Recombination of dyons into calorons in SU(2) lattice fields at low temperatures

By cooling of equilibrium lattice fields at finite temperature in SU(2) gauge theory it has been shown that topological objects (calorons) observed on the lattice in the confined phase possess a dyonic substructure which becomes visible under certain circumstances. Here we show that, with decreasing temperature of the equilibrium ensemble, the distribution in the caloron parameter space is modified such that the calorons appear non-dissociated into constituent dyons. Still the calorons have nontrivial holonomy which is demonstrated by the Polyakov line behaviour for these configurations. At vanishing temperature (on a symmetric lattice) topological lumps obtained by cooling possess rotational symmetry in 4D and a characteristic double peak structure of Polyakov lines (defined with respect to temporal and spatial directions) with non-trivial asymptotics.

On Dirac sheet configurations of SU(2) lattice fields

Finite temperature Euclidean SU(2) lattice gauge fields close to the deconfinement phase transition are subjected to cooling. We find relatively stable or absolutely stable configurations with an action below the one-instanton action $S_{inst}=2π^2$ both in the deconfinement and the confinement phases. In this paper we attempt an interpretation of these lowest action configurations. Their action is purely magnetic and amounts to $S/S_{inst} \approx N_t/N_s$, where $N_t$ ($N_s$) is the timelike (spacelike) lattice size, while the topological charge vanishes. In the confined phase part of the corresponding lattice configurations turns out to be absolutely stable with respect to the cooling process in which case Abelian projection reveals a homogeneous, purely Abelian magnetic field closed over the "boundary" in one of the spatial directions. Referring to the dyonic structure established for the confinement phase near $T_c$ and based on the observation made for this phase that such events below the instanton action $S_{inst}$ emerge from dyon-antidyon annihilation, the question of stability (metastability) is discussed for both phases. The hypothetically different dyonic structure of the deconfinement phase, inaccessible by cooling, could explain the metastability.

On practical problems to compute the ghost propagator in SU(2) lattice gauge theory

In SU(2) lattice pure gauge theory we study numerically the dependence of the ghost propagator G(p) on the choice of Gribov copies in Lorentz (or Landau) gauge. We find that the effect of Gribov copies is essential in the scaling window region, however, it tends to decrease with increasing beta. On the other hand, we find that at larger beta-values very strong fluctuations appear which can make problematic the calculation of the ghost propagator.

The photon propagator in compact QED_{2+1}: the effect of wrapping Dirac strings

We discuss the influence of closed Dirac strings on the photon propagator in the Landau gauge emerging from a study of the compact U(1) gauge model in 2+1 dimensions. This gauge also minimizes the total length of the Dirac strings. Closed Dirac strings are stable against local gauge-fixing algorithms only due to the torus boundary conditions of the lattice. We demonstrate that these left-over Dirac strings are responsible for the previously observed unphysical behavior of the propagator of space-like photons (D_T) in the deconfinement (high temperature) phase. We show how one can monitor the number N_3 of thermal Dirac strings which allows to separate the propagator measurements into N_3 sectors. The propagator in N_3 \neq 0 sectors is characterized by a non--zero mass and an anomalous dimension similarly to the confinement phase. Both mass squared and anomalous dimension are found to be proportional to N_3. Consequently, in the N_3=0 sector the unphysical behavior of the D_T photon propagator is cured and the deviation from the free massless propagator disappears.

A detailed study of the Abelian-projected SU(2) flux tube and its dual Ginzburg-Landau analysis

The color-electric flux tube of Abelian-projected (AP) SU(2) lattice gauge theory in the maximally Abelian gauge (MAG) is revisited. It is shown that the lattice Gribov copy effect in the MAG is crucial for the monopole-related parts of the flux-tube profiles. Taking into account both the gauge fixing procedure and the effect of finite quark-antiquark distance properly, the scaling property of the flux-tube profile is confirmed. The quantitative relation between the measured AP flux tube and the flux-tube solution of the U(1) dual Abelian Higgs (DAH) model is also discussed. The fitting of the AP flux tube in terms of the DAH flux tube indicates that the vacuum can be classified as weakly type-I dual superconductor.

The Aoki phase for N_f=2 Wilson fermions revisited

We report on a numerical reinvestigation of the Aoki phase in full lattice QCD with two flavors of unimproved Wilson fermions. For zero temperature the Aoki phase can be confirmed at inverse coupling $β=4.0$ and $β=4.3$, but not at $β=4.6$ and $β=5.0$. At non-zero temperature the Aoki phase was found to exist also at $β=4.6$.

Duality of gauge field singularities and the structure of the flux tube in Abelian-projected SU(2) gauge theory and the dual Abelian Higgs model

The structure of the flux-tube profile in Abelian-projected (AP) SU(2) gauge theory in the maximally Abelian gauge is studied. The connection between the AP flux tube and the classical flux-tube solution of the U(1) dual Abelian Higgs (DAH) model is clarified in terms of the path-integral duality transformation. This connection suggests that the electric photon and the magnetic monopole parts of the Abelian Wilson loop can act as separate sources creating the Coulombic and the solenoidal electric field inside a flux tube. The conjecture is confirmed by a lattice simulation which shows that the AP flux tube is composed of these two contributions.

Confinement and the photon propagator in 3D compact QED: a lattice study in Landau gauge at zero and finite temperature

On the lattice we study the gauge boson propagator of three dimensional compact QED in Landau gauge at zero and non-zero temperature. The non-perturbative effects are taken into account by the generation of a mass, by an anomalous dimension and by the photon wave function renormalization. All these effects can be attributed to the monopoles: they are absent in the propagator of the singularity-free part of the gauge field. We assess carefully the Gribov copy problem for the propagator and the parameters emerging from the fits.

Confinement, deconfinement and the photon propagator in 3D cQED on the lattice

We report on a lattice study of the gauge boson propagator of 3D compact QED in Landau gauge at zero and finite temperature. Non-perturbative effects are reflected by the generation of a mass m and by an anomalous dimension alpha. These effects can be attributed to monopoles and are absent in the propagator of the regular part of the gauge field.

More on String Breaking in the 3D Abelian Higgs Model: the Photon Propagator

We study the Landau gauge photon propagator in the three--dimensional Abelian Higgs model with compact gauge field and fundamentally charged matter in the London limit. The total gauge field is split into singular and regular parts. On the confinement side of the string breaking crossover the momentum dependence of the total propagator is characterized by an anomalous dimension similarly to 3D compact QED. At the crossover and throughout the Higgs region the anomalous dimension disappears. This result perfectly agrees with recent observations that the monopole--antimonopole plasma leads to nonzero anomalous dimension and the presence of the matter fields causes monopole pairing into dipole bound states. The Yukawa mass characterizing the propagator part from regular gauge fields is non-vanishing at the Higgs side and coincides with the mass found for the total propagator. The regular gauge field without anomalous dimension becomes massless at the crossover and in the confinement region.

String Breaking and Monopoles: a Case Study in the 3D Abelian Higgs Model

We study the breaking of the string spanned between test charges in the three dimensional Abelian Higgs model with compact gauge field and fundamentally charged Higgs field at zero temperature. In agreement with current expectations we demonstrate that string breaking is associated with pairing of monopoles. However, the string breaking is not accompanied by an ordinary phase transition.

A fresh look on the flux tube in Abelian-projected SU(2) gluodynamics

We reconsider the properties of the $Q\bar{Q}$ flux tube within Abelian-projected SU(2) lattice gauge theory in terms of electric field and monopole current. In the maximal Abelian gauge we assess the influence of the Gribov copies on the apparent flux-tube profile. For the optimal gauge fixing we study the independence of the profile on the lattice spacing for $β=$ 2.3, 2.4, and 2.5115 on a $32^4$ lattice. We decompose the Abelian Wilson loop into monopole and photon parts and compare the electric and monopole profile emerging from different sources with the field strength and monopole current within the dual Ginzburg-Landau theory.

Monopoles, confinement and the photon propagator in QED$_3$

We study the lattice gauge boson propagator of 3D compact QED in Landau gauge at zero and non-zero temperature. Non-perturbative effects are reflected by the generation of a mass $m$, by an anomalous dimension $α$ and by the photon wave function renormalisation $Z$. These effects can be attributed to monopoles: they are absent in the propagator of the regular part of the gauge field. The rôle of Gribov copies is carefully investigated.

On the topological content of SU(2) gauge fields below T_c

Finite temperature Euclidean SU(2) lattice gauge fields generated in the confinement phase close to the deconfinement phase transition are subjected to cooling. The aim is to identify long-living, almost-classical local excitations which carry (generically non-integer) topological charge. Two kinds of spatial boundary conditions (fixed holonomy and standard periodic boundary conditions) are applied. For the lowest-action almost-classical configurations we find that their relative probability semi-quantitatively agrees for both types of boundary conditions. We find calorons with unit topological charge as well as (anti-)selfdual lumps (BPS-monopoles or dyons) combined in pairs of non-integer (equal or opposite sign) topological charge. For calorons and separated pairs of equal-sign dyons obtained by cooling we have found that (i) the gluon field is well-described by Kraan-van Baal solutions of the Euclidean Yang-Mills field equations and (ii) the lowest Wilson-fermion modes are well-described by analytic solutions of the corresponding Dirac equation. For metastable configurations found at higher action, the multi-center structure can be interpreted in terms of dyons and antidyons, using the gluonic and fermionic indicators as in the dyon-pair case. Additionally, the Abelian monopole structure and field strength correlators between the centers are useful to analyse the configurations in terms of dyonic constituents. We argue that a semi-classical approximation of the non-zero temperature path integral should be built on superpositions of solutions with non-trivial holonomy.

Photon propagator, monopoles and the thermal phase transition in 3D compact QED

We investigate the gauge boson propagator in three dimensional compact Abelian gauge model in the Landau gauge at finite temperature. The presence of the monopole plasma in the confinement phase leads to appearance of an anomalous dimension in the momentum dependence of the propagator. The anomalous dimension as well as an appropriate ratio of photon wave function renormalization constants with and without monopoles are observed to be order parameters for the deconfinement phase transition. We discuss the relation between our results and the confining properties of the gluon propagator in non--Abelian gauge theories.
