periodic ribbon partitioned into two identical periodic chains. Comparison of various entanglement entropies proposed in the literature is given. The entanglement spectrum is shown to closely reflect the low-energy gapless spectrum of each individual edge, for any sign of the exchange coupling constants. This extends the conjecture initially drawn for Fractional Quantum Hall systems to the field of quantum magnetism, stating a direct correspondence between the low-energy entanglement spectrum of a partitioned system and the true spectrum of the "virtual edges". A mapping of the reduced density matrix to a thermodynamic density matrix is also proposed via the introduction of an effective temperature.

Generalized Hardcore Dimer Models approach to low-energy Heisenberg frustrated antiferromagnets: general properties and application to the kagome antiferromagnet

We propose a general non-perturbative scheme that quantitatively maps the low-energy sector of spin-1/2 frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnets to effective Generalized Quantum Dimer Models. We develop the formal lattice independent frame and establish some important results on (i) the locality of the generated Hamiltonians (ii) how full resummations can be performed in this renormalization scheme. The method is then applied to the much debated kagome antiferromagnet for which a fully resummed effective Hamiltonian - shown to capture the essential properties and provide deep insights on the microscopic model [D. Poilblanc, M. Mambrini and D. Schwandt, arXiv:0912.0724] - is derived.

Two-dimensional quantum liquids from interacting non-Abelian anyons

A set of localized, non-Abelian anyons - such as vortices in a p_x + i p_y superconductor or quasiholes in certain quantum Hall states - gives rise to a macroscopic degeneracy. Such a degeneracy is split in the presence of interactions between the anyons. Here we show that in two spatial dimensions this splitting selects a unique collective state as ground state of the interacting many-body system. This collective state can be a novel gapped quantum liquid nucleated inside the original parent liquid (of which the anyons are excitations). This physics is of relevance for any quantum Hall plateau realizing a non-Abelian quantum Hall state when moving off the center of the plateau.

Effective Quantum Dimer Model for the Kagome Heisenberg Antiferromagnet: Nearby Quantum Critical Point and Hidden Degeneracy

The low-energy singlet dynamics of the Quantum Heisenberg Antiferromagnet on the Kagome lattice is described by a quantitative Quantum Dimer Model. Using advanced numerical tools, the latter is shown to exhibit Valence Bond Crystal order with a large 36-site unit cell and hidden degeneracy between even and odd parities. Evidences are given that this groundstate lies in the vicinity of a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ dimer liquid region separated by a Quantum Critical Point. Implications regarding numerical analysis and experiments are discussed.

Mobile holes in frustrated quantum magnets and itinerant fermions on frustrated geometries

As discussed in several chapters of this volume, frustration leads to unconventional (insulating) ground states. On the other hand, doped holes are known to have profound effects in Mott insulators. Therefore doped frustrated systems offer the prospect of novel phases with some of the most fascinating, challenging and exotic behavior. In addition, at commensurate electron fillings and in the presence of strong (screened) Coulomb repulsion, geometrical frustration can also manifests itself as an extensive degeneracy of the classical ground-state manifold providing profound similarities with the field of quantum frustrated magnetism.

Supersolid phases of a doped valence-bond quantum antiferromagnet: Evidence for a coexisting superconducting order parameter

Motivated by numerical evidence of the valence bond groundstate of the two-dimensional Heisenberg pyrochlore lattice, we argue using a $t$-$J$ model that it evolves under doping into novel phases characterized by superconductivity coexisting with the underlying valence-bond solid order. A fermionic mean-field theory supplemented by exact diagonalization results provide strong arguments in favor of the stability of such supersolid phases. The resemblance with modulated superconducting patterns in high-$T_c$ cuprates as well as possible relevance to frustrated noncuprate superconductors such as spinels and pyrochlores is discussed.

Many-body calculation of the spatial extent of the wave-function of a non-magnetic impurity in a d-wave high-temperature superconductor using the t--J model

Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) by providing images of the effects of individual zinc-impurities in cuprate superconductors with unprecedented atomic-resolution offers a stringent test to models of correlated fermions for high-temperature superconductors. Using a t-J model supplemented by Variational Monte Carlo many-body techniques, the spatial dependence of the hole density and of the valence bond and superconducting pairing amplitudes around the impurity are computed. A cross-shaped four-fold symmetric structure very similar to the observed STM observation is found, giving strong credit to the model.

Unidirectional Charge Instability of the d-wave RVB Superconductor

Starting from a uniform d-wave superconducting phase we study the energy cost due to imposed unidirectional defects with a vanishing pairing amplitude. Both renormalized mean-field theory and variational Monte Carlo calculations within the t-J model yield that the energies of inhomogeneous and uniform phases are very close to each other. This suggests that small perturbations in the microscopic Hamiltonian, might lead to inhomogeneous superconducting phases in real materials as observed in recent scanning tunneling microscopy on Ca_{2-x}Na_xCuO_2Cl_2.

Stability of RVB hole stripes in high-temperature superconductors

Indications of density-wave states in underdoped cuprates, coming from recent STM (scanning tunneling microscopy) and Hall-resistance measurements, have raised new concerns whether stripes could be stabilized in the superconducting phase of cuprate materials, even in the absence of antiferromagnetism. Here, we investigate this issue using state-of-the-art quantum Monte Carlo calculations of a $t-J$ model. In particular we consider the stability of unidirectional hole domains in a modulated superconducting background, by taking into account the effect of tetragonal-lattice distortions, next-nearest neighbor hopping and long-range Coulomb repulsion.

Properties of holons in the Quantum Dimer Model

I introduce a doped two-dimensional quantum dimer model describing a doped Mott insulator and retaining the original Fermi statistics of the electrons. This model shows a rich phase diagram including a d-wave hole-pair unconventional superconductor at small enough doping and a bosonic superfluid at large doping. The hole kinetic energy is shown to favor binding of topological defects to the bare fermionic holons turning them into bosons, in agreement with arguments based on RVB wave-functions. Results are discussed in the context of cuprates superconductors.

Unidirectional d-wave superconducting domains in the two-dimensional t-J model

Motivated by the recently observed pattern of unidirectional domains in high-T_c superconductors [Y. Kohsaka et al., Science 315, 1380 (2007)], we investigate the emergence of spontaneous modulations in the d-wave superconducting resonating valence bond phase using the t-J model at x=1/8 doping. Half-filled charge domains separated by four lattice spacings are found to form along one of the crystal axis leading to modulated superconductivity with out-of-phase d-wave order parameters in neighboring domains. Both renormalized mean-field theory and variational Monte Carlo calculations yield that the energies of modulated and uniform phases are very close to each other.

Exotic Mott phases of the extended t--J model on the checkerboard lattice at commensurate densities

Coulomb repulsion between electrons moving on a frustrated lattice can give rise, at simple commensurate electronic densities, to exotic insulating phases of matter. Such a phenomenon is illustrated using an extended t--J model on a planar pyrochlore lattice for which the work on the quarter-filled case [cond-mat/0702367] is complemented and extended to 1/8- and 3/8-fillings. The location of the metal-insulator transition as a function of the Coulomb repulsion is shown to depend strongly on the sign of the hopping. Quite generally, the metal-insulator transition is characterized by lattice symmetry breaking but the nature of the insulating Mott state is more complex than a simple Charge Density Wave. Indeed, in the limit of large Coulomb repulsion, the physics can be described in the framework of (extended) quantum fully-packed loop or dimer models carrying extra spin degrees of freedom. Various diagonal and off-diagonal plaquette correlation functions are computed and the low-energy spectra are analyzed in details in order to characterize the nature of the insulating phases. We provide evidence that, as for an electronic density of n=1/2 (quarter-filling), the system at $n=1/4$ or $n=3/4$ exhibits also plaquette order by forming a (lattice rotationally-invariant) Resonating-Singlet-Pair Crystal, although with a quadrupling of the lattice unit cell (instead of a doubling for $n=1/2$) and a 4-fold degenerate ground state. Interestingly, qualitative differences with the bosonic analog (e.g. known to exhibit columnar order at n=1/4) emphasize the important role of the spin degrees of freedom in e.g. stabilizing plaquette phases w.r.t. rotational symmetry-breaking phases.

Doped Singlet-Pair Crystal in the Hubbard model on the checkerboard lattice

In the limit of large nearest--neighbor and on--site Coulomb repulsions, the Hubbard model on the planar pyrochlore lattice maps, near quarter-filling, onto a doped quantum fully packed loop model. The phase diagram exhibits at quarter filling a novel quantum state of matter, the Resonating Singlet-Pair Crystal, an insulating phase breaking lattice symmetry. Properties of a few doped holes are investigated. In contrast to the doped quantum antiferromagnet, phase separation is restricted to very small hopping leaving an extended``window'' for superconducting pairing. However the later is more fragile for large hopping than in the case of the antiferromagnet.

Plaquette bond order wave in the quarter-filled extended Hubbard model on the checkerboard lattice

An extended Hubbard model (including nearest-neighbor repulsion and antiferromagnetic spin exchange) is investigated on the frustrated checkerboard lattice, a two-dimensional analog of the pyrochlore lattice. Combining Gutzwiller renormalized mean-field (MF) calculations, exact diagonalization (ED) techniques, and a weak-coupling renormalization group (RG) analysis we provide strong evidence for a crystalline valence bond plaquette phase at quarter-filling. The ground state is twofold degenerate and breaks translation symmetry. The bond energies show a staggering while the charge distribution remains uniform.

Spin-rotationally symmetric domain flux phases in underdoped cuprates

We propose a new form of inhomogeneous phases consisting of out-of-phase staggered flux domains separated by diagonal charged domain walls centered on bonds or on sites. Remarkably, such domain flux phases are spin-rotationally symmetric and exhibit cone-like quasiparticle dispersion as well as incommensurate order of orbital currents. Such features are consistent with the pseudogap behavior and the diagonal stripes observed experimentally in lightly doped cuprates. A renormalized mean field theory shows that such solutions are competitive candidates within the $t$--$J$ model.

Doping quantum dimer models on the square lattice

A family of models is proposed to describe the motion of holes in a fluctuating quantum dimer background on the square lattice. Following Castelnovo et al. [Ann. Phys. (NY) 318, 316 (2005)], a generalized Rokhsar-Kivelson Hamiltonian at **finite doping** which can be mapped on a **doped** interacting classical dimer model is constructed. A simple physical extension of this model is also considered. Using numerical computations and simple considerations based on the above exact mapping, we determine the phase diagram of the model showing a number of quantum phases typical of a doped Mott insulator. The two-hole correlation function generically exhibits short-range or long-range algebraic correlations in the solid (columnar) and liquid (critical) phases of the model, respectively. Evidence for an extended region of a doped VBS phase exhibiting holon pairing but **no** phase separation is given. In contrast, we show that hole deconfinement occurs in the staggered dimer phase.
