Intramode correlations enhanced phase sensitivities in an SU(1,1) interferometer

We theoretically derive the lower and upper bounds of quantum Fisher information (QFI) of an SU(1,1) interferometer whatever the input state chosen. According to the QFI, the crucial resource for quantum enhancement is shown to be large intramode correlations indicated by the Mandel $Q$-parameter. For a photon-subtracted squeezed vacuum state with high super-Poissonian statistics in one input port and a coherent state in the other input port, the quantum Cramér-Rao bound of the SU(1,1) interferometer can beat $1/\langle\hat{N}\rangle$ scaling in presence of large fluctuations in the number of photons, with a given fixed input mean number of photons. The definition of the Heisenberg limit (HL) should take into account the amount of fluctuations. The HL considering the number fluctuation effect may be the ultimate phase limit.

The Bi-directional Moving Structures in a Coronal Bright Point

We report the bi-directional moving structures in a coronal bright point (CBP) on 2015 July 14. It is observed by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) onboard Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). This CBP has a lifetime of about 10 minutes, and a curved shape. The observations show that many bright structures are moving intermittently outward from the CBP brightness core. Such moving structures are clearly seen at AIA 171, 193, 211, 131, 94, 335 and 304 A, slit-jaw (SJI) 1330 and 1400 A. In order to analyze these moving structures, the CBP is cut along the moving direction with a curved slit from the AIA and SJI images. Then we can obtain the time-distance slices, including the intensity and intensity-derivative diagrams, from which, the moving structures are recognized as the oblique streaks, and they are characterized by the bi-direction, simultaneity, symmetry, and periodicity. The average speed is around 300 km/s, while the typically period is about 90 s. All these features (including the bi-directional flows and their periodicity) can be detected simultaneously at all the 9 wavelengths. This CBP takes place at the site between a small pair of magnetic polarities. High time resolution observations show that they are moving close to each other during its lifetime. These facts support the magnetic reconnection model of the CBP and the bi-directional moving structures could be the observational outflows after the reconnection. Therefore, they can be as the direct observation evidence of the magnetic reconnection.

Non-orthogonal multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann method for incompressible thermal flows

In this paper, a non-orthogonal multiple-relaxation-time (MRT) lattice Boltzmann (LB) method for simulating incompressible thermal flows is presented. In the method, the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations and temperature equation are solved separately by two different MRT-LB equations, which are developed based on non-orthogonal basis vectors obtained from the combinations of the lattice velocity components. The macroscopic governing equations of incompressible thermal flows can be recovered from the method through the Chapman-Enskog analysis in the incompressible limit. Numerical simulations of several typical two-dimensional problems are carried out to validate the proposed method. It is found that the present results are in good agreement with the analytical solutions and/or other numerical results reported in the literature. Furthermore, the non-orthogonal MRT-LB model shows better numerical stability in comparison with the BGK-LB model, and the grid convergence tests indicate that the present MRT-LB method has a second-order convergence rate in space.

Characterizing the stabilization size for semi-implicit Fourier-spectral method to phase field equations

Recent results in the literature provide computational evidence that stabilized semi-implicit time-stepping method can efficiently simulate phase field problems involving fourth-order nonlinear dif- fusion, with typical examples like the Cahn-Hilliard equation and the thin film type equation. The up-to-date theoretical explanation of the numerical stability relies on the assumption that the deriva- tive of the nonlinear potential function satisfies a Lipschitz type condition, which in a rigorous sense, implies the boundedness of the numerical solution. In this work we remove the Lipschitz assumption on the nonlinearity and prove unconditional energy stability for the stabilized semi-implicit time-stepping methods. It is shown that the size of stabilization term depends on the initial energy and the perturba- tion parameter but is independent of the time step. The corresponding error analysis is also established under minimal nonlinearity and regularity assumptions.

Gradient bounds for a thin film epitaxy equation

We consider a gradient flow modeling the epitaxial growth of thin films with slope selection. The surface height profile satisfies a nonlinear diffusion equation with biharmonic dissipation. We establish optimal local and global wellposedness for initial data with critical regularity. To understand the mechanism of slope selection and the dependence on the dissipation coefficient, we exhibit several lower and upper bounds for the gradient of the solution in physical dimensions $d\le 3$.

MODA: MOdule Differential Analysis for weighted gene co-expression network

Gene co-expression network differential analysis is designed to help biologists understand gene expression patterns under different condition. By comparing different gene co-expression networks we may find conserved part as well as condition specific set of genes. Taking the network as a collection as modules, we use a sample-saving method to construct condition-specific gene co-expression network, and identify differentially expressed subnetworks as conserved or condition specific modules which may be associated with biological processes. We have implemented the method as an R package which establishes a pipeline from expression profile to biological explanations. The usefulness of the method is also demonstrated by synthetic data as well as Daphnia magna gene expression data under different environmental stresses.

Phase sensitivity at the Heisenberg limit in an SU(1,1) interferometer via parity detection

We theoretically investigate the phase sensitivity with parity detection on an SU(1,1) interferometer with a coherent state combined with a squeezed vacuum state. This interferometer is formed with two parametric amplifiers for beam splitting and recombination instead of beam splitters. We show that the sensitivity of estimation phase approaches Heisenberg limit and give the corresponding optimal condition. Moreover, we derive the quantum Cramér-Rao bound of the SU(1,1) interferometer.

Effects of losses in the hybrid atom-light interferometer

Enhanced Raman scattering can be obtained by injecting a seeded light field which is correlated with the initially prepared collective atomic excitation. This Raman amplification process can be used to realize atom-light hybrid interferometer. We numerically calculate the phase sensitivities and the signal-to-noise ratios of this interferometer with the method of homodyne detection and intensity detection, and give their differences between this two methods. In the presence of loss of light field and atomic decoherence the measure precision will be reduced which can be explained by the break of the intermode decorrelation conditions of output modes

Maximizing Kirchhoff index of unicyclic graphs with fixed maximum degree

The Kirchhoff index of a connected graph is the sum of resistance distances between all unordered pairs of vertices in the graph. Its considerable applications are found in a variety of fields. In this paper, we determine the maximum value of Kirchhoff index among the unicyclic graphs with fixed number of vertices and maximum degree, and characterize the corresponding extremal graph.

Observational Evidences of Electron-driven Evaporation in two Solar Flares

We have explored the relationship between hard X-ray (HXR) emissions and Doppler velocities caused by the chromospheric evaporation in two X1.6 class solar flares on 2014 September 10 and October 22, respectively. Both events display double ribbons and Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) slit is fixed on one of their ribbons from the flare onset. The explosive evaporations are detected in these two flares. The coronal line of Fe XXI 1354.09 A shows blue shifts, but chromospheric line of C I 1354.29 A shows red shifts during the impulsive phase. The chromospheric evaporation tends to appear at the front of flare ribbon. Both Fe XXI and C I display their Doppler velocities with a `increase-peak-decrease' pattern which is well related to the `rising-maximum- decay' phase of HXR emissions. Such anti-correlation between HXR emissions and Fe XXI Doppler shifts, and correlation with C I Doppler shifts indicate the electron-driven evaporation in these two flares.

SU(1,1)-type light-atom correlated interferometer

The quantum correlation of light and atomic collective excitation can be used to compose an SU(1,1)-type hybrid light-atom interferometer, where one arm in optical SU(1,1) interferometer is replaced by the atomic collective excitation. The phase-sensing probes include not only the photon field but also the atomic collective excitation inside the interferometer. For a coherent squeezed state as the phase-sensing field, the phase sensitivity can approach the Heisenberg limit under the optimal conditions. We also study the effects of the loss of light field and the dephasing of atomic excitation on the phase sensitivity. Since nonlinear processes are involved in this interferometer, they can couple a variety of different waves and form new types of hybrid interferometers, which provides a new method for basic measurement using the hybrid interferometers.

A Double AR Model Without Intercept: an Alternative to Modeling Nonstationarity and Heteroscedasticity

This paper presents a double AR model without intercept (DARWIN model) and provides us a new way to study the non-stationary heteroskedastic time series. It is shown that the DARWIN model is always non-stationary and heteroskedastic, and its sample properties depends on the Lyapunov exponent. An easy-to-implement estimator is proposed for the Lyapunov exponent, and it is unbiased, strongly consistent and asymptotically normal. Based on this estimator, a powerful test is constructed for testing the stability of the model. Moreover, this paper proposes the quasi-maximum likelihood estimator (QMLE) for the DARWIN model, which has an explicit form. The strong consistency and asymptotical normality of the QMLE are established regardless of the sign of the Lyapunov exponent. Simulation studies are conducted to assess the performance of the estimation and testing and an empirical example is given for illustrating the usefulness of the DARWIN model.

A Coordinated X-ray and Optical Campaign of the Nearest Massive Eclipsing Binary, delta Orionis Aa: III. Analysis of Optical Photometric MOST and Spectroscopic (Ground Based) Variations

We report on both high-precision photometry from the MOST space telescope and ground-based spectroscopy of the triple system delta Ori A consisting of a binary O9.5II+early-B (Aa1 and Aa2) with P = 5.7d, and a more distant tertiary (O9 IV P > 400 yrs). This data was collected in concert with X-ray spectroscopy from the Chandra X-ray Observatory. Thanks to continuous coverage for 3 weeks, the MOST light curve reveals clear eclipses between Aa1 and Aa2 for the first time in non-phased data. From the spectroscopy we have a well constrained radial velocity curve of Aa1. While we are unable to recover radial velocity variations of the secondary star, we are able to constrain several fundamental parameters of this system and determine an approximate mass of the primary using apsidal motion. We also detected second order modulations at 12 separate frequencies with spacings indicative of tidally influenced oscillations. These spacings have never been seen in a massive binary, making this system one of only a handful of such binaries which show evidence for tidally induced pulsations.

The study of the aging behavior on large area MCP-PMT

Aging experiments of a novel type of large area MCP-PMT made by JUNO collaboration were conducted. In these aging experiments, the multi-photoelectron spectrum and single photoelectron spectrum were measured daily,as well as the MCP resistance of the second PMT before and after the experiment. Two PMTs were aged successivelyfor cross check. The first PMT was aged for 52 days, while the other one was aged for 84 days. In order to study the mechanism of the aging process, the high voltage on the second PMT was increased to accelerate its aging process when the cumulative output of charge from its anode was about 4 C. From our study, it can be known that large area MCP-PMT aging had a strong relationship with the related MCPs. In accordance with the PMT aging curve,a PMT aging model was setup and a general aging formula was given.

Strong illposedness of the incompressible Euler equation in integer $C^m$ spaces

We consider the $d$-dimensional incompressible Euler equations. We show strong illposedness of velocity in any $C^m$ spaces whenever $m\ge 1$ is an \emph{integer}. More precisely, we show for a set of initial data dense in the $C^m$ topology, the corresponding solutions lose $C^m$ regularity instantaneously in time. In the $C^1$ case, our proof is based on an anisotropic Lagrangian deformation and a short-time flow expansion. In the $C^m$, $m\ge 2$ case, we introduce a flow decoupling method which allows to tame the nonlinear flow almost as a passive transport. The proofs also cover illposedness in Lipschitz spaces $C^{m-1,1}$ whenever $m\ge 1$ is an integer.

A Blow-Up Result for Dyadic Models of the Euler Equations

We partially answer a question raised by Kiselev and Zlatos in \cite{MR2180809}; in the generalized dyadic model of the Euler equation, a blow-up of $H^{1/3+δ}$-norm occurs. We recover a few previous blow-up results for various related dyadic models as corollaries.

Mode coupling in spin torque oscillators

A number of recent experimental works have shown that the dynamics of a single spin torque oscillator can exhibit complex behavior that stems from interactions between two or more modes of the oscillator. Examples are observed mode-hopping or mode coexistence. There has been some intial work indicating how the theory for a single-mode (macro-spin) spin torque oscillator should be generalized to include several modes and the interactions between them. In the present work, we derive such a theory starting with the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation for magnetization dynamics. We compare our results with the single-mode theory, and show how it is a natural extension of that theory to include mode interactions.
