Quantum-Enhanced Atomic Sensor via Spin Nonequilibrium Criticality

The sensitivity of quantum sensors is fundamentally constrained by the standard quantum limit (SQL) arising from intrinsic quantum fluctuations. While non-classical resources like squeezing or entanglement can surpass this limit, their utility is often restricted by the extreme fragility of entangled states and the complexity of their preparation. Quantum criticality offers a compelling alternative by harnessing divergent susceptibility to amplify signals without requiring fragile non-classical resources. However, the practical benefit of this approach has remained controversial due to the potential for the simultaneous amplification of quantum noise. Here, we demonstrate a universal protocol for noiseless critical sensing by engineering a light-driven atomic ensemble near a dynamical critical point. Analogous to a Kapitza pendulum near its inverted orientation, the spin system enters a non-equilibrium regime where the signal susceptibility diverges while the quantum noise periodically recedes to its coherent baseline. We exploit this ``noise ebbing'' to create a built-in noiseless amplifier, demonstrating a 3.3 dB metrological gain over the SQL in an atomic magnetometer. Our implementation exhibits intrinsic robustness against common experimental imperfections such as detection losses, establishing non-equilibrium critical dynamics as a practical and versatile paradigm for surpassing the fundamental limits of quantum sensing.

Step-3 is Large yet Affordable: Model-system Co-design for Cost-effective Decoding

Large language models (LLMs) face low hardware efficiency during decoding, especially for long-context reasoning tasks. This paper introduces Step-3, a 321B-parameter VLM with hardware-aware model-system co-design optimized for minimizing decoding costs. Step-3 innovates in two key dimensions: (1) A novel Multi-Matrix Factorization Attention (MFA) mechanism that significantly reduces both KV cache size and computation while maintaining high attention expressiveness, and (2) Attention-FFN Disaggregation (AFD), a distributed inference system that decouples attention and Feed-Forward Network (FFN) layers into specialized subsystems. This co-design achieves unprecedented cost efficiency: Step-3 significantly reduces theoretical decoding costs compared with models like DeepSeek-V3 and Qwen3 MoE 235B, with the gains widening at longer context. Step-3 achieves low cost while activating 38B parameters per token (more than DeepSeek-V3 and Qwen3 MoE 235B), demonstrating that hardware-aligned attention arithmetic intensity, MoE sparsity, and AFD are critical to cost-effectiveness. We perform a head-to-head comparison with DeepSeek-V3 in its favorable scenarios. Our implementation on Hopper GPUs achieves a decoding throughput of up to 4,039 tokens per second per GPU under 50ms TPOT SLA (4K context, FP8, no MTP). It is higher than DeepSeek-V3's 2,324 in the same setup and sets a new Pareto frontier for LLM decoding.

Frequency Range Boosted Magnetometry Beyond the Spin Coherence Limit via Compressive Sensing

Free induction decay (FID) of spin precession serves as an essential tool for quantum sensing across diverse platforms. While extending spin coherence time remains critical for sensitivity enhancement, the requisite long single-shot acquisitions narrow the resolvable frequency range, establishing a fundamental ``spin coherence limit (SCL)'', according to the Nyquist Sampling Theorem. Besides, conventional spectral analysis for FID measurement suffers from frequency alias, causing signal attenuation and positional errors that compromise the measurement validity. Here, we demonstrate a general frequency-range-extended technique that overcomes SCL by leveraging compressive sensing. By applying this method to the FID magnetometer, we expand the resolvable frequency range significantly from the Nyquist-limited range of 251\,Hz to 3000\,Hz, effectively avoiding frequency alias. Our work paves the way for implementing long-coherence-time spin systems in high-sensitivity, broad-bandwidth, and alias-free magnetic field sensing.

Toward Phonon-Limited Transport in Two-Dimensional Electronics by Oxygen-Free Fabrication

Future electronics require aggressive scaling of channel material thickness while maintaining device performance. Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors are promising candidates, but despite over two decades of research, experimental performance still lags theoretical expectations. Here, we develop an oxygen-free approach to push the electrical transport of 2D field-effect transistors toward the theoretical phonon-limited intrinsic mobility. We achieve record carrier mobilities of 91 (132) cm2V-1s-1 for mono- (bi-) layer MoS2 transistors on SiO2 substrate. Statistics from over 60 devices confirm that oxygen-free fabrication enhances key figures of merit by more than an order of magnitude. While previous studies suggest that 2D transition metal dichalcogenides such as MoS2 and WS2 are stable in air, we show that short-term ambient exposure can degrade their device performance through irreversible oxygen chemisorption. This study emphasizes the criticality of avoiding oxygen exposure, offering guidance for device manufacturing for fundamental research and practical applications of 2D materials.

Bayesian Power Steering: An Effective Approach for Domain Adaptation of Diffusion Models

We propose a Bayesian framework for fine-tuning large diffusion models with a novel network structure called Bayesian Power Steering (BPS). We clarify the meaning behind adaptation from a \textit{large probability space} to a \textit{small probability space} and explore the task of fine-tuning pre-trained models using learnable modules from a Bayesian perspective. BPS extracts task-specific knowledge from a pre-trained model's learned prior distribution. It efficiently leverages large diffusion models, differentially intervening different hidden features with a head-heavy and foot-light configuration. Experiments highlight the superiority of BPS over contemporary methods across a range of tasks even with limited amount of data. Notably, BPS attains an FID score of 10.49 under the sketch condition on the COCO17 dataset.

Electrical control of valley polarized charged biexcitons in monolayer WS$_2$

Excitons are key to the optoelectronic applications of van der Waals semiconductors with the potential for versatile on-demand tuning of properties. Yet, their electrical manipulation is complicated by their inherent charge neutrality and the additional loss channels induced by electrical doping. We demonstrate the dynamic control of valley polarization in charged biexciton (quinton) states of monolayer tungsten disulfide, achieving up to a sixfold increase in the degree of circular polarization under off-resonant excitation. In contrast to the weak direct tuning of excitons typically observed using electrical gating, the quinton photoluminescence remains stable, even with increased scattering from electron doping. By exciting at the exciton resonances, we observed the reproducible non-monotonic switching of the charged state population as the electron doping is varied under gate bias, indicating a coherent interplay between neutral and charged exciton states.

Hybrid quantum systems with artificial atoms in solid state

The development of single-platform qubits, predominant for most of the last few decades, has driven the progress of quantum information technologies but also highlighted the limitations of various platforms. Some inherent issues such as charge/spin noise in materials hinder certain platforms, while increased decoherence upon attempts to scale-up severely impact qubit quality and coupling on others. In addition, a universal solution for coherent information transfer between quantum systems remains lacking. By combining one or more qubit platforms, one could potentially create new hybrid platforms that might alleviate significant issues that current single platform qubits suffer from, and in some cases, even facilitate the conversion of static to flying qubits on the same hybrid platform. While nascent, this is an area of rising importance that could shed new light on robust and scalable qubit development and provide new impetus for research directions. Here, we define the requirements for hybrid systems with artificial atoms in solid state, exemplify them with systems that have been proposed or attempted, and conclude with our outlook for such hybrid quantum systems.

CMOS-compatible photonic integrated circuits on thin-film ScAlN

Scandium aluminum nitride (ScAlN) has recently emerged as an attractive material for integrated photonics due to its favorable nonlinear optical properties and compatibility with CMOS fabrication. Despite the promising and versatile material properties, it is still an outstanding challenge to realize low-loss photonic circuits on thin-film ScAlN-on-insulator wafers. Here, we present a systematic study on the material quality of sputtered thin-film ScAlN produced in a CMOS-compatible 200 mm line, and an optimized fabrication process to yield 400 nm thick, fully etched waveguides. With surface polishing and annealing, we achieve micro-ring resonators with an intrinsic quality factor as high as $1.47\times 10^5$, corresponding to a propagation loss of 2.4 dB/cm. These results serve as a critical step towards developing future large-scale, low-loss photonic integrated circuits based on ScAlN.

Nano-ironing van der Waals Heterostructures Towards Electrically Controlled Quantum Dots

Assembling two-dimensional van der Waals layered materials into heterostructures is an exciting development that sparked the discovery of rich correlated electronic phenomena and offers possibilities for designer device applications. However, resist residue from fabrication processes is a major limitation. Resulting disordered interfaces degrade device performance and mask underlying transport physics. Conventional cleaning processes are inefficient and can cause material and device damage. Here, we show that thermal scanning probe based cleaning can effectively eliminate resist residue to recover pristine material surfaces. Our technique is compatible at both the material- and device-level, and we demonstrate the significant improvement in the electrical performance of 2D WS2 transistors. We also demonstrate the cleaning of van der Waals heterostructures to achieve interfaces with low disorder. This enables the electrical formation and control of quantum dots that can be tuned from macroscopic current flow to the single-electron tunnelling regime. Such material processing advances are crucial for constructing high-quality vdW heterostructures that are important platforms for fundamental studies and building blocks for quantum and nano-electronics applications.

Conditional Stochastic Interpolation for Generative Learning

We propose a conditional stochastic interpolation (CSI) method for learning conditional distributions. CSI is based on estimating probability flow equations or stochastic differential equations that transport a reference distribution to the target conditional distribution. This is achieved by first learning the conditional drift and score functions based on CSI, which are then used to construct a deterministic process governed by an ordinary differential equation or a diffusion process for conditional sampling. In our proposed approach, we incorporate an adaptive diffusion term to address the instability issues arising in the diffusion process. We derive explicit expressions of the conditional drift and score functions in terms of conditional expectations, which naturally lead to an nonparametric regression approach to estimating these functions. Furthermore, we establish nonasymptotic error bounds for learning the target conditional distribution. We illustrate the application of CSI on image generation using a benchmark image dataset.

Hybrid Integration of GaP Photonic Crystal Cavities with Silicon-Vacancy Centers in Diamond by Stamp-Transfer

Optically addressable solid-state defects are emerging as one of the most promising qubit platforms for quantum networks. Maximizing photon-defect interaction by nanophotonic cavity coupling is key to network efficiency. We demonstrate fabrication of gallium phosphide 1-D photonic crystal waveguide cavities on a silicon oxide carrier and subsequent integration with implanted silicon-vacancy (SiV) centers in diamond using a stamp-transfer technique. The stamping process avoids diamond etching and allows fine-tuning of the cavities prior to integration. After transfer to diamond, we measure cavity quality factors ($Q$) of up to 8900 and perform resonant excitation of single SiV centers coupled to these cavities. For a cavity with $Q$ of 4100, we observe a three-fold lifetime reduction on-resonance, corresponding to a maximum potential cooperativity of $C = 2$. These results indicate promise for high photon-defect interaction in a platform which avoids fabrication of the quantum defect host crystal.

Liquid Metal Printed Ultrathin Oxides for Monolayer WS2 Top-Gate Transistors

Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors are promising channel materials for continued downscaling of complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) logic circuits. However, their full potential continues to be limited by a lack of scalable high-k dielectrics that can achieve atomically smooth interfaces, small equivalent oxide thicknesses (EOT), excellent gate control, and low leakage currents. Here, we report liquid metal printed ultrathin and scalable Ga2O3 dielectric for 2D electronics and electro-optical devices. We directly visualize the atomically smooth Ga2O3/WS2 interfaces enabled by the conformal nature of liquid metal printing. We demonstrate atomic layer deposition compatibility with high-k Ga2O3/HfO2 top-gate dielectric stacks on chemical vapour deposition grown monolayer WS2, achieving EOTs of ~1 nm and subthreshold swings down to 84.9 mV/dec. Gate leakage currents are well within requirements for ultra-scaled low-power logic circuits. Our results show that liquid metal printed oxides can bridge a crucial gap in scalable dielectric integration of 2D materials for next-generation nano-electronics.

Optically detected magnetic resonance in neutral silicon vacancy centers in diamond via bound exciton states

Neutral silicon vacancy (SiV0) centers in diamond are promising candidates for quantum networks because of their excellent optical properties and long spin coherence times. However, spin-dependent fluorescence in such defects has been elusive due to poor understanding of the excited state fine structure and limited off-resonant spin polarization. Here we report the realization of optically detected magnetic resonance and coherent control of SiV0 centers at cryogenic temperatures, enabled by efficient optical spin polarization via previously unreported higher-lying excited states. We assign these states as bound exciton states using group theory and density functional theory. These bound exciton states enable new control schemes for SiV0 as well as other emerging defect systems.

Hybrid III-V diamond photonic platform for quantum nodes based on neutral silicon vacancy centers in diamond

Integrating atomic quantum memories based on color centers in diamond with on-chip photonic devices would enable entanglement distribution over long distances. However, efforts towards integration have been challenging because color centers can be highly sensitive to their environment, and their properties degrade in nanofabricated structures. Here, we describe a heterogeneously integrated, on-chip, III-V diamond platform designed for neutral silicon vacancy (SiV0) centers in diamond that circumvents the need for etching the diamond substrate. Through evanescent coupling to SiV0 centers near the surface of diamond, the platform will enable Purcell enhancement of SiV0 emission and efficient frequency conversion to the telecommunication C-band. The proposed structures can be realized with readily available fabrication techniques.

Driving Decision and Control for Autonomous Lane Change based on Deep Reinforcement Learning

We apply Deep Q-network (DQN) with the consideration of safety during the task for deciding whether to conduct the maneuver. Furthermore, we design two similar Deep Q learning frameworks with quadratic approximator for deciding how to select a comfortable gap and just follow the preceding vehicle. Finally, a polynomial lane change trajectory is generated and Pure Pursuit Control is implemented for path tracking. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this framework in simulation, from both the decision-making and control layers. The proposed architecture also has the potential to be extended to other autonomous driving scenarios.

Observation of an environmentally insensitive solid state spin defect in diamond

Engineering coherent systems is a central goal of quantum science. Color centers in diamond are a promising approach, with the potential to combine the coherence of atoms with the scalability of a solid state platform. However, the solid environment can adversely impact coherence. For example, phonon- mediated spin relaxation can induce spin decoherence, and electric field noise can change the optical transition frequency over time. We report a novel color center with insensitivity to both of these sources of environmental decoherence: the neutral charge state of silicon vacancy (SiV0). Through careful material engineering, we achieve over 80% conversion of implanted silicon to SiV0. SiV0 exhibits excellent spin properties, with spin-lattice relaxation times (T1) approaching one minute and coherence times (T2) approaching one second, as well as excellent optical properties, with approximately 90% of its emission into the zero-phonon line and near-transform limited optical linewidths. These combined properties make SiV0 a promising defect for quantum networks.
