Uniform doping of graphene close to the charge neutrality point by polymer-assisted spontaneous assembly of molecular dopants

Tuning the charge carrier density of two-dimensional (2D) materials by incorporating dopants into the crystal lattice is a challenging task. An attractive alternative is the surface transfer doping by adsorption of molecules on 2D crystals, which can lead to ordered molecular arrays. However, such systems, demonstrated in ultra-high vacuum conditions (UHV), are often unstable in ambient conditions. Here we show that air-stable doping of epitaxial graphene on SiC - achieved by spin-coating deposition of 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-tetracyano-quino-dimethane (F4TCNQ) incorporated in poly (methyl-methacrylate) - proceeds via the spontaneous accumulation of dopants at the graphene-polymer interface and by the formation of a charge-transfer complex that yields low-disorder, charge-neutral graphene with carrier mobilities ~70,000 cm2/Vs at cryogenic temperatures. The assembly of dopants on 2D materials assisted by a polymer matrix, demonstrated by spin coating wafer-scale substrates in ambient conditions, opens up a scalable technological route towards expanding the functionality of 2D materials.

Transport properties of ultrathin YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ nanowires: a route to single photon detection

We report on the growth and characterization of ultrathin YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ (YBCO) films on MgO (110) substrates, which exhibit superconducting properties at thicknesses down to 3 nm. YBCO nanowires, with thicknesses down to 10 nm and widths down to 65 nm, have been also successfully fabricated. The nanowires protected by a Au capping layer show superconducting properties close to the as-grown films, and critical current densities, which are only limited by vortex dynamics. The 10 nm thick YBCO nanowires without the Au capping present hysteretic current voltage characteristics, characterized by a voltage switch which drives the nanowires directly from the superconducting to the normal state. Such bistability is associated in NbN nanowires to the presence of localized normal domains within the superconductor. The presence of the voltage switch, in ultrathin nanostructures characterized by high sheet resistance values, though preserving high quality superconducting properties, make our nanowires very attractive devices to engineer single photon detectors.

Suspended InAs nanowire Josephson junctions assembled via dielectrophoresis

We present a novel technique for the realization of suspended Josephson junctions based on InAs semiconductor nanowires. The devices are assembled using a technique of drop-casting guided by dielectrophoresis that allows to finely align the nanostructures on top of the electrodes. The proposed architecture removes the interaction between the nanowire and the substrate which is known to influence disorder and the orientation of the Rashba vector. The relevance of this approach in view of the implementation of Josephson junctions based on High-Temperature Superconductors is discussed.

Coherent transport in extremely underdoped Nd1.2Ba1.8Cu3Oz nanostructures

Proximity-effect and resistance magneto-fluctuations measurements in submicron Nd1.2Ba1.8Cu3Oz (NBCO) nano-loops are reported to investigate coherent charge transport in the non-superconducting state. We find an unexpected inhibition of cooper pair transport, and a destruction of the induced superconductivity, by lowering the temperature from 6K to 250mK. This effect is accompanied by a significant change in the conductance-voltage characteristics and in the zero bias conductance response to the magnetic field pointing to the activation of a strong pair breaking mechanism at lower temperature. The data are discussed in the framework of mesoscopic effects specific to superconducting nanostructures, proximity effect and high temperature superconductivity.

Little-Parks effect in single YBaCuO sub-micron rings

The properties of single submicron high-temperature superconductor (HTS) rings are investigated. The Little-Parks effect is observed and is accompanied by an anomalous behavior of the magnetic dependence of the resistance, which we ascribe to non-uniform vorticity (superfluid angular momentum) within the ring arms. This effect is linked to the peculiar HTS-relationship between the values of the coherence length and the London penetration depth.
