Extinction of multiple shocks in the modular Burgers equation

We consider multiple shock waves in the Burgers' equation with a modular advection term. It was previously shown that the modular Burgers' equation admits a traveling viscous shock with a single interface, which is stable against smooth and exponentially localized perturbations. In contrast, we suggest in the present work with the help of energy estimates and numerical simulations that the evolution of shock waves with multiple interfaces leads to finite-time coalescence of two consecutive interfaces. We formulate a precise scaling law of the finite-time extinction supported by the interface equations and by numerical simulations.

Stability of black solitons in optical systems with intensity-dependent dispersion

Black solitons are identical in the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation with intensity-dependent dispersion and the cubic defocusing NLS equation. We prove that the intensity-dependent dispersion introduces new properties in the stability analysis of the black soliton. First, the spectral stability problem possesses only isolated eigenvalues on the imaginary axis. Second, the energetic stability argument holds in Sobolev spaces with exponential weights. Third, the black soliton persists with respect to addition of a small decaying potential and remains spectrally stable when it is pinned to the minimum points of the effective potential. The same model exhibits a family of traveling dark solitons for every wave speed and we incorporate properties of these dark solitons for small wave speeds in the analysis of orbital stability of the black soliton.

Stability of smooth solitary waves in the b-Camassa-Holm equation

We derive the precise stability criterion for smooth solitary waves in the b-family of Camassa-Holm equations. The smooth solitary waves exist on the constant background. In the integrable cases b = 2 and b = 3, we show analytically that the stability criterion is satisfied and smooth solitary waves are orbitally stable with respect to perturbations in $H^3(\mathbb{R})$. In the non-integrable cases, we show numerically and asymptotically that the stability criterion is satisfied for every b > 1. The orbital stability theory relies on a different Hamiltonian formulation compared to the Hamiltonian formulations available in the integrable cases.

Standing waves on quantum graphs

We review evolutionary models on quantum graphs expressed by linear and nonlinear partial differential equations. Existence and stability of the standing waves trapped on quantum graphs are studied by using methods of the variational theory, dynamical systems on a phase plane, and the Dirichlet-to-Neumann mappings.

Morse index for the ground state in the energy supercritical Gross--Pitaevskii equation

The ground state of the energy super-critical Gross--Pitaevskii equation with a harmonic potential converges in the energy space to the singular solution in the limit of large amplitudes. The ground state can be represented by a solution curve which has either oscillatory or monotone behavior, depending on the dimension of the system and the power of the focusing nonlinearity. We address here the monotone case for the cubic nonlinearity in the spatial dimensions $d \geq 13$. By using the shooting method for the radial Schrödinger operators, we prove that the Morse index of the ground state is finite and is independent of the (large) amplitude. It is equal to the Morse index of the limiting singular solution, which can be computed from numerical approximations. The numerical results suggest that the Morse index of the ground state is one and that it is stable in the time evolution of the cubic Gross--Pitaevskii equation in dimensions $d \geq 13$.

Periodic waves of the modified KdV equation as minimizers of a new variational problem

Periodic waves of the modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equation are identified in the context of a new variational problem with two constraints. The advantage of this variational problem is that its non-degenerate local minimizers are stable in the time evolution of the mKdV equation, whereas the saddle points are unstable. We explore the analytical representation of periodic waves given by Jacobi elliptic functions and compute numerically critical points of the constrained variational problem. A broken pitchfork bifurcation of three smooth solution families is found. Two families represent (stable) minimizers of the constrained variational problem and one family represents (unstable) saddle points.

Justification of the KP-II approximation in dynamics of two-dimensional FPU systems

Dynamics of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) system on a two-dimensional square lattice is considered in the limit of small-amplitude long-scale waves with slow transverse modulations. In the absence of transverse modulations, dynamics of such waves, even at an oblique angle with respect to the square lattice, is known to be described by the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation. For the three basic directions (horizontal, vertical, and diagonal), we prove that the modulated waves are well described by the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP-II) equation. The result was expected long ago but proving rigorous bounds on the approximation error turns out to be complicated due to the nonlocal terms of the KP-II equation and the vector structure of the FPU systems on two-dimensional lattices. We have obtained these error bounds by extending the local well-posedness result for the KP-II equation in Sobolev spaces and by controlling the error terms with energy estimates. The bounds are useful in the analysis of transverse stability of solitary and periodic waves in two-dimensional FPU systems due to many results available for the KP-II equation.

Green's function for the fractional KdV equation on the periodic domain via Mittag-Leffler's function

The linear operator $c + (-Δ)^{α/2}$, where $c > 0$ and $(-Δ)^{α/2}$ is the fractional Laplacian on the periodic domain, arises in the existence of periodic travelling waves in the fractional Korteweg--de Vries equation. We establish a relation of the Green's function of this linear operator with the Mittag--Leffler function, which was previously used in the context of Riemann--Liouville's and Caputo's fractional derivatives. By using this relation, we prove that Green's function is strictly positive and single-lobe (monotonically decreasing away from the maximum point) for every $c > 0$ and every $α\in (0,2]$. On the other hand, we argue from numerical approximations that in the case of $α\in (2,4]$, the Green's function is positive and single-lobe for small $c$ and non-positive and non-single lobe for large $c$.

Domain walls in the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations with the harmonic potential

We study the existence and variational characterization of steady states in a coupled system of Gross--Pitaevskii equations modeling two-component Bose-Einstein condensates with the magnetic field trapping. The limit with no trapping has been the subject of recent works where domain walls have been constructed and several properties, including their orbital stability have been derived. Here we focus on the full model with the harmonic trapping potential and characterize minimizers according to the value of the coupling parameter $γ$. We first establish a rigorous connection between the two problems in the Thomas-Fermi limit via $Γ$-convergence. Then, we identify the ranges of $γ$ for which either the symmetric states $(γ< 1)$ or the uncoupled states $(γ> 1)$ are minimizers. Domain walls arise as minimizers in a subspace of the energy space with a certain symmetry for some $γ> 1$. We study bifurcation of the domain walls and furthermore give numerical illustrations of our results.

Spectral instability of peakons in the b-family of the Camassa--Holm equations

We prove spectral instability of peakons in the $b$-family of Camassa--Holm equations in $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ that includes the integrable cases of $b = 2$ and $b = 3$. We start with a linearized operator defined on functions in $H^1(\mathbb{R}) \cap W^{1,\infty}(\mathbb{R})$ and extend it to a linearized operator defined on weaker functions in $L^2(\mathbb{R})$. For $b \neq \frac{5}{2}$, the spectrum of the linearized operator in $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ is proved to cover a closed vertical strip of the complex plane. For $b = \frac{5}{2}$, the strip shrinks to the imaginary axis, but an additional pair of real eigenvalues exists due to projections to the peakon and its spatial translation. The spectral instability results agree with the linear instability results in the case of the Camassa-Holm equation for $b = 2$.

Multi-pulse edge-localized states on quantum graphs

Edge-localized stationary states of the focusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation on a general quantum graph are considered in the limit of large mass. Compared to the previous works, we include arbitrary multi-pulse positive states which approach asymptotically to a composition of N solitons, each sitting on a bounded (pendant, looping, or internal) edge. Not only we prove that such states exist in the limit of large mass, but also we compute the precise Morse index (the number of negative eigenvalues in the corresponding linearized operator). In the case of the edge-localized N-soliton states on the pendant and looping edges, we prove that the Morse index is exactly N. The technical novelty of this work is achieved by avoiding elliptic functions (and related exponentially small scalings) and closing the existence arguments in terms of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps for relevant parts of the given graph.

Ground state in the energy super-critical Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a harmonic potential

The energy super-critical Gross--Pitaevskii equation with a harmonic potential is revisited in the particular case of cubic focusing nonlinearity and dimension d > 4. In order to prove the existence of a ground state (a positive, radially symmetric solution in the energy space), we develop the shooting method and deal with a one-parameter family of classical solutions to an initial-value problem for the stationary equation. We prove that the solution curve (the graph of the eigenvalue parameter versus the supremum) is oscillatory for d <= 12 and monotone for d >= 13. Compared to the existing literature, rigorous asymptotics are derived by constructing three families of solutions to the stationary equation with functional-analytic rather than geometric methods.

Stability of smooth periodic traveling waves in the Camassa-Holm equation

Smooth periodic travelling waves in the Camassa--Holm (CH) equation are revisited. We show that these periodic waves can be characterized in two different ways by using two different Hamiltonian structures. The standard formulation, common to the Korteweg--de Vries (KdV) equation, has several disadvantages, e.g., the period function is not monotone and the quadratic energy form may have two rather than one negative eigenvalues. We explore the nonstandard formulation and prove that the period function is monotone and the quadratic energy form has only one simple negative eigenvalue. We deduce a precise condition for the spectral and orbital stability of the smooth periodic travelling waves and show numerically that this condition is satisfied in the open region where the smooth periodic waves exist.

Modulational instability of periodic standing waves in the derivative NLS equation

We consider the periodic standing waves in the derivative nonlinear Schrodinger (DNLS) equation arising in plasma physics. By using a newly developed algebraic method with two eigenvalues, we classify all periodic standing waves in terms of eight eigenvalues of the Kaup-Newell spectral problem located at the end points of the spectral bands outside the real line. The analytical work is complemented with the numerical approximation of the spectral bands, this enables us to fully characterize the modulational instability of the periodic standing waves in the DNLS equation.

Rogue waves on the background of periodic standing waves in the derivative NLS equation

The derivative nonlinear Schrodinger (DNLS) equation is the canonical model for dynamics of nonlinear waves in plasma physics and optics. We study exact solutions describing rogue waves on the background of periodic standing waves in the DNLS equation. We show that the space-time localization of a rogue wave is only possible if the periodic standing wave is modulationally unstable. If the periodic standing wave is modulationally stable, the rogue wave solutions degenerate into algebraic solitons propagating along the background and interacting with the periodic standing waves. Maximal amplitudes of rogue waves are found analytically and confirmed numerically.

Stability and interaction of compactons in the sublinear KdV equation

Compactons are studied in the framework of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation with the sublinear nonlinearity. Compactons represent localized bell-shaped waves of either polarity which propagate to the same direction as waves of the linear KdV equation. Their amplitude and width are inverse proportional to their speed. The energetic stability of compactons with respect to symmetric compact perturbations with the same support is proven analytically. Dynamics of compactons is studied numerically, including evolution of pulse-like disturbances and interactions of compactons of the same or opposite polarities. Compactons interact inelastically, though almost restore their shapes after collisions. Compactons play a two-fold role of the long-living soliton-like structures and of the small-scale waves which spread the wave energy.

Instability of double-periodic waves in the nonlinear Schrodinger equation

It is shown how to compute the instability rates for the double-periodic solutions to the cubic NLS (nonlinear Schrodinger) equation by using the Lax linear equations. The wave function modulus of the double-periodic solutions is periodic both in space and time coordinates; such solutions generalize the standing waves which have the time-independent and space-periodic wave function modulus. Similar to other waves in the NLS equation, the double-periodic solutions are spectrally unstable and this instability is related to the bands of the Lax spectrum outside the imaginary axis. A simple numerical method is used to compute the unstable spectrum and to compare the instability rates of the double-periodic solutions with those of the standing periodic waves.

Asymptotic stability of viscous shocks in the modular Burgers equation

Dynamics of viscous shocks is considered in the modular Burgers equation, where the time evolution becomes complicated due to singularities produced by the modular nonlinearity. We prove that the viscous shocks are asymptotically stable under odd and general perturbations. For the odd perturbations, the proof relies on the reduction of the modular Burgers equation to a linear diffusion equation on a half-line. For the general perturbations, the proof is developed by converting the time-evolution problem to a system of linear equations coupled with a nonlinear equation for the interface position. Exponential weights in space are imposed on the initial data of general perturbations in order to gain the asymptotic decay of perturbations in time. We give numerical illustrations of asymptotic stability of the viscous shocks under general perturbations.
