The Cauchy problem for the two dimensional Euler-Poisson system

The Euler-Poisson system is a fundamental two-fluid model to describe the dynamics of the plasma consisting of compressible electrons and a uniform ion background. In the 3D case Guo first constructed a global smooth irrotational solution by using dispersive Klein-Gordon effect. It has been conjectured that same results should hold in the two-dimensional case. In our recent work, we proved the existence of a family of smooth solutions by constructing the wave operators for the 2D system. In this work we completely settle the 2D Cauchy problem.

Fast-moving finite and infinite trains of solitons for nonlinear Schrödinger equations

We study *infinite soliton trains* solutions of nonlinear Schrödinger equations (NLS), i.e. solutions behaving at large time as the sum of infinitely many solitary waves. Assuming the composing solitons have sufficiently large relative speeds, we prove the existence and uniqueness of such a soliton train. We also give a new construction of multi-solitons (i.e. finite trains) and prove uniqueness in an exponentially small neighborhood, and we consider the case of solutions composed of several solitons and kinks (i.e. solutions with a non-zero background at infinity).

Strong Ill-posedness of the incompressible Euler equation in borderline Sobolev spaces

For the $d$-dimensional incompressible Euler equation, the standard energy method gives local wellposedness for initial velocity in Sobolev space $H^s(\mathbb R^d)$, $s>s_c:=d/2+1$. The borderline case $s=s_c$ was a folklore open problem. In this paper we consider the physical dimensions $d=2,3$ and show that if we perturb any given smooth initial data in $H^{s_c}$ norm, then the corresponding solution can have infinite $H^{s_c}$ norm instantaneously at $t>0$. The constructed solutions are unique and even $C^{\infty}$-smooth in some cases. To prove these results we introduce a new strategy: large Lagrangian deformation induces critical norm inflation. As an application we also settle several closely related open problems.

The phase sensitivity of an SU(1,1) interferometer with homodyne detection

We theoretically study the phase sensitivity of the SU(1,1) interferometer with a coherent light together with a squeezed vacuum input case using the method of homodyne. We find that the homodyne detection has better sensitivity than the intensity detection under this input case. For a certain intensity of coherent light (squeezed light) input, the relative phase sensitivity is not always better with increasing the squeezed strength (coherent light strength). The phase sensitivity can reach the Heisenberg limit only under a certain moderate parameter interval, which can be realized with current experiment ability.

Temporal decorrelations in compressible isotropic turbulence

Temporal decorrelations in compressible isotropic turbulence are studied using the space-time correlation theory and direct numerical simulation. A swept-wave model is developed for dilatational components while the classic random sweeping model is proposed for solenoidal components. The swept-wave model shows that the temporal decorrelations in dilatational fluctuations are dominated by two physical processes: random sweeping and wave propagation. These models are supported by the direct numerical simulation of compressible isotropic turbulence, in the sense of that all curves of normalized time correlations for different wavenumbers collapse into a single one using the normalized time separations. The swept-wave model is further extended to account for a constant mean velocity.

On the Euler-Poincaré equation with non-zero dispersion

We consider the Euler-Poincaré equation on $\mathbb R^d$, $d\ge 2$. For a large class of smooth initial data we prove that the corresponding solution blows up in finite time. This settles an open problem raised by Chae and Liu \cite{Chae Liu}. Our analysis exhibits some new concentration mechanism and hidden monotonicity formula associated with the Euler-Poincaré flow. In particular we show the abundance of blowups emanating from smooth initial data with certain sign properties. No size restrictions are imposed on the data. We also showcase a class of initial data for which the corresponding solution exists globally in time.

On a frequency localized Bernstein inequality and some generalized Poincare-type inequalities

We consider a frequency localized Bernstein inequality for the fractional Laplacian operator which has wide applications in fluid dynamics such as dissipative surface quasi-geostrophic equations. We use a heat flow reformulation and prove the inequality for the full range of parameters and in all dimensions. A crucial observation is that after frequency projection the zero frequency part of the Lévy semigroup does not participate in the inequality and therefore can be freely adjusted. Our proof is based on this idea and a careful perturbation of the Lévy semigroup near the zero frequency which preserves the positivity and improves the time decay. Several alternative proofs (with weaker results) are also included. As an application we also give new proofs of some generalized Poincare type inequalities.

Remarks of Global Wellposedness of Liquid Crystal Flows and Heat Flows of Harmonic Maps in Two Dimensions

We consider the Cauchy problem to the two-dimensional incompressible liquid crystal equation and the heat flows of harmonic maps equation. Under a natural geometric angle condition, we give a new proof of the global well-posedness of smooth solutions for a class of large initial data in energy space. This result was originally obtained by Ding-Lin in \cite{DingLin} and Lin-Lin-Wang in \cite{LinLinWang}. Our main technical tool is a rigidity theorem which gives the coercivity of the harmonic energy under certain angle condition. Our proof is based on a frequency localization argument combined with the concentration-compactness approach which can be of independent interest.

On a generalized maximum principle for a transport-diffusion model with $\log$-modulated fractional dissipation

We consider a transport-diffusion equation of the form $\partial_t θ+v \cdot \nabla θ+ ν\A θ=0$, where $v$ is a given time-dependent vector field on $\mathbb R^d$. The operator $\A$ represents log-modulated fractional dissipation: $\A=\frac {|\nabla|^γ}{\log^β(λ+|\nabla|)}$ and the parameters $ν\ge 0$, $β\ge 0$, $0\le γ\le 2$, $λ>1$. We introduce a novel nonlocal decomposition of the operator $\A$ in terms of a weighted integral of the usual fractional operators $|\nabla|^{s}$, $0\le s \le γ$ plus a smooth remainder term which corresponds to an $L^1$ kernel. For a general vector field $v$ (possibly non-divergence-free) we prove a generalized $L^\infty$ maximum principle of the form $ |θ(t)|_\infty \le e^{Ct} |θ_0|_{\infty}$ where the constant $C=C(ν,β,γ)>0$. In the case $\text{div}(v)=0$ the same inequality holds for $|θ(t)|_p$ with $1\le p \le \infty$. At the cost of an exponential factor, this extends a recent result of Hmidi (2011) to the full regime $d\ge 1$, $0\le γ\le 2$ and removes the incompressibility assumption in the $L^\infty$ case.

On some Liouville Type Theorems for the Compressible Navier-Stokes Equations

We prove several Liouville type results for stationary solutions of the $d$-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations. In particular, we show that when the dimension $d \geqslant 4$, the natural requirements $ρ\in L^{\infty} (\mathbbm{R}^d)$, $v \in \dot{H}^1 (\mathbbm{R}^d)$ suffice to guarantee that the solution is trivial. For dimensions $d=2,3$, we assume the extra condition $v \in L^{\frac{3d}{d-1}}(\mathbb R^d)$. This improves a recent result of Chae (2012).

On a one-dimensional α-patch model with nonlocal drift and fractional dissipation

We consider a one-dimensional nonlocal nonlinear equation of the form: $\partial_t u = (Λ^{-α} u)\partial_x u - νΛ^βu$ where $Λ=(-\partial_{xx})^{\frac 12}$ is the fractional Laplacian and $ν\ge 0$ is the viscosity coefficient. We consider primarily the regime $0<α<1$ and $0\le β\le 2$ for which the model has nonlocal drift, fractional dissipation, and captures essential features of the 2D $α$-patch models. In the critical and subcritical range $1-α\le β\le 2$, we prove global wellposedness for arbitrarily large initial data in Sobolev spaces. In the full supercritical range $0 \le β<1-α$, we prove formation of singularities in finite time for a class of smooth initial data. Our proof is based on a novel nonlocal weighted inequality which can be of independent interest.

On moving-average models with feedback

Moving average models, linear or nonlinear, are characterized by their short memory. This paper shows that, in the presence of feedback in the dynamics, the above characteristic can disappear.

Smooth global solutions for the two dimensional Euler Poisson system

The Euler-Poisson system is a fundamental two-fluid model to describe the dynamics of the plasma consisting of compressible electrons and a uniform ion background. By using the dispersive Klein-Gordon effect, Guo \cite{Guo98} first constructed a global smooth irrotational solution in the three dimensional case. It has been conjectured that same results should hold in the two-dimensional case. The main difficulty in 2D comes from the slow dispersion of the linear flow and certain nonlocal resonant obstructions in the nonlinearity. In this paper we develop a new method to overcome these difficulties and construct smooth global solutions for the 2D Euler-Poisson system.

Global well-posedness and scattering for defocusing energy-critical NLS in the exterior of balls with radial data

We consider the defocusing energy-critical NLS in the exterior of the unit ball in three dimensions. For the initial value problem with Dirichlet boundary condition we prove global well-posedness and scattering with large radial initial data in the Sobolev space $\dot H_0^1$. We also point out that the same strategy can be used to treat the energy-supercritical NLS in the exterior of balls with Dirichlet boundary condition and radial $\dot H_0^1$ initial data.

Modeling branching effects on source-sink relationships of the cotton plant

Compared with classical process-based models, the functional-structural plant models provide more efficient tools to explore the impact of changes in plant structures on plant functioning. In this paper we investigated the effects of branches on the sourcesink interaction for the cotton plant (Gossypium hirsutum L.) based on a two-treatment experiment conducted on cotton grown in the field: the singlestem plants and the plants with only two vegetative branches. It was observed that the branched cotton had more organs for the whole plant but the organs on the trunk were smaller than those on the single-stem cotton. The phytomer production of the branches was four or five growth cycles delayed compared with the main stem. The organs on the trunk had similar dynamics of expansion for both treatments. Effects of branches were evaluated by using the functionalstructural model GREENLAB. It allowed estimating the coefficients of sink strength to differentiate the biomass acquisition abilities of organs between different physiological ages. We found that the presence of the two vegetative branches increased the ground projection area of plant leaves and had led to slight changes on the directly measured parameters; the potential relative sink strengths of organs were found similar for the two treatments.

Stability and Unconditional Uniqueness of Solutions for Energy Critical Wave Equations in High Dimensions

In this paper we establish a complete local theory for the energy-critical nonlinear wave equation (NLW) in high dimensions ${\mathbb R} \times {\mathbb R}^d$ with $d \geq 6$. We prove the stability of solutions under the weak condition that the perturbation of the linear flow is small in certain space-time norms. As a by-product of our stability analysis, we also prove local well-posedness of solutions for which we only assume the smallness of the linear evolution. These results provide essential technical tools that can be applied towards obtaining the extension to high dimensions of the analysis of Kenig and Merle \cite{keme06} of the dynamics of the focusing (NLW) below the energy threshold. By employing refined paraproduct estimates we also prove unconditional uniqueness of solutions for $d\ge 5$ in the natural energy class. This extends an earlier result by Furioli, Planchon and Terraneo \cite{FPT03} in dimension $d=4$.
