VSS: A Storage System for Video Analytics [Technical Report]

We present a new video storage system (VSS) designed to decouple high-level video operations from the low-level details required to store and efficiently retrieve video data. VSS is designed to be the storage subsystem of a video data management system (VDBMS) and is responsible for: (1) transparently and automatically arranging the data on disk in an efficient, granular format; (2) caching frequently-retrieved regions in the most useful formats; and (3) eliminating redundancies found in videos captured from multiple cameras with overlapping fields of view. Our results suggest that VSS can improve VDBMS read performance by up to 54%, reduce storage costs by up to 45%, and enable developers to focus on application logic rather than video storage and retrieval.

TASM: A Tile-Based Storage Manager for Video Analytics

Modern video data management systems store videos as a single encoded file, which significantly limits possible storage level optimizations. We design, implement, and evaluate TASM, a new tile-based storage manager for video data. TASM uses a feature in modern video codecs called "tiles" that enables spatial random access into encoded videos. TASM physically tunes stored videos by optimizing their tile layouts given the video content and a query workload. Additionally, TASM dynamically tunes that layout in response to changes in the query workload or if the query workload and video contents are incrementally discovered. Finally, TASM also produces efficient initial tile layouts for newly ingested videos. We demonstrate that TASM can speed up subframe selection queries by an average of over 50% and up to 94%. TASM can also improve the throughput of the full scan phase of object detection queries by up to 2X.

Quantum versus Classical Regime in Circuit Quantum Acoustodynamics

We experimentally study a circuit quantum acoustodynamics system, which consists of a superconducting artificial atom, coupled to both a two-dimensional surface acoustic wave resonator and a one-dimensional microwave transmission line. The strong coupling between the artificial atom and the acoustic wave resonator is confirmed by the observation of the vacuum Rabi splitting at the base temperature of dilution refrigerator. We show that the propagation of microwave photons in the microwave transmission line can be controlled by a few phonons in the acoustic wave resonator. Furthermore, we demonstrate the temperature effect on the measurements of the Rabi splitting and temperature induced transitions from high excited dressed states. We find that the spectrum structure of two-peak for the Rabi splitting becomes into those of several peaks, and gradually disappears with the increase of the environmental temperature $T$. The quantum-to-classical transition is observed around the crossover temperature $T_{c}$, which is determined via the thermal fluctuation energy $k_{B}T$ and the characteristic energy level spacing of the coupled system. Experimental results agree well with the theoretical simulations via the master equation of the coupled system at different effective temperatures.

Multi-Axis Support-Free Printing of Freeform Parts with Lattice Infill Structures

In additive manufacturing, infill structures are commonly used to reduce the weight and cost of a solid part. Currently, most infill structure generation methods are based on the conventional 2.5-axis printing configuration, which, although able to satisfy the self-supporting condition on the infills, suffer from the well-known stair-case effect on the finished surface and the need of extensive support for overhang features. In this paper, based on the emerging continuous multi-axis printing configuration, we present a new lattice infill structure generation algorithm, which is able to achieve both the self-supporting condition for the infills and the support-free requirement at the boundary surface of the part. The algorithm critically relies on the use of three mutually orthogonal geodesic distance fields that are embedded in the tetrahedral mesh of the solid model. The intersection between the iso-geodesic distance surfaces of these three geodesic distance fields naturally forms the desired lattice of infill structure, while the density of the infills can be conveniently controlled by adjusting the iso-values. The lattice infill pattern in each curved slicing layer is trimmed to conform to an Eulerian graph so to generate a continuous printing path, which can effectively reduce the nozzle retractions during the printing process. In addition, to cater to the collision-free requirement and to improve the printing efficiency, we also propose a printing sequence optimization algorithm for determining a collision-free order of printing of the connected lattice infills, which seeks to reduce the air-move length of the nozzle. Ample experiments in both computer simulation and physical printing are performed, and the results give a preliminary confirmation of the advantages of our methodology.

Fast implementation of synchrosqueezing transform based on downsampling for large-scale vibration signal analysis

Synchrosqueezing transform (SST) is a useful tool for vibration signal analysis due to its high time-frequency (TF) concentration and reconstruction properties. However, existing SST requires much processing time for large-scale data. In this paper, some fast implementation methods of SST based on downsampled short-time Fourier transform (STFT) are proposed. By controlling the downsampling factor both in time and frequency, combined with the proposed selective reassignment and frequency subdivision scheme, one can keep a balance between efficiency and accuracy according to practical needs. Moreover, the reconstruction property is available, accomplished by an approximate but direct inverse formula under downsampling. The effects of parameters on the concentration, computing efficiency, and reconstruction accuracy are also investigated quantitatively, followed by a mathematic model of reassignment behavior with decimate factors. Experimental results on an aero-engine and a spindle show that the fast implementation of SST can effectively characterize the non-stationary characteristics of the large-scale vibration signal to reveal the mechanism of mechanical systems.

Geodesic Distance Field-based Curved Layer Volume Decomposition for Multi-Axis Support-free Printing

This paper presents a new curved layer volume decomposition method for multi-axis support-free printing of freeform solid parts. Given a solid model to be printed that is represented as a tetrahedral mesh, we first establish a geodesic distance field embedded on the mesh, whose value at any vertex is the geodesic distance to the base of the model. Next, the model is naturally decomposed into curved layers by interpolating a number of iso-geodesic distance surfaces (IGDSs). These IGDSs morph from bottom-up in an intrinsic and smooth way owing to the nature of geodesics, which will be used as the curved printing layers that are friendly to multi-axis printing. In addition, to cater to the collision-free requirement and to improve the printing efficiency, we also propose a printing sequence optimization algorithm for determining the printing order of the IGDSs, which helps reduce the air-move path length. Ample experiments in both computer simulation and physical printing are performed, and the experimental results confirm the advantages of our method.

Measuring Mother-Infant Emotions By Audio Sensing

It has been suggested in developmental psychology literature that the communication of affect between mothers and their infants correlates with the socioemotional and cognitive development of infants. In this study, we obtained day-long audio recordings of 10 mother-infant pairs in order to study their affect communication in speech with a focus on mother's speech. In order to build a model for speech emotion detection, we used the Ryerson Audio-Visual Database of Emotional Speech and Song (RAVDESS) and trained a Convolutional Neural Nets model which is able to classify 6 different emotions at 70% accuracy. We applied our model to mother's speech and found the dominant emotions were angry and sad, which were not true. Based on our own observations, we concluded that emotional speech databases made with the help of actors cannot generalize well to real-life settings, suggesting an active learning or unsupervised approach in the future.

Satellite-Based Entanglement Distribution Over 1200 kilometers

Long-distance entanglement distribution is essential both for foundational tests of quantum physics and scalable quantum networks. Owing to channel loss, however, the previously achieved distance was limited to ~100 km. Here, we demonstrate satellite-based distribution of entangled photon pairs to two locations separated by 1203 km on the Earth, through satellite-to-ground two-downlink with a sum of length varies from 1600 km to 2400 km. We observe a survival of two-photon entanglement and a violation of Bell inequality by 2.37+/-0.09 under strict Einstein locality conditions. The obtained effective link efficiency at 1200 km in this work is over 12 orders of magnitude higher than the direct bidirectional transmission of the two photons through the best commercial telecommunication fibers with a loss of 0.16 dB/km.
