Comment on "Strongly interacting one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates in harmonic traps"

A recent paper of Tanatar and Erkan [Phys. Rev. A 62, 053601 (2000)] discusses a density functional approach to the impenetrable point Bose gas in one dimension and an equation for the order parameter of the system, due originally to Kolomeisky et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 1146 (2000)], is derived. We comment on the regime of validity of such a model and on qualitative differences between predictions of the density functional approach and known exact results.

Atomic Solitons in Optical Lattices

The experimental demonstration of Bose-Einstein condensation in atomic vapors has rapidly lead to new advances in atom optics. It is now well established that two-body collisions play for matter waves a role analogous to that of a Kerr nonlinear crystal in optics. In particular, it is known that the nonlinear Schrödinger equation which describes the condensate supports soliton solutions. For the case of repulsive interactions normally encountered in BEC experiments, the simplest solutions are dark solitons, that is, 'dips' in the density profile of the condensate. However, it is desirable to achieve the dispersionless transport of a spatially localized ensemble of atoms, rather than a 'hole'. In that case, bright solitons are much more interesting although the problem is that large condensates are necessarily associated with repulsive interactions, for which bright solitons might seem impossible. While this is true for atoms in free space, this is however not the case for atoms in suitable potentials, eg. optical lattices. This result is known from nonlinear optics, where such soliton solutions, called gap solitons, have been predicted and demonstrated. We will briefly review the basic formalism for nonlinear atom optics and summarize various soliton solutions and then describe a specific model for gap solitons in a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate.

Toroidal optical dipole traps for atomic Bose-Einstein condensates using Laguerre-Gaussian beams

We theoretically investigate the use of red-detuned Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) laser beams of varying azimuthal mode index for producing toroidal optical dipole traps in two-dimensional atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. Higher-order LG beams provide deeper potential wells and tighter confinement for a fixed toroid radius and laser power. Numerical simulations of the loading of the toroidal trap from a variety of initial conditions is also given.

Ground state properties of a one-dimensional condensate of hard core bosons in a harmonic trap

The exact N-particle ground state wave function for a one-dimensional condensate of hard core bosons in a harmonic trap is employed to obtain accurate numerical results for the one-particle density matrix, occupation number distribution of the natural orbitals, and momentum distribution. Our results show that the occupation of the lowest orbital varies as N^{0.59}, in contrast to N^{0.5} for a spatially uniform system, and N for a true BEC.

Magneto-optical control of bright atomic solitons

In previous work we showed that bright atomic solitons can arise in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates in the form of gap solitons even for repulsive many-body interactions. Here we further explore the properties of atomic gap solitons and show that their internal structure can be used to both excite them and control their center-of-mass motion using applied laser and magnetic fields. As an illustration we demonstrate a nonlinear atom-optical Mach-Zehnder interferometer based on gap solitons.

Creation of gap solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates

We discuss a method to launch gap soliton-like structures in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates confined in optical traps. Bright vector solitons consisting of a superposition of two hyperfine Zeeman sublevels can be created for both attractive and repulsive interactions between the atoms. Their formation relies on the dynamics of the atomic internal ground states in two far-off resonant counterpropagating sigma^+ sigma^- polarized laser beams which form the optical trap. Numerical simulations show that these solitons can be prepared from a one-component state provided with an initial velocity.

On the detection of condensate vortex states

We discuss a detection scheme that reveals the existence of vortex states in a cylindrically symmetric condensate trap. It relies on the measurement of the second-order correlation function of the Schrödinger field, and yields directly the topological charge of the vortex state.

Dressed Bose-Einstein Condensates in High-Q Cavities

We propose and analyze a way in which effective multicomponent condensates can be created inside high-Q multimode cavities. In contrast to the situation involving several atomic species or levels, the coupling between the various components of the dressed condensates is linear. We predict analytically and numerically confirm the onset of instabilities in the quasiparticle excitation spectrum.

Collapses and Revivals of Collective Excitations in Trapped Bose Condensates

We present a quantum theory of low-lying excitations in a trapped Bose condensate with finite particle numbers. We find that even at zero temperature condensate number fluctuations and/or fluctuations of the excitation frequency due to quantum uncertainties of the mode occupation lead to a collapse of the collective modes due to dephasing. Coherent revivals of the collective excitations are predicted on a much longer timescale. Depletion of collective modes due to second-harmonic generation is discussed.

Collapses and revivals in the interference between two Bose-Einstein condensates formed in small atomic samples

We investigate the quantum interference between two Bose-Einstein condensates formed in small atomic samples composed of a few thousand atoms both by imposing Bose broken gauge symmetry from the outset and also using an explicit model of atomic detection. In the former case we show that the macroscopic wave function collapses and revives in time, and we calculate the characteristic times for current experiments. Collapses and revivals are also predicted in the interference between two Bose-Einstein condensates which are initially in Fock states, a relative phase between the condensates being established via atomic detections corresponding to uncertainty in the number difference between them.

Tests of Bose-broken Symmetry in Atomic Bose-Einstein Condensates

We present an elementary model of the collapses and revivals in the visibility of the interference between two atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. We obtain different predictions of the revival times whether we conserve or break atom number conservation from the outset. The validity of Bose-broken symmetry can be tested by observations of these collapses and revivals.
