Unleashing Generalization of End-to-End Autonomous Driving with Controllable Long Video Generation

Using generative models to synthesize new data has become a de-facto standard in autonomous driving to address the data scarcity issue. Though existing approaches are able to boost perception models, we discover that these approaches fail to improve the performance of planning of end-to-end autonomous driving models as the generated videos are usually less than 8 frames and the spatial and temporal inconsistencies are not negligible. To this end, we propose Delphi, a novel diffusion-based long video generation method with a shared noise modeling mechanism across the multi-views to increase spatial consistency, and a feature-aligned module to achieves both precise controllability and temporal consistency. Our method can generate up to 40 frames of video without loss of consistency which is about 5 times longer compared with state-of-the-art methods. Instead of randomly generating new data, we further design a sampling policy to let Delphi generate new data that are similar to those failure cases to improve the sample efficiency. This is achieved by building a failure-case driven framework with the help of pre-trained visual language models. Our extensive experiment demonstrates that our Delphi generates a higher quality of long videos surpassing previous state-of-the-art methods. Consequentially, with only generating 4% of the training dataset size, our framework is able to go beyond perception and prediction tasks, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, boost the planning performance of the end-to-end autonomous driving model by a margin of 25%.

Determination of impact parameter for CEE with digi-input neural networks

The impact parameter characterizes the centrality in nucleus-nucleus collision geometry. The determination of impact parameters in real experiments is usually based on the reconstructed particle attributes or the derived event-level observables. For the scheduled Cooler-storage-ring External-target Experiment (CEE), the low beam energy reduces correlation between the impact parameter and charged particle multiplicity, which decreases the validity of the explicit determination methods. This work investigates a few neural network-based models that directly take the digitized signals from the external Time-of-flight detectors as input. The model with the best performance shows a mean absolute error of 0.479 fm with simulated U-U collisions at 0.5 AGeV. The performances of the models implemented with digi inputs are compared with reference models with phase space inputs, showing the capability of neural networks to handle the original but potentially interrelated digitized signal information.

Privacy-Preserving Face Recognition in Hybrid Frequency-Color Domain

Face recognition technology has been deployed in various real-life applications. The most sophisticated deep learning-based face recognition systems rely on training millions of face images through complex deep neural networks to achieve high accuracy. It is quite common for clients to upload face images to the service provider in order to access the model inference. However, the face image is a type of sensitive biometric attribute tied to the identity information of each user. Directly exposing the raw face image to the service provider poses a threat to the user's privacy. Current privacy-preserving approaches to face recognition focus on either concealing visual information on model input or protecting model output face embedding. The noticeable drop in recognition accuracy is a pitfall for most methods. This paper proposes a hybrid frequency-color fusion approach to reduce the input dimensionality of face recognition in the frequency domain. Moreover, sparse color information is also introduced to alleviate significant accuracy degradation after adding differential privacy noise. Besides, an identity-specific embedding mapping scheme is applied to protect original face embedding by enlarging the distance among identities. Lastly, secure multiparty computation is implemented for safely computing the embedding distance during model inference. The proposed method performs well on multiple widely used verification datasets. Moreover, it has around 2.6% to 4.2% higher accuracy than the state-of-the-art in the 1:N verification scenario.

Gradient estimates for $Δ_pu-|\nabla u|^q+b(x)|u|^{r-1}u=0$ on a complete Riemannian manifold and Liouville type theorems

In this paper the Nash-Moser iteration method is used to study the gradient estimates of solutions to the quasilinear elliptic equation $Δ_p u-|\nabla u|^q+b(x)|u|^{r-1}u=0$ defined on a complete Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$. When $b(x)\equiv0$, a unified Cheng-Yau type estimate of the solutions to this equation is derived. Regardless of whether this equation is defined on a manifold or a region of Euclidean space, certain technical and geometric conditions posed in \cite[Theorem E, F]{MR3261111} are weakened and hence some of the estimates due to Bidaut-Véron, Garcia-Huidobro and Véron (see \cite[Theorem E, F]{MR3261111}) are improved. In addition, we extend their results to the case $p>n=\dim(M)$. When $b(x)$ does not vanish, we can also extend some estimates for positive solutions to the above equation defined on a region of the Euclidean space due to Filippucci-Sun-Zheng \cite{filippucci2022priori} to arbitrary solutions to this equation on a complete Riemannian manifold. Even in the case of Euclidean space, the estimates for positive solutions in \cite{filippucci2022priori} and our results can not cover each other.

Chemisorption Induced Formation of Biphenylene Dimer on Surfaces

We report an example that demonstrates the clear interdependence between surface-supported reactions and molecular adsorption configurations. Two biphenyl-based molecules with two and four bromine substituents, i.e. 2,2-dibromo-biphenyl (DBBP) and 2,2,6,6-tetrabromo-1,1-biphenyl (TBBP), show completely different reaction pathways on a Ag(111) surface, leading to the selective formation of dibenzo[e,l]pyrene and biphenylene dimer, respectively. By combining low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy, synchrotron radiation photoemission spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations, we unravel the underlying reaction mechanism. After debromination, a bi-radical biphenyl can be stabilized by surface Ag adatoms, while a four-radical biphenyl undergoes spontaneous intramolecular annulation due to its extreme instability on Ag(111). Such different chemisorption-induced precursor states between DBBP and TBBP consequently lead to different reaction pathways after further annealing. In addition, using bond-resolving scanning tunneling microscopy and scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we determine the bond length alternation of biphenylene dimer product with atomic precision, which contains four-, six-, and eight-membered rings. The four-membered ring units turn out to be radialene structures.

An CUSUM Test with Observation-Adjusted Control Limits in Change Detection

In this paper, we not only propose an new optimal sequential test of sum of logarithmic likelihood ratio (SLR) but also present the CUSUM sequential test (control chart, stopping time) with the observation-adjusted control limits (CUSUM-OAL) for monitoring quickly and adaptively the change in distribution of a sequential observations. Two limiting relationships between the optimal test and a series of the CUSUM-OAL tests are established. Moreover, we give the estimation of the in-control and the out-of-control average run lengths (ARLs) of the CUSUM-OAL test. The theoretical results are illustrated by numerical simulations in detecting mean shifts of the observations sequence.

Monolithic Integration of Embedded III-V Lasers on SOI

Silicon photonic integration has gained great success in many application fields owing to the excellent optical device properties and complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) compatibility. Realizing monolithic integration of III-V lasers and silicon photonic components on single silicon wafer is recognized as a long-standing obstacle for ultra-dense photonic integration, which can provide considerable economical, energy efficient and foundry-scalable on-chip light sources, that has not been reported yet. Here, we demonstrate embedded InAs/GaAs quantum dot (QD) lasers directly grown on trenched silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrate, enabling monolithic integration with butt-coupled silicon waveguides. By utilizing the patterned grating structures inside pre-defined SOI trenches and unique epitaxial method via molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), high-performance embedded InAs QD lasers with out-coupled silicon waveguide are achieved on such template. By resolving the epitaxy and fabrication challenges in such monolithic integrated architecture, embedded III-V lasers on SOI with continuous-wave lasing up to 85 oC are obtained. The maximum output power of 6.8 mW can be measured from the end tip of the butt-coupled silicon waveguides, with estimated coupling efficiency of approximately -7.35 dB. The results presented here provide a scalable and low-cost epitaxial method for realization of on-chip light sources directly coupling to the silicon photonic components for future high-density photonic integration.

The Role of the Hercules Autonomous Vehicle During the COVID-19 Pandemic: An Autonomous Logistic Vehicle for Contactless Goods Transportation

Since early 2020, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has spread rapidly across the world. As at the date of writing this article, the disease has been globally reported in 223 countries and regions, infected over 108 million people and caused over 2.4 million deaths (https://covid19.who.int/, accessed on Feb. 17, 2021). Avoiding person-to-person transmission is an effective approach to control and prevent the pandemic. However, many daily activities, such as transporting goods in our daily life, inevitably involve person-to-person contact. Using an autonomous logistic vehicle to achieve contact-less goods transportation could alleviate this issue. For example, it can reduce the risk of virus transmission between the driver and customers. Moreover, many countries have imposed tough lockdown measures to reduce the virus transmission (e.g., retail, catering) during the pandemic, which causes inconveniences for human daily life. Autonomous vehicle can deliver the goods bought by humans, so that humans can get the goods without going out. These demands motivate us to develop an autonomous vehicle, named as Hercules, for contact-less goods transportation during the COVID-19 pandemic. The vehicle is evaluated through real-world delivering tasks under various traffic conditions.

Optimal Sequential Tests for Detection of Changes under Finite measure space for Finite Sequences of Networks

This paper considers the change-point problem for finite sequences of networks. To avoid the difficulty of computing the normalization coefficient, such as in Exponential random graphical models (ERGMs) and Markov networks, we construct a finite measure space with measure ratio statistics. A new performance measure of detection delay is proposed to detect the changes in distribution of the network. And an optimal sequential test is proposed under the performance measure. The good performance of the optimal sequential test is illustrated numerically on ERGMs and Erdos-Rényi network sequences.

This article presents a homogeneity test for testing the equality of several high-dimensional covariance matrices for stationary processes with ignoring the assumption of normality. We give the asymptotic distribution of the proposed test. The simulation illustrates that the proposed test has perfect performance. Moreover, the power of the test can approach any high probability uniformly on a set of covariance matrices.

Improving the time resolution of the MRPC detector using deep-learning algorithms

The multi-gap resistive plate chambers (MRPCs) will be used as the Time-of-Flight (ToF) system in the Solenoidal Large Intensity Device (SoLID). The time resolution required by the experiment for the MRPC system is 20 ps in order to make a 3 $σ$ separation of the $π/K$ created in the collisions. To achieve this goal, the whole system including the MRPC detector, the front-end electronics and the readout system will be upgraded. Based on the new system, a time reconstruction algorithm using a combined LSTM (ComLSTM) neural network is proposed. The best time resolution achieved with this algorithm in a cosmic ray test is 16.8 ps, which largely improves the timing ability of the MRPC detector and well satisfies the requirement of the SoLID.

Atomistic structural mechanism for the glass transition: Entropic contribution

A popular Adam--Gibbs scenario has suggested that the excess entropy of glass and liquid over crystal dominates the dynamical arrest at the glass transition with exclusive contribution from configurational entropy over vibrational entropy. However, an intuitive structural rationale for the emergence of frozen dynamics in relation to entropy is still lacking. Here we study these issues by atomistically simulating the vibrational, configurational, as well as total entropy of a model glass former over their crystalline counterparts for the entire temperature range spanning from glass to liquid. Besides confirming the Adam--Gibbs entropy scenario, the concept of Shannon information entropy is introduced to characterize the diversity of atomic-level structures, which undergoes a striking variation across the glass transition, and explains the change found in the excess configurational entropy. Hence, the hidden structural mechanism underlying the entropic kink at the transition is revealed in terms of proliferation of certain atomic structures with a higher degree of centrosymmetry, which are more rigid and possess less nonaffine softening modes. In turn, the proliferation of these centrosymmetric (rigid) structures leads to the freezing-in of the dynamics beyond which further structural rearrangements become highly unfavourable, thus explaining the kink in the configurational entropy at the transition.

A Robust Stereo Camera Localization Method with Prior LiDAR Map Constrains

In complex environments, low-cost and robust localization is a challenging problem. For example, in a GPSdenied environment, LiDAR can provide accurate position information, but the cost is high. In general, visual SLAM based localization methods become unreliable when the sunlight changes greatly. Therefore, inexpensive and reliable methods are required. In this paper, we propose a stereo visual localization method based on the prior LiDAR map. Different from the conventional visual localization system, we design a novel visual optimization model by matching planar information between the LiDAR map and visual image. Bundle adjustment is built by using coplanarity constraints. To solve the optimization problem, we use a graph-based optimization algorithm and a local window optimization method. Finally, we estimate a full six degrees of freedom (DOF) pose without scale drift. To validate the efficiency, the proposed method has been tested on the KITTI dataset. The results show that our method is more robust and accurate than the state-of-art ORB-SLAM2.

Road Curb Detection Using A Novel Tensor Voting Algorithm

Road curb detection is very important and necessary for autonomous driving because it can improve the safety and robustness of robot navigation in the outdoor environment. In this paper, a novel road curb detection method based on tensor voting is presented. The proposed method processes the dense point cloud acquired using a 3D LiDAR. Firstly, we utilize a sparse tensor voting approach to extract the line and surface features. Then, we use an adaptive height threshold and a surface vector to extract the point clouds of the road curbs. Finally, we utilize the height threshold to segment different obstacles from the occupancy grid map. This also provides an effective way of generating high-definition maps. The experimental results illustrate that our proposed algorithm can detect road curbs with near real-time performance.

Automatic Calibration of Dual-LiDARs Using Two Poles Stickered with Retro-Reflective Tape

Multi-LiDAR systems have been prevalently applied in modern autonomous vehicles to render a broad view of the environments. The rapid development of 5G wireless technologies has brought a breakthrough for current cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) applications. Therefore, a novel localization and perception system in which multiple LiDARs are mounted around cities for autonomous vehicles has been proposed. However, the existing calibration methods require specific hard-to-move markers, ego-motion, or good initial values given by users. In this paper, we present a novel approach that enables automatic multi-LiDAR calibration using two poles stickered with retro-reflective tape. This method does not depend on prior environmental information, initial values of the extrinsic parameters, or movable platforms like a car. We analyze the LiDAR-pole model, verify the feasibility of the algorithm through simulation data, and present a simple method to measure the calibration errors w.r.t the ground truth. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach gains better flexibility and higher accuracy when compared with the state-of-the-art approach.

A detailed study on the intrinsic time resolution of the future MRPC detector

A challenging goal of 20 ps for the total time resolution of the Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chambers (MRPCs) system has been recently addressed by high energy physics experiments. In order to meet this requirement, one should have a deeper understanding of the detector physics and the factors that contribute to the intrinsic time resolution of the MRPC, which are studied in this paper. The sources of the timing uncertainties, their influences and the relationship with the detector geometry are analyzed. A comparison between the time resolutions obtained using two different simulation algorithms is presented. The obtained results are useful for the design of the timing MRPCs with an improved performance, and meanwhile offer guidance for the R&D activities in the field.

Improving the spatial resolution of NICA/MPD ECAL with new reconstruction methods

A Shashlyk-type electromagnetic calorimeter (ECal) will be used in the Multi-purpose Detector at Nuclotron-based Ion Collider facility to study the properties of nuclear matter. In this experiment, the ECal detector is responsible for measuring the energy and position of the incident particles, and identifying them with the information obtained from itself and other detectors. This paper analyzes the position resolution of the Tsinghua ECal modules using the data from a beam test in DESY. Several reconstruction methods are studied in detail. With a deep learning based algorithm, the position resolution of the prototypes achieves less than 3.8 mm for 1.6 GeV electron beam, which is improved by about 30% compared to that of traditional charge center of gravity method.

Non-existence of non-trivial normal elements in the Iwasawa Algebra of Chevalley groups

For a prime $p>2$, let $G$ be a semi-simple, simply connected, split Chevalley group over $\mathbb{Z}_p$, $G(1)$ be the first congruence kernel of $G$ and $Ω_{G(1)}$ be the mod-$p$ Iwasawa algebra defined over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_p$. Ardakov, Wei, Zhang have shown that if $p$ is a "nice prime " ($p \geq 5$ and $p \nmid n+1$ if the Lie algebra of $G(1)$ is of type $A_n$), then every non-zero normal element in $Ω_{G(1)}$ is a unit. Furthermore, they conjecture in their paper that their nice prime condition is superfluous. The main goal of this article is to provide an entirely new proof of Ardakov, Wei and Zhang's result using explicit presentation of Iwasawa algebra developed by the second author of this article and thus eliminating the nice prime condition, therefore proving their conjecture.
