Josephson-plasma and vortex modes in layered superconductors

The Josephson-plasma and vortex modes in layered superconductors have been studied theoretically for low magnetic fields parallel and perpendicular to layers. The two modes belong to the same lowest-frequency branch of collective-mode spectrum localized near vortices. This is the Josephson-plasma resonance if pancakes are strongly pinned and cannot move. Otherwise the lowest-frequency mode is a vortex mode governed by pancake pinning and the vortex mass. The latter is strongly enhanced by wandering of a vortex line around its average direction. The recently observed jump of the magnetoabsorption-resonance frequency at the vortex phase transition line is interpreted as a transition from the Josephson-plasma to the vortex mode.

Effect of quantum noise on Coulomb blockade in normal tunnel junctions at high voltages

We have investigated asymptotic behavior of normal tunnel junctions at voltages where even the best ohmic environments start to look like RC transmission lines. In the experiments, this is manifested by an exceedingly slow approach to the linear behavior above the Coulomb gap. As expected on the basis of the quantum theory taking into account interaction with the environmental modes, better fits are obtained using 1/sqrt{V}- than 1/V- dependence for the asymptote. These results agree with the horizon picture if the frequency-dependent phase velocity is employed instead of the speed of light in order to determine the extent of the surroundings seen by the junction.

"Superconductor-Insulator transition" in a single Josephson junction

VI-curves of resistively shunted single Josephson junctions with different capacitances and tunneling resistances are found to display a crossover between two types of VI-curves: one without and another with a resistance bump (negative second derivative) at zero-bias. The crossover corresponds to the dissipative phase transition (superconductor-insulator transition) at which macroscopic quantum tunneling delocalizes the Josephson phase and destroys superconductivity. Our measured phase diagram does not agree with the diagram predicted by the original theory, but does coincide with a theory that takes into account the accuracy of voltage measurements and thermal fluctuations.

Current density inhomogeneity throughout the thickness of superconducting films and its effect on their irreversible magnetic properties

We calculate the distribution of the current density $j$ in superconducting films along the direction of an external field applied perpendicular to the film plane. Our analysis reveals that in the presence of bulk pinning $j$ is inhomogeneous on a length scale of order the inter vortex distance. This inhomogeneity is significantly enhanced in the presence of surface pinning. We introduce new critical state model, which takes into account the current density variations throughout the film thickness, and show how these variations give rise to the experimentally observed thickness dependence of $% j$ and magnetic relaxation rate.

The Magnus force in superfluids and superconductors

The forces on the vortex, transverse to its velocity, are considered. In addition to the superfluid Magnus force from the condensate (superfluid component), there are transverse forces from thermal quasiparticles and external fields violating the translational invariance. The forces between quasiparticles and the vortex originate from interference of quasiparticles with trajectories on the left and on the right from the vortex like similar forces for electrons interacting with the thin magnetic-flux tube (the Aharonov-Bohm effect). These forces are derived in the Born approximation for phonons from the equations of superfluid hydrodynamics, and for BCS quasiparticles from the Bogolyubov-de Gennes equations. The effect of external fields violating translational invariance is analyzed for vortices in the two-dimensional Josephson junction array. The symmetry analysis of the classical equations for the array shows that the total transverse force on the vortex vanishes. Therefore the Hall effect which is linear in the transverse force is absent also. This means that the Magnus force from the superfluid component exactly cancels with the transverse force from the external fields. The results of other approaches are also brought together for discussion.

Interaction of Ultrasound with Vortices in Type-II Superconductors

The theory of the ultrasound propagation in the mixed state of type-II superconductors is suggested which takes into account the Magnus force on vortices, the anti-Magnus force on ions, and diamagnetism of the mixed state. The acoustic Faraday effect (rotation of polarization of the transverse ultrasonic wave propagating along vortices) is shown to be linear in the Magnus force in any regime of the flux flow for wavelengths used in the ultrasound experiments now. Therefore, in contrast to previous predictions, the Faraday effect should be looked for only in clean superconductors with a large amplitude of the Magnus force.
