Spectral properties of the Landau gauge Faddeev-Popov operator in lattice gluodynamics

Recently we reported on the infrared behavior of the Landau gauge gluon and ghost dressing functions in SU(3) Wilson lattice gluodynamics with special emphasis on the Gribov problem. Here we add an investigation of the spectral properties of the Faddeev-Popov operator at $β$=5.8 and 6.2 for lattice sizes 12^4, 16^4 and 24^4. The larger the volume the more of its eigenvalues are found accumulated close to zero. Using the eigenmodes for the spectral representation it turns out that for our smallest lattice O(200) eigenmodes are sufficient to saturate the ghost propagator at lowest momentum. We associate exceptionally large values of the ghost propagator to extraordinary contributions of low-lying eigenmodes.

Probing the chiral phase transition of N_f=2 clover fermions with valence overlap fermions

Overlap fermions are a powerful tool for investigating the chiral and topological structure of the vacuum and the thermal states of QCD. We study various chiral and topological aspects of the finite temperature phase transition of N_f=2 flavours of O(a) improved Wilson fermions, using valence overlap fermions as a probe. Particular emphasis is placed upon the analysis of the spectral density and the localisation properties of the eigenmodes as well as on the local structure of topological charge fluctuations in the vicinity of the chiral phase transition. The calculations are done on 16^3x8 lattices generated by the DIK collaboration.

Localization properties of the topological charge density and the low lying eigenmodes of overlap fermions

Overlap fermions, which preserve exact chiral symmetry on the lattice, provide a powerful tool for investigating the topological structure of the vacuum. Applying this formulation to zero-temperature quenched SU(3) configurations generated by means of the Luescher-Weisz action, we define the topological charge density with and without UV filtering and study its properties by looking at the density profile and the two-point correlation function. We observe that the density possesses global sign coherent structures, which get increasingly tangled as more and more modes are included. This change of the structure is also detected by the increasing negative tail of the two-point function. We also study the inverse participation ratio of the eigenmodes and discuss their dimensionality.

An Abelian two-Higgs model and high temperature superconductivity

We study a three dimensional Abelian Higgs model containing singly- and doubly-charged scalar fields coupled to a compact Abelian gauge field in the London limit. The model attracts interest because of its relevance to high-Tc superconductors with charge 1 holon and charge 2 spinon-pair fields. It contains two types of vortices carrying magnetic flux and one type of instanton-like monopoles. Using thermodynamic and topological observables we present the phase diagram in the parameter space of the gauge and holon and spinon-pair couplings. The Fermi liquid, the spin gap, the superconductor and the strange metallic phases have been identified in a wide region of parameters. The model may serve as a toy system modelling non-perturbative properties of the Yang-Mills theory.

Studying the infrared region in Landau gauge QCD

We report on the progress we made in studying the infrared behavior of the ghost and gluon dressing functions in Landau gauge. Related to this we also investigate a running coupling given in terms of those functions and compare our results to those coming from the Dyson-Schwinger approach. We present first numerical results for the SU(3) ghost-ghost-gluon vertex renormalization constant. In addition the spectrum of low-lying eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Faddeev-Popov operator is determined. The saturation of the ghost propagator in terms of those eigenvalues and eigenmodes is discussed at lower momenta.

Universality check of Abelian Monopoles

We study the Abelian projected SU(2) lattice gauge theory after gauge fixing to the maximally Abelian gauge (MAG). In order to check the universality of the Abelian dominance we employ the tadpole improved tree level (TI) action. We show that the density of monopoles in the largest cluster (the IR component) is finite in the continuum limit which is approximated already at relatively large lattice spacing. The value itself is smaller than in the case of Wilson action. We present results for the ratio of the Abelian to non-Abelian string tension for both Wilson and TI actions for a number of lattice spacings in the range 0.06 fm < a < 0.35 fm. These results show that the ratio is between 0.9 and 0.95 for all considered values of lattice couplings and both actions. We compare the properties of the monopole clusters in two gauges - in MAG and in the Laplacian Abelian gauge (LAG). Whereas in MAG the infrared component of the monopole density shows a good convergence to the continuum limit, we find that in LAG it is even not clear whether a finite limit exists.

Towards the infrared limit in SU(3) Landau gauge lattice gluodynamics

We study the behavior of the gluon and ghost dressing functions in SU(3) Landau gauge at low momenta available on lattice sizes 12^4-32^4 at $β$=5.8, 6.0 and 6.2. We demonstrate the ghost dressing function to be systematically dependent on the choice of Gribov copies, while the influence on the gluon dressing function is not resolvable. The running coupling given in terms of these functions is found to be decreasing for momenta q<0.6 GeV. We study also effects of the finite volume and of the lattice discretization.

Calorons in SU(3) lattice gauge theory

We examine the semiclassical content of SU(3) Yang Mills theory on the lattice at finite temperature. Employing the cooling method, a set of classical fields is generated from a Monte Carlo ensemble. Various operators are used to inspect this set with respect to topological properties. We find pseudoparticle fields, so-called caloron solutions, possessing the remarkable features of (superpositions of) Kraan-van Baal solutions, i.e. extensions of Harrington-Shepard calorons to generic values of the holonomy.

The compact Q=2 Abelian Higgs model in the London limit: vortex-monopole chains and the photon propagator

The confining and topological properties of the compact Abelian Higgs model with doubly-charged Higgs field in three space-time dimensions are studied. We consider the London limit of the model. We show that the monopoles are forming chain-like structures (kept together by ANO vortices) the presence of which is essential for getting simultaneously permanent confinement of singly-charged particles and breaking of the string spanned between doubly-charged particles. In the confinement phase the chains are forming percolating clusters while in the deconfinement (Higgs) phase the chains are of finite size. The described picture is in close analogy with the synthesis of the Abelian monopole and the center vortex pictures in confining non--Abelian gauge models. The screening properties of the vacuum are studied by means of the photon propagator in the Landau gauge.

The monopole content of topological clusters : have KvB calorons been found?

Using smearing of equilibrium lattice fields generated at finite temperature in the confined phase of SU(2) lattice gauge theory, we have investigated the emerging topological objects (clusters of topological charge). Analysing their monopole content according to the Polyakov gauge and the maximally Abelian gauge, we characterize part of them to correspond to nonstatic calorons or static dyons in the context of Kraan-van Baal caloron solutions with non-trivial holonomy. The behaviour of the Polyakov loop inside these clusters and the (model-dependent) topological charges of these objects support this interpretation.

Monopole Chains in the Compact Abelian Higgs Model with doubly-charged Matter Field

We study the properties of topological defects in the lattice compact Abelian Higgs Model with charge Q=2 matter field. We find that monopoles and antimonopoles form chain-like structures which are dense in the confinement/symmetric phase. In this phase the mentioned structures explain both the confinement of single-charged and the breaking of strings spanned between doubly-charged test particles. This observation helps to understand how the non-diagonal gluons, once taken into consideration in the Abelian projection of gluodynamics, could reproduce in this framework the string breaking for adjoint charges.

The influence of Gribov copies on the gluon and ghost propagator

The dependence of the gluon and ghost propagator in pure SU(3) gauge theory on the choice of Gribov copies in Landau gauge is studied. Simulations were performed on several lattice sizes at $β$=5.8, 6.0 and 6.2. In the infrared region the ghost propagator turns out to depend on the choice, while the impact on the gluon propagator is not resolvable. Also the eigenvalue distribution of the Faddeev-Popov operator is sensitive to Gribov copies.

The gluon and ghost propagator and the influence of Gribov copies

The dependence of the Landau gauge gluon and ghost propagators on the choice of Gribov copies is studied in pure SU(3) lattice gauge theory. Whereas the influence on the gluon propagator is small, the ghost propagator becomes clearly affected by the copies in the infrared region. We compare our data with the infrared exponents predicted by the Dyson-Schwinger equation approach

Probing for Instanton Quarks with epsilon-Cooling

We use epsilon-cooling, adjusting at will the order a^2 corrections to the lattice action, to study the parameter space of instantons in the background of non-trivial holonomy and to determine the presence and nature of constituents with fractional topological charge at finite and zero temperature for SU(2). As an additional tool, zero temperature configurations were generated from those at finite temperature with well-separated constituents. This is achieved by "adiabatically" adjusting the anisotropic coupling used to implement finite temperature on a symmetric lattice. The action and topological charge density, as well as the Polyakov loop and chiral zero-modes are used to analyse these configurations. We also show how cooling histories themselves can reveal the presence of constituents with fractional topological charge. We comment on the interpretation of recent fermion zero-mode studies for thermalized ensembles at small temperatures.

Phase Structure and Gauge Boson Propagator in the radially active 3D compact Abelian Higgs Model

Unfreezing the radial degree of freedom, we study the three-dimensional Abelian Higgs model with compact gauge field and fundamentally charged matter. For small quartic Higgs self coupling and finite gauge coupling the model possesses a first order transition from the confined/symmetric phase to the deconfined/Higgs phase separated at some hopping parameter $κ_c$. Latent heat and surface tension are obtained in the first order regime. At larger quartic coupling the first order transition ceases to exist, and the behavior becomes similar to that known from the London limit. These observations are complemented by a study of the photon propagator in Landau gauge in the two different regimes. The problems afflicting the gauge fixing procedure are carefully investigated. We propose an improved gauge fixing algorithm which uses a finite subgroup in a preselection/preconditioning stage. The computational gain in the expensive confinement region is a speed-up factor around 10. The propagator in momentum space has a non-zero anomalous dimension in the confined phase whereas it vanishes in the Higgs phase. As far as the gauge boson propagator is concerned, we find that the radially active Higgs field provides qualitatively no new effect compared to the radially frozen Higgs field studied before.

A numerical reinvestigation of the Aoki phase with N_f=2 Wilson fermions at zero temperature

We report on a numerical reinvestigation of the Aoki phase in lattice QCD with two flavors of Wilson fermions where the parity-flavor symmetry is spontaneously broken. For this purpose an explicitly symmetry-breaking source term $h\barψ i γ_{5} τ^{3}ψ$ was added to the fermion action. The order parameter $<\barψ i γ_{5}τ^{3}ψ>$ was computed with the Hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm at several values of $(β,κ,h)$ on lattices of sizes $4^4$ to $12^4$ and extrapolated to $h=0$. The existence of a parity-flavor breaking phase can be confirmed at $β=4.0$ and 4.3, while we do not find parity-flavor breaking at $β=4.6$ and 5.0.

On the stability of Dirac sheet configurations

Using cooling for SU(2) lattice configurations, purely Abelian constant magnetic field configurations were left over after the annihilation of constituents that formed metastable Q=0 configurations. These so-called Dirac sheet configurations were found to be stable if emerging from the confined phase, close to the deconfinement phase transition, provided their Polyakov loop was sufficiently non-trivial. Here we show how this is related to the notion of marginal stability of the appropriate constant magnetic field configurations. We find a perfect agreement between the analytic prediction for the dependence of stability on the value of the Polyakov loop (the holonomy) in a finite volume and the numerical results studied on a finite lattice in the context of the Dirac sheet configurations.
