Neutrino induced coherent pion production

We discuss different parameterizations of the $C_5^A(q^2)$ $NΔ$ axial form factor, fitted to the old Argonne bubble chamber data for pion production by neutrinos, and we use coherent pion production to test their low $q^2$ behavior. We find moderate effects that will be difficult to observe with the accuracy of present experiments. We also discuss the use of the Rein-Sehgal model for low energy coherent pion production. By comparison to a microscopic calculation, we show the weaknesses of some of the approximations in that model that lead to very large cross sections as well as to the wrong shapes for differential ones. Finally we show that models based on the partial conservation of the axial current hypothesis are not fully reliable for differential cross sections that depend on the angle formed by the pion and the incident neutrino.

The role of hyperfine mixing in $b\to c$ semileptonic decays of doubly-heavy baryons

We analyze the effects of hyperfine mixing in $b \to c$ semileptonic decays of doubly heavy baryons. We qualitatively confirm the results by W. Roberts and M. Pervin in Int. J. Mod. Phys. A, 2009, {\bf 24}: 2401-2413, finding that mixing has a great impact on those transitions. However, predictions without mixing differ by a factor of 2 and this discrepancy translates to the mixed case where large differences in decay widths are observed between the two calculations.

Hyperfine mixing in $b\to c$ semileptonic decay of doubly heavy baryons

We qualitatively corroborate the results of W. Roberts and M. Pervin in Int. J. Mod. Phys. A 24, 2401 (2009) according to which hyperfine mixing greatly affects the decay widths of $b\to c$ semileptonic decays involving doubly heavy $bc$ baryons. However, our predictions for the decay widths of the unmixed states differ from those reported in the work of Roberts and Pervin by a factor of 2, and this discrepancy translates to the mixed case. We further show that the predictions of heavy quark spin symmetry, might be used in the future to experimentally extract information on the admixtures in the actual physical $bc$ baryons, in a model independent manner.

Neutrino induced weak pion production off the nucleon and coherent pion production in nuclei at low energies

We present a microscopic model for neutrino induced one-pion production off the nucleon and its implementation for the purpose of calculating coherent pion production in nuclei. We further criticize the use of the Rein--Sehgal model for coherent pion production by low energy neutrinos. In particular, we show how the approximations in that model give rise to a much flatter differential cross section in the $η=E_π(1-\cosθ_π)$ variable. We discuss the limitations intrinsic to any approach based on the partial conservation of the axial current hypothesis and the inability of such models to properly determine the angular distribution of the outgoing pion with respect to the direction of the incoming neutrino. We show the effects of those limitation for the case of the $\frac{dσ}{dη}$ differential cross section.

Neutrino Induced Coherent Pion Production off Nuclei and PCAC

We review the Rein--Sehgal model and criticize its use for low energy neutrino induced coherent pion production. We have studied the validity of the main approximations implicit in that model, trying to compare with physical observables when that is possible and with microscopical calculations. Next, we have tried to elaborate a new improved model by removing the more problematic approximations, while keeping the model still reasonably simple. Last, we have discussed the limitations intrinsic to any approach based on the partial conservation of the axial current hypothesis. In particular, we have shown the inability of such models to determine the angular distribution of the outgoing pion with respect to the direction of the incoming neutrino, except for the $q^2= 0$ kinematical point.

Theoretical study of neutrino-induced coherent pion production off nuclei at T2K and MiniBooNE energies

We have developed a model for neutrino-induced coherent pion production off nuclei in the energy regime of interest for present and forthcoming neutrino oscillation experiments. It is based on a microscopic model for pion production off the nucleon that, besides the dominant Delta pole contribution, takes into account the effect of background terms required by chiral symmetry. Moreover, the model uses a reduced nucleon-to-Delta resonance axial coupling, which leads to coherent pion production cross sections around a factor two smaller than most of the previous theoretical estimates. In the coherent production, the main nuclear effects, namely medium corrections on the Delta propagator and the final pion distortion, are included. We have improved on previous similar models by taking into account the nucleon motion and employing a more sophisticated optical potential. As found in previous calculations the modification of the Delta self-energy inside the nuclear medium strongly reduces the cross section, while the final pion distortion mainly shifts the peak position to lower pion energies. The angular distribution profiles are not much affected by nuclear effects. Nucleon motion increases the cross section by 15% at neutrino energies of 650 MeV, while Coulomb effects on charged pions are estimated to be small. Finally, we discuss at length the deficiencies of the Rein-Sehgal pion coherent production model for neutrino energies below 2 GeV, and in particular for the MiniBooNE and T2K experiments. We also predict flux averaged cross sections for these two latter experiments and K2K.

Test of the heavy quark-light diquark approximation for baryons with a heavy quark

We check a commonly used approximation in which a baryon with a heavy quark is described as a heavy quark-light diquark system. The heavy quark influences the diquark internal motion reducing the average distance between the two light quarks. Besides, we show how the average distance between the heavy quark and any of the light quarks, and that between the heavy quark and the center of mass of the light diquark, are smaller than the distance between the two light quarks, which seems to contradict the heavy quark-light diquark picture. This latter result is in agreement with expectations from QCD sum rules and lattice QCD calculations. Our results also show that the diquark approximations produces larger masses than the ones obtained in a full calculation.

Production of Two Pions Induced by Neutrinos

We study the threshold production of two pions induced by neutrinos in nucleon targets. The contribution of nucleon pole, pion and contact terms is calculated using a chiral Lagrangian. The contribution of the Roper resonance, neglected in earlier studies, has also been taken into account.

Masses and semileptonic decays of doubly heavy baryons in a nonrelativistic quark model

We evaluate masses and semileptonic decay widths for the ground state of doubly heavy $Ξ$ and $Ω$ baryons in the framework of a nonrelativistic quark model. We solve the three-body problem by means of a variational ansatz made possible by heavy-quark spin symmetry constraints. Our masses are comparable to the ones obtained in relativistic calculations and we get one of the best agreements with lattice data. Our simple wave functions are used to evaluate semileptonic decays of doubly heavy $Ξ, Ξ'(J=1/2)$ and $Ω, Ω'(J=1/2)$ baryons. Our results for the decay widths are in reasonable agreement with calculations done in a relativistic calculation in the quark-diquark approximation. We also check that our wave functions comply with what it is expected in the infinite heavy quark mass limit.

Semileptonic $B\to π$ Decays from an Omnès Improved Nonrelativistic Constituent Quark Model

The semileptonic $B\to πl^+ ν_l$ decay is studied starting from a simple quark model which includes the influence of the $B^*$ pole. To extend the predictions of a nonrelativistic constituent quark model from its region of applicability near $q^2_{\rm max}=(m_B-m_π)^2$ to all $q^2$ values accessible in the physical decay, we use a novel multiply-subtracted Omnès dispersion relation, which considerably diminishes the form factor dependence on the elastic $πB \to πB$ scattering amplitudes at high energies. By comparison to the experimental branching fraction we extract $|V_{ub}| = 0.0034 \pm 0.0003 ({\rm exp}) \pm 0.0007 ({\rm theory})$. To further test our framework, we also study $D\to π$ and $D\to K$ decays and find excellent results $\frac{f^+_π(0)}{f^+_K(0)} = 0.80 \pm 0.03, \quad \frac{{\cal B}(D^0\to π^- e^+ ν_e)}{{\cal B}(D^0\to K^- e^+ ν_e)}= 0.079 \pm 0.008$. In particular for the $D\to π$ case, we reproduce, with high accuracy, the three-flavor lattice QCD results recently obtained by the Fermilab-MILC-HPQCD Collaboration. While for the $D\to K$ case, we successfully describe the data for $f^+(q^2)/f^+(0)$ recently measured by the FOCUS Collaboration.

Study of the leptonic decays of pseudoscalar $B, D$ and vector $B^*, D^*$ mesons and of the semileptonic $B\to D$ and $B\to D^*$ decays

We present results for different observables in weak decays of pseudoscalar and vector mesons with a heavy $c$ or $b$ quark. The calculations are done in a nonrelativistic constituent quark model improved at some instances by heavy quark effective theory constraints. We determine pseudoscalar and vector meson decay constants that within a few per cent satisfy $f_V M_V/f_P M_P=1$, a result expected in heavy quark symmetry when the heavy quark masses tend to infinity. We also analyze the semileptonic $B\to D$ and $B\to D^*$ decays for which we evaluate the different form factors. Here we impose heavy quark effective theory constraints among form factors that are not satisfied by a direct quark model calculation. The value of the form factors at zero recoil allows us to determine, by comparison with experimental data, the value of the $|V_{cb}|$ Cabbibo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element. From the $B\to D$ semileptonic decay we get $|V_{cb}|=0.040\pm0.006$ in perfect agreement with our previous determination based on the study of the semileptonic $Λ_b\to Λ_c$ decay and also in excellent agreement with a recent experimental determination by the DELPHI Collaboration. We further make use of the partial conservation of axial current hypothesis to determine the strong coupling constants $g_{B^*Bπ}(0)=60.5\pm 1.1$ and $g_{D^*Dπ}(0)=22.1\pm0.4$. The ratio $R=(g_{B^*Bπ}(0) f_{B^*}\sqrt{M_D})/ (g_{D^*Dπ}(0) f_{D^*}\sqrt{M_B})=1.105\pm0.005$ agrees with the heavy quark symmetry prediction of 1.

Partial conservation of the axial current and axial exchange currents in the nucleon

We discuss the axial form factors of the nucleon within the context of the nonrelativistic chiral quark model. Partial conservation of the axial current (PCAC) imposed at the quark operator level enforces an axial coupling for the constituent quarks which is smaller than unity. This leads to an axial coupling constant of the nucleon $g_A$ in good agreement with experiment. PCAC also requires the inclusion of axial exchange currents. Their effects on the axial form factors are analyzed. We find only small exchange current contributions to $g_A$, which is dominated by the one-body axial current. On the other hand, axial exchange currents give sizeable contributions to the axial radius of the nucleon $r_A^2$, and to the non-pole part of the induced pseudoscalar form factor $g_P$. For the latter, the confinement exchange current is the dominant term.

The two pion decay of the Roper resonance

We evaluate the two pion decay of the Roper resonance in a model where explicit re-scattering of the two final pions is accounted for by the use of unitarized chiral perturbation theory. Our model does not include an explicit $ε$ or $σ$ scalar-isoscalar meson decay mode, instead it generates it dynamically by means of the pion re-scattering. The two ways, explicit or dynamically generated, of introducing this decay channel have very different amplitudes. Nevertheless, through interference with the other terms of the model we are able to reproduce the same phenomenology as models with explicit consideration of the $ε$ meson.

Recent Developments in one and two Pion Production in Elementary Reactions and Few Body Systems

In this talk we cover several issues concerning pion production. The first one is the p p ----> p p pi^0 reaction where an alternative explanation based on the off shell extrapolation of the pi N amplitude is offered. A recent model for the gamma N ----> pi pi N reaction is presented and a new kind of exchange current is constructed from it which allows one to address problems like double Delta photoproduction from the deuteron. Finally the (gamma, pi pi) reaction in nuclei is studied and shown to be highly sensitive to the renormalization of the pions in nuclei.
