Designer-Driven Topology Optimization for Pipelined Analog to Digital Converters

This paper suggests a practical "hybrid" synthesis methodology which integrates designer-derived analytical models for system-level description with simulation-based models at the circuit level. We show how to optimize stage-resolution to minimize the power in a pipelined ADC. Exploration (via detailed synthesis) of several ADC configurations is used to show that a 4-3-2... resolution distribution uses the least power for a 13-bit 40 MSPS converter in a 0.25 $μ$m CMOS process.

The BlueGene/L Supercomputer

The architecture of the BlueGene/L massively parallel supercomputer is described. Each computing node consists of a single compute ASIC plus 256 MB of external memory. The compute ASIC integrates two 700 MHz PowerPC 440 integer CPU cores, two 2.8 Gflops floating point units, 4 MB of embedded DRAM as cache, a memory controller for external memory, six 1.4 Gbit/s bi-directional ports for a 3-dimensional torus network connection, three 2.8 Gbit/s bi-directional ports for connecting to a global tree network and a Gigabit Ethernet for I/O. 65,536 of such nodes are connected into a 3-d torus with a geometry of 32x32x64. The total peak performance of the system is 360 Teraflops and the total amount of memory is 16 TeraBytes.

Status of the QCDSP project

We describe the completed 8,192-node, 0.4Tflops machine at Columbia as well as the 12,288-node, 0.6Tflops machine assembled at the RIKEN Brookhaven Research Center. Present performance as well as our experience in commissioning these large machines is presented. We outline our on-going physics program and explain how the configuration of the machine is varied to support a wide range of lattice QCD problems, requiring a variety of machine sizes. Finally a brief discussion is given of future prospects for large-scale lattice QCD machines.

Anomalous Chiral Symmetry Breaking above the QCD Phase Transition

We study the anomalous breaking of U_A(1) symmetry just above the QCD phase transition for zero and two flavors of quarks, using a staggered fermion, lattice discretization. The properties of the QCD phase transition are expected to depend on the degree of U_A(1) symmetry breaking in the transition region. For the physical case of two flavors, we carry out extensive simulations on a 16^3 x 4 lattice, measuring a difference in susceptibilities which is sensitive to U_A(1) symmetry and which avoids many of the staggered fermion discretization difficulties. The results suggest that anomalous effects are at or below the 15% level.

QCDSP - A status report

The QCDSP machine at Columbia University has grown to 2,048 nodes achieving a peak speed of 100 Gigaflops. Software for quenched and Hybrid Monte Carlo (HMC) evolution schemes has been developed for staggered fermions, with support for Wilson and clover fermions under development. We provide an overview of the runtime environment, the current status of the QCDSP construction program and preliminary results not presented elsewhere in these proceedings.

Dependence of QCD hadron masses on the number of dynamical quarks

We have studied the hadron spectrum while varying the number of light dynamical quarks when the physical lattice spacing and volume are held fixed relative to the rho mass. For two and zero flavors of staggered fermions, we find the nucleon to rho mass ratios (extrapolated to zero valence quark mass) are very similar. However, for four flavors the ratio is 7% (2 standard deviations) above the two flavor result.

Excited states in the full QCD hadron spectrum on a $16^3 \times 40$ lattice

We report the hadron mass spectrum obtained on a $16^3 \times 40$ lattice at $β= 5.7$ using two flavors of staggered fermions with $m a = 0.01$. We calculate the masses of excited states that have the same quantum numbers as the $π$, $ρ$ and $N$. They are obtained by a combined analysis of the hadron correlators from sources of size $16^3$ and $8^3$. We also report on the hadron spectrum for a wide range of valence quark masses.

Chiral Phase Transition at Strong Coupling in Lattice QCD

We study the chiral phase transition with staggered fermions on the lattice at finite temperature in the strong coupling limit. The thermodynamic potential is derived in the large $d$ approximation where $d+1$ is the dimension of space time. Our calculation is simpler than the conventional method and leads to a simple physical interpretation for the approximation scheme.

Hadron masses on a 16^3 x 40 lattice at β= 5.7

We report on the hadron mass spectrum obtained on a 16^3 x 40 lattice in full QCD at β= 5.7 using two flavors of staggered fermions with m a = 0.01. We study the effective mass plateaus for different sized sources. Our mass results are slightly lighter than our earlier 16^3 x 32 calculation. The Landau gauge Δis quite different from the Coulomb gauge Δ.
