Selection of the ground state on a compact metric graph

We show that the ground state in the Fisher--KPP model on a compact metric graph with Dirichlet conditions on boundary vertices is either trivial (zero) or nontrivial and strictly positive. For positive initial data, we prove that the trivial ground state is globally asymptotically stable if the edges of the metric graph are uniformly short and the nontrivial ground state is globally asymptotically stable if at least one edge is sufficiently long. For the intermediate case, we find a sharp criterion for the existence, uniqueness and global asymptotic stability of the trivial versus nontrivial ground state. Besides standard methods based on the comparison theory, energy minimizers, and the lowest eigenvalue of the graph Laplacian, we develop a novel method based on the period function for differential equations to fully characterize the nontrivial ground state in the particular case of flower graphs.

Recurrent bifurcations of stability spectra for steep Stokes waves in a deep fluid

We study the modulational stability problem for the traveling periodic waves (called Stokes waves) in an infinitely deep fluid by using pseudo-differential operators in conformal variables. We derive the criteria and the normal forms for four bifurcations which are repeated recurrently when the steepness of the Stokes wave is increased towards the highest wave with the peaked profile. The four bifurcations are observed in the following order: (a) new figure-8 bands appearing at each extremal point of speed, (b) degeneration of figure-8 bands resulting in vertical slopes, (c) new circular bands around the origin appearing at each period-doubling bifurcation, and (d) reconnection of figure-$\infty$ bands at each extremal point of energy. Our work uses the analytic theory of Stokes waves developed previously for Babenko's equation. The novelty of our work is the analytic extension of the modulational stability problem for singular pseudo-differential operators in terms of the Floquet parameter. The derivation of the normal form uses some structural assumptions which are known to be true for the Stokes waves. For the first and second bifurcation cycles, we compute numerically with a higher-order accuracy the actual values of wave steepness for which the structural assumptions are satisfied and the numerical coefficients of the normal forms to show the excellent agreement between the normal form theory and the numerical approximations of the spectral bands.

Stability of periodic waves in the model with intensity--dependent dispersion

We study standing periodic waves modeled by the nonlinear Schrodinger equation with the intensity-dependent dispersion coefficient. Spatial periodic profiles are smooth if the frequency of the standing waves is below the limiting frequency, for which the profiles become peaked (piecewise continuously differentiable with a finite jump of the first derivative). We prove that there exist two families of the periodic waves with smooth profiles separated by a homoclinic orbit and the period function (the energy-to-period mapping) is monotonically increasing for the family inside the homoclinic orbit and decreasing for the family outside the homoclinic orbit. This property allows us to derive a sharp criterion for the energetic stability of such standing periodic waves under time evolution if the perturbations are periodic with the same period for both families and, additionally, for the family outside the homoclinic orbit, spatially odd with respect to the half-period. By numerically approximating the sharp stability criterion, we show that both families are energetically stable for small frequencies but become unstable when the frequency approaches the limiting frequency of the peaked waves.

Bifurcations of solitary waves in a coupled system of long and short waves

We consider families of solitary waves in the Korteweg--de Vries (KdV) equation coupled with the linear Schrödinger (LS) equation. This model has been used to describe interactions between long and short waves. To characterize families of solitary waves, we consider a sequence of local (pitchfork) bifurcations of the uncoupled KdV solitons. The first member of the sequence is the KdV soliton coupled with the ground state of the LS equation, which is proven to be the constrained minimizer of energy for fixed mass and momentum. The other members of the sequence are the KdV solitons coupled with the excited states of the LS equation. We connect the first two bifurcations with the exact solutions of the KdV--LS system frequently used in the literature.

Rational solutions for algebraic solitons in the massive Thirring model

An algebraic soliton of the massive Thirring model (MTM) is expressed by the simplest rational solution of the MTM with the spatial decay of $\mathcal{O}(x^{-1})$. The corresponding potential is related to a simple embedded eigenvalue in the Kaup--Newell spectral problem. This work focuses on the hierarchy of rational solutions of the MTM, in which the $N$-th member of the hierarchy describes a nonlinear superposition of $N$ algebraic solitons with identical masses and corresponds to an embedded eigenvalue of algebraic multiplicity $N$. We show that the hierarchy of rational solutions can be constructed by using the double-Wronskian determinants. The novelty of this work is a rigorous proof that each solution is defined by a polynomial of degree $N^2$ with $2N$ arbitrary parameters, which admits $\frac{N (N-1)}{2}$ poles in the upper half-plane and $\frac{N(N+1)}{2}$ poles in the lower half-plane. Assuming that the leading-order polynomials have exactly $N$ real roots, we show that the $N$-th member of the hierarchy describes the slow scattering of $N$ algebraic solitons on the time scale $\mathcal{O}(\sqrt{t})$.

Bright and dark breathers on an elliptic wave in the defocusing mKdV equation

Breathers on an elliptic wave background consist of nonlinear superpositions of a soliton and a periodic wave, both traveling with different wave speeds and interacting periodically in the space-time. For the defocusing modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equation, the construction of general breathers has been an open problem since the elliptic wave is related to the elliptic degeneration of the hyperelliptic solutions of genus two. We have found the new representation of eigenfunctions of the Lax operator associated with the elliptic wave, which enables us to solve this open problem and to construct two families of breathers with bright (elevation) and dark (depression) profiles.

Orbital stability of kinks in the NLS equation with competing nonlinearities

Kinks connecting zero and nonzero equilibria in the NLS equation with competing nonlinearities occur at the special values of the frequency parameter. Since they are minimizers of energy, they are expected to be orbitally stable in the time evolution of the NLS equation. However, the stability proof is complicated by the degeneracy of kinks near the nonzero equilibrium. The main purpose of this work is to give a rigorous proof of the orbital stability of kinks. We give details of analysis for the cubic--quintic NLS equation and show how the proof is extended to the general case.

Stability of intrinsic localized modes on the lattice with competing power nonlinearities

We study the discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation with competing powers (p,q) satisfying 2 <= p < q. The physically relevant cases are given by (p,q) = (2,3), (p,q) = (3,4), and (p,q) = (3,5). In the anticontinuum limit, all intrinsic localized modes are compact and can be classified by their codes, which record one of two nonzero (smaller and larger) states and their sign alternations. By using the spectral stability analysis, we prove that the codes for larger states of the same sign are spectrally and nonlinearly (orbitally) stable, whereas the codes for smaller states of the alternating signs are spectrally stable but have eigenvalues of negative Krein signature. We also identify numerically the spectrally stable codes which consist of stacked combinations of the sign-definite larger states and the sign-alternating smaller states.

Traveling waves in periodic metric graphs via spatial dynamics

The purpose of this work is to introduce a concept of traveling waves in the setting of periodic metric graphs. It is known that the nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger (NLS) equation on periodic metric graphs can be reduced asymptotically on long but finite time intervals to the homogeneous NLS equation, which admits traveling solitary wave solutions. In order to address persistence of such traveling waves beyond finite time intervals, we formulate the existence problem for traveling waves via spatial dynamics. There exist no spatially decaying (solitary) waves because of an infinite-dimensional center manifold in the spatial dynamics formulation. Existence of traveling modulating pulse solutions which are solitary waves with small oscillatory tails at very long distances from the pulse core is proven by using a local center-saddle manifold. We show that the variational formulation fails to capture existence of such modulating pulse solutions even in the singular limit of zero wave speeds where true (standing) solitary waves exist. Propagation of a traveling solitary wave and formation of a small oscillatory tail outside the pulse core is shown in numerical simulations of the NLS equation on the periodic graph.

Instability of the peaked traveling wave in a local model for shallow water waves

The traveling wave with the peaked profile arises in the limit of the family of traveling waves with the smooth profiles. We study the linear and nonlinear stability of the peaked traveling wave by using a local model for shallow water waves, which is related to the Hunter--Saxton equation. The evolution problem is well-defined in the function space $H^1_{\rm per} \cap W^{1,\infty}$, where we derive the linearized equations of motion and study the nonlinear evolution of co-periodic perturbations to the peaked periodic wave by using methods of characteristics. Within the linearized equations, we prove the spectral instability of the peaked traveling wave from the spectrum of the linearized operator in a Hilbert space, which completely covers the closed vertical strip with a specific half-width. Within the nonlinear equations, we prove the nonlinear instability of the peaked traveling wave by showing that the gradient of perturbations grow at the wave peak. By using numerical approximations of the smooth traveling waves and the spectrum of their associated linearized operator, we show that the spectral instability of the peaked traveling wave cannot be obtained in the limit along the family of the spectrally stable smooth traveling waves.

Kink breathers on a traveling wave background in the defocusing modified Korteweg--de Vries equation

We characterize a general traveling periodic wave of the defocusing mKdV (modified Korteweg--de Vries) equation by using a quotient of products of Jacobi's elliptic theta functions. Compared to the standing periodic wave of the defocusing NLS (nonlinear Schrödinger) equation, these solutions are special cases of Riemann's theta function of genus two. Based on our characterization, we derive a new two-parameter solution form which defines a general three-parameter solution form with the scaling transformation. Eigenfunctions of the Lax system for the general traveling periodic wave are also characterized as quotients of products of Jacobi's theta functions. As the main outcome of our analytical computations, we derive a new solution of the defocusing mKdV equation which describes the kink breather propagating on a general traveling wave background.

Bifurcations of unstable eigenvalues for Stokes waves derived from conserved energy

We address Euler's equations for irrotational gravity waves in an infinitely deep fluid rewritten in conformal variables. Stokes waves are traveling waves with the smooth periodic profile. In agreement with the previous numerical results, we give a rigorous proof that the zero eigenvalue bifurcation in the linearized equations of motion for co-periodic perturbations occurs at each extremal point of the energy function versus the steepness parameter, provided that the wave speed is not extremal at the same steepness. We derive the normal form for the unstable eigenvalues and, assisted with numerical approximation of its coefficients, we show that the new unstable eigenvalues emerge only in the direction of increasing steepness.

Instability bands for periodic traveling waves in the modified Korteweg-de Vries equation

Two families of periodic traveling waves exist in the focusing mKdV (modified Korteweg-de Vries) equation. Spectral stability of these waveforms with respect to co-periodic perturbations of the same period has been previously explored by using spectral analysis and variational formulation. By using tools of integrability such as a relation between squared eigenfunctions of the Lax pair and eigenfunctions of the linearized stability problem, we revisit the spectral stability of these waveforms with respect to perturbations of arbitrary periods. In agreement with previous works, we find that one family is spectrally stable for all parameter configurations, whereas the other family is spectrally unstable for all parameter configurations. We show that the onset of the co-periodic instability for the latter family changes the instability bands from figure-$8$ (crossing at the imaginary axis) into figure-$\infty$ (crossing at the real axis).

Traveling periodic waves and breathers in the nonlocal derivative NLS equation

A nonlocal derivative NLS (nonlinear Schrödinger) equation describes modulations of waves in a stratified fluid and a continuous limit of the Calogero--Moser--Sutherland system of particles. For the defocusing version of this equation, we prove the linear stability of the nonzero constant background for decaying and periodic perturbations and the nonlinear stability for periodic perturbations. For the focusing version of this equation, we prove linear and nonlinear stability of the nonzero constant background under some restrictions. For both versions, we characterize the traveling periodic wave solutions by using Hirota's bilinear method, both on the nonzero and zero backgrounds. For each family of traveling periodic waves, we construct families of breathers which describe solitary waves moving across the stable background. A general breather solution with $N$ solitary waves propagating on the traveling periodic wave background is derived in a closed determinant form.

On smooth and peaked traveling waves in a local model for shallow water waves

We introduce a new model equation for Stokes gravity waves based on conformal transformations of Euler's equations. The local version of the model equation is relevant for dynamics of shallow water waves. It allows us to characterize the traveling periodic waves both in the case of smooth and peaked waves and to solve the existence problem exactly, albeit not in elementary functions. Spectral stability of smooth waves with respect to co-periodic perturbations is proven analytically based on the exact count of eigenvalues in a constrained spectral problem.

On a countable sequence of homoclinic orbits arising near a saddle-center point

Exponential small splitting of separatrices in the singular perturbation theory leads generally to nonvanishing oscillations near a saddle--center point and to nonexistence of a true homoclinic orbit. It was conjectured long ago that the oscillations may vanish at a countable set of small parameter values if there exist a quadruplet of singularities in the complex analytic extension of the limiting homoclinic orbit. The present paper gives a rigorous proof of this conjecture for a particular fourth-order equation relevant to the traveling wave reduction of the modified Korteweg--de Vries equation with the fifth-order dispersion term.

Exponential and algebraic double-soliton solutions of the massive Thirring model

The newly discovered exponential and algebraic double-soliton solutions of the massive Thirring model in laboratory coordinates are placed in the context of the inverse scattering transform. We show that the exponential double-solitons correspond to double isolated eigenvalues in the Lax spectrum, whereas the algebraic double-solitons correspond to double embedded eigenvalues on the imaginary axis, where the continuous spectrum resides. This resolves the long-standing conjecture that multiple embedded eigenvalues may exist in the spectral problem associated with the massive Thirring model. To obtain the exponential double-solitons, we solve the Riemann--Hilbert problem with the reflectionless potential in the case of a quadruplet of double poles in each quadrant of the complex plane. To obtain the algebraic double-solitons, we consider the singular limit where the quadruplet of double poles degenerates into a symmetric pair of double embedded poles on the imaginary axis.

Stability analysis of breathers for coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations

We investigate the spectral stability of non-degenerate vector soliton solutions and the nonlinear stability of breather solutions for the coupled nonlinear Schrodinger (CNLS) equations. The non-degenerate vector solitons are spectrally stable despite the linearized operator admits either embedded or isolated eigenvalues of negative Krein signature. The nonlinear stability of breathers is obtained by the Lyapunov method with the help of the squared eigenfunctions due to integrability of the CNLS equations.
