Dynamics of cold bosons in optical lattices: Effects of higher Bloch bands

The extended effective multiorbital Bose-Hubbard-type Hamiltonian which takes into account higher Bloch bands, is discussed for boson systems in optical lattices, with emphasis on dynamical properties, in relation with current experiments. It is shown that the renormalization of Hamiltonian parameters depends on the dimension of the problem studied. Therefore, mean field phase diagrams do not scale with the coordination number of the lattice. The effect of Hamiltonian parameters renormalization on the dynamics in reduced one-dimensional optical lattice potential is analyzed. We study both the quasi-adiabatic quench through the superfluid-Mott insulator transition and the absorption spectroscopy, that is energy absorption rate when the lattice depth is periodically modulated.

Numerical Computation of Dynamically Important Excited States of Many-Body Systems

We present an extension of the time-dependent Density Matrix Renormalization Group (t-DMRG), also known as Time Evolving Block Decimation algorithm (TEBD), allowing for the computation of dynamically important excited states of one-dimensional many-body systems. We show its practical use for analyzing the dynamical properties and excitations of the Bose-Hubbard model describing ultracold atoms loaded in an optical lattice from a Bose-Einstein condensate. This allows for a deeper understanding of nonadiabaticity in experimental realizations of insulating phases.

Experimental Test of Universality of the Anderson Transition

We experimentally test the universality of the Anderson three dimensional metal-insulator transition. Nine sets of parameters controlling the microscopic details of this second order phase transition have been tested. The corresponding critical exponents are independent (within $2σ$) of these microscopic details, and the average value $1.63\pm0.05$ is in very good agreement with the numerically predicted value, $ν= 1.58$.

Coherent flash of light emitted by a cold atomic cloud

When a resonant laser sent on an optically thick cold atomic cloud is abruptly switched off, a coherent flash of light is emitted in the forward direction. This transient phenomenon is observed due to the highly resonant character of the atomic scatterers. We analyze quantitatively its spatio-temporal properties and show very good agreement with theoretical predictions. Based on complementary experiments, the phase of the coherent field is reconstructed without interferometric tools.

Number-conserving master equation theory for a dilute Bose-Einstein condensate

We describe the transition of $N$ weakly interacting atoms into a Bose-Einstein condensate within a number-conserving quantum master equation theory. Based on the separation of time scales for condensate formation and non-condensate thermalization, we derive a master equation for the condensate subsystem in the presence of the non-condensate environment under the inclusion of all two body interaction processes. We numerically monitor the condensate particle number distribution during condensate formation, and derive a condition under which the unique equilibrium steady state of a dilute, weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensate is given by a Gibbs-Boltzmann thermal state of $N$ non-interacting atoms.

Between a metal and an insulator: the critical state of the Anderson transition

Using a three-frequency one-dimensional kicked rotor experimentally realized with a cold atomic gas, we study the transport properties at the critical point of the metal-insulator Anderson transition. We accurately measure the time-evolution of an initially localized wavepacket and show that it displays at the critical point a scaling invariance characteristic of this second-order phase transition. The shape of the momentum distribution at the critical point is found to be in excellent agreement with the analytical form deduced from self-consistent theory of localization.

Classical diffusive dynamics for the quasiperiodic kicked rotor

We study the classical dynamics of a quasiperiodic kicked rotor, whose quantum counterpart is known to be an equivalent of the 3D Anderson model. Using this correspondence allowed for a recent experimental observation of the Anderson transition with atomic matter waves. In such a context, it is particularly important to assert the chaotic character of the classical dynamics of this system. We show here that it is a 3D anisotropic diffusion. Our simple analytical predictions for the associated diffusion tensor are found in good agreement with the results of numerical simulations.

Anderson localization of solitons

At low temperature, a quasi-one-dimensional ensemble of atoms with attractive interaction forms a bright soliton. When exposed to a weak and smooth external potential, the shape of the soliton is hardly modified, but its center-of-mass motion is affected. We show that in a spatially correlated disordered potential, the quantum motion of a bright soliton displays Anderson localization. The localization length can be much larger than the soliton size and could be observed experimentally.

One-dimensional Anderson localization in certain correlated random potentials

We study Anderson localization of ultracold atoms in weak, one-dimensional speckle potentials, using perturbation theory beyond Born approximation. We show the existence of a series of sharp crossovers (effective mobility edges) between energy regions where localization lengths differ by orders of magnitude. We also point out that the correction to the Born term explicitly depends on the sign of the potential. Our results are in agreement with numerical calculations in a regime relevant for experiments. Finally, we analyze our findings in the light of a diagrammatic approach.

Observation of the Anderson Metal-Insulator Transition with Atomic Matter Waves: Theory and Experiment

Using a cold atomic gas exposed to laser pulses -- a realization of the chaotic quasiperiodic kicked rotor with three incommensurate frequencies -- we study experimentally and theoretically the Anderson metal-insulator transition in three dimensions. Sensitive measurements of the atomic wavefunction and the use of finite-size scaling techniques make it possible to unambiguously demonstrate the existence of a quantum phase transition and to measure its critical exponents. By taking proper account of systematic corrections to one-parameter scaling, we show the universality of the critical exponent $ν=1.59\pm0.01,$ which is found to be equal to the one previously computed for the Anderson model.

Enhancement of radiation trapping for quasi-resonant scatterers at low temperature

We present a transport equation for the incoherent propagation of radiation inside a quasi-resonant atomic gas at low temperature. The derivation is based on a generalized Bethe-Salpeter equation taking into account the motion of the atoms. The obtained equation is similar to the radiative transfer equation. It is solved numerically by an original Monte Carlo approach in the case of a slab geometry. The partial frequency redistribution caused by the small velocity of the scatterers make the emitted flux outside the system and the energy density inside the medium to behave differently than in the case of complete frequency redistribution. In particular, the long time dependence of the specific intensity (escape factor) is slightly different from the Holstein prediction.

Breakdown of adiabaticity when loading ultra-cold atoms in optical lattices

Realistic simulations of current ultra-cold atoms experiments in optical lattices show that the ramping up of the optical lattice is significantly nonadiabatic, implying that experimentally prepared Mott insulators are not really in the ground state of the atomic system. The nonadiabaticity is even larger in the presence of a secondary quasi-periodic lattice simulating "disorder". Alternative ramping schemes are suggested that improve the adiabaticity when the disorder is not too large.

Photonic Hall effect in cold atomic clouds

On the basis of exact numerical simulations and analytical calculations, we describe qualitatively and quantitatively the interference processes at the origin of the photonic Hall effect for resonant Rayleigh (point-dipole) scatterers in a magnetic field. For resonant incoming light, the induced giant magneto-optical effects result in relative Hall currents in the percent range, three orders of magnitude larger than with classical scatterers. This suggests that the observation of the photonic Hall effect in cold atomic vapors is within experimental reach.

Compression as a tool to detect Bose glass in cold atoms experiments

We suggest that measuring the variation of the radius of an atomic cloud when the harmonic tap confinement is varied make it possible to monitor the disappearance of the insulating Mott phase of an ultracold atomic gas trapped in a disordered optical lattice. This paves the way for an unambiguous identification of a Bose glass phase in the system.

Accurate determination of the superfluid-insulator transition in the one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model

The quantum phase transition point between the insulator and the superfluid phase at unit filling factor of the infinite one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model is numerically computed with a high accuracy, better than current state of the art calculations. The method uses the infinite system version of the time evolving block decimation algorithm, here tested in a challenging case.

Experimental observation of the Anderson transition with atomic matter waves

We realize experimentally an atom-optics quantum chaotic system, the quasiperiodic kicked rotor, which is equivalent to a 3D disordered system, that allow us to demonstrate the Anderson metal-insulator transition. Sensitive measurements of the atomic wavefunction dynamics and the use of finite-size scaling techniques make it possible to extract both the critical parameters and the critical exponent of the transition, which is in good agreement with the value obtained in numerical simulations of the 3D Anderson model.

Quantum scaling laws in the onset of dynamical delocalization

We study the destruction of dynamical localization, experimentally observed in an atomic realization of the kicked rotor, by a deterministic Hamiltonian perturbation, with a temporal periodicity incommensurate with the principal driving. We show that the destruction is gradual, with well defined scaling laws for the various classical and quantum parameters, in sharp contrast with predictions based on the analogy with Anderson localization.
