Synthesis and crystal growth of novel layered bismuthides ATM2Bi2, (A = K, Rb; TM = Zn, Cd) with significant electron-deficient structure

Layered bismuthides of the family ATM2Bi2 are showing very interesting structural and physical properties. Here, we report crystal growth and characterization of new ternary layered bismuthides: RbCd2Bi2, RbZn2Bi2 and KZn2Bi2. Single crystals were grown by self-flux technique. As grown crystals were characterized by combination of powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction. All novel compounds crystallize in layered ThCr2Si2 structure type with plate-like morphology with weak bonding between layers. Significant structural difference between RbCd2Bi2 and AZn2Bi2 (A=K, Rb) was found.

Strongly enhanced Berry dipole at topological phase transitions in BiTeI

Transitions between topologically distinct electronic states have been predicted in different classes of materials and observed in some. A major goal is the identification of measurable properties that directly expose the topological nature of such transitions. Here we focus on the giant-Rashba material bismuth tellurium iodine (BiTeI) which exhibits a pressure-driven phase transition between topological and trivial insulators in three-dimensions. We demonstrate that this transition, which proceeds through an intermediate Weyl semi-metallic state, is accompanied by a giant enhancement of the Berry curvature dipole which can be probed in transport and optoelectronic experiments. From first-principles calculations, we show that the Berrry-dipole --a vector along the polar axis of this material-- has opposite orientations in the trivial and topological insulating phases and peaks at the insulator-to-Weyl critical points, at which the nonlinear Hall conductivity can increase by over two orders of magnitude.

Tracing the $s_\pm$-symmetry in iron pnictides by controlled disorder

Consecutive proton irradiation of iron pnictides reduces the superconducting transition temperature to decrease monotonically. Our systematic optical THz investigations of Ba(Fe$_{0.9}$Co$_{0.1}$)$_2$As$_2$ thin films reveal, however, that the low-energy superconducting gap is first suppressed, but recovers for higher irradiation doses. At the same time the decrease of the superfluid density with disorder comes to a halt. These observations are in excellent agreement with theoretical calculations, which predict a disorder-induced transition of the order parameter from $s_{\pm}$ to $s_{++}$ symmetry. Thereby we solve the longstanding puzzle of the iron pnictides gap symmetry in favor of $s_{\pm}$-symmetry and demonstrate THz spectroscopy as a tool to determine the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter.
