Superconducting fluctuations in overdoped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$

Fluctuating superconductivity - vestigial Cooper pairing in the resistive state of a material - is usually associated with low dimensionality, strong disorder or low carrier density. Here, we report single particle spectroscopic, thermodynamic and magnetic evidence for persistent superconducting fluctuations in heavily hole-doped cuprate superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ ($T_c$ = 66~K) despite the high carrier density. With a sign-problem free quantum Monte Carlo calculation, we show how a partially flat band at ($π$,0) can help enhance superconducting phase fluctuations. Finally, we discuss the implications of an anisotropic band structure on the phase-coherence-limited superconductivity in overdoped cuprates and other superconductors.

Observation of Kondo hybridization with an orbital-selective Mott phase in 4d Ca2-xSrxRuO4

The heavy fermion state with Kondo-hybridization (KH), usually manifested in f-electron systems with lanthanide or actinide elements, was recently discovered in several 3d transition metal compounds without f-electrons. However, KH has not yet been observed in 4d/5d transition metal compounds, since more extended 4d/5d orbitals do not usually form flat bands that supply localized electrons appropriate for Kondo pairing. Here, we report a doping- and temperature-dependent angle-resolved photoemission study on 4d Ca2-xSrxRuO4, which shows the signature of KH. We observed a spectral weight transfer in the γ-band, reminiscent of an orbital-selective Mott phase (OSMP). The Mott localized γ-band induces KH with the itinerant \b{eta}-band, resulting in spectral weight suppression around the Fermi level. Our work is the first to demonstrate the evolution of the OSMP with possible KH among 4d electrons, and thereby expands the material boundary of Kondo physics to 4d multi-orbital systems.

Multi-orbital charge density wave excitations and concomitant phonon anomalies in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$LaCuO$_{6+δ}$

Charge density waves (CDWs) are ubiquitous in under-doped cuprate superconductors. As a modulation of the valence electron density, CDWs in hole-doped cuprates possess both Cu-3d and O-2p orbital character owing to the strong hybridization of these orbitals near the Fermi level. Here, we investigate under-doped Bi$_2$Sr$_{1.4}$La$_{0.6}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ using resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) and find that a short-range CDW exists at both Cu and O sublattices in the copper-oxide (CuO2) planes with a comparable periodicity and correlation length. Furthermore, we uncover bond-stretching and bond-buckling phonon anomalies concomitant to the CDWs. Comparing to slightly over-doped Bi$_2$Sr$_{1.8}$La$_{0.2}$CuO$_{6+δ}$, where neither CDWs nor phonon anomalies appear, we highlight that a sharp intensity anomaly is induced in the proximity of the CDW wavevector (QCDW) for the bond-buckling phonon, in concert with the diffused intensity enhancement of the bond-stretching phonon at wavevectors much greater than QCDW. Our results provide a comprehensive picture of the quasi-static CDWs, their dispersive excitations, and associated electron-phonon anomalies, which are key for understanding the competing electronic instabilities in cuprates.

Light-induced nonequilibrium response of the superconducting cuprate La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_4$

We report the dynamics of the cuprate superconductor La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_4$ ($x = 0.14$) after intense photoexcitation utilizing near-infrared (800 nm) optical pump-terahertz probe spectroscopy. In the superconducting state at 5 K, we observed a redshift of the Josephson plasma resonance that sustains for hundreds of picoseconds after the photoexcitation, indicating the destruction of the $c$-axis superconducting coherence. We show that the metastable spectral features can be described by the photoinduced surface heating of the sample. We also demonstrate that the conventional analysis used to extract the spectra of the photoexcited surface region can give rise to artifacts in the nonequilibrium response.

Rapid change of superconductivity and electron-phonon coupling through 19% doping in Bi2212

Electron-boson coupling plays a key role in superconductivity for many systems. However, in copper-based high-temperature ($T_c$) superconductors, its relation to superconductivity remains controversial despite strong spectroscopic fingerprints. Here we use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to find a striking correlation between the superconducting gap and the bosonic coupling strength near the Brillouin zone boundary in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$. The bosonic coupling strength rapidly increases from the overdoped Fermi-liquid regime to the optimally doped strange metal, concomitant with the quadrupled superconducting gap and the doubled gap-to-Tc ratio across the pseudogap boundary. This synchronized lattice and electronic response suggests that the effects of electronic interaction and the electron-phonon coupling become intimately entangled upon entering the strange metal regime, which may in turn drive a stronger superconductivity.

Persistent low-energy phonon broadening near the charge order $q$-vector in bilayer cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$

We report a persistent low-energy phonon broadening around $q_{B} \sim 0.28$ r.l.u. along the Cu-O bond direction in the high-$T_c$ cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi-2212). We show that such broadening exists both inside and outside the conventional charge density wave (CDW) phase, via temperature dependent measurements in both underdoped and heavily overdoped samples. Combining inelastic hard x-ray scattering, diffuse scattering, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and resonant soft x-ray scattering at the Cu $L_3$-edge, we exclude the presence of a CDW in the heavily overdoped Bi-2212 similar to that observed in the underdoped systems. Finally, we discuss the origin of such anisotropic low-energy phonon broadening, and its potential precursory role to the CDW phase in the underdoped region.

Light-induced switching to a Metastable Phase in a Layered Superconductor La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (x=0.15)

We investigated transient optical responses in an optimally-doped high-Tc superconductor La2-xSrxCuO4 (x=0.15) by using 800-nm optical pump and terahertz probe spectroscopy. With increasing the photoexcitation intensities, the Josephson plasma resonance shows a gradual redshift, indicating the suppression of superconductivity by the photoexcitation. With further increasing the photoexcitation intensities, a new longitudinal mode in the loss function spectrum appears and grows from the high energy side, accompanied by a new transverse mode as manifested in the conductivity spectrum. The observed spectra are described by the multilayer model with alternating interlayer Josephson couplings. The new longitudinal and transverse modes sustain much longer than several hundred picoseconds after the photoexcitation, indicating that the new metastable phase with possessing alternating interlayer Josephson couplings is induced by the strong photoexcitation.

$d_{xz/yz}$ Orbital Subband Structures and Chiral Orbital Angular Momentum in the (001) Surface States of SrTiO$_3$

We have performed angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments on the surface states of SrTiO$_3$(001) using linearly and circularly polarized light to investigate the subband structures of out-of-plane $d_{xz/yz}$ orbitals and chiral orbital angular momentum (OAM). The data taken in the first Brillouin zone reveal new subbands for $d_{xz/yz}$ orbitals with Fermi wave vectors of 0.25 and 0.45 $\mathrmÅ^{-1}$ in addition to the previously reported ones. As a result, there are at least two subbands for all the Ti 3d t$_{2g}$ orbitals. Our circular dichroism ARPES data is suggestive of a chiral OAM structure in the surface states and may provide clues to the origin of the linear Rashba-like surface band splitting.

Doping-dependent critical current properties in K, Co, and P-doped BaFe2As2 single crystals

In order to establish the doping dependence of the critical current properties in the iron-based superconductors, the in-plane critical current density (Jc) of BaFe2As2-based superconductors, Ba1-xKxFe2As2 (K-Ba122), Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 (Co-Ba122), and BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 (P-Ba122) in a wide range of doping concentration (x) was investigated by means of magnetization hysteresis loop (MHL) measurements on single-crystal samples. Depending on the dopant elements and their concentration, Jc exhibits a variety of magnetic-field (H) and temperature (T) dependences. (1) In the case of K-Ba122, MHL of the underdoped samples (x < 0.33) exhibits the second magnetization peak (SMP), which sustains high Jc at high H and high T, exceeding 10^5 A/cm2 at T = 25 K and H = 6 T for x = 0.30. On the other hand, SMP is missing in the optimally (x ~ 0.36-0.40) and overdoped (x ~ 0.50) samples, and consequently Jc rapidly decreases by more than one order of magnitude, although the change in Tc is within a few K. (2) For Co-Ba122, SMP is always present over the entire superconducting (SC) dome from the under (x ~ 0.05) to the overdoped (x ~ 0.12) region. However, the magnitude of Jc significantly changes with x, exhibiting a sharp maximum at x ~ 0.057, which is a slightly underdoped composition for Co-Ba122. (3) For P-Ba122, the highest Jc is attained at x = 0.30 corresponding to the highest Tc composition. For the overdoped samples, MHL is characterized by SMP located close to the irreversibility field. Common to the three doping variations, Jc becomes highest at the under-doping side of SC dome near the phase boundary between SC phase and the antiferromagnetic/orthorhombic phase. Also, the peak appears in a narrow range of doping, distinct from the Tc dome with broad maximum. These similarities in the three cases indicate that the observed doping dependence of Jc is intrinsic to the BaFe2As2-based superconductors.
