Development of high vorticity in incompressible 3D Euler equations: influence of initial conditions

The incompressible three-dimensional ideal flows develop very thin pancake-like regions of increasing vorticity. These regions evolve with the scaling $ω_{\max}(t)\propto\ell(t)^{-2/3}$ between the vorticity maximum and pancake thickness, and provide the leading contribution to the energy spectrum, where the gradual formation of the Kolmogorov interval $E_{k}\propto k^{-5/3}$ is observed for some initial flows [Agafontsev et. al, Phys. Fluids 27, 085102 (2015)]. With the massive numerical simulations, in the present paper we study the influence of initial conditions on the processes of pancake formation and the Kolmogorov energy spectrum development.

Asymptotic solution for high vorticity regions in incompressible 3D Euler equations

Incompressible 3D Euler equations develop high vorticity in very thin pancake-like regions from generic large-scale initial conditions. In this work we propose an exact solution of the Euler equations for the asymptotic pancake evolution. This solution combines a shear flow aligned with an asymmetric straining flow, and is characterized by a single asymmetry parameter and an arbitrary transversal vorticity profile. The analysis is based on detailed comparison with numerical simulations performed using a pseudo-spectral method in anisotropic grids of up to 972 x 2048 x 4096.

Fermi-Pasta-Ulam recurrence and modulation instability

We give a qualitative explanation of the analog of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) recurrence in a one-dimensional focusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLSE). That recurrence can be considered as a result of the nonlinear development of modulation instability. All known exact localized solitons-type solutions describing propagation on the background of the modulationally unstable condensate show the recurrence to the condensate state after its interaction with solitons. The condensate state locally recovers its original form with the same amplitude but a different phase after soliton leave its initial region. This is the analog of the FPU recurrence for the NLSE. Based on the integrability of the NLSE, we demonstrate that the FPU recurrence takes place not only for condensate but for more general solution in the form of the cnoidal wave. This solution is periodic in space and can be represented as a solitonic lattice. That lattice reduces to isolated soliton solution in the limit of large distance between solitons. The lattice transforms into the condensate in the opposite limit of dense soliton packing. The cnoidal wave is also modulationally unstable due to soliton overlapping. This instability at the linear stage does not provide the cnoidal wave recurrence. The recurrence happens at the nonlinear stage of the modulation instability. From the practical point of view the latter property is very important, especially for the fiber communication systems which use soliton as an information carrier.

Anisotropic characteristics of the Kraichnan direct cascade in two-dimensional hydrodynamic turbulence

Statistical characteristics of the Kraichnan direct cascade for two-dimensional hydrodynamic turbulence are numerically studied (with spatial resolution $8192\times 8192$) in the presence of pumping and viscous-like damping. It is shown that quasi-shocks of vorticity and their Fourier partnerships in the form of jets introduce an essential influence in turbulence leading to strong angular dependencies for correlation functions. The energy distribution as a function of modulus $k$ for each angle in the inertial interval has the Kraichnan behavior, $\sim k^{-4}$, and simultaneously a strong dependence on angles. However, angle average provides with a high accuracy the Kraichnan turbulence spectrum $E_k=C_Kη^{2/3} k^{-3}$ where $η$ is enstrophy flux and the Kraichnan constant $C_K\simeq 1.3$, in correspondence with the previous simulations. Familiar situation takes place for third-order velocity structure function $S_3^L$ which, as for the isotropic turbulence, gives the same scaling with respect to separation length $R$ and $η$, $S_3^L=C_3ηR^3$, but the mean over angles and time $\bar {C_3}$ differs from its isotropic value.

Development of high vorticity structures in incompressible 3D Euler equations

We perform the systematic numerical study of high vorticity structures that develop in the 3D incompressible Euler equations from generic large-scale initial conditions. We observe that a multitude of high vorticity structures appear in the form of thin vorticity sheets (pancakes). Our analysis reveals the self-similarity of the pancakes evolution, which is governed by two different exponents $e^{-t/T_{\ell}}$ and $e^{t/T_ω}$ describing compression in the transverse direction and the vorticity growth respectively, with the universal ratio $T_{\ell}/T_ω \approx 2/3$. We relate development of these structures to the gradual formation of the Kolmogorov energy spectrum $E_{k}\propto\, k^{-5/3}$, which we observe in a fully inviscid system. With the spectral analysis we demonstrate that the energy transfer to small scales is performed through the pancake structures, which accumulate in the Kolmogorov interval of scales and evolve according to the scaling law $ω_{\max} \propto \ell^{-2/3}$ for the local vorticity maximums $ω_{\max}$ and the transverse pancake scales $\ell$.

Steady mirror structures in a plasma with pressure anisotropy

In the first part we present a review of our results concerning the weakly nonlinear regime of the mirror instability in the framework of an asymptotic model. This model belongs to the class of gradient type systems for which the free energy can only decrease in time. It reveals a behavior typical for subcritical bifurcations: below the mirror instability threshold, all localized stationary structures are unstable, while above threshold, the system displays a blow-up behavior. It is shown that taking the electrons into account (non-zero temperature) does not change the structure of the asymptotic model. For bi-Maxwellian distribution functions for both electrons and ions, the model predicts the formation of magnetic holes. The second part contains original results concerning two-dimensional steady mirror structures which can form in the saturated regime. Based on Grad-Shafranov-like equations, a gyrotropic plasma, where the pressures in the static regime are only functions of the amplitude of the local magnetic field, is shown to be amenable to a variational principle with a free energy density given by the parallel tension. This approach is used to demonstrate that small-amplitude static holes constructed slightly below the mirror instability threshold identify with lump solitons of KPII equation and turn out to be unstable. It is also shown that regularizing effects such as finite Larmor radius corrections cannot be ignored in the description of large-amplitude mirror structures. Using the gradient method, which is based on a variational principle for anisotropic MHD taking into account ion finite Larmor radius effects, we found both one-dimensional magnetic structures in the form of stripes and two-dimensional bubbles when the magnetic field component transverse to the plane is increased. These structures realize minimum of the free energy.

Singularity formation on a fluid interface during the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability development

The dynamics of singularity formation on the interface between two ideal fluids is studied for the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability development within the Hamiltonian formalism. It is shown that the equations of motion derived in the small interface angle approximation (gravity and capillary forces are neglected) admit exact solutions in the implicit form. The analysis of these solutions shows that, in the general case, weak root singularities are formed on the interface in a finite time for which the curvature becomes infinite, while the slope angles remain small. For Atwood numbers close to unity in absolute values, the surface curvature has a definite sign correlated with the boundary deformation directed towards the light fluid. For fluids with comparable densities, the curvature changes its sign in a singular point. In the particular case of fluids with equal densities, the obtained results are consistent with those obtained by Moore based on the Birkhoff-Rott equation analysis.

Subcritical mirror structures in an anisotropic plasma

Based on Grad-Shafranov-like equations, a gyrotropic plasma where the pressures in the static regime are only functions of the amplitude of the local magnetic field is shown to be amenable to a variational principle with a free energy density given by the parallel tension. This approach is used to demonstrate that small- amplitude static holes constructed slightly below the mirror instability threshold identify with lump solitons of KPII equation and turn out to be unstable. It is also shown that regularizing effects such as finite Larmor radius corrections cannot be ignored in the description of large-amplitude mirror structures.

Statistical features of freely decaying two-dimensional hydrodynamic turbulence

Statistical characteristics of freely decaying two-dimensional hydrodynamic turbulence at high Reynolds numbers are numerically studied. In particular, numerical experiments (with resolution up to $8192\times 8192$) provide a Kraichnan-type turbulence spectrum $E_k\sim k^{-3}$. By means of spatial filtration, it is found that the main contribution to the spectrum comes from the sharp vorticity gradients in the form of quasi-shocks. Such quasi-singularities are responsible for a strong angular dependence of the spectrum owing to well-localized (in terms of the angle) jets with minor and/or large overlapping. In each jet, the spectrum decreases as $k^{-3}$. The behavior of the third-order structure function accurately agrees with Kraichnan direct cascade concept corresponding to a constant enstrophy flux. It is shown that the power law exponents $ζ_n$ for higher structure functions grow more slowly than the linear dependence of $n$, which testifies to turbulence intermittency.

Nonlinear mirror modes in the presence of hot electrons

A non-perturbative calculation of the gyrotropic pressures associated with large-scale mirror modes is performed, taking into account a finite, possibly anisotropic electron temperature. In the small-amplitude limit, this leads to an extension of an asymptotic model previously derived for cold electrons. A model equation for the profile of subcritical finite-amplitude large-scale structures is also presented.

Collapse of solitary waves near transition from supercritical to subcritical bifurcations

We study both analytically and numerically the nonlinear stage of the instability of one-dimensional solitons in a small vicinity of the transition point from supercritical to subcritical bifurcations in the framework of the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation. It is shown that near the collapsing time the pulse amplitude and its width demonstrate the self-similar behavior with a small asymmetry at the pulse tails due to self-steepening. This theory is applied to both solitary interfacial deep-water waves and envelope water waves with a finite depth and short optical pulses in fibers as well.

Nonlinear theory of mirror instability near threshold

An asymptotic model based on a reductive perturbative expansion of the drift kinetic and the Maxwell equations is used to demonstrate that, near the instability threshold, the nonlinear dynamics of mirror modes in a magnetized plasma with anisotropic ion temperatures involves a subcritical bifurcation, leading to the formation of small-scale structures with amplitudes comparable with the ambient magnetic field.

Deep-water internal solitary waves near critical density ratio

Bifurcations of solitary waves propagating along the interface between two ideal fluids are considered. The study is based on a Hamiltonian approach. It concentrates on values of the density ratio close to a critical one, where the supercritical bifurcation changes to the subcritical one. As the solitary wave velocity approaches the minimum phase velocity of linear interfacial waves (the bifurcation point), the solitary wave solutions transform into envelope solitons. In order to describe their behavior and bifurcations, a generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation describing the behavior of solitons and their bifurcations is derived. In comparison with the classical NLS equation this equation takes into account three additional nonlinear terms: the so-called Lifshitz term responsible for pulse steepening, a nonlocal term analogous to that first found by Dysthe for gravity waves and the six-wave interaction term. We study both analytically and numerically two solitary wave families of this equation for values of the density ratio $ρ$ that are both above and below the critical density ratio $ρ_{cr}$. For $ρ>ρ_{cr}$, the soliton solution can be found explicitly at the bifurcation point. The maximum amplitude of such a soliton is proportional to $\sqrt{ρ-ρ_{cr}}$, and at large distances the soliton amplitude decays algebraically. A stability analysis shows that solitons below the critical ratio are stable in the Lyapunov sense in the wide range of soliton parameters. Above the critical density ratio solitons are shown to be unstable with respect to finite perturbations.

Sharp vorticity gradients in two-dimensional hydrodynamic turbulence

The appearance of sharp vorticity gradients in two-dimensional hydrodynamic turbulence and their influence on the turbulent spectra is considered. We have developed the analog of the vortex line representation as a transformation to the curvilinear system of coordinates moving together with the di-vorticity lines. Compressibility of this mapping can be considered as the main reason for the formation of the vorticity discontinuities at high Reynolds numbers. For two-dimensional turbulence in the case of strong anisotropy the vorticity discontinuities can generate spectra with the fall-off at large $k$ proportional to $k^{-3}$ resembling the Kraichnan spectrum for the enstrophy cascade. For turbulence with weak anisotropy the $k$ dependence of the spectrum due to discontinuities coincides with that of the Saffman spectrum: $k^{-4}$. We have compared the analytical predictions with direct numerical solutions of the two-dimensional Euler equation for decaying turbulence. We observe that the di-vorticity is reaching very high values and is distributed locally in space along piecewise straight lines. Thus, indicating strong anisotropy and accordingly we found a spectrum close to the $k^{-3}$-spectrum.

Compressible dynamics of magnetic field lines for incompressible MHD flows

It is demonstrated that the deformation of magnetic field lines in incompressible magnetohydrodynamic flows results from a compressible mapping. Appearance of zeroes for the mapping Jacobian correspond to the breaking of magnetic field lines, associated with local blowup of the magnetic field. The possibility of such events is found to be unlikely in two dimensions but not in three dimensions.

Vortex line representation for flows of ideal and viscous fluids

It is shown that the Euler hydrodynamics for vortical flows of an ideal fluid coincides with the equations of motion of a charged {\it compressible} fluid moving due to a self-consistent electromagnetic field. Transition to the Lagrangian description in a new hydrodynamics is equivalent for the original Euler equations to the mixed Lagrangian-Eulerian description - the vortex line representation (VLR). Due to compressibility of a "new" fluid the collapse of vortex lines can happen as the result of breaking (or overturning) of vortex lines. It is found that the Navier-Stokes equation in the vortex line representation can be reduced to the equation of the diffusive type for the Cauchy invariant with the diffusion tensor given by the metric of the VLR.

Towards a sufficient criterion for collapse in 3D Euler equations

A sufficient integral criterion for a blow-up solution of the Hopf equations (the Euler equations with zero pressure) is found. This criterion shows that a certain positive integral quantity blows up in a finite time under specific initial conditions. Blow-up of this quantity means that solution of the Hopf equation in 3D can not be continued in the Sobolev space $H^2({\cal R}^3)$ for infinite time.

Numerical evidence of breaking of vortex lines in an ideal fluid

Emergence of singularity of vorticity at a single point, not related to any symmetry of the initial distribution, has been demonstrated numerically for the first time. Behavior of the maximum of vorticity near the point of collapse closely follows the dependence 1/(t0-t), where t0 is the time of collapse. This agrees with the interpretation of collapse in an ideal incompressible fluid as of the process of vortex lines breaking.
