Peaked Stokes waves as solutions of Babenko's equation

Babenko's equation describes traveling water waves in holomorphic coordinates. It has been used in the past to obtain properties of Stokes waves with smooth profiles analytically and numerically. We show in the deep-water limit that properties of Stokes waves with peaked profiles can also be recovered from the same Babenko's equation. In order to develop the local analysis of singularities, we rewrite Babenko's equation as a fixed-point problem near the maximal elevation level. As a by-product, our results rule out a corner point singularity in the holomorphic coordinates, which has been obtained in a local version of Babenko's equation.

Stability of standing periodic waves in the massive Thirring model

We analyze the spectral stability of the standing periodic waves in the massive Thirring model in laboratory coordinates. Since solutions of the linearized MTM equation are related to the squared eigenfunctions of the linear Lax system, the spectral stability of the standing periodic waves can be studied by using their Lax spectrum. Standing periodic waves are classified based on eight eigenvalues which coincide with the endpoints of the spectral bands of the Lax spectrum. Combining analytical and numerical methods, we show that the standing periodic waves are spectrally stable if and only if the eight eigenvalues are located either on the imaginary axis or along the diagonals of the complex plane.

On the long-wave approximation of solitary waves in cylindrical coordinates

We address justification and solitary wave solutions of the cylindrical KdV equation which is formally derived as a long wave approximation of radially symmetric waves in a two-dimensional nonlinear dispersive system. For a regularized Boussinesq equation, we prove error estimates between true solutions of this equation and the associated cylindrical KdV approximation in the L2-based spaces. The justification result holds in the spatial dynamics formulation of the regularized Boussinesq equation. We also prove that the class of solitary wave solutions considered previously in the literature does not contain solutions in the L2-based spaces. This presents a serious obstacle in the applicability of the cylindrical KdV equation for modeling of radially symmetric solitary waves since the long wave approximation has to be performed separately in different space-time regions.

Algebraic solitons in the massive Thirring model

We present exact solutions describing dynamics of two algebraic solitons in the massive Thirring model. Each algebraic soliton corresponds to a simple embedded eigenvalue in the Kaup--Newell spectral problem and attains the maximal mass among the family of solitary waves traveling with the same speed. By coalescence of speeds of the two algebraic solitons, we find a new solution for an algebraic double-soliton which corresponds to a double embedded eigenvalue. We show that the double-soliton attains the double mass of a single soliton and describes a slow interaction of two identical algebraic solitons.

On the Existence of Generalized Breathers and Transition Fronts in Time-Periodic Nonlinear Lattices

We prove the existence of a class of time-localized and space-periodic breathers (called q-gap breathers) in nonlinear lattices with time-periodic coefficients. These q-gap breathers are the counterparts to the classical space-localized and time-periodic breathers found in space-periodic systems. Using normal form transformations, we establish rigorously the existence of such solutions with oscillating tails (in the time domain) that can be made arbitrarily small, but finite. Due to the presence of the oscillating tails, these solutions are coined generalized q-gap breathers. Using a multiple-scale analysis, we also derive a tractable amplitude equation that describes the dynamics of breathers in the limit of small amplitude. In the presence of damping, we demonstrate the existence of transition fronts that connect the trivial state to the time-periodic ones. The analytical results are corroborated by systematic numerical simulations.

On the extinction of multiple shocks in scalar viscous conservation laws

We are interested in the dynamics of interfaces, or zeros, of shock waves in general scalar viscous conservation laws with a locally Lipschitz continuous flux function, such as the modular Burgers' equation. We prove that all interfaces coalesce within finite time, leaving behind either a single interface or no interface at all. Our proof relies on mass and energy estimates, regularization of the flux function, and an application of the Sturm theorems on the number of zeros of solutions of parabolic problems. Our analysis yields an explicit upper bound on the time of extinction in terms of the initial condition and the flux function. Moreover, in the case of a smooth flux function, we characterize the generic bifurcations arising at a coalescence event with and without the presence of odd symmetry. We identify associated scaling laws describing the local interface dynamics near collision. Finally, we present an extension of these results to the case of anti-shock waves converging to asymptotic limits of opposite signs. Our analysis is corroborated by numerical simulations in the modular Burgers' equation and its regularizations.

Traveling modulating pulse solutions with small tails for a nonlinear wave equation in periodic media

Traveling modulating pulse solutions consist of a small amplitude pulse-like envelope moving with a constant speed and modulating a harmonic carrier wave. Such solutions can be approximated by solitons of an effective nonlinear Schrodinger equation arising as the envelope equation. We are interested in a rigorous existence proof of such solutions for a nonlinear wave equation with spatially periodic coefficients. Such solutions are quasi-periodic in a reference frame co-moving with the envelope. We use spatial dynamics, invariant manifolds, and near-identity transformations to construct such solutions on large domains in time and space. Although the spectrum of the linearized equations in the spatial dynamics formulation contains infinitely many eigenvalues on the imaginary axis or in the worst case the complete imaginary axis, a small denominator problem is avoided when the solutions are localized on a finite spatial domain with small tails in far fields.

Bright and dark breathers of the Benjamin-Ono equation on the traveling periodic background

The Benjamin-Ono (BO) equation describes long internal waves of small amplitude in deep fluids. Compared to its counterpart for shallow fluids, the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation, the BO equation admits exact solutions for the traveling periodic and solitary waves as well as their interactions expressed in elementary (trigonometric and polynomial) functions. Motivated by a recent progress for the KdV equation, we discover here two scenarios of the soliton-periodic wave interactions which result in the propagation of either elevation (bright) or depression (dark) breathers (periodic in time coherent structures). The existence of two different breathers is related to the band-gap spectrum of the Lax operator associated with the traveling periodic wave. Given a simple structure of the exact solutions in the BO equation, we obtain a closed-form expression for multi-solitons interacting with the traveling periodic wave.

Turing bifurcation in the Swift-Hohenberg equation on deterministic and random graphs

The Swift-Hohenberg equation (SHE) is a partial differential equation that explains how patterns emerge from a spatially homogeneous state. It has been widely used in the theory of pattern formation. Following a recent study by Bramburger and Holzer [2], we consider discrete SHE on deterministic and random graphs. The two families of the discrete models share the same continuum limit in the form of a nonlocal SHE on a circle. The analysis of the continuous system, parallel to the analysis of the classical SHE, shows bifurcations of spatially periodic solutions at critical values of the control parameters. However, the proximity of the discrete models to the continuum limit does not guarantee that the same bifurcations take place in the discrete setting in general, because some of the symmetries of the continuous model do not survive discretization. We use the center manifold reduction and normal forms to obtain precise information about the number and stability of solutions bifurcating from the homogeneous state in the discrete models on deterministic and sparse random graphs. Moreover, we present detailed numerical results for the discrete SHE on the nearest-neighbor and small-world graphs.

Dark breathers on a snoidal wave background in the defocusing MKDV equation

We present a new exact solution to the defocusing modified Korteweg-de Vries equation to describe the interaction of a dark soliton and a traveling periodic wave. The solution (which we refer to as to the dark breather) is obtained by using the Darboux transformation with the eigenfunctions of the Lax system expressed in terms of the Jacobi theta functions. Properties of elliptic functions including the quarter-period translations in the complex plane are applied to transform the solution to the simplest form. We explore the characteristic properties of these dark breathers and show that they propagate faster than the periodic wave (in the same direction) and attain maximal localization at a specific parameter value which is explicitly computed.

On the transverse stability of smooth solitary waves in a two-dimensional Camassa-Holm equation

We consider the propagation of smooth solitary waves in a two-dimensional generalization of the Camassa--Holm equation. We show that transverse perturbations to one-dimensional solitary waves behave similarly to the KP-II theory. This conclusion follows from our two main results: (i) the double eigenvalue of the linearized equations related to the translational symmetry breaks under a transverse perturbation into a pair of the asymptotically stable resonances and (ii) small-amplitude solitary waves are linearly stable with respect to transverse perturbations.

Dynamics of the black soliton in a regularized nonlinear Schrodinger equation

We consider a family of regularized defocusing nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equations proposed in the context of the cubic NLS equation with a bounded dispersion relation. The time evolution is well-posed if the black soliton is perturbed by a small perturbation in the Sobolev space $H^s(\R)$ with s > 1/2. We prove that the black soliton is spectrally stable (unstable) if the regularization parameter is below (above) some explicitly specified threshold. We illustrate the stable and unstable dynamics of the perturbed black solitons by using the numerical finite-difference method. The question of orbital stability of the black soliton is left open due to the mismatch of the function spaces for the energy and momentum conservation.

Rogue waves arising on the standing periodic waves in the Ablowitz-Ladik equation

We study the standing periodic waves in the semi-discrete integrable system modelled by the Ablowitz-Ladik equation. We have related the stability spectrum to the Lax spectrum by separating the variables and by finding the characteristic polynomial for the standing periodic waves. We have also obtained rogue waves on the background of the modulationally unstable standing periodic waves by using the end points of spectral bands and the corresponding eigenfunctions. The magnification factors for the rogue waves have been computed analytically and compared with their continuous counterparts. The main novelty of this work is that we explore a non-standard linear Lax system, which is different from the standard Lax representation of the Ablowitz-Ladik equation.

Ground state of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a harmonic potential in the energy-critical case

Ground state of the energy-critical Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a harmonic potential can be constructed variationally. It exists in a finite interval of the eigenvalue parameter. The supremum norm of the ground state vanishes at one end of this interval and diverges to infinity at the other end. We explore the shooting method in the limit of large norm to prove that the ground state is pointwise close to the Aubin-Talenti solution of the energy-critical wave equation in near field and to the confluent hypergeometric function in far field. The shooting method gives the precise dependence of the eigenvalue parameter versus the supremum norm.

KdV breathers on a cnoidal wave background

Using the Darboux transformation for the Korteweg-de Vries equation, we construct and analyze exact solutions describing the interaction of a solitary wave and a traveling cnoidal wave. Due to their unsteady, wavepacket-like character, these wave patterns are referred to as breathers. Both elevation (bright) and depression (dark) breather solutions are obtained. The nonlinear dispersion relations demonstrate that the bright (dark) breathers propagate faster (slower) than the background cnoidal wave. Two-soliton solutions are obtained in the limit of degeneration of the cnoidal wave. In the small amplitude regime, the dark breathers are accurately approximated by dark soliton solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. These results provide insight into recent experiments on soliton-dispersive shock wave interactions and soliton gases.

Stability of smooth periodic traveling waves in the Degasperis-Procesi equation

We derive a precise energy stability criterion for smooth periodic waves in the Degasperis--Procesi (DP) equation. Compared to the Camassa-Holm (CH) equation, the number of negative eigenvalues of an associated Hessian operator changes in the existence region of smooth perodic waves. We utilize properties of the period function with respect to two parameters in order to obtain a smooth existence curve for the family of smooth periodic waves of a fixed period. The energy stability condition is derived on parts of this existence curve which correspond to either one or two negative eigenvalues of the Hessian operator. We show numerically that the energy stability condition is satisfied on either part of the curve and prove analytically that it holds in a neighborhood of the boundary of the existence region of smooth periodic waves.

KP-II approximation for a scalar FPU system on a 2D square lattice

We consider a scalar Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) system on a square 2D lattice. The Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP-II) equation can be derived by means of multiple scale expansions to describe unidirectional long waves of small amplitude with slowly varying transverse modulations. We show that the KP-II approximation makes correct predictions about the dynamics of the original scalar FPU system. An existing approximation result is extended to an arbitrary direction of wave propagation. The main novelty of this work is the use of Fourier transform in the analysis of the FPU system in strain variables.

Solitons on the rarefactive wave background via the Darboux transformation

Rarefactive waves and dispersive shock waves are generated from the step-like initial data in many nonlinear evolution equations including the classical example of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation. When a solitary wave is injected on the step-like initial data, it is either transmitted over the background or trapped in the rarefactive wave. We show that the transmitted soliton can be obtained by using the Darboux transformation for the KdV equation. On the other hand, no trapped soliton can be obtained by using the Darboux transformation and we show with numerical simulations that the trapped soliton disappears in the long-time dynamics of the rarefactive wave.
