On the effect of the Delta(1232) in hypernuclear non-mesonic weak decay: a microscopic approach

The non-mesonic weak decay of $Λ$-hypernuclei is studied within a microscopic diagrammatic approach which includes, for the first time, the effect or the $Δ$-baryon resonance. We adopt a nuclear matter formalism extended to finite nuclei via the local density approximation, a one-meson exchange weak transition potential, a Bonn nucleon-nucleon strong potential and a $ΔN\to NN$ strong potential based on the Landau-Migdal theory. Ground state correlations and final state interactions (FSI), at second order in the baryon-baryon strong interaction, are introduced on the same footing for all the isospin channels of one- and two-nucleon induced decays. Weak decay rates and single and double-coincidence nucleon spectra are predicted for $^{12}_Λ$C and compared with recent KEK and FINUDA data. The $Δ(1232)$ introduces new FSI-induced decay mechanisms which lead to an improvement when comparing the obtained nucleon spectra with data, while it turns out to have a negligible effect on the decay rates. Discrepancies with experiment remain only for emission spectra involving protons, but are mostly restricted to double-nucleon correlations in the non-back-to-back kinematics.

Pair breaking by nonmagnetic impurities in the noncentrosymmetric superconductor CePt3Si

We have studied the effect of Ge substitution and pressure on the heavy-fermion superconductor CePt3Si. Ge substitution on the Si site acts as negative chemical pressure leading to an increase in the unit-cell volume but also introduces chemical disorder. We carried out electrical resistivity and ac heat-capacity experiments under hydrostatic pressure on CePt3Si1-xGex (x=0, 0.06). Our experiments show that the suppression of superconductivity in CePt3Si1-xGex is mainly caused by the scattering potential, rather than volume expansion, introduced by the Ge dopants. The antiferromagnetic order is essentially not affected by the chemical disorder.

Microscopic approach to the proton asymmetry in the non-mesonic weak decay of Lambda-hypernuclei

The non--mesonic weak decay of polarized $Λ$-hypernuclei is studied with a microscopic diagrammatic formalism in which one- and two-nucleon induced decay mechanisms, $\vecΛ N \to NN$ and $\vecΛ NN \to NNN$, are considered together with (and on the same ground of) nucleon final state interactions. We adopt a nuclear matter formalism extended to finite nuclei via the local density approximation. Our approach adopts different one-meson-exchange weak transition potentials, while the strong interaction effects are accounted for by a Bonn nucleon-nucleon interaction. We also consider the two-pion-exchange effect in the weak transition potential. Both the two-nucleon induced decay mechanism and the final state interactions reduce the magnitude of the asymmetry. The quantum interference terms considered in the present microscopic approach give rise to an opposite behavior of the asymmetry with increasing energy cuts to that observed in models describing the nucleon final state interactions semi-classically via the intranuclear cascade code. Our results for the asymmetry parameter in $^{12}_Λ$C obtained with different potential models are consistent with the asymmetry measured at KEK.

Thermoelectric properties of Ba-Cu-Si clathrates

Thermoelectric properties of the type-I clathrates Ba$_8$Cu$_x$Si$_{46-x}$ ($3.6 \leq x \leq 7$, $x$ = nominal Cu content) are investigated both experimentally and theoretically. The polycrystalline samples are prepared either by melting, ball milling and hot pressing or by melt spinning, hand milling and hot pressing techniques. Temperature-dependent electrical resistivity, $ρ(T)$, and the Seebeck coefficient, $S(T)$, measurements reveal metal-like behavior for all samples. For $x = 5$ and 6, density functional theory calculations are performed for deriving the enthalpy of formation and the electronic structure which is exploited for the calculation of Seebeck coefficients and conductivity within Boltzmann's transport theory. For simulating the properties of doped clathrates the rigid band model is applied. On the basis of the density functional theory results the experimentally observed compositional dependence of $ρ(T)$ and $S(T)$ of the whole sample series is analyzed. The highest dimensionless thermoelectric figure of merit $ZT$ of 0.28 is reached for a melt-spun sample at $600^{\circ}$C. The relatively low $ZT$ values in this system are attributed to the too high charge carrier concentrations.

Dispersion and damping of zone-boundary magnons in the noncentrosymmetric superconductor CePt3Si

Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) is employed to study damped spin-wave excitations in the noncentrosymmetric heavy-fermion superconductor CePt3Si along the antiferromagnetic Brillouin-zone boundary in the low-temperature magnetically ordered state. Measurements along the (1/2 1/2 L) and (H H 1/2-H) reciprocal-space directions reveal deviations in the spin-wave dispersion from the previously reported model. Broad asymmetric shape of the peaks in energy signifies strong spin-wave damping by interactions with the particle-hole continuum. Their energy width exhibits no evident anomalies as a function of momentum along the (1/2 1/2 L) direction, which could be attributed to Fermi-surface nesting effects, implying the absence of pronounced commensurate nesting vectors at the magnetic zone boundary. In agreement with a previous study, we find no signatures of the superconducting transition in the magnetic excitation spectrum, such as a magnetic resonant mode or a superconducting spin gap, either at the magnetic ordering wavevector (0 0 1/2) or at the zone boundary. However, the low superconducting transition temperature in this material still leaves the possibility of such features being weak and therefore hidden below the incoherent background at energies ~0.1 meV, precluding their detection by INS.

Stress engineering at the nanometer scale: Two-component adlayer stripes

Spontaneously formed equilibrium nanopatterns with long-range order are widely observed in a variety of systems, but their pronounced temperature dependence remains an impediment to maintain such patterns away from the temperature of formation. Here, we report on a highly ordered stress-induced stripe pattern in a two-component, Pd-O, adsorbate monolayer on W(110), produced at high temperature and identically preserved at lower temperatures. The pattern shows a tunable period (down to 16 nm) and orientation, as predicted by a continuum model theory along with the surface stress and its anisotropy found in our DFT calculations. The control over thermal fluctuations in the stripe formation process is based on the breaking/restoring of ergodicity in a high-density lattice gas with long-range interactions upon turning off/on particle exchange with a heat bath.

Microscopic Approach to Nucleon Spectra in Hypernuclear Non-Mesonic Weak Decay

A consistent microscopic diagrammatic approach is applied for the first time to the calculation of the nucleon emission spectra in the non-mesonic weak decay of Lambda-hypernuclei. We adopt a nuclear matter formalism extended to finite nuclei via the local density approximation, a one--meson exchange weak transition potential and a Bonn nucleon-nucleon strong potential. Ground state correlations and final state interactions, at second order in the nucleon--nucleon interaction, are introduced on the same footing for all the isospin channels of one- and two-nucleon induced decays. Single and double--coincidence nucleon spectra are predicted for 12_Lambda^C and compared with recent KEK and FINUDA data. The key role played by quantum interference terms allows us to improve the predictions obtained with intranuclear cascade codes. Discrepancies with data remain for proton emission.

Unconventional superconductivity in weakly correlated, non-centrosymmetric $\rm{Mo_3Al_2C}$

Electrical resistivity, specific heat and NMR measurements classify non-centrosymmetric $\rm Mo_3Al_2C$ ($β$-Mn type, space group $P4_132$) as a strong-coupled superconductor with $T_c = 9$~K deviating notably from BCS-like behaviour. The absence of a Hebbel-Slichter peak, a power law behaviour of the spin-lattice relaxation rate (from $^{27}$Al NMR), a $T^3$ temperature dependence of the specific heat and a pressure enhanced $T_c$ suggest unconventional superconductivity with a nodal structure of the superconducting gap. Relativistic DFT calculations reveal a splitting of degenerate electronic bands due to the asymmetric spin-orbit coupling, favouring a mix of spin-singlet and spin triplet components in the superconducting condensate, in absence of strong correlations among electrons.

Temperature dependence of surface stress across an order-disorder transition: p(1x2)O/W(110)

Strain relaxations of a p(1x2) ordered oxygen layer on W(110) are measured as a function of temperature across the disordering transition using low-energy electron diffraction. The measured strains approach values of 0.027 in the [1-10] and -0.053 in the [001] direction. On the basis of the measured strain relaxations, we give quantitative information on temperature-dependent surface stress using the results of ab initio calculations. From the surface formation energy for different strains, determined by first-principles calculations, we estimate that surface stress changes from -1.1 for the ordered phase to -0.2N/m for the disordered one along [1-10], and from 5.1 to 3.4 N/m along [001]. Moreover, our observation that the strains scale inversely with domain size confirms that the strain relaxation takes place at the domain boundaries.

A Theoretical Determination of N_{nn}/N_{np} in Hypernuclear Non--Mesonic Weak Decay

The ratio N_{nn}/N_{np} between the number of neutron-neutron and neutron--proton pairs emitted in the non--mesonic weak decay of Λ-hypernuclei is calculated within a nuclear matter formalism extended to ^{12}_{Lambda}C via the local density approximation. The single--nucleon emission spectra, N_p and N_n, are also evaluated. Our formalism takes care of both ground state correlations (gsc) and final state interactions (FSI). The evaluation of N_{nn}/N_{np} which, unlike Gamma_n/Gamma_p = Gamma(Lambda n -> nn)/Gamma(Lambda p -> np), is an actual observable quantity in non--mesonic decay is performed within a fully microscopic model where a proper treatment of FSI, gsc and ground state normalization is considered. All the isospin channels contributing to one-- and two--nucleon induced decays are included. Our final result for the coincidence number ratio, N_{nn}/N_{np}=0.374, is in agreement with the KEK--E508 datum, (N_{nn}/N_{np})^{\rm exp}=0.40 +/- 0.10.

On the role of ground state correlations in hypernuclear non-mesonic weak decay

The contribution of ground state correlations (GSC) to the non--mesonic weak decay of $^{12}_Λ$C and other medium to heavy hypernuclei is studied within a nuclear matter formalism implemented in a local density approximation. We adopt a weak transition potential including the exchange of the complete octets of pseudoscalar and vector mesons as well as a residual strong interaction modeled on the Bonn potential. Leading GSC contributions, at first order in the residual strong interaction, are introduced on the same footing for all isospin channels of one-- and two--nucleon induced decays. Together with fermion antisymmetrization, GSC turn out to be important for an accurate determination of the decay widths. Besides opening the two--nucleon stimulated decay channels, for $^{12}_Λ$C GSC are responsible for 14% of the rate $Γ_1$ while increasing the $Γ_{n}/Γ_{p}$ ratio by 4%. Our final results for $^{12}_Λ$C are: $Γ_{\rm NM}=0.98$, $Γ_{n}/Γ_{p}=0.34$ and $Γ_2/Γ_{\rm NM}=0.26$. The saturation property of $Γ_{\rm NM}$ with increasing hypernuclear mass number is clearly observed. The agreement with data of our predictions for $Γ_{\rm NM}$, $Γ_n/Γ_p$ and $Γ_2$ is rather good.

Suppression of asymmetric differential resistance in non-Fermi liquid system YbCu_(5-x)Al_(x) (x = 1.3 - 1.75) in high magnetic fields

The non-Fermi liquid system (NFL) YbCu_(5-x)Al_(x) (x = 1.3 - 1.75) has been investigated in hetero- as well as homo-contact arrangement in magnetic fields up to 22.5 T. The observed dV/dI(V) characteristics reveal asymmetry in hetero-contact arrangement and do not agree with the model of thermal contact heating, at least close to zero-bias voltage. In the case of a hetero-contact arrangement we have observed a maximum at only one voltage polarity at about 1.3 mV (for x = 1.5), which asymmetry is suppressed in an applied magnetic field. This behavior is connected with NFL properties of studied compounds.

Pressure-induced spin-density-wave transition in superconducting Mo3Sb7

We report a novel pressure-induced spin-density-wave transition in the superconductor Mo3Sb7 figured our by measurements of the electrical resistivity and magnetization under hydrostatic pressure. The critical temperature of superconducting Mo3Sb7 is found to increase with increasing pressure, from 2.15 K at 0.2 kbar up to 2.37 K at 22 kbar. Above 4.5 kbar, superconductivity exists in parallel with a pressure-induced spin-density wave state, revealed by a sharp jump in the electrical resistivity and a maximum in the magnetization at the phase transition temperature T_SDW. The application of pressure shifts T_SDW to lower temperatures, from 6.6 K at 4.5 kbar down to 6.15 K at 22 kbar. A strong magnetic field dependence of T_SDW and a maximum seen in the magnetization indicate an antiferromagnetic character of T_SDW. The pressure dependence of T_c and T_SDW suggests a competition of the SDW and the superconducting states in this system.

Unusual behaviours and Impurity Effects in the Noncentrosymmetric Superconductor CePt3Si

We report a study in which the effect of defects/impurities, growth process, off-stoichiometry, and presence of impurity phases on the superconducting properties of noncentrosymmetric CePt3Si is analysed by means of the temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth. We found that the linear low-temperature response of the penetration depth -indicative of line nodes in this material- is robust regarding sample quality, in contrast to what is observed in unconventional centrosymmetric superconductors with line nodes. We discuss evidence that the broadness of the superconducting transition may be intrinsic, though not implying the existence of a second superconducting transition. The superconducting transition temperature systematically occurs around 0.75 K in our measurements, in agreement with resistivity and ac magnetic susceptibility data but in conflict with specific heat, thermal conductivity and NMR data in which Tc is about 0.5 K. Random defects do not change the linear low-temperature dependence of the penetration depth in the heavy-fermion CePt3Si with line nodes, as they do in unconventional centrosymmetric superconductors with line nodes.

Extreme vortex pinning in the non-centrosymmetric superconductor CePt$_{3}$Si

We report on the vortex dynamics of a single crystal of the non-centrosymmetric heavy-fermion superconductor CePt$_{3}$Si. Decays of the remnant magnetization display a clean logarithmic time dependence with rates that follow the temperature dependence expected from the Kim-Anderson theory. The creep rates are lower than observed in any other centrosymmetric superconductor and are not caused by high critical currents. On the contrary, the critical current in CePt$_{3}$Si is considerably lower than in other superconductors with strong vortex pinning indicating that an alternative impediment on the flux line motion might be at work in this superconductor.

Exchange terms in the two--nucleon induced non--mesonic weak decay of $Λ$--hypernuclei

The contribution of Pauli exchange terms to the two--nucleon induced non--mesonic weak decay of $^{12}_Λ$C hypernuclei, $ΛNN\to nNN$ ($N=n$ or $p$), is studied within a nuclear matter formalism implemented in a local density approximation. We have adopted a weak transition potential including the exchange of the complete octets of pseudoscalar and vector mesons as well as a residual strong interaction modeled on the Bonn potential. The introduction of exchange terms turns out to reduce the two--nucleon induced non--mesonic rate by 18% and, jointly with an increase in the one--nucleon induced rate by the same magnitude, reveals to be significant for an accurate determination of the full set of hypernuclear non--mesonic decay widths in theoretical and experimental analyses.

Evolution of Quantum Criticality in CeNi_{9-x}Cu_xGe_4

Crystal structure, specific heat, thermal expansion, magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity studies of the heavy fermion system CeNi_{9-x}Cu_xGe_4 (0 <= x <= 1) reveal a continuous tuning of the ground state by Ni/Cu substitution from an effectively fourfold degenerate non-magnetic Kondo ground state of CeNi_9Ge_4 (with pronounced non-Fermi-liquid features) towards a magnetically ordered, effectively twofold degenerate ground state in CeNi_8CuGe_4 with T_N = 175 +- 5 mK. Quantum critical behavior, C/T ~ χ~ -ln(T), is observed for x about 0.4. Hitherto, CeNi_{9-x}Cu_xGe_4 represents the first system where a substitution-driven quantum phase transition is connected not only with changes of the relative strength of Kondo effect and RKKY interaction, but also with a reduction of the effective crystal field ground state degeneracy.

Nonmesonic weak decay spectra of $^4_Λ$He

To comprehend the recent Brookhaven National Laboratory experiment E788 on $^4_Λ$He, we have outlined a simple theoretical framework, based on the independent-particle shell model, for the one-nucleon-induced nonmesonic weak decay spectra. Basically, the shapes of all the spectra are tailored by the kinematics of the corresponding phase space, depending very weakly on the dynamics, which is gauged here by the one-meson-exchange-potential. In spite of the straightforwardness of the approach a good agreement with data is acheived. This might be an indication that the final-state-interactions and the two-nucleon induced processes are not very important in the decay of this hypernucleus. We have also found that the $π+K$ exchange potential with soft vertex-form-factor cutoffs $(Λ_π\approx 0.7$ GeV, $Λ_K \approx 0.9$ GeV), is able to account simultaneously for the available experimental data related to $Γ_p$ and $Γ_n$ for $^4_Λ$H, $^4_Λ$He, and $^5_Λ$He.
