Multiband Superconductivity in Heavy Fermion Compound CePt3Si without Inversion Symmetry: An NMR Study on a High-Quality Single Crystal

We report on novel superconducting characteristics of the heavy fermion (HF) superconductor CePt3Si without inversion symmetry through 195Pt-NMR study on a single crystal with T_c= 0.46 K that is lower than T_c= 0.75 K for polycrystals. We show that the intrinsic superconducting characteristics inherent to CePt3Si can be understood in terms of the unconventional strong-coupling state with a line-node gap below T_c= 0.46 K. The mystery about the sample dependence of T_c is explained by the fact that more or less polycrystals and single crystals inevitably contain some disordered domains, which exhibit a conventional BCS s-wave superconductivity (SC) below 0.8 K. In contrast, the Neel temperature T_N= 2.2 K is present regardless of the quality of samples, revealing that the Fermi surface responsible for SC differ from that for the antiferromagnetic order. These unusual characteristics of CePt3Si can be also described by a multiband model; in the homogeneous domains, the coherent HF bands are responsible for the unconventional SC, whereas in the disordered domains the conduction bands existing commonly in LaPt3Si may be responsible for the conventional s-wave SC. We remark that some impurity scatterings in the disordered domains break up the 4f-electrons-derived coherent bands but not others. In this context, the small peak in 1/T_1 just below T_c reported in the previous paper (Yogi et al, 2004) is not due to a two-component order parameter composed of spin-singlet and spin-triplet Cooper pairing states, but due to the contamination of the disorder domains which are in the s-wave SC state.

Stress induced stripe formation in Pd/W(110)

A stress-induced stripe phase of submonolayer Pd on W(110) is observed by low-energy electron microscopy. The temperature dependence of the pattern is explained by the change both in the boundary free energy and elastic relaxation energy due to the increasing boundary width. The stripes are shown to disorder when the correlation length of the condensed phase becomes comparable to its period, while the condensate to lattice-gas transition takes place at a higher temperature, as revealed by low-energy electron diffraction.

Ground state normalization in the nonmesonic weak decay of $^{12}_ΛC$ hypernucleus within a nuclear matter formalism

The nonmesonic weak decay width of $^{12}_ΛC$ hypernucleus has been evaluated within a nuclear matter formalism, using the local density approximation. In addition to the one-body induced decay $(ΛN \to n N)$, it has been also considered the two-body induced decay $(ΛNN \to n N N)$. This second decay is originated from ground state correlations, where a renormalization procedure to ensure a ground state normalized to one has been implemented. Our results show that the plain addition of the two-body induced decay implies a lost in the ground state-norm, which adds $\sim 38%$ of spurious intensity to the nonmesonic weak decay width. By an adequate selection of the $ΛN$-transition potential, our result for the nonmesonic weak decay width of $^{12}_ΛC$ is 0.956, in good agreement with the most recent data.

Effect of static and dynamic disorder on electronic transport of $RCo_2$ compounds: a study of $Ho(Al_xCo_{1-x})_2$ alloys

We present experimental results on thermoelectric power ({\em S}) and electrical resistivity ($ρ$) of pseudobinary alloys Ho(Al$_x$Co$_{1-x}$)$_2$ ($0 \leq x \leq 0.1 $), in the temperature range 4.2 K to 300 K. The work focuses on the effects of static (induced by alloying) and dynamic (induced by temperature) disorder on the magnetic state and electronic transport in a metallic system with itinerant metamagnetic instability. Spatial fluctuations of the local magnetic susceptibility in the alloys lead to a development of a partially ordered magnetic ground state of the itinerant 3d electron system. This results in a strong increase of the residual resistivity and a suppression of the temperature-dependent resistivity. Thermopower exhibits a complex temperature variation in both the magnetically ordered and in the paramagnetic state. This complex temperature variation is referred to the electronic density of states features in vicinity of Fermi energy and to the interplay of magnetic and impurity scattering. Our results indicate that the magnetic enhancement of the Co 3d-band in RCo$_{\rm 2}$--based alloys upon a substitution of Co by non-magnetic elements is mainly related to a progressive localization of the Co -- 3d electrons caused by disorder. We show that the magnitude of the resistivity jump at the Curie temperature for RCo$_{\rm 2}$ compounds exhibiting a first order phase transition is a non-monotonic function of the Curie temperature due to a saturation of the 3d--band spin fluctuation magnitude at high temperatures.

Note on the ring approximation in nuclear matter

The response function to an external prove is evaluated using the ring approximation in nuclear matter. Contrary to what it is usually assumed, it is shown that the summation of the ring series and the solution of the Dyson's equation are two different approaches. The numerical results exhibit a perceptible difference between both approximations.

Strain relaxation in small adsorbate islands: O on W(110)

The stress-induced lattice changes in a p(1x2) ordered oxygen layer on W(110) are measured by low-energy electron diffraction. We have observed that small oxygen islands show a mismatch with the underlying lattice. Our results indicate that along [1-10] the average mismatch scales inversely with the island size as 1/L for all oxygen coverages up to 0.5 ML, while along [001] it is significant only for the smallest oxygen islands and scales as a higher power of the inverse island size. The behaviour along [1-10] is described by a one-dimensional finite-size Frenkel-Kontorova model. Using this model, together with calculated force constants, we make a quantitative estimate for the change of surface-stress upon oxygen adsorption. The result is consistent with our ab-initio calculations, which give a relative compressive stress of -4.72 N/m along [1-10] and a minute relative tensile stress of 0.15 N/m along [001]. The scaling along [001] is qualitatively explained as an effect induced by the lattice relaxation in the [1-10] direction.

Superconductivity in novel Ge-based skutterudites: {Sr,Ba}Pt_4Ge_{12}

Combining experiments and ab initio models we report on $\rm SrPt_4Ge_{12}$ and $\rm BaPt_4Ge_{12}$ as members of a novel class of superconducting skutterudites, where Sr or Ba atoms stabilize a framework entirely formed by Ge-atoms. Below $T_c=5.35$ K, and 5.10 K for $\rm BaPt_4Ge_{12}$ and $\rm SrPt_4Ge_{12}$, respectively, electron-phonon coupled superconductivity emerges, ascribed to intrinsic features of the Pt-Ge framework, where Ge-$p$ states dominate the electronic structure at the Fermi energy.

Quantum interference terms in nonmesonic weak decay of $Λ$-hypernuclei within a RPA formalism

Single and double coincidence nucleon spectra in the $Λ$-hypernuclei weak decay are evaluated and discussed using a microscopic formalism. Nuclear matter is employed together with the local density approximation which allows us to analyze the $^{12}_ΛC$ hypernucleus non-mesonic weak decay. Final state interactions (FSI) are included via the first order (in the nuclear residual interaction) terms to the RPA, where the strong residual interaction is modelled by a Bonn potential. At this level of approximation, these FSI are pure quantum interference terms between the primary decay $(ΛN \to NN)$ and $(ΛN \to NN \to NN)$, where the strong interaction is responsible for the last piece in the second reaction. Also the Pauli exchange contributions are explicitly evaluated. We show that the inclusion of Pauli exchange terms is important. A comparison with data is made. We conclude that the limitations in phase space in the RPA makes this approximation inadequate to reproduce the nucleon spectra. This fact, does not allow us to draw a definite conclusion about the importance of the interference terms.

Nonmesonic weak decay of $Λ$ hypernuclei within a nuclear matter framework

The nonmesonic weak decay of $Λ$ hypernuclei is studied using nuclear matter. We have developed a formalism which gives a microscopic interpretation of the process of emission of particles originated in this decay. More specifically, our scheme provides a unified treatment of $Γ(ΛN \to NN$) and $N_{N}$ ($N_{NN}$), the $Λ$ non-mesonic weak decay widths and the number of emitted particles (pair of particles) of kind $N$ ($NN$), respectively. We have also evaluated for the first time the quantum interference terms between the $n$- and $p$-induced weak decay amplitudes. Explicit expressions for $N_{N}$ and $N_{NN}$ are shown within the ring approximation. Using the local density approximation together with the ring approximation, we report results for the decay of the $^{12}_ΛC$ hypernucleus. We have obtained values for the ratio $N_{n}/N_{p}$ ($N_{nn}/N_{np}$) in the range $1.4-1.6$ ($0.2-0.3$), where no energy threshold have been employed. The $n$- and $p$-induced interference terms modify in less than $\sim 3 %$ these results.

Single and double coincidence nucleon spectra in the weak decay of Lambda hypernuclei

Recent progress has been experienced in the field of hypernuclear weak decay, especially concerning the ratio of the neutron- to proton-induced Lambda non-mesonic decay rates, G_n/G_p. Theoretical analyses of nucleon coincidence data have been performed in a finite nucleus framework. They led to the extraction of G_n/G_p values in agreement with pure theoretical estimates, thus providing an evidence for the solution of a longstanding puzzle. Here we present an alternative approach to the problem, based on a nuclear matter formalism extended to finite nuclei via the local density approximation. The work is motivated by the exigence to make the determination of G_n/G_p from data less model dependent. One-meson-exchange potentials are used for describing both the one- and two-nucleon induced decays, Lambda N -> n N and Lambda N N -> n N N. For the latter, treated within a microscopic approach, the channels Lambda n n -> n n n and Lambda p p -> n p p are included in addition to the mode Lambda n p -> n n p already considered, in a phenomenological way, in previous studies. The propagation of the final nucleons in the residual nucleus is simulated by an intranuclear cascade code. We evaluate single and double coincidence nucleon spectra for the non-mesonic decay of C-12-Lambda. Through the comparison of our predictions with KEK coincidence data we determine G_n/G_p=0.43 \pm 0.10 for this hypernucleus, confirming previous finite nucleus analyses.

Unusual Non-Fermi Liquid Behavior of Ce$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$Ni$_{9}$Ge$_4$ Analyzed in a Single Impurity Anderson Model with Crystal Field Effects

CeNi$_{9}$Ge$_4$ exhibits unusual non-Fermi liquid behavior with the largest ever recorded value of the electronic specific heat $ΔC/T \cong 5.5$ JK$^{-2}$mol$^{-1}$ without showing any evidence of magnetic order. Specific heat measurements show that the logarithmic increase of the Sommerfeld coefficient flattens off below 200 mK. In marked contrast, the local susceptibility $Δχ$ levels off well above 200 mK and already becomes constant below 1 K. Furthermore, the entropy reaches 2$R$ln2 below 20 K corresponding to a four level system. An analysis of $C$ and $χ$ was performed in terms of an $SU(N=4)$ single impurity Anderson model with additional crystal electric field (CEF) splitting. Numerical renormalization group calculations point to a possible consistent description of the different low temperature scales in $Δc$ and $Δχ$ stemming from the interplay of Kondo effect and crystal field splitting.

Crossover from Single-Ion to Coherent Non-Fermi Liquid Behavior in Ce$_{1-x}$La$_x$Ni$_9$Ge$_4$

We report specific heat and magneto-resistance studies on the compound Ce${}_{1-x}$La${}_x$Ni${}_9$Ge${}_4$ for various concentrations over the entire stoichiometric range. Our data reveal single-ion scaling with Ce-concentration between $x = 0.1$ and 0.95. Furthermore, CeNi${}_9$Ge${}_4$ turns out to have the largest ever recorded value of the electronic specific heat $Δc/T \approx$ 5.5 J $\rm K^{-2}mol^{-1}$ at $T=0.08$ K which was found in Cerium f-electron lattice systems. In the doped samples $Δc/T$ increases logarithmically in the temperature range between 3 K and 50 mK typical for non-Fermi liquid (nFl) behavior, while $ρ$ exhibits a Kondo-like minimum around 30 K, followed by a single-ion local nFl behavior. In contrast to this, CeNi${}_9$Ge${}_4$ flattens out in $Δc/T$ below 300 mK and displays a pronounced maximum in the resistivity curve at 1.5 K indicating a coherent heavy fermion groundstate. These properties render the compound Ce${}_{1-x}$La${}_x$Ni${}_9$Ge${}_4$ a unique system on the borderline between Fermi liquid and nFl physics.

On the Coexistence Magnetism/Superconductivity in the Heavy-Fermion Superconductor CePt$_3$Si

The interplay between magnetism and superconductivity in the newly discovered heavy-fermion superconductor CePt$_3$Si has been investigated using the zero-field $μ$SR technique. The $μ$SR data indicate that the whole muon ensemble senses spontaneous internal fields in the magnetic phase, demonstrating that magnetism occurs in the whole sample volume. This points to a microscopic coexistence between magnetism and heavy-fermion superconductivity.

Effect of hydrostatic pressure on the ambient pressure superconductor CePt_3Si

We studied the evolution of superconductivity (sc) and antiferromagnetism (afm) in the heavy fermion compound CePt_3Si with hydrostatic pressure. We present a pressure-temperature phase diagram established by electrical transport measurements. Pressure shifts the superconducting transition temperature, T_c, to lower temperatures. Antiferromagnetism is suppressed at a critical pressure P_c=0.5 GPa.

Unconventional superconductivity and magnetism in $\rm CePt_3Si_{1-x}Ge_x$

$\rm CePt_3Si$ is a novel ternary compound exhibiting antiferromagnetic order at $T_N \approx 2.2$ K and superconductivity (SC) at $T_c \approx 0.75$ K. Large values of $H_{c2}' \approx -8.5$ T/K and $H_{c2}(0) \approx 5$ T indicate Cooper pairs formed out of heavy quasiparticles. The mass enhancement originates from Kondo interaction with a characteristic temperature $T_K \approx 8$ K. NMR and $μ$SR measurements evidence coexistence of SC and long range magnetic order on a microscopic scale. Moreover, $\rm CePt_3Si$ is the first heavy fermion SC without an inversion symmetry. This gives rise to a novel type of the NMR relaxation rate $1/T_1$ which is very unique and never reported before for other heavy fermion superconductors. Studies of Si/Ge substitution allow us to establish a phase diagram.

Intermediate valence behavior in CeCo9Si4

The novel ternary compound CeCo$_9$Si$_4$ has been studied by means of specific heat, magnetisation, and transport measurements. Single crystal X-ray Rietveld refinements reveal a fully ordered distribution of Ce, Co and Si atoms with the tetragonal space group I4/mcm isostructural with other RCo9Si4. The smaller lattice constants of CeCo9Si4 in comparison with the trend established by other RCo9Si4 is indicative for intermediate valence of cerium. While RCo9Si4 with R= Pr, .. Tb, and Y show ferromagnetism and LaCo9Si4 is nearly ferromagnetic, CeCo9Si4 remains paramagnetic even in external fields as large as 40 T, though its electronic specific heat coefficient (g~190 mJ/molK^2) is of similar magnitude as that of metamagnetic LaCo9Si4 and weakly ferromagnetic YCo9Si4.

Weak itinerant ferromagnetism in YCo9Si4

Weak itinerant ferromagnetism in YCo9Si4 below about 25 K is studied by means of magnetisation, specific heat, and resistivity measurements. Single crystal X-ray Rietveld refinements at room temperature reveal a fully ordered distribution of Y, Co and Si atoms within the tetragonal space group I4/mcm isostructural with LaCo9Si4. The latter exhibits itinerant electron metamagnetism with an induced moment of about 1 mu_B/f.u. above 6 T, whereas YCo9Si4 exhibits a spontaneous magnetisation M0~12 Am^2/kg at 2 K which corresponds to an ordered moment of about 1.6 mu_B/f.u. indicating weak itinerant ferromagnetism.

Evidence for a Novel State of Superconductivity in Noncentrosymmetric CePt3Si : A 195Pt-NMR Study

We report on novel antiferromagnetic (AFM) and superconducting (SC) properties of noncentrosymmetric CePt3Si through measurements of the 195Pt nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1. In the normal state, the temperature (T) dependence of 1/T1 unraveled the existence of low-lying levels in crystal-electric-field multiplets and the formation of a heavy fermion (HF) state. The coexistence of AFM and SC phases, that emerge at TN = 2.2 K and Tc = 0.75 K, respectively, takes place on a microscopic level. CePt3Si is the first HF superconductor that reveals a peak in 1/T1 just below Tc and, additionally, does not follow the T^3 law that used to be reported for most unconventional HF superconductors. We remark that this unexpected SC characteristics may be related with the lack of an inversion center in its crystal structure.
