Geometry and Harmonic Superspace: some recent progress

This contribution follows the talk, given by F. Delduc at the conference SQS'2011 in Dubna, Russia (July 18-23, 2011). To a considerable extent it is a summary of known facts about the links between geometry and extended supersymmetry in d=1 mechanics, with emphasis on the harmonic superspace method created in Dubna in the 80's. Some recent developments based on ref. [1] are also presented.

Worldsheet Supersymmetry of Pohlmeyer-Reduced AdS_n x S^n Superstrings

As was observed by Grigoriev and Tseytlin, the Pohlmeyer-reduced AdS_2 x S^2 superstring theory possesses N=(2,2) worldsheet supersymmetry. We show, at the classical level, that the AdS_3 x S^3 and AdS_5 x S^5 superstring theories in the Pohlmeyer-reduced form reveal hidden N=(4,4) and N=(8,8) worldsheet supersymmetries. Our consideration is based on the modified mass-deformed gauged WZW action for the superstring equations. We present the explicit form of the supersymmetry transformations for both the off-shell action and the superstring equations. The characteristic feature of these transformations is the presence of non-local terms.

N = 4 mechanics of general (4, 4, 0) multiplets

We construct the manifestly N=4 supersymmetric off-shell superfield "master" action for any number n of the N=4 supermultiplets (4, 4, 0) described by harmonic analytic superfields q^{+a}(ζ, u), a= 1, ... 2n, subjected to the most general harmonic constraints. The action consists of the sigma-model and Wess-Zumino parts. We present the general expressions for the target space metric, torsion and background gauge fields. The generic target space geometry is shown to be weak HKT (hyper-Kähler with torsion), with the strong HKT and HK ones as particular cases. The background gauge fields obey the self-duality condition. Our formulation suggests that the weak HKT geometry is fully specified by the two primary potentials: an unconstrained scalar potential {\cal L}(q^+, q^-, u)|_{θ= 0} which is the θ= 0 projection of the superfield sigma-model Lagrangian, and a charge 3 harmonic analytic potential {\cal L}^{+ 3a}(q^+, u)|_{θ= 0} coming from the harmonic constraint on q^{+ a}. The reductions to the strong HKT and HK geometries amount to simple restrictions on the underlying potentials. We also show, using the N=2 superfield approach, that the most general bosonic target geometry of the N=4, d=1 sigma models, of which the weak HKT geometry is a particular case, naturally comes out after adding the mirror (4, 4, 0) multiplets with different transformation laws under N=4 supersymmetry and SO(4) R symmetry. Thus the minimal dimension of the target spaces exhibiting such a "weakest" geometry is 8, which corresponds to a pair of the mutually mirror (4, 4, 0) multiplets.

Biharmonic Superspace for N=4 Mechanics

We develop a new superfield approach to N=4 supersymmetric mechanics based on the concept of biharmonic superspace (bi-HSS). It is an extension of the N=4,d=1 superspace by two sets of harmonic variables associated with the two SU(2) factors of the R-symmetry group SO(4) of the N=4, d=1 super Poincaré algebra. There are three analytic subspaces in it: two of the Grassmann dimension 2 and one of the dimension 3. They are closed under the infinite-dimensional "large" N=4 superconformal group, as well as under the finite-dimensional superconformal group D(2,1;α). The main advantage of the bi-HSS approach is that it gives an opportunity to treat N=4 supermultiplets with finite numbers of off-shell components on equal footing with their ``mirror'' counterparts. We show how such multiplets and their superconformal properties are described in this approach. We also define nonpropagating gauge multiplets which can be used to gauge various isometries of the bi-HSS actions. We present an example of nontrivial N=4 mechanics model with a seven-dimensional target manifold obtained by gauging an U(1) isometry in a sum of the free actions of the multiplet (4,4,0) and its mirror counterpart.

Gauging isometries in N=4 supersymmetric mechanics

This talk summarizes the study of superfield gaugings of isometries of extended supersymmetric mechanics in hep-th/0605211, hep-th/0611247 and arXiv:0706.0706. The gauging procedure provides a manifestly supersymmetric realization of d=1 automorphic dualities which interrelate various irreducible off-shell multiplets of d=1 extended supersymmetry featuring the same number of physical fermions but different divisions of bosonic fields into the physical and auxiliary subsets. We concentrate on the most interesting N=4 case and demonstrate that, with a suitable choice of the symmetry to be gauged, all such multiplets of N=4 supersymmetric mechanics and their generic superfield actions can be obtained from the "root" multiplet (4,4,0) and the appropriate gauged subclasses of the generic superfield action of the latter by a simple universal recipe.

The Common Origin of Linear and Nonlinear Chiral Multiplets in N=4 Mechanics

Elaborating on previous work (hep-th/0605211, hep-th/0611247), we show how the linear and nonlinear chiral multiplets of N=4 supersymmetric mechanics with the off-shell content (2,4,2) can be obtained by gauging three distinct two-parameter isometries of the ``root'' (4,4,0) multiplet actions. In particular, two different gauge groups, one abelian and one non-abelian, lead, albeit in a disguised form in the second case, to the same (unique) nonlinear chiral multiplet. This provides an evidence that no other nonlinear chiral N=4 multiplets exist. General sigma model type actions are discussed, together with the restricted potential terms coming from the Fayet-Iliopoulos terms associated with abelian gauge superfields. As in our previous work, we use the manifestly supersymmetric language of N=4, d=1 harmonic superspace. A novel point is the necessity to use in parallel the λand τgauge frames, with the ``bridges'' between these two frames playing a crucial role. It is the N=4 harmonic analyticity which, though being non-manifest in the τframe, gives rise to both linear and nonlinear chirality constraints.

New Model of N=8 Superconformal Mechanics

Using an N=4, d=1 superfield approach, we construct an N=8 supersymmetric action of the self-interacting off-shell N=8 multiplet {\bf (1, 8, 7)}. This action is found to be invariant under the exceptional N=8, d=1 superconformal group F(4) with the R-symmetry subgroup SO(7). The general N=8 supersymmetric {\bf (1, 8, 7)} action is a sum of the superconformal action and the previously known free bilinear action. We show that the general action is also superconformal, but with respect to redefined superfield transformation laws. The scalar potential can be generated by two Fayet-Iliopoulos N=4 superfield terms which preserve N=8 supersymmetry but break the superconformal and SO(7) symmetries.

Gauging N=4 supersymmetric mechanics II: (1,4,3) models from the (4,4,0) ones

Exploiting the gauging procedure developed by us in hep-th/0605211, we study the relationships between the models of N=4 mechanics based on the off-shell multiplets (4,4,0) and (1,4,3). We make use of the off-shell N=4, d=1 harmonic superspace approach as most adequate for treating this circle of problems. We show that the most general sigma-model type superfield action of the multiplet (1,4,3) can be obtained in a few non-equivalent ways from the (4,4,0) actions invariant under certain three-parameter symmetries, through gauging the latter by the appropriate non-propagating gauge multiplets. We discuss in detail the gauging of both the Pauli-Gursey SU(2) symmetry and the abelian three-generator shift symmetry. We reveal the (4,4,0) origin of the known mechanisms of generating potential terms for the multiplet (1,4,3), as well as of its superconformal properties. A new description of this multiplet in terms of unconstrained harmonic analytic gauge superfield is proposed. It suggests, in particular, a novel mechanism of generating the (1,4,3) potential terms via coupling to the fermionic off-shell N=4 multiplet (0,4,4).

Gauging N=4 Supersymmetric Mechanics

We argue that off-shell dualities between d=1 supermultiplets with different sets of physical bosonic components and the same number of fermionic ones are related to gauging some symmetries in the actions of the supermultiplets with maximal sets of physical bosons. Our gauging procedure uses off-shell superfields and so is manifestly supersymmetric. We focus on N=4 supersymmetric mechanics and show that various actions of the multiplet (3,4,1) amount to some gauge choices in the gauged superfield actions of the linear or nonlinear (4,4,0) multiplets. In particular, the conformally invariant (3,4,1) superpotential is generated by the Fayet-Iliopoulos term of the gauge superfield. We find a new nonlinear variant of the multiplet (4,4,0), such that its simplest superfield action produces the most general 4-dim hyper-Kähler metric with one triholomorphic isometry as the bosonic target metric. We also elaborate on some other instructive examples of N=4 superfield gaugings, including a non-abelian gauging which relates the free linear (4,4,0) multiplet to a self-interacting (1,4,3) multiplet.

Massless higher spin D=4 superparticle with both N=1 supersymmetry and its bosonic counterpart

We show that the massless higher spin four-dimensional particle model with bosonic counterpart of N=1 supersymmetry respects SU(3,2) invariance. We extend this particle model to a superparticle possessing $SU(3,2|1)$ supersymmetry which is a closure of standard four-dimensional N=1 superconformal symmetry $SU(2,2|1)$ and its bosonic SU(3,2) counterpart. The new massless higher spin D=4 superparticle model describes trajectories in Minkowski superspace $(x^μ, θ^α, \barθ^{\dotα})$ extended by the commuting Weyl spinor $ζ^α$, $\barζ^{\dotα}=(ζ^α)^\ast$. We find the relevant phase space constraints and quantize the model. As a result of quantization we obtain the superwave function which describes an infinite sequence of four-dimensional massless chiral superfields with arbitrary external helicity indices.

Non-singlet Q-deformations of N=2 gauge theories

We study a non-anticommutative chiral non-singlet deformation of the N=(1,1) abelian gauge multiplet in Euclidean harmonic superspace. We present a closed form of the gauge transformations and the unbroken N =(1,0) supersymmetry transformations preserving the Wess-Zumino gauge, as well as the bosonic sector of the N =(1,0) invariant action. This contribution is a summary of our main results in hep-th/0510013.

Non-singlet Q-deformation of the N=(1,1) gauge multiplet in harmonic superspace

We study a non-anticommutative chiral non-singlet deformation of the N=(1,1) abelian gauge multiplet in Euclidean harmonic superspace with a product ansatz for the deformation matrix, C^{(αβ)}_{(ik)} = c^{(αβ)}b_{(ik)}. This allows us to obtain in closed form the gauge transformations and the unbroken N=(1,0) supersymmetry transformations preserving the Wess-Zumino gauge, as well as the bosonic sector of the N=(1,0) invariant action. As in the case of a singlet deformation, the bosonic action can be cast in a form where it differs from the free action merely by a scalar factor. The latter is now given by \cosh^2 (2\barϕ\sqrt{c^2 b^2}}), with \barϕbeing one of two scalar fields of the N=(1,1) vector multiplet. We compare our results with previous studies of non-singlet deformations, including the degenerate case b^2=0 which preserves the N=(1,1/2) fraction of N=(1,1) supersymmetry.

N=8 Mechanics in SU(2)xSU(2) Harmonic Superspace

The ${\cal N}{=}8, 1D$ analytic bi-harmonic superspace is shown to provide a natural setting for ${\cal N}{=}8$ supersymmetric mechanics associated with the off-shell multiplet ${\bf (4, 8, 4)}$ . The latter is described by an analytic superfield $q^{1,1}$, and we construct the general superfield and component actions for any number of such multiplets. The set of transformations preserving the flat superspace constraints on $q^{1,1}$ constitutes ${\cal N}{=}8$ extension of the two-dimensional Heisenberg algebra {\bf h}(2), with an operator central charge. The corresponding invariant $q^{1,1}$ action is constructed. It is unique and breaks 1D scale invariance. We also find a one-parameter family of scale-invariant $q^{1,1}$ actions which, however, are not invariant under the full ${\cal N}{=}8$ Heisenberg supergroup. Based on preserving the bi-harmonic Grassmann analyticity, we formulate ${\cal N}{=}8, 1D$ supergravity in terms of the appropriate analytic supervielbeins. For its truncated version we construct, both at the superfield and component levels, the first example of off-shell $q^{1,1}$ action with local ${\cal N}{=}8, 1D$ supersymmetry. This construction can be generalized to any number of self-interacting $q^{1,1}$ .

Non-anticommutative chiral singlet deformation of N=(1,1) gauge theory

We study the SO(4)x SU(2) invariant Q-deformation of Euclidean N=(1,1) gauge theories in the harmonic superspace formulation. This deformation preserves chirality and Grassmann harmonic analyticity but breaks N=(1,1) to N=(1,0) supersymmetry. The action of the deformed gauge theory is an integral over the chiral superspace, and only the purely chiral part of the covariant superfield strength contributes to it. We give the component form of the N=(1,0) supersymmetric action for the gauge groups U(1) and U(n>1). In the U(1) and U(2) cases, we find the explicit nonlinear field redefinition (Seiberg-Witten map) relating the deformed N=(1,1) gauge multiplet to the undeformed one. This map exists in the general U(n) case as well, and we use this fact to argue that the deformed U(n) gauge theory can be nonlinearly reduced to a theory with the gauge group SU(n).

Diverse ${\cal N} =(4,4)$ Twisted Multiplets in ${\cal N} = (2,2)$ Superspace

We describe four different types of the ${\cal N} = (4,4)$ twisted supermultiplets in two-dimensional ${\cal N} = (2,2)$ superspace ${\bf R}^{1,1|2,2}$. All these multiplets are presented by a pair of chiral and twisted chiral superfields and differ in the transformation properties under an extra hidden ${\cal N} = (2,2)$ supersymmetry. The sigma model ${\cal N} = (2,2)$ superfield Lagrangians for each type of the ${\cal N} = (4,4)$ twisted supermultiplets are real functions subjected to some differential constraints implied by the hidden supersymmetry. We prove that the general sigma model action, with all types of ${\cal N} = (4,4)$ twisted multiplets originally included, is reduced to a sum of sigma model actions for separate types. An interaction between the multiplets of different sorts is possible only through the appropriate mass terms, and only for those multiplets which belong to the same `self-dual' pair.

ABC of N=8, d=1 supermultiplets

We construct a variety of off-shell $N{=}8, d{=}1$ supermultiplets with finite numbers of component fields as direct sums of properly constrained $N{=}4, d{=}1$ superfields. We also show how these multiplets can be described in $N{=}8, d{=}1$ superspace where the whole amount of supersymmetry is manifest. Some of these multiplets can be obtained by dimensional reduction {}from $N{=}2$ multiplets in $d{=}4$, whereas others cannot. We give examples of invariant superfield actions for the multiplets constructed, including $N{=}8$ superconformally invariant ones.
