From Kadanoff--Baym to Boltzmann equations for massive spin-1/2 fermions

We derive Boltzmann equations for massive spin-1/2 fermions with local and nonlocal collision terms from the Kadanoff--Baym equation in the Schwinger--Keldysh formalism, properly accounting for the spin degrees of freedom. The Boltzmann equations are expressed in terms of matrix-valued spin distribution functions, which are the building blocks for the quasi-classical parts of the Wigner functions. Nonlocal collision terms appear at next-to-leading order in $\hbar$ and are sources for the polarization part of the matrix-valued spin distribution functions. The Boltzmann equations for the matrix-valued spin distribution functions pave the way for simulating spin-transport processes involving spin-vorticity couplings from first principles.

Competition of inhomogeneous chiral phases and two-flavor color superconductivity in the NJL model

We study the phase structure of the two-flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model in the chiral limit, extending a previous study of the competition of an inhomogeneous chiral phase and a two-flavor color-superconducting (2SC) phase [1, 2]. There, an analytic expression for the dispersion relations for quasiparticle excitations in the presence of both a particular inhomogeneous chiral condensate, the so-called chiral density wave (CDW), and a homogeneous 2SC condensate was found. In this work we show how to determine the dispersion relations for arbitrary modulations of the chiral condensate in the presence of a homogeneous 2SC condensate, if the dispersion relations in the absence of color superconductivity are known. In our calculations, we employ two different Ansätze for the inhomogeneous chiral condensate, the CDW as well as the real-kink crystal (RKC). Depending on the value of the diquark coupling we find a region of the phase diagram where the inhomogeneous chiral and the 2SC condensates coexist, confirming results of Refs. [1, 2]. Decreasing the diquark coupling favors the inhomogeneous phase over the coexistence phase. On the other hand, increasing the diquark coupling leads to a larger 2SC phase, while the inhomogeneous chiral and the coexistence phases become smaller. In agreement with previous studies the RKC Ansatz is energetically preferred over the CDW Ansatz. Both Ansätze lead to a qualitatively similar phase diagram, however the coexistence phase is smaller for the RKC Ansatz.

Transport coefficients of two-flavor quark matter from the Kubo formalism

The transport coefficients of quark matter at non-zero chemical potential and temperature are computed within the two-flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. We apply the Kubo formalism to obtain the thermal ($κ$) and electrical ($σ$) conductivities as well as an update of the shear viscosity ($η$) by evaluating the corresponding equilibrium two-point correlation functions to leading order in the $1/N_c$ expansion. The Dirac structure of the self-energies and spectral functions is taken into account as these are evaluated from the meson-exchange Fock diagrams for on-mass-shell quarks. We find that the thermal and electrical conductivities are decreasing functions of temperature and density above the Mott temperature $T_{\rm M}$ of dissolution of mesons into quarks, the main contributions being generated by the temporal and vector components of the spectral functions. The coefficients show a universal dependence on the ratio $T/T_{\rm M}$ for different densities, i.e., the results differ by a chemical-potential dependent constant. We also show that the Wiedemann-Franz law for the ratio $σ/κ$ does not hold. The ratio $η/s $, where $s$ is the entropy density, is of order of unity (or larger) close to the Mott temperature and, as the temperature increases, approaches the AdS/CFT bound $1/4π$. It is also conjectured that the ratio $κT/c_V $, with $c_V$ being the specific heat, is bounded from below by $1/18$.

Fermionic excitations at finite temperature and density

We study fermionic excitations in a hot and dense strongly interacting medium consisting of quarks and (pseudo-)scalar mesons. In particular, we use the two-flavor quark-meson model in combination with the Functional Renormalization Group approach, which allows to take into account the effects from thermal and quantum fluctuations. The resulting fermionic excitation spectrum is investigated by calculating the quark spectral function at finite temperature, quark chemical potential, and spatial momentum. This involves an analytic continuation from imaginary to real energies by extending the previously introduced analytically-continued FRG (aFRG) method to the present case. We identify three different collective excitations in the medium: the ordinary thermal quark, the plasmino mode, and an ultra-soft "phonino" mode. The dispersion relations of these modes are extracted from the quark spectral function. When compared to corresponding results from an FRG-improved one-loop calculation remarkable agreement is found.

Wigner function and kinetic theory for massive spin-1/2 particles

We calculate the Wigner function for massive spin-1/2 particles in an inhomogeneous electromagnetic field to leading order in the Planck constant $\hbar$. Going beyond leading order in $\hbar$ we then derive a generalized Boltzmann equation in which the force exerted by an inhomogeneous electromagnetic field on the particle dipole moment arises naturally. Furthermore, a kinetic equation for this dipole moment is derived. Carefully taking the massless limit we find agreement with previous results. The case of global equilibrium with rotation is also studied. Our framework can be used to study polarization effects induced by vorticity and magnetic field in relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Kinetic theory for massive spin-1/2 particles from the Wigner-function formalism

Finally, we outline the derivation of fluid-dynamical equations from the components of the Wigner function. The conservation of total angular momentum is promoted as an additional fluid-dynamical equation of motion. Our framework can be used to study polarization effects induced by vorticity and magnetic field in relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Role of a four-quark and a glueball state in pion-pion and pion-nucleon scattering

We consider the two-flavor version of the extended linear sigma model (eLSM), which contains (pseudo)scalar and (axial-)vector quark-antiquark mesons, a scalar glueball (predominantly corresponding to $f_{0}(1710)$), as well as the nucleon and its chiral partner. We extend this model by the additional light scalar meson $f_{0}(500)$, predominantly a putative four-quark state. We investigate various interaction terms of the four-quark and glueball states with the other particles, some of which preserve and some of which explicitly break the $U(1)_{\textrm{A}}$ symmetry. We test our model by performing a global fit to masses and decay widths of the scalar resonances and pion-pion scattering lengths. We also discuss the influence of the scalar four-quark state and the glueball on the baryon sector by evaluating pion-nucleon scattering parameters. We find that the inclusion of $f_{0}(500)$ improves the description of pion-pion and pion-nucleon scattering lengths.

Wigner function and pair production in parallel electric and magnetic fields

We derive analytical formulas for the equal-time Wigner function in an electromagnetic field of arbitrary strength. While the magnetic field is assumed to be constant, the electric field is assumed to be space-independent and oriented parallel to the magnetic field. The Wigner function is first decomposed in terms of the so-called Dirac-Heisenberg-Wigner (DHW) functions and then the transverse-momentum dependence is separated using a new set of basis functions which depend on the quantum number $n$ of the Landau levels. Equations for the coefficients are derived and then solved for the case of a constant electric field. The pair-production rate for each Landau level is calculated. In the case of finite temperature and chemical potential, the pair-production rate is suppressed by Pauli's exclusion principle.

Resistive dissipative magnetohydrodynamics from the Boltzmann-Vlasov equation

We derive the equations of motion of relativistic, resistive, second-order dissipative magnetohydrodynamics from the Boltzmann-Vlasov equation using the method of moments. We thus extend our previous work [Phys. Rev. D 98, 076009 (2018)], where we only considered the non-resistive limit, to the case of finite electric conductivity. This requires keeping terms proportional to the electric field $E^μ$ in the equations of motions and leads to new transport coefficients due to the coupling of the electric field to dissipative quantities. We also show that the Navier-Stokes limit of the charge-diffusion current corresponds to Ohm's law, while the coefficients of electrical conductivity and charge diffusion are related by a type of Wiedemann-Franz law.

Dynamically generated magnetic moment in the Wigner-function formalism

We study how the mass and magnetic moment of the quarks are dynamically generated in nonequilibrium quark matter. We derive the equal-time transport and constraint equations for the quark Wigner function in a magnetized quark model and solve them in the semi-classical expansion. The quark mass and magnetic moment are self-consistently coupled to the Wigner function and controlled by the kinetic equations. While the quark mass is dynamically generated at the classical level, the quark magnetic moment is a pure quantum effect, induced by the quark spin interaction with the external magnetic field.

Non-resistive dissipative magnetohydrodynamics from the Boltzmann equation in the 14-moment approximation

We derive the equations of motion of relativistic, non-resistive, second-order dissipative magnetohydrodynamics from the Boltzmann equation using the method of moments. We assume the fluid to be composed of a single type of point-like particles with vanishing dipole moment or spin, so that the fluid has vanishing magnetization and polarization. In a first approximation, we assume the fluid to be non-resistive, which allows to express the electric field in terms of the magnetic field. We derive equations of motion for the irreducible moments of the deviation of the single-particle distribution function from local thermodynamical equilibrium. We analyze the Navier-Stokes limit of these equations, reproducing previous results for the structure of the first-order transport coefficients. Finally, we truncate the system of equations for the irreducible moments using the 14-moment approximation, deriving the equations of motion of relativistic, non-resistive, second-order dissipative magnetohydrodynamics. We also give expressions for the new transport coefficients appearing due to the coupling of the magnetic field to the dissipative quantities.

Low-energy limit of the $O(4)$ quark-meson model from the functional renormalization group approach

We compute the low-energy limit of the $O(4)$-symmetric quark-meson model as an effective field theory for Quantum Chromodynamics within the Functional Renormalization Group (FRG) approach. In particular, we analyze the renormalization group flow of momentum-dependent pion self-interactions beyond the local potential approximation. The numerical results for these couplings obtained from the FRG are confronted with a recent tree-level study. Additionally, their effect on the wave-function renormalization and the curvature masses is investigated.

Relativistic Dissipative Fluid Dynamics from Non-Equilibrium Statistical Operator

We present a new derivation of second-order relativistic dissipative fluid dynamics for quantum systems using Zubarev's formalism for the non-equilibrium statistical operator. In particular, we discuss the shear-stress tensor to second order in gradients and argue that the relaxation terms for the dissipative quantities arise from memory effects contained in the statistical operator. We also identify new transport coefficients which describe the relaxation of dissipative processes to second order and express them in terms of equilibrium correlation functions, thus establishing Kubo-type formulae for the second-order transport coefficients.

Effect of intense magnetic fields on reduced-MHD evolution in $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 200 GeV Au+Au collisions

We investigate the effect of large magnetic fields on the $2+1$ dimensional reduced-magnetohydrodynamical expansion of hot and dense nuclear matter produced in $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 200 GeV Au+Au collisions. For the sake of simplicity, we consider the case where the magnetic field points in the direction perpendicular to the reaction plane. We also consider this field to be external, with energy density parametrized as a two-dimensional Gaussian. The width of the Gaussian along the directions orthogonal to the beam axis varies with the centrality of the collision. The dependence of the magnetic field on proper time ($τ$) for the case of zero electrical conductivity of the QGP is parametrized following [Deng 2012], and for finite electrical conductivity following [Tuchin 2013]. We solve the equations of motion of ideal hydrodynamics for such an external magnetic field. For collisions with non-zero impact parameter we observe considerable changes in the evolution of the momentum eccentricities of the fireball when comparing the case when the magnetic field decays in a conducting QGP medium and when no magnetic field is present. The elliptic-flow coefficient $v_2$ of $π^{-}$ is shown to increase in the presence of an external magnetic field and the increment in $v_2$ is found to depend on the evolution and the initial magnitude of the magnetic field.

Influence of the axial anomaly on the decay $N(1535) \rightarrow Nη$

The decay width of $N(1535)\rightarrow Nη$ is as large as that of $N(1535)\rightarrow Nπ$. This is in evident conflict with simple expectations based on flavor symmetry and phase space. Similarly, the decay width of $Λ(1670) \rightarrow Λ(1116) η$ is larger than predicted by flavor symmetry. In this work, we propose that the axial $U(1)_{A}$ anomaly is responsible for an enhanced coupling of (some) excited baryons to the $η$ meson. We test this idea by including a new, chirally symmetric but $U(1)_{A}$ anomalous, term in an effective hadronic model decribing baryons and their chiral partners in the mirror assignment. This term enhances the decay of the chiral partners into baryons and an $η$ meson, such as $N(1535)\rightarrow Nη$. Moreover, a strong coupling of $N(1535)$ to $N η^\prime $ emerges (this is important for studies of $η^\prime$ production processes). Our approach shows that $N(1535)$ is predominantly the chiral partner of $N(939)$, and $Λ(1670)$ the chiral partner of $Λ(1116)$. Finally, our formalism can be used to couple the pseudoscalar glueball $\tilde{G}$ to baryons. We expect a large cross section for the reaction $\bar{p}p \rightarrow \tilde{G} \rightarrow \bar{p}p(1535)$, which can be experimentally tested in the future PANDA experiment.

Bulk Viscosity of Quark-Gluon Plasma in Strong Magnetic Fields

We investigate the viscosities of the quark-gluon plasma in strong magnetic fields within the leading-log and lowest Landau level (LLL) approximations. We first show that the bulk viscosity in the direction parallel to the magnetic field is the only component that has a contribution from the quarks occupying the LLL. We then compute the bulk viscosity from the Kubo formula and find an intriguing quark-mass dependence as a consequence of a competition between the suppression of the bulk viscosity by conformal symmetry and an enhancement of the mean-free path by chirality conservation, which governs the behavior in the massless limit. The quark contribution to the viscosity along the magnetic field becomes larger than the one in the absence of a magnetic field. We also briefly estimate the other transport coefficients by considering the contribution of gluons. We show that the shear viscosities are suppressed compared to their values in the absence of a magnetic field.

Wigner functions of massive fermions in strong magnetic fields

We compute the covariant Wigner function for spin-1/2 fermions in an arbitrarily strong magnetic field by exactly solving the Dirac equation at non-zero fermion-number and chiral-charge densities. The Landau energy levels as well as a set of orthonormal eigenfunctions are found as solutions of the Dirac equation. With these orthonormal eigenfunctions we construct the fermion field operators and the corresponding Wigner-function operator. The Wigner function is obtained by taking the ensemble average of the Wigner-function operator in global thermodynamical equilibrium, i.e., at constant temperature $T$ and non-zero fermion-number and chiral-charge chemical potentials $μ$ and $μ_5$, respectively. Extracting the vector and axial-vector components of the Wigner function, we reproduce the currents of the chiral magnetic and separation effect in an arbitrarily strong magnetic field.
