Bright and dark solitary waves in a one-dimensional spin-polarized gas of fermionic atoms with p-wave interactions in a hard-wall trap

In this paper we elucidate the physics underlying the fact that both bright and dark solitary waves can arise in a one-dimensional spin-polarized gas of fermionic atoms with attractive three-dimensional p-wave interactions in a hard-wall trap. This is possible since the one-dimensional fermion system can be mapped to a system of bosons described by the Lieb-Liniger model with either repulsive or attractive delta-function interactions which can support solitary waves.

Rotating ground states of a one-dimensional spin-polarized gas of fermionic atoms with attractive p-wave interactions on a mesoscopic ring

The major finding of this paper is that a one-dimensional spin-polarized gas comprised of an even number of fermionic atoms interacting via attractive p-wave interactions and confined to a mesoscopic ring has a degenerate pair of ground states that are oppositely rotating. In any realization the gas will thus spontaneously rotate one way or the other in spite of the fact that there is no external rotation or bias fields. Our goal is to show that this counter-intuitive finding is a natural consequence of the combined effects of quantum statistics, ring topology, and exchange interactions.

Experimental Observation of Modulation Instability and Optical Spatial Soliton Arrays in Soft Condensed Matter

In this Letter we report observations of optically induced self-organization of colloidal arrays in the presence of un-patterned counter-propagating evanescent waves. The colloidal arrays formed along the laser propagation-axis are shown to be linked to the break-up of the incident field into optical spatial solitons, the lateral spacing of the arrays being related to modulation instability of the soft condensed matter system.

Polarization Conversion and "Focusing" of Light Propagating through a Small Chiral Hole in a Metallic Screen

Propagation of light through a thin flat metallic screen containing a hole of twisted shape is sensitive to whether the incident wave is left or right circularly polarized. The transmitted light accrues a component with handedness opposite to the incident wave. The efficiency of polarization conversion depends on the mutual direction of the hole's twist and the incident light's wave polarization handedness and peaks at a wavelength close to the hole overall size. We also observed a strong transmitted field concentration at the center of the chiral hole when the handedness of the chiral hole and the wave's polarization state are the same.

Static and Dynamic Properties of Trapped Fermionic Tonks-Girardeau Gases

We investigate some exact static and dynamic properties of one-dimensional fermionic Tonks-Girardeau gases in tight de Broglie waveguides with attractive p-wave interactions induced by a Feshbach resonance. A closed form solution for the one-body density matrix for harmonic trapping is analyzed in terms of its natural orbitals, with the surprising result that for odd, but not for even, numbers of fermions the maximally occupied natural orbital coincides with the ground harmonic oscillator orbital and has the maximally allowed fermionic occupancy of unity. The exact dynamics of the trapped gas following turnoff of the p-wave interactions are explored.

Photoluminescence and Terahertz Emission from Femtosecond Laser-Induced Plasma Channels

Luminescence as a mechanism for terahertz emission from femtosecond laser-induced plasmas is studied. By using a fully microscopic theory, Coulomb scattering between electrons and ions is shown to lead to luminescence even for a spatially homogeneous plasma. The spectral features introduced by the rod geometry of laser-induced plasma channels in air are discussed on the basis of a generalized mode-function analysis.

Optically bound microscopic particles in one dimension

Counter-propagating light fields have the ability to create self-organized one-dimensional optically bound arrays of microscopic particles, where the light fields adapt to the particle locations and vice versa. We develop a theoretical model to describe this situation and show good agreement with recent experimental data (Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 128301 (2002)) for two and three particles, if the scattering force is assumed to dominate the axial trapping of the particles. The extension of these ideas to two and three dimensional optically bound states is also discussed.

Dynamic Nonlinear X-waves for Femtosecond Pulse Propagation in Water

Recent experiments on femtosecond pulses in water displayed long distance propagation analogous to that reported in air. We verify this phenomena numerically and show that the propagation is dynamic as opposed to self-guided. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the propagation can be interpreted as due to dynamic nonlinear X-waves whose robustness and role in long distance propagation is shown to follow from the interplay between nonlinearity and chromatic dispersion.

Atomic-phase interference devices based on ring-shaped Bose-Einstein condensates: Two ring case

We theoretically investigate the ground-state properties and quantum dynamics of a pair of adjacent ring-shaped Bose-Einstein condensates that are coupled via tunneling. This device, which is the analogue of a symmetric superconducting quantum interference device, is the simplest version of what we term an Atomic-Phase Interference Device (APHID). The two-ring APHID is shown to be sensitive to rotation.

Two-fermion bound state in a Bose-Einstein condensate

A nonlinear Schrödinger equation is derived for the dynamics of a beam of ultracold fermionic atoms traversing a Bose-Einstein condensate. The condensate phonon modes are shown to provide a nonlinear medium for the fermionic atoms. A two-fermion bound state is predicted to arise, and the signature of the bound state in a nonlinear atom optics experiment is discussed.

Interference of a thermal Tonks gas on a ring

A nonzero temperature generalization of the Fermi-Bose mapping theorem is used to study the exact quantum statistical dynamics of a one-dimensional gas of impenetrable bosons on a ring. We investigate the interference produced when an initially trapped gas localized on one side of the ring is released, split via an optical-dipole grating, and recombined on the other side of the ring. Nonzero temperature is shown not to be a limitation to obtaining high visibility fringes.

Crossover from one to three dimensions for a gas of hard-core bosons

We develop a variational theory of the crossover from the one-dimensional (1D) regime to the 3D regime for ultra-cold Bose gases in thin waveguides. Within the 1D regime we map out the parameter space for fermionization, which may span the full 1D regime for suitable transverse confinement.

Bose-Fermi variational theory of the BEC-Tonks crossover

A number-conserving hybrid Bose-Fermi variational theory is developed and applied to investigation of the BEC-Tonks gas crossover in toroidal and long cylindrical traps of high aspect ratio, where strong many-body correlations and condensate depletion occur.

Generation of electromagnetic pulses from plasma channels induced by femtosecond light strings

We present a model that elucidates the physics underlying the generation of an electromagnetic pulse from a femtosecond laser induced plasma channel. The radiation pressure force from the laser pulse spatially separates the ionized electrons from the heavier ions and the induced dipole moment subsequently oscillates at the plasma frequency and radiates an electromagnetic pulse.

Quantum mechanics of one-dimensional trapped Tonks gases

Several experimental groups are currently working towards realizing quasi-one-dimensional (1D) atom waveguides and loading them with ultracold atoms. The dynamics becomes truly 1D in a regime (Tonks gas) of low temperatures and densities and large positive scattering lengths for which the transverse mode becomes frozen, in which case the many-body Schrodinger dynamics becomes exactly soluble via a Fermi-Bose mapping theorem. In this paper we review our recent work on the exact ground state and quantum dynamics of 1D Tonks gases and assess the possibility of approaching the Tonks regime using Bessel beam optical dipole traps.

Optical dipole traps and atomic waveguides based on Bessel light beams

We theoretically investigate the use of Bessel light beams generated using axicons for creating optical dipole traps for cold atoms and atomic waveguiding. Zeroth-order Bessel beams can be used to produce highly elongated dipole traps allowing for the study of one-dimensional trapped gases and realization of a Tonks gas of impentrable bosons. First-order Bessel beams are shown to be able to produce tight confined atomic waveguides over centimeter distances.

Polarization dynamics of femtosecond pulses propagating in air

Polarization dynamics of femtosecond light pulses propagating in air is studied by computer simulation. A rich variety of dynamics is found that depends on the initial polarization state and power of the pulse. Effects of polarization on the plasma and supercontinuum generation are also discussed.

Measurement of one-particle correlations and momentum distributions for trapped 1D gases

van Hove's theory of scattering of probe particles by a macroscopic target is generalized so as to relate the differential cross section for atomic ejection via stimulated Raman transitions to one-particle momentum-time correlations and momentum distributions of 1D trapped gases. This method is well suited to probing the longitudinal momentum distributions of 1D gases in situ, and examples are given for bosonic and fermionic atoms.
