Expansion of matter waves in static and driven periodic potentials

We study the non-equilibrium dynamics of cold atoms held in an optical lattice potential. The expansion of an initially confined atom cloud occurs in two phases: an initial quadratic expansion followed by a ballistic behaviour at long times. Accounting for this gives a good description of recent experimental results, and provides a robust method to extract the effective intersite tunneling from time-of-flight measurements.

Double-lambda microscopic model for entangled light generation by four-wave-mixing

Motivated by recent experiments, we study four-wave-mixing in an atomic double-Λ system driven by a far-detuned pump. Using the Heisenberg-Langevin formalism, and based on the microscopic properties of the medium, we calculate the classical and quantum properties of seed and conju- gate beams beyond the linear amplifier approximation. A continuous variable approach gives us access to relative-intensity noise spectra that can be directly compared to experiments. Restricting ourselves to the cold-atom regime, we predict the generation of quantum-correlated beams with a relative-intensity noise spectrum well below the standard quantum limit (down to -6 dB). Moreover entanglement between seed and conjugate beams measured by an inseparability down to 0.25 is expected. This work opens the way to the generation of entangled beams by four-wave mixing in a cold atomic sample.

Time-resolved measurement of Landau--Zener tunneling in different bases

A comprehensive study of the tunneling dynamics of a Bose--Einstein condensate in a tilted periodic potential is presented. We report numerical and experimental results on time-resolved measurements of the Landau--Zener tunneling of ultracold atoms introduced by the tilt, which experimentally is realized by accelerating the lattice. The use of different protocols enables us to access the tunneling probability, numerically as well as experimentally, in two different bases, namely, the adiabatic basis and the diabatic basis. The adiabatic basis corresponds to the eigenstates of the lattice, and the diabatic one to the free-particle momentum eigenstates. Our numerical and experimental results are compared with existing two-state Landau--Zener models.

Ion detection in the photoionization of a Rb Bose-Einstein condensate

Two-photon ionization of Rubidium atoms in a magneto-optical trap and a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) is experimentally investigated. Using 100 ns laser pulses, we detect single ions photoionized from the condenstate with a 35(10)% efficiency. The measurements are performed using a quartz cell with external electrodes, allowing large optical access for BECs and optical lattices.

Tunneling control and localization for Bose-Einstein condensates in a frequency modulated optical lattice

The similarity between matter waves in periodic potential and solid-state physics processes has triggered the interest in quantum simulation using Bose-Fermi ultracold gases in optical lattices. The present work evidences the similarity between electrons moving under the application of oscillating electromagnetic fields and matter waves experiencing an optical lattice modulated by a frequency difference, equivalent to a spatially shaken periodic potential. We demonstrate that the tunneling properties of a Bose-Einstein condensate in shaken periodic potentials can be precisely controlled. We take additional crucial steps towards future applications of this method by proving that the strong shaking of the optical lattice preserves the coherence of the matter wavefunction and that the shaking parameters can be changed adiabatically, even in the presence of interactions. We induce reversibly the quantum phase transition to the Mott insulator in a driven periodic potential.

Time-resolved measurement of Landau-Zener tunneling in periodic potentials

We report time-resolved measurements of Landau-Zener tunneling of Bose-Einstein condensates in accelerated optical lattices, clearly resolving the step-like time dependence of the band populations. Using different experimental protocols we were able to measure the tunneling probability both in the adiabatic and in the diabatic bases of the system. We also experimentally determine the contribution of the momentum width of the Bose condensates to the width of the tunneling steps and discuss the implications for measuring the jump time in the Landau-Zener problem.

Trap modulation spectroscopy of the Mott-insulator transition in optical lattices

We introduce a new technique to probe the properties of an interacting cold atomic gas that can be viewed as a dynamical compressibility measurement. We apply this technique to the study of the superfluid to Mott insulator quantum phase transition in one and three dimensions for a bosonic gas trapped in an optical lattice. Excitations of the system are detected by time-of-flight measurements. The experimental data for the one-dimensional case are in good agreement with the results of a time-dependent density matrix renormalization group calculation.

Observation of photon-assisted tunneling in optical lattices

We have observed tunneling suppression and photon-assisted tunneling of Bose-Einstein condensates in an optical lattice subjected to a constant force plus a sinusoidal shaking. For a sufficiently large constant force, the ground energy levels of the lattice are shifted out of resonance and tunneling is suppressed; when the shaking is switched on, the levels are coupled by low-frequency photons and tunneling resumes. Our results agree well with theoretical predictions and demonstrate the usefulness of optical lattices for studying solid-state phenomena.

Dynamical control of matter-wave tunneling in periodic potentials

We report on measurements of dynamical suppression of inter-well tunneling of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a strongly driven optical lattice. The strong driving is a sinusoidal shaking of the lattice corresponding to a time-varying linear potential, and the tunneling is measured by letting the BEC freely expand in the lattice. The measured tunneling rate is reduced and, for certain values of the shaking parameter, completely suppressed. Our results are in excellent agreement with theoretical predictions. Furthermore, we have verified that in general the strong shaking does not destroy the phase coherence of the BEC, opening up the possibility of realizing quantum phase transitions by using the shaking strength as the control parameter.

Ultraslow propagation of matched pulses by four-wave mixing in an atomic vapor

We have observed the ultraslow propagation of matched pulses in nondegenerate four-wave mixing in a hot atomic vapor. Probe pulses as short as 70 ns can be delayed by a tunable time of up to 40 ns with little broadening or distortion. During the propagation, a probe pulse is amplified and generates a conjugate pulse which is faster and separates from the probe pulse before getting locked to it at a fixed delay. The precise timing of this process allows us to determine the key coefficients of the susceptibility tensor. The presence of gain in this system makes this system very interesting in the context of all-optical information processing.

Resonantly enhanced tunneling of Bose-Einstein condensates in periodic potentials

We report on measurements of resonantly enhanced tunneling of Bose-Einstein condensates loaded into an optical lattice. By controlling the initial conditions of our system we were able to observe resonant tunneling in the ground and the first two excited states of the lattice wells. We also investigated the effect of the intrinsic nonlinearity of the condensate on the tunneling resonances.

Dynamic cancellation of ac Stark shift for pulsed EIT/Raman optical lattice clocks

We propose a combination of Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT)/Raman and pulsed spectroscopy techniques to accurately cancel frequency shifts arising from EIT fields in forbidden optical lattice clock transitions of alkaline earth atoms. Time-separated laser pulses are designed to trap atoms in coherent superpositions while eliminating off-resonance ac Stark contributions at particular laser detunings from the intermediate excited state. The scheme achieves efficient population transfer up to 60% with potential inaccuracy $<$ $10^{-17}$. Cancellation of external light shifts determined by a density matrix approach is confirmed by a complex wave-function formalism, sufficient at the mHz accuracy, under low field strengths or short interaction times.

Strong relative intensity squeezing by 4-wave mixing in Rb vapor

We have measured -3.5 dB (-8.1 dB corrected for losses) relative intensity squeezing between the probe and conjugate beams generated by stimulated, nondegenerate four-wave mixing in hot rubidium vapor. Unlike early observations of squeezing in atomic vapors based on saturation of a two-level system, our scheme uses a resonant nonlinearity based on ground-state coherences in a three-level system. Since this scheme produces narrowband, squeezed light near an atomic resonance it is of interest for experiments involving cold atoms or atomic ensembles.

Manipulation of ultracold atomic mixtures using microwave techniques

We used microwave radiation to evaporatively cool a mixture of of 133Cs and 87Rb atoms in a magnetic trap. A mixture composed of an equal number (around 10^4) of Rb and Cs atoms in their doubly polarized states at ultracold temperatures was prepared. We also used microwaves to selectively evaporate atoms in different Zeeman states.

Two photon ionization of condensate atoms

The efficient photoionization of a Bose-Einstein condensate requires the creation of ions with the smallest possible transfer of atoms from the condensate into the thermal phase. The spontaneous decay from excited states into atomic states with momentum different from the initial one should be reduced. We investigate theoretically the two-photon ionization of a rubidium condensate using near resonant excitation to the 6P state and second photon at 421 nm or 1002 nm into the continuum. Different ionization schemes with coherent control of the first excitation and reduction of the spontaneous decay are presented.

Nonlinear effects for Bose Einstein condensates in optical lattices

We present our experimental investigations on the subject of dynamical nonlinearity-induced instabilities and of nonlinear Landau-Zener tunneling between two energy bands in a Rubidium Bose-Einstein condensate in an accelerated periodic potential. These two effects may be considered two different regimes (for small and large acceleration) of the same physical system and studied with the same experimental protocol. Nonlinearity introduces an asymmetry in Landau-Zener tunneling; as a result, tunneling from the ground state to the excited state is enhanced whereas in the opposite direction it is suppressed. When the acceleration is lowered, the condensate exhibits an unstable behaviour due to nonlinearity. We also carried out a full numerical simulation of both regimes integrating the full Gross-Pitaevskii equation; for the Landau-Zener effect we also used a simple two-level model. In both cases we found good agreement with the experimental results.

Sympathetic cooling and collisional properties of a Rb-Cs mixture

We report on measurements of the collisional properties of a mixture of $^{133}$Cs and $^{87}$Rb atoms in a magnetic trap at $μ\mathrm{K}$ temperatures. By selectively evaporating the Rb atoms using a radio-frequency field, we achieved sympathetic cooling of Cs down to a few $μ\mathrm{K}$. The inter-species collisional cross-section was determined through rethermalization measurements, leading to an estimate of $a_s=595 a_0$ for the s-wave scattering length for Rb in the $|F=2, m_F=2>$ and Cs in the $|F=4, m_F=4>$ magnetic states. We briefly speculate on the prospects for reaching Bose-Einstein condensation of Cs inside a magnetic trap through sympathetic cooling.

Towards fabrication of ordered gallium nanostructures by laser manipulation of neutral atoms: study of self-assembling phenomena

Surface diffusion has an impact on the lateral resolution of nanostructures in bottom-up atom nanofabrication. In this paper we study the effects of the gallium atoms self-assembled on silicon surfaces (100) patterned with trenches at different slopes. These particular substrate morphologies have been made to enable an effective deposition rate variation along the surface. In this way we experimentally mimic the effect of the atomic flux modulation created by standing wave during an atom nanofabrication experiment. Even if we observe self organization of gallium atoms on the surface, we conclude that the nano-islands are not affected by surface diffusion processes and the effective variation of the deposition rate per unit area is the dominant factor affecting the growth differences along the surface. This result demonstrates that the gallium atoms self-organization should not prevent the observation of a periodic nano-patterning created by atom nano-fabrication techniques.
