How to halve maximal supergravity

We work out the truncation from maximal to half-maximal supergravity in four dimensions. In particular, we determine the explicit constraints on the embedding tensors of both theories. These tensors specify the complete theories, including gauge groups and scalar potentials. Firstly, we find the linear constraint on N=8 theories to allow for a truncation to N=4. Secondly, we determine the additional N=4 quadratic constraints following from N=8. Finally, we comment on a brane interpretation as tadpole conditions for the latter.

Charting the landscape of N=4 flux compactifications

We analyse the vacuum structure of isotropic Z_2 x Z_2 flux compactifications, allowing for a single set of sources. Combining algebraic geometry with supergravity techniques, we are able to classify all vacua for both type IIA and IIB backgrounds with arbitrary gauge and geometric fluxes. Surprisingly, geometric IIA compactifications lead to a unique theory with four different vacua. In this case we also perform the general analysis allowing for sources compatible with minimal supersymmetry. Moreover, some relevant examples of type IIB non-geometric compactifications are studied. The computation of the full N=4 mass spectrum reveals the presence of a number of non-supersymmetric and nevertheless stable AdS_4 vacua. In addition we find a novel dS_4 solution based on a non-semisimple gauging.

Flux Compactifications, Gauge Algebras and De Sitter

The introduction of (non-)geometric fluxes allows for N=1 moduli stabilisation in a De Sitter vacuum. The aim of this letter is to assess to what extent this is true in N=4 compactifications. First we identify the correct gauge algebra in terms of gauge and (non-)geometric fluxes. We then show that this algebra does not lead to any of the known gaugings with De Sitter solutions. In particular, the gaugings that one obtains from flux compactifications involve non-semi-simple algebras, while the known gaugings with De Sitter solutions consist of direct products of (semi-)simple algebras.

De Sitter in Extended Supergravity

We show that known de Sitter solutions in extended gauged supergravity theories are interrelated via a web of supersymmetry-breaking truncations. In particular, all N=8 models reduce to a subset of the N=4 possibilities. Furthermore, a different subset of the N=4 models can be truncated to stable de Sitter vacua in N=2 theories. In addition to relations between the known cases, we also find new (un)stable models.

Twin Supergravities

We study the phenomenon that pairs of supergravities can have identical bosonic field content but different fermionic extensions. Such twin theories are classified and shown to originate as truncations of a common theory with more supersymmetry. Moreover, we discuss the possible gaugings and scalar potentials of twin theories. This allows to pinpoint to which extent these structures are determined by the purely bosonic structure of the underlying Kac-Moody algebras and where supersymmetry comes to plays its role. As an example, we analyze the gaugings of the six-dimensional N=(0,1) and N=(2,1) theories with identical bosonic sector and explicitly work out their scalar potentials. The discrepancy between the potentials finds a natural explanation within maximal supergravity, in which both theories may be embedded.

Gaugings at angles from orientifold reductions

We consider orientifold reductions to N=4 gauged supergravity in four dimensions. A special feature of this theory is that different factors of the gauge group can have relative angles with respect to the electro-magnetic SL(2) symmetry. These are crucial for moduli stabilisation and De Sitter vacua. We show how such gaugings at angles generically arise in orientifold reductions.

The Superconformal Gaugings in Three Dimensions

We show how three-dimensional superconformal theories for any number N <= 8 of supersymmetries can be obtained by taking a conformal limit of the corresponding three-dimensional gauged supergravity models. The superconformal theories are characterized by an embedding tensor that satisfies a linear and quadratic constraint. We analyze these constraints and give the general solutions for all cases. We find new N = 4,5 superconformal theories based on the exceptional Lie superalgebras F(4), G(3) and D(2|1;α). Using the supergravity connection we discuss which massive deformations to expect. As an example we work out the details for the case of N = 6 supersymmetry.

Multiple Membranes from Gauged Supergravity

Starting from gauged N=8 supergravity in three dimensions we construct actions for multiple membranes by taking the limit to global supersymmetry for different choices of the embedding tensor. This provides a general framework that reproduces many recent results on multiple membrane actions as well as generalisations thereof. As examples we discuss conformal (non-conformal) gaugings leading to multiple M2-branes (D2-branes) and massive deformations of these systems.

Extended Symmetries in Supergravity: the Semi-simple Case

The bosonic sector of various supergravity theories reduces to a homogeneous space G/H in three dimensions. The corresponding algebras g are simple for (half-)maximal supergravity, but can be semi-simple for other theories. We extend the existing literature on the Kac-Moody extensions of simple Lie algebras to the semi-simple case. Furthermore, we argue that for N=2 supergravity the simple algebras have to be augmented with an su(2) factor.

Kac-Moody Spectrum of (Half-)Maximal Supergravities

We establish the correspondence between, on one side, the possible gaugings and massive deformations of half-maximal supergravity coupled to vector multiplets and, on the other side, certain generators of the associated very extended Kac-Moody algebras. The difference between generators associated to gaugings and to massive deformations is pointed out. Furthermore, we argue that another set of generators are related to the so-called quadratic constraints of the embedding tensor. Special emphasis is placed on a truncation of the Kac-Moody algebra that is related to the bosonic gauge transformations of supergravity. We give a separate discussion of this truncation when non-zero deformations are present. The new insights are also illustrated in the context of maximal supergravity.

Non-propagating degrees of freedom in supergravity and very extended G_2

Recently a correspondence between non-propagating degrees of freedom in maximal supergravity and the very extended algebra E_11 has been found. We perform a similar analysis for a supergravity theory with eight supercharges and very extended G_2. In particular, in the context of d=5 minimal supergravity, we study whether supersymmetry can be realised on higher-rank tensors with no propagating degrees of freedom. We find that in this case the very extended algebra fails to capture these possibilities.

Supersymmetric heterotic string backgrounds

We present the main features of the solution of the gravitino and dilatino Killing spinor equations derived in hep-th/0510176 and hep-th/0703143 which have led to the classification of geometric types of all type I backgrounds. We then apply these results to the supersymmetric backgrounds of the heterotic string. In particular, we solve the gaugino Killing spinor equation together with the other two Killing spinor equations of the theory. We also use our results to classify all supersymmetry conditions of ten-dimensional gauge theory.

Seven-branes and Supersymmetry

We re-investigate the construction of half-supersymmetric 7-brane solutions of IIB supergravity. Our method is based on the requirement of having globally well-defined Killing spinors and the inclusion of SL(2,Z)-invariant source terms. In addition to the well-known solutions going back to Greene, Shapere, Vafa and Yau we find new supersymmetric configurations, containing objects whose monodromies are not related to the monodromy of a D7-brane by an SL(2,Z) transformation.

M-theory and Gauged Supergravities

We present a pedagogical discussion of the emergence of gauged supergravities from M-theory. First, a review of maximal supergravity and its global symmetries and supersymmetric solutions is given. Next, different procedures of dimensional reduction are explained: reductions over a torus, a group manifold and a coset manifold and reductions with a twist. Emphasis is placed on the consistency of the truncations, the resulting gaugings and the possibility to generate field equations without an action. Using these techniques, we construct a number of gauged maximal supergravities in diverse dimensions with a string or M-theory origin. One class consists of the CSO gaugings, which comprise the analytic continuations and group contractions of SO(n) gaugings. We construct the corresponding half-supersymmetric domain walls and discuss their uplift to D- and M-brane distributions. Furthermore, a number of gauged maximal supergravities are constructed that do not have an action.

The Domain Walls of Gauged Maximal Supergravities and their M-theory Origin

We consider gauged maximal supergravities with CSO(p,q,r) gauge groups and their relation to the branes of string and M-theory. The gauge groups are characterised by n mass parameters, where n is the transverse dimension of the brane. We give the scalar potentials and construct the corresponding domain wall solutions. In addition, we show the higher-dimensional origin of the domain walls in terms of (distributions of) branes. We put particular emphasis on the CSO(p,q,r) gauged supergravities in D=9 and D=8, which are related to the D7-brane and D6-brane, respectively. In these cases, twisted and group manifold reductions are shown to play a crucial role. We also discuss salient features of the corresponding brane distributions.

Transient Quintessence from Group Manifold Reductions or how all roads lead to Rome

We investigate the accelerating phases of cosmologies supported by a metric, scalars and a single exponential scalar potential. The different solutions can be represented by trajectories on a sphere and we find that quintessence happens within the "arctic circle" of the sphere. Furthermore, we obtain multi-exponential potentials from 3D group manifold reductions of gravity, implying that such potentials can be embedded in gauged supergravities with an M-theory origin. We relate the double exponential case to flux compactifications on maximally symmetric spaces and S-branes. In the triple exponential case our analysis suggests the existence of two exotic S(D-3)-branes in D dimensions.

The Bianchi Classification of Maximal D=8 Gauged Supergravities

We perform the generalised dimensional reduction of D=11 supergravity over three-dimensional group manifolds as classified by Bianchi. Thus, we construct eleven different maximal D=8 gauged supergravities, two of which have an additional parameter. One class of group manifolds (class B) leads to supergravities that are defined by a set of equations of motion that cannot be integrated to an action. All 1/2 BPS domain wall solutions are given. We also find a non-supersymmetric domain wall solution where the single transverse direction is time. This solution describes an expanding universe and upon reduction gives the Einstein-de Sitter universe in D=4. The uplifting of the different solutions to M-theory and the isometries of the corresponding group manifold are discussed.

Domain Walls and the Creation of Strings

The phenomenon of creation of strings, occurring when particles pass through a domain wall and related to the Hanany-Witten effect via dualities, is discussed in ten and nine dimensions. We consider both the particle actions in massive backgrounds as well as the 1/4-supersymmetric particle-string-domain wall supergravity solutions and discuss their physical interpretation. In 10D we discuss the D0-F1-D8 system in massive IIA theory while in 9D the SL(2,R)-generalisation is constructed. It consists of (p,q)-particles, (r,s)-strings and the double domain wall solution of the three different 9D gauged supergravities where a subgroup of SL(2,R) is gauged.
