Orbital magnetic dynamics in chiral p-wave superconductors

We present a theory of orbital magnetic dynamics for a chiral p-wave superconductor with broken time-reversal symmetry. In contrast to the common Landau-Lifshitz theory for spin ferromagnets, the case of orbital magnetism cannot be described in terms of local magnetization density. Hence it is impossible to define unambiguously the spontaneous magnetic moment: the latter would depend on conditions of its experimental investigation. As an example of this we consider orbital magnetization waves and the domain structure energy.

Superconductor-metal transition in an ultrasmall Josephson junction biased by a noisy voltage source

Shot noise in a voltage source changes the character of the quantum (dissipative) phase transition in an ultrasmall Josephson junction: The superconductor-insulator transition transforms into the superconductor-metal transition. In the metallic phase the IV curve probes the voltage distribution generated by shot noise, whereas in the superconducting phase it probes the counting statistics of electrons traversing the noise junction.

Statistics of electron tunneling in normal tunnel junctions

Statistics of electron tunneling in normal tunnel junctions is studied analytically and numerically taking into account circuit (environment) effects. Full counting statistics, as well as full statistics of voltage and phase have been found for arbitrary times of observation. The theoretical analysis was based on the classical master equation, whereas the numerical simulations employed standard Monte-Carlo methods.

Comment on "Domain Structure in a Superconducting Ferromagnet"

According to Faure and Buzdin [Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 187202 (2005)], in a superconducting ferromagnet a domain structure with a period small compared with the London penetration depth can arise. They claim that this contradicts to the conclusion of Sonin [Phys. Rev. B, 66, 100504 (2002)] that ferromagnetic domain structure in the Meissner state of a superconducting ferromagnet is absent in equilibrium. This contradiction is imaginary, based on misinterpretation of the results of these two papers.

Tunnel junction as a noise probe

The paper investigates theoretically effects of noise on low-bias parts of $IV$ curves of tunnel junctions. The analysis starts from the effect of shot noise from an additional (noise) junction on the Coulomb blockaded Josephson junction in high-impedance environment. Asymmetry of shot noise characterized by its odd moments results in asymmetry of the $IV$ curve of the Josephson junction. At high currents through the noise junction the $IV$ curve is very sensitive to electron counting statistics. The theory is generalized on another type of noise (phase noise of a monochromatic AC input), on a normal Coulomb blockaded tunnel junction. The effect of shot noise on the $IV$ curve of a superconducting Josephson junction in low-impedance environment is also analyzed. From this effect one can obtain information on the time necessary for an electron to tunnel through the junction responsible for shot noise. In summary, the analysis demonstrates, that the low-bias part of the $IV$ curves of tunnel junctions can be a sensitive probe of various types of noise.

Surface spin waves in superconducting and insulating ferromagnets

Surface magnetization waves are studied on a semi-infinite magnetic medium in the perpendicular geometry. Both superconducting and insulating ferromagnets are considered. Exchange and dipole energies are taken into account, as well as retardation effects. At large wave vectors, the spectrum for a superconductor and insulator is the same, though for the former the branch is terminated much earlier than for the latter due to excitation of plasmons. At small wave vectors, the surface wave is more robust in the superconductor since it is separated from the bulk continuum by a finite gap.

Ground State and Tkachenko Modes of a Rapidly Rotating Bose-Einstein Condensate in the Lowest Landau Level State

The Letter considers the ground state and the Tkachenko modes for a rapidly rotating Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), when its macroscopic wave function is a coherent superposition of states analogous to the lowest Landau levels of a charge in a magnetic field. As well as in type II superconductors close to the critical magnetic field $H_{c2}$, this corresponds to a periodic vortex lattice. The exact value of the shear elastic modulus of the vortex lattice, which was known from the old works on type II superconductors, essentially exceeds the values calculated recently for BEC. This is important for comparison with observation of the Tkachenko mode in the rapidly rotating BEC.

Observation of shot-noise-induced asymmetry in the Coulomb blockaded Josephson junction

We have investigated the influence of shot noise on the IV-curves of a single mesoscopic Josephson junction. We observe a linear enhancement of zero-bias conductance of the Josephson junction with increasing shot noise power. Moreover, the IV-curves become increasingly asymmetric. Our analysis on the asymmetry shows that the Coulomb blockade of Cooper pairs is strongly influenced by the non-Gaussian character of the shot noise.

Effect of the shot-noise on a Coulomb blockaded single Josephson junction

We have investigated how the Coulomb blockade of a mesoscopic Josephson junction in a high-impedance environment is suppressed by shot noise from an adjacent junction. The presented theoretical analysis is an extension of the phase correlation theory for the case of a non-Gaussian noise. Asymmetry of the non-Gaussian noise should result in the shift of the conductance minimum from zero voltage and the ratchet effect (nonzero current at zero voltage), which have been experimentally observed. The analysis demonstrates that a Coulomb blockaded tunnel junction in a high impedance environment can be used as an effective noise detector.

Continuum Theory of Tkachenko Modes in Rotating Bose-Einstein Condensate

The present paper suggests the continuum theory of Tkachenko modes in a rotating 2D Bose-Einstein condensate taking into account density inhomogeneity and compressibility of the condensate. The problem requires solution of coupled hydrodynamic equations for vortex and liquid motion with proper boundary conditions, which were derived for the condensate described by the Thomas-Fermi approximation. Compressibility becomes essential at rapid rotation with angular velocity close to the trap frequency. The theory is in a reasonable agreement with experimental observation of Tkachenko modes.

Rotation-induced 3D vorticity in 4He superfluid films adsorbed on a porous glass

Detailed study of torsional oscillator experiments under steady rotation up to 6.28 rad/sec is reported for a 4He superfluid monolayer film formed in 1 micrometer-pore diameter porous glass. We found a new dissipation peak with the height being in proportion to the rotation speed, which is located to the lower temperature than the vortex pair unbinding peak observed in the static state. We propose that 3D coreless vortices ("pore vortices") appear under rotation to explain this new peak. That is, the new peak originates from dissipation close to the pore vortex lines, where large superfluid velocity shifts the vortex pair unbinding dissipation to lower temperature. This explanation is confirmed by observation of nonlinear effects at high oscillation amplitudes.

Excitation of Spin Waves in Superconducting Ferromagnets

This Letter presents a theoretical analysis of propagation of spin waves in a superconducting ferromagnet. The surface impedance was calculated for the case when the magnetization is normal to the sample surface. We found the frequencies at which the impedance and the power absorption have singularities related to the spin wave propagation, and determined the form of these singularities. With a suitable choice of parameters, there is a frequency interval in which two propagating spin waves of the same circular polarization are generated, one of them having a negative group velocity.

Peak-effect and surface crystal-glass transition for surface-pinned vortex array

The peak effect has been investigated in clean Nb crystals with artificially corrugated surfaces by measuring the linear surface impedance in the 1kHz-1MHz frequency range. From a two-mode analysis of the complex spectra, we establish that vortex dynamics is governed by surface pinning and deduce the associated vortex slippage length. We demonstrate experimentally and theoretically that the peak effect is related to a transition from collective to individual surface pinning. A proper account of the peak-effect anomalies implies softening of the shear rigidity by disorder-induced lattice deformations. This leads to a vortex crystal-glass transition induced by surface defects.

Comment on "Ferromagnetic film on a superconducting substrate"

A superconducting substrate is not able to shrink drastically domains in a ferromagnetic film, contrary to the prediction of Bulaevskii and Chudnovsky [Phys. Rev. B, 63, issue1 (2001)]. This is shown on the basis of the exact solution for the stripe domain structure.

Shot-noise governed Coulomb blockade in a single Josephson junction

We have investigated the influence of shot noise on the IV-curves of a single mesoscopic Josephson junction. We find that the blockade of the Cooper pair current is strongly suppressed in the presence of shot noise due to tunnelling in an adjacent SIN junction. Our experimental findings can be accounted for by an extension of the phase correlation theory. Shot-noise effect in a resistive environment R can be characterized by the effective noise temperature T_N = eIR /2 k_B, which means that a Josephson junction can easily detect shot noise from a current well below 1 pA.

Domain structure of superconducting ferromagnets

In superconducting ferromagnets the equilibrium domain structure is absent in the Meissner state, but appears in the spontaneous vortex phase (the mixed state in zero external magnetic field), though with a period, which can essentially exceed that in normal ferromagnets. Metastable domain walls are possible even in the Meissner state. The domain walls create magnetostatic fields near the sample surface, which can be used for experimental detection of domain walls.

Magnus Force and Aharonov-Bohm Effect in Superfluids

The paper addresses the problem of the transverse force (Magnus force) on a vortex in a Galilean invariant quantum Bose liquid. Interaction of quasiparticles (phonons) with a vortex produces an additional transverse force (Iordanskii force). The Iordanskii force is related to the acoustic Aharonov--Bohm effect.Connection of the effective Magnus force with the Berry phase is also discussed.

Tunneling into 1D and quasi-1D conductors and Luttinger-liquid behavior

The paper addresses the problem whether and how it is possible to detect the Luttinger-liquid behavior from the $IV$ curves for tunneling to 1D or quasi-1D conductors. The power-law non-ohmic $IV$ curve, which is usually considered as a manifestation of the Luttinger-liquid behavior, can be also deduced from the theory of the Coulomb blockaded junction between 3D conductors affected by the environment effect. In both approaches the power-law exponents are determined by the ratio of the impedance of an effective electric circuit to the quantum resistance. Though two approaches predict different power-law exponents (because of a different choice of effective circuits), the difference becomes negligible for a large number of conductance channels.
