Ultrasonic control of terahertz radiation via lattice anharmonicity in LiNbO3

We propose a novel tunable terahertz (THz) filter using the resonant acousto-optic (RAO) effect. We present a design based on a transverse optical (TO) phonon mediated interaction between a coherent acoustic wave and the THz field in LiNbO3. We predict a continuously tunable range of the filter up to 4 THz via the variation of the acoustic frequency between 0.1 and 1 GHz. The RAO effect in this case is due to cubic and quartic anharmonicities between TO phonons and the acoustic field. The effect of the interference between the anharmonicities is also discussed.

Brillouin-Wigner perturbation theory in open electromagnetic systems

A Brillouin-Wigner perturbation theory is developed for open electromagnetic systems which are characterised by discrete resonant states with complex eigenenergies. Since these states are exponentially growing at large distances, a modified normalisation is introduced that allows a simple spectral representation of the Green's function. The perturbed modes are found by solving a linear eigenvalue problem in matrix form. The method is illustrated on exactly solvable one- and three-dimensional examples being, respectively, a dielectric slab and a microsphere.

Excitation Energy Dependence of the Exciton Inner Ring

We report on the excitation energy dependence of the inner ring in the exciton emission pattern. The contrast of the inner ring is found to decrease with lowering excitation energy. Excitation by light tuned to the direct exciton resonance is found to effectively suppress excitation-induced heating of indirect excitons and facilitate the realization of a cold and dense exciton gas. The excitation energy dependence of the inner ring is explained in terms of exciton transport and cooling.

Direct and indirect excitons in semiconductor coupled quantum wells in an applied electric field

An accurate calculation of the exciton ground and excited states in AlGaAs and InGaAs coupled quantum wells (CQWs) in an external electric field is presented. An efficient and straightforward algorithm of solving the Schrodinger equation in real space has been developed and exciton binding energies, oscillator strengths, lifetimes, and absorption spectra are calculated for applied electric fields up to 100 kV/cm. It is found that in symmetric 8-4-8 nm GaAs/Al(0.33)Ga(0.67)As CQW structure, the ground state of the system switches from direct to indirect exciton at approximately 5 kV/cm with dramatic changes of its binding energy and oscillator strength while the bright excited direct-exciton state remains almost unaffected. It is shown that the excitonic lifetime is dominated either by the radiative recombination or by tunneling processes at small/large values of the electric field, respectively. The calculated lifetime of the exciton ground state as a function of the bias voltage is in a quantitative agreement with low-temperature photoluminescence measurements. We have also made freely available a numerical code for calculation of the optical properties of direct and indirect excitons in CQWs in an electric field.

Resonant state expansion applied to planar open optical systems

The resonant state expansion (RSE), a novel perturbation theory of Brillouin-Wigner type developed in electrodynamics [Muljarov, Langbein, and Zimmermann, Europhys. Lett., 92, 50010(2010)], is applied to planar, effectively one-dimensional optical systems, such as layered dielectric slabs and Bragg reflector microcavities. It is demonstrated that the RSE converges with a power law in the basis size. Algorithms for error estimation and their reduction by extrapolation are presented and evaluated. Complex eigenfrequencies, electro-magnetic fields, and the Green's function of a selection of optical systems are calculated, as well as the observable transmission spectra. In particular we find that for a Bragg-mirror microcavity, which has sharp resonances in the spectrum, the transmission calculated using the resonant state expansion reproduces the result of the transfer/scattering matrix method.

Terahertz Response of Acoustically-Driven Optical Phonons

The manipulation of TO-phonon polaritons and the terahertz (THz) light field associated with them by means of an ultra-sound acoustic wave is proposed and illustrated by calculating the TO-phonon-mediated THz response of acoustically-pumped CuCl and TlCl crystals. We show the high-contrast acoustically-induced change of the THz reflectivity alongside with multiple THz Bragg replicas, which are associated with the infrared-active TO-phonon resonance driven by the ultrasonic wave. The effect, which stems from phonon anharmonicity, refers to an operating acoustic intensity I_ac ~ 1-100 kW/cm^2 and frequency nu_ac ~ 0.1 - 1 GHz, with possible applications in THz spectroscopy.

Kinetics of the inner ring in the exciton emission pattern in GaAs coupled quantum wells

We report on the kinetics of the inner ring in the exciton emission pattern. The formation time of the inner ring following the onset of the laser excitation is found to be about 30 ns. The inner ring was also found to disappear within 4 ns after the laser termination. The latter process is accompanied by a jump in the photoluminescence (PL) intensity. The spatial dependence of the PL-jump indicates that the excitons outside of the region of laser excitation, including the inner ring region, are efficiently cooled to the lattice temperature even during the laser excitation. The ring formation and disappearance are explained in terms of exciton transport and cooling.

Exciton dephasing in quantum dots: Coupling to LO phonons via excited states

We have found a novel mechanism of spectral broadening and dephasing in quantum dots (QDs) due to the coupling to longitudinal-optical (LO) phonons. In theory, this mechanism comes into play only if the complete manifold of exciton levels (including those in the wetting-layer continuum) is taken into account. We demonstrate this nontrivial dephasing in different types of QDs, using the exactly solvable quadratic coupling model, here generalized to an arbitrary number of excitonic states.

LO Phonon-Induced Exciton Dephasing in Quantum Dots: An Exactly Solvable Model

It is widely believed that, due to its discrete nature, excitonic states in a quantum dot coupled to dispersionless LO phonons form everlasting mixed states (exciton polarons) showing no line broadening in the spectrum. This is indeed true if the model is restricted to a limited number of excitonic states in a quantum dot. We show, however, that extending the model to a large number of states results in LO phonon-induced spectral broadening and complete decoherence of the optical response.

Nonlinear optical response and exciton dephasing in quantum dots

The full time-dependent four-wave mixing polarization in quantum dots is microscopically calculated, taking into account acoustic phonon-assisted transitions between different exciton states of the dot. It is shown that quite different dephasing times of higher exciton states in pancake anisotropic InGaAs quantum dots are responsible for the experimentally observed [1] double-exponential decay in the photon echo signal.

Phonon-induced Exciton Dephasing in Quantum Dot Molecules

A new microscopic approach to the optical transitions in quantum dots and quantum dot molecules, which accounts for both diagonal and non-diagonal exciton-phonon interaction, is developed. The cumulant expansion of the linear polarization is generalized to a multilevel system and is applied to calculation of the full time dependence of the polarization and the absorption spectrum. In particular, the broadening of zero-phonon lines is evaluated directly. It is found that in some range of the dot distance real phonon-assisted transitions between exciton states dominate the dephasing, while virtual transitions are of minor importance. The influence of Coulomb interaction, tunneling, and structural asymmetry on the exciton dephasing in quantum dot molecules is analyzed.

Dephasing in Quantum Dots: Quadratic Coupling to Acoustic Phonons

A microscopic theory of optical transitions in quantum dots with carrier-phonon interaction is developed. Virtual transitions into higher confined states with acoustic phonon assistance add a quadratic phonon coupling to the standard linear one, thus extending the independent Boson model. Summing infinitely many diagrams in the cumulant, a numerically exact solution for the interband polarization is found. Its full time dependence and the absorption lineshape of the quantum dot are calculated. It is the quadratic interaction which gives rise to a temperature-dependent broadening of the zero-phonon line, being here calculated for the first time in a consistent scheme.
