Proof of the Honeycomb Asymptotics for Optimal Cheeger Clusters

We prove that, in the limit as $k \to+ \infty$, the hexagonal honeycomb solves the optimal partition problem in which the criterion is minimizing the largest among the Cheeger constants of $k$ mutually disjoint cells in a planar domain. As a by-product, the same result holds true when the Cheeger constant is replaced by the first Robin eigenvalue of the Laplacian.

Phase field approach to optimal packing problems and related Cheeger clusters

In a fixed domain of $\Bbb{R}^N$ we study the asymptotic behaviour of optimal clusters associated to $α$-Cheeger constants and natural energies like the sum or maximum: we prove that, as the parameter $α$ converges to the "critical" value $\Big (\frac{N-1}{N}\Big ) _+$, optimal Cheeger clusters converge to solutions of different packing problems for balls, depending on the energy under consideration. As well, we propose an efficient phase field approach based on a multiphase Gamma convergence result of Modica-Mortola type, in order to compute $α$-Cheeger constants, optimal clusters and, as a consequence of the asymptotic result, optimal packings. Numerical experiments are carried over in two and three space dimensions.

On the honeycomb conjecture for a class of minimal convex partitions

We prove that the planar hexagonal honeycomb is asymptotically optimal for a large class of optimal partition problems, in which the cells are assumed to be convex, and the criterion is to minimize either the sum or the maximum among the energies of the cells, the cost being a shape functional $F$ which satisfies a few assumptions. They are: monotonicity under inclusions; homogeneity under dilations; a Faber-Krahn inequality for convex hexagons; a convexity-type inequality for the map which associates with every $n \in \mathbb{N}$ the minimizers of $F$ among convex $n$-gons with given area. In particular, our result allows to obtain the honeycomb conjecture for the Cheeger constant and for the logarithmic capacity (still assuming the cells to be convex). Moreover we show that, in order to get the conjecture also for the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of the Laplacian, it is sufficient to establish some facts about the behaviour of $λ_1$ among convex pentagons, hexagons, and heptagons with prescribed area.

Maximising Neumann eigenvalues on rectangles

We obtain results for the spectral optimisation of Neumann eigenvalues on rectangles in $\mathbb{R}^2$ with a measure or perimeter constraint. We show that the rectangle with measure $1$ which maximises the $k$'th Neumann eigenvalue converges to the unit square in the Hausdorff metric as $k\rightarrow \infty$. Furthermore, we determine the unique maximiser of the $k$'th Neumann eigenvalue on a rectangle with given perimeter.

Symmetry breaking for a problem in optimal insulation

We consider the problem of optimally insulating a given domain $Ω$ of ${\mathbb{R}}^d$; this amounts to solve a nonlinear variational problem, where the optimal thickness of the insulator is obtained as the boundary trace of the solution. We deal with two different criteria of optimization: the first one consists in the minimization of the total energy of the system, while the second one involves the first eigenvalue of the related differential operator. Surprisingly, the second optimization problem presents a symmetry breaking in the sense that for a ball the optimal thickness is nonsymmetric when the total amount of insulator is small enough. In the last section we discuss the shape optimization problem which is obtained letting $Ω$ to vary too.

A new isoperimetric inequality for the elasticae

For a smooth curve $γ$, we define its elastic energy as $E(γ)= \frac 12 \int_γ k^2 (s) ds$ where $k(s)$ is the curvature. The main purpose of the paper is to prove that among all smooth, simply connected, bounded open sets of prescribed area in $\mathbb{R}^2$, the disc has the boundary with the least elastic energy. In other words, for any bounded simply connected domain $Ω$, the following isoperimetric inequality holds: $E^2(\partial Ω)A(Ω)\geq π^3$. The analysis relies on the minimization of the elastic energy of drops enclosing a prescribed area, for which we give as well an analytic answer.

A surgery result for the spectrum of the Dirichlet Laplacian

In this paper we give a method to geometrically modify an open set such that the first $k$ eigenvalues of the Dirichlet Laplacian and its perimeter are not increasing, its measure remains constant, and both perimeter and diameter decrease below a certain threshold. The key point of the analysis relies on the properties of the shape subsolutions for the torsion energy.

Lipschitz regularity of the eigenfunctions on optimal domains

We study the optimal sets $Ω^\ast\subset\mathbb{R}^d$ for spectral functionals $F\big(λ_1(Ω),\dots,λ_p(Ω)\big)$, which are bi-Lipschitz with respect to each of the eigenvalues $λ_1(Ω),\dots,λ_p(Ω)$ of the Dirichlet Laplacian on $Ω$, a prototype being the problem $$ \min{\big\{λ_1(Ω)+\dots+ λ_p(Ω)\;:\;Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^d,\ |Ω|=1\big\}}. $$ We prove the Lipschitz regularity of the eigenfunctions $u_1,\dots,u_p$ of the Dirichlet Laplacian on the optimal set $Ω^*$ and, as a corollary, we deduce that $Ω^*$ is open. For functionals depending only on a generic subset of the spectrum, as for example $λ_k(Ω)$ or $λ_{k_1}(Ω)+\dots+λ_{k_p}(Ω)$, our result proves only the existence of a Lipschitz continuous eigenfunction in correspondence to each of the eigenvalues involved.

Multiphase shape optimization problems

This paper is devoted to the analysis of multiphase shape optimization problems, which can formally be written as $\min\Big\{{g}(F_1(Ω_1),\dots,F_h(Ω_h))+ m\vert\,\bigcup_{i=1}^hΩ_i\vert :\ Ω_i\subset D,\ Ω_i\cap Ω_j =\emptyset\Big\},$ where $D\subset\mathcal{R}^d$ is a given bounded open set, $\vertΩ_i\vert$ is the Lebesgue measure of $Ω_i$ and $m$ is a positive constant. For a large class of such functionals, we analyse qualitative properties of the cells $Ω_i$ and the interaction between them. Each cell is itself subsolution for a (single phase) shape optimization problem, from which we deduce properties like finite perimeter, inner density, separation by open sets, absence of triple junction points, etc. As main examples we consider functionals involving the eigenvalues of the Dirichlet Laplacian of each cell, i.e. $F_i=λ_{k_i}$.

Spectral optimization problems for potentials and measures

In the present paper we consider spectral optimization problems involving the Schrödinger operator $-Δ+μ$ on $\R^d$, the prototype being the minimization of the $k$ the eigenvalue $λ_k(μ)$. Here $μ$ may be a capacitary measure with prescribed torsional rigidity (like in the Kohler-Jobin problem) or a classical nonnegative potential $V$ which satisfies the integral constraint $\ds \int V^{-p}dx \le m$ with $0<p<1$. We prove the existence of global solutions in $\R^d$ and that the optimal potentials or measures are equal to $+\infty$ outside a compact set.

Shape flows for spectral optimization problems

We consider a general formulation of gradient flow evolution for problems whose natural framework is the one of metric spaces. The applications we deal with are concerned with the evolution of {\it capacitary measures} with respect to the $γ$-convergence dissipation distance and with the evolution of domains in spectral optimization problems.

Shape Optimization Problems with Internal Constraint

We consider shape optimization problems with internal inclusion constraints, of the form $$\min\big\{J(Ω)\ :\ \Dr\subsetΩ\subset\R^d,\ |Ω|=m\big\},$$ where the set $\Dr$ is fixed, possibly unbounded, and $J$ depends on $Ω$ via the spectrum of the Dirichlet Laplacian. We analyze the existence of a solution and its qualitative properties, and rise some open questions.

Optimal convex shapes for concave functionals

Motivated by a long-standing conjecture of Polya and Szegö about the Newtonian capacity of convex bodies, we discuss the role of concavity inequalities in shape optimization, and we provide several counterexamples to the Blaschke-concavity of variational functionals, including capacity. We then introduce a new algebraic structure on convex bodies, which allows to obtain global concavity and indecomposability results, and we discuss their application to isoperimetriclike inequalities. As a byproduct of this approach we also obtain a quantitative version of the Kneser-Süss inequality. Finally, for a large class of functionals involving Dirichlet energies and the surface measure, we perform a local analysis of strictly convex portions of the boundary via second order shape derivatives. This allows in particular to exclude the presence of smooth regions with positive Gauss curvature in an optimal shape for Polya-Szegö problem.

Minimization of $λ_2(Ω)$ with a perimeter constraint

We study the problem of minimizing the second Dirichlet eigenvalue for the Laplacian operator among sets of given perimeter. In two dimensions, we prove that the optimum exists, is convex, regular, and its boundary contains exactly two points where the curvature vanishes. In $N$ dimensions, we prove a more general existence theorem for a class of functionals which is decreasing with respect to set inclusion and $γ$ lower semicontinuous.
