Gamow-Teller strength distributions in Xe isotopes

The energy distributions of the Gamow-Teller strength are studied for even-even Xe isotopes with mass numbers from 124 to 142. A self-consistent microscopic formalism is used to generate the single particle basis, using a deformed Skyrme Hartree-Fock mean field with pairing correlations in BCS approximation. The Gamow-Teller transitions are obtained within a quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA) approach using a residual spin-isospin interaction in the particle-hole and particle-particle channels. We then discuss the pairing BCS treatment and the determination of the ph and pp residual interaction coupling constants. We study the GT+ and GT- strength distributions for the equilibrium nuclear shapes, which are an essential information for studies of charge-exchange reactions and double-beta processes involving these isotopes.

Superscaling analysis of inclusive electron scattering and its extension to charge-changing neutrino-nucleus cross sections beyond the relativistic Fermi gas approach

Superscaling analyses of inclusive electron scattering from nuclei are extended from the quasielastic processes to the delta excitation region. The calculations of $(e,e^\prime)$ cross sections for the target nucleus $^{12}$C at various incident electron energies are performed using scaling functions $f(ψ^{\prime})$ obtained in approaches going beyond the mean-field approximation, such as the coherent density fluctuation model (CDFM) and the one based on the light-front dynamics (LFD) method. The results are compared with those obtained using the relativistic Fermi gas (RFG) model and the extended RFG model (ERFG). Our method utilizes in an equivalent way both basic nuclear quantities, density and momentum distributions, showing their role for the scaling and superscaling phenomena. The approach is extended to consider scaling function for medium and heavy nuclei with $Z\neq N$ for which the proton and neutron densities are not similar. The asymmetry of the CDFM quasielastic scaling function is introduced, simulating in a phenomenological way the effects which violate the symmetry for $ψ^{\prime}\geq 0$ including the role of the final-state interaction (FSI). The superscaling properties of the electron scattering are used to predict charge-changing neutrino-nucleus cross sections at energies from 1 to 2 GeV. A comparison with the results of the ERFG model is made. The analyses make it possible to gain information about the nucleon correlation effects on both local density and nucleon momentum distributions.

Hints on the quadrupole deformation of the $Δ$(1232)

The E2/M1 ratio (EMR) of the $Δ$(1232) is extracted from the world data in pion photoproduction by means of an Effective Lagrangian Approach (ELA).This quantity has been derived within a crossing symmetric, gauge invariant, and chiral symmetric Lagrangian model which also contains a consistent modern treatment of the $Δ$(1232) resonance. The \textit{bare} s-channel $Δ$(1232) contribution is well isolated and Final State Interactions (FSI) are effectively taken into account fulfilling Watson's theorem. The obtained EMR value, EMR$=(-1.30\pm0.52)$%, is in good agreement with the latest lattice QCD calculations [Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 021601 (2005)] and disagrees with results of current quark model calculations.

Effect of deformation on two-neutrino double beta decay matrix elements

We study the effect of deformation on the two-neutrino double beta decay for ground state to ground state transitions in all the nuclei whose half-lives have been measured. Our theoretical framework is a deformed QRPA based in Woods-Saxon or Hartree-Fock mean fields. We are able to reproduce at the same time the main characteristics of the two single beta branches, as well as the double beta matrix elements. We find a suppression of the double beta matrix element with respect to the spherical case when the parent and daughter nuclei have different deformations.

beta-decay in neutron-deficient Hg, Pb, and Po isotopes

The effect of nuclear deformation on the energy distributions of the Gamow-Teller strength is studied in neutron-deficient Hg, Pb, and Po even isotopes. The theoretical framework is based on a self-consistent deformed Skyrme Hartree-Fock mean field with pairing correlations between like nucleons in BCS approximation and residual spin-isospin interactions treated in the proton-neutron quasiparticle random phase approximation. After a systematic study of the Gamow-Teller strength distributions in the low excitation energy region, relevant for beta-decay, we have identified the best candidates to look for deformation signatures in their beta-decay patterns. beta+ half-lives and total Gamow-Teller strengths B(GT+) and B(GT-) are analyzed as well.

Effective Lagrangian Approach to pion photoproduction from the nucleon

We present a pion photoproduction model on the free nucleon based on an Effective Lagrangian Approach (ELA) which includes the nucleon resonances ($Δ(1232)$, N(1440), N(1520), N(1535), $Δ(1620)$, N(1650), and $Δ(1700)$), in addition to Born and vector meson exchange terms. The model incorporates a new theoretical treatment of spin-3/2 resonances, first introduced by Pascalutsa, avoiding pathologies present in previous models. Other main features of the model are chiral symmetry, gauge invariance, and crossing symmetry. We use the model combined with modern optimization techniques to assess the parameters of the nucleon resonances on the basis of world data on electromagnetic multipoles. We present results for electromagnetic multipoles, differential cross sections, asymmetries, and total cross sections for all one pion photoproduction processes on free nucleons. We find overall agreement with data from threshold up to 1 GeV in laboratory frame.

Scaling Functions and Superscaling in Medium and Heavy Nuclei

The scaling function $f(ψ')$ for medium and heavy nuclei with $Z\neq N$ for which the proton and neutron densities are not similar is constructed within the coherent density fluctuation model (CDFM) as a sum of the proton and neutron scaling functions. The latter are calculated in the cases of $^{62}$Ni, $^{82}$Kr, $^{118}$Sn, and $^{197}$Au nuclei on the basis of the corresponding proton and neutron density distributions which are obtained in deformed self-consistent mean-field Skyrme HF+BCS method. The results are in a reasonable agreement with the empirical data from the inclusive electron scattering from nuclei showing superscaling for negative values of $ψ'$, including those smaller than -1. This is an improvement over the relativistic Fermi gas (RFG) model predictions where $f(ψ')$ becomes abruptly zero for $ψ'\leq -1$. It is also an improvement over the CDFM calculations made in the past for nuclei with $Z\neq N$ assuming that the neutron density is equal to the proton one and using only the phenomenological charge density.

Nuclear shape dependence of Gamow-Teller distributions in neutron-deficient Pb isotopes

We study Gamow-Teller strength distributions in the neutron-deficient even isotopes (184-194)Pb in a search for signatures of deformation. The microscopic formalism used is based on a deformed quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA) approach, which involves a self-consistent quasiparticle deformed Skyrme Hartree-Fock (HF) basis and residual spin-isospin forces in both the particle-hole and particle-particle channels. By analyzing the sensitivity of the Gamow-Teller strength distributions to the various ingredients in the formalism, we conclude that the beta-decay of these isotopes could be a useful tool to look for fingerprints of nuclear deformation.

Charge and matter distributions and form factors of light, medium and heavy neutron-rich nuclei

Results of charge form factors calculations for several unstable neutron-rich isotopes of light, medium and heavy nuclei (He, Li, Ni, Kr, Sn) are presented and compared to those of stable isotopes in the same isotopic chain. For the lighter isotopes (He and Li) the proton and neutron densities are obtained within a microscopic large-scale shell-model, while for heavier ones Ni, Kr and Sn the densities are calculated in deformed self-consistent mean-field Skyrme HF+BCS method. We also compare proton densities to matter densities together with their rms radii and diffuseness parameter values. Whenever possible comparison of form factors, densities and rms radii with available experimental data is also performed. Calculations of form factors are carried out both in plane wave Born approximation (PWBA) and in distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA). These form factors are suggested as predictions for the future experiments on the electron-radioactive beam colliders where the effect of the neutron halo or skin on the proton distributions in exotic nuclei is planned to be studied and thereby the various theoretical models of exotic nuclei will be tested.

Expressions for the number of J=0 pairs in even-even Ti isotopes

We count the number of pairs in the single j-shell model of {44}Ti for various interactions. For a state of total angular momentum I, the wave function can be written in terms of the probability amplitude D(Jp Jn) that the protons couple to Jp and the neutrons to Jn. For I=0 there are three states with (I=0,T=0) and one with (I=0,T=2). The latter is the double analog of {44}Ca. In that case (T=2), the magnitude of D(JJ) is the same as that of a corresponding two-particle fractional parentage coefficient. In counting the number of pairs with an even angular momentum J, we find a new relationship obtained by diagonalizing a unitary nine-j symbol. We are also able to get results for the `no-interaction' case for T=0 states, for which it is found, e.g., that there are less (J=1,T=0) pairs than on the average. Relative to this `no-interaction case', we find for the most realistic interaction used that there is an enhancement of pairs with angular momentum J=0,2,1 and 7, and a depletion for the others. Also considered are interactions in which only the (J=0,T=1) pair state is at lower energy, only the (J=1,T=0) pair state is lowered and where both are equally lowered, as well as the QQ interaction. We are also able to obtain simplified formulae for the number of J=0 pairs for the I=0 states in {46}Ti and {48}Ti by noting that the unique state with isospin |Tz|+2 is orthogonal to all the states with isospin |Tz|.

Half-lives of rp-process waiting point nuclei

We give results of microscopic calculations for the half-lives of various proton-rich nuclei in the mass region A=60-90, which are involved in the astrophysical rp-process, and which are needed as input parameters of numerical simulations in Nuclear Astrophysics. The microscopic formalism consists of a deformed QRPA approach that involves a selfconsistent quasiparticle deformed Skyrme Hartree-Fock basis and residual spin-isospin separable forces in both the particle-hole and particle-particle channels. The strength of the particle-hole residual interaction is chosen to be consistent with the Skyrme effective force and mean field basis, while that of the particle-particle is globally fixed to 0.07 MeV after a judicious choice from comparison to experimental half-lives. We study and discuss the sensitivity of the half-lives to deformation and residual interactions.

Isospin mixing and Fermi transitions: Selfconsistent deformed mean field calculations and beyond

We study Fermi transitions and isospin mixing in an isotopic chain 70-78 Kr considering various approximations that use the same Skyrme-Hartree-Fock single particle basis. We study Coulomb effects as well as the effect of BCS and quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA) correlations. A measure of isospin mixing in the approximate ground state is defined by means of the expectation value of the isospin operator squared in N=Z nuclei (which is generalized to N different from Z nuclei). Starting from strict Hartree-Fock approach without Coulomb, it is shown that the isospin breaking is negligible, on the order of a few per thousand for (N-Z)=6, increasing to a few percent with Coulomb. Pairing correlations induce rather large isospin mixing and Fermi transitions of the forbidden type (beta- for N Z). The enhancement produced by BCS correlations is compensated to a large extent by QRPA correlations induced by isospin conserving residual interactions that tend to restore isospin symmetry.

Superscaling, Scaling Functions and Nucleon Momentum Distributions in Nuclei

The scaling functions $f(ψ')$ and $F(y)$ from the $ψ'$- and $y$-scaling analyses of inclusive electron scattering from nuclei are explored within the coherent density fluctuation model (CDFM). In addition to the CDFM formulation in which the local density distribution is used, we introduce a new equivalent formulation of the CDFM based on the one-body nucleon momentum distribution (NMD). Special attention is paid to the different ways in which the excitation energy of the residual system is taken into account in $y$- and $ψ'$-scaling. Both functions, $f(ψ')$ and $F(y)$, are calculated using different NMD's and are compared with the experimental data for a wide range of nuclei. The good description of the data for $y < 0$ and $ψ' < 0$ (including $ψ'< -1$) makes it possible to show the sensitivity of the calculated scaling functions to the peculiarities of the NMD's in different regions of momenta. It is concluded that the existing data on the $ψ'$- and $y$-scaling are informative for the NMD's at momenta not larger than $2.0 ÷2.5$ fm$^{-1}$. The CDFM allows us to study simultaneously on the same footing the role of both basic quantities, the momentum and density distributions, for the description of scaling and superscaling phenomena in nuclei.

A deformed QRPA formalism for single and two-neutrino double beta decay

We use a deformed QRPA formalism to describe simultaneously the energy distributions of the single beta Gamow-Teller strength and the two-neutrino double beta decay matrix elements. Calculations are performed in a series of double beta decay partners with A = 48, 76, 82, 96, 100, 116, 128, 130, 136 and 150, using deformed Woods-Saxon potentials and deformed Skyrme Hartree-Fock mean fields. The formalism includes a quasiparticle deformed basis and residual spin-isospin forces in the particle-hole and particle-particle channels. We discuss the sensitivity of the parent and daughter Gamow-Teller strength distributions in single beta decay, as well as the sensitivity of the double beta decay matrix elements to the deformed mean field and to the residual interactions. Nuclear deformation is found to be a mechanism of suppression of the two-neutrino double beta decay. The double beta decay matrix elements are found to have maximum values for about equal deformations of parent and daughter nuclei. They decrease rapidly when differences in deformations increase. We remark the importance of a proper simultaneous description of both double beta decay and single Gamow-Teller strength distributions. Finally, we conclude that for further progress in the field it would be useful to improve and complete the experimental information on the studied Gamow-Teller strengths and nuclear deformations.

Electromagnetic (${\vec e},e'{\vec p}$) Observables & Relativistic Nucleon Dynamics

At present there exists a great interest in the search for evidence of possible modification of the nucleon form factors inside the nuclear medium. Recent theoretical work predict changes in the form factors within the experimental limits. Importantly, the longitudinal to sideways transferred polarization ratio has been identified as being ideally suited for such studies, as these polarization observables are believed to be the least sensitive to most standard nuclear structure uncertainties while their ratio shows a high sensitivity to the ratio of the electric to magnetic form factors. The kinematic regime where the measurements have been undertaken is at relatively high energy and it is clear that relativistic effects in wave functions and operators are essential. In this work we focus on the analysis of polarized $^{16}O(\vec{e},e'\vec{p})^{15}N$ observables. Our aim is to explore a selected set of model dependences that could contaminate any attempt to infer medium modifications, mainly related to the description of FSI and to the role played by relativity.

A$(\vec{e},e'\vec{p})$B responses: from bare nucleons to complex nuclei

We study the occurrence of factorization in polarized and unpolarized observables in coincidence quasi-elastic electron scattering. Starting with the relativistic distorted wave impulse approximation, we reformulate the effective momentum approximation and show that the latter leads to observables which factorize under some specific conditions. Within this framework, the role played by final state interactions and, in particular, by the spin-orbit term is explored. Connection with the nonrelativistic formalism is studied in depth. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the analytical derivations and to quantify the differences between factorized and unfactorized approaches.

New results for the two neutrino double beta decay in deformed nuclei with angular momentum projected basis

Four nuclei which are proved to be $2νββ$ emitters ($^{76}$Ge, $^{82}$Se, $^{150}$Nd, $^{238}$U), and four suspected, due to the corresponding Q-values, to have this property ($^{148}$Nd, $^{154}$Sm, $^{160}$Gd, $^{232}$Th), were treated within a proton-neutron quasiparticle random phase approximation (pnQRPA) with a projected spherical single particle basis. The advantage of the present procedure over the ones using a deformed Woods Saxon or Nilsson single particle basis is that the actual pnQRPA states have a definite angular momentum while all the others provide states having only K as a good quantum number. The model Hamiltonian involves a mean field term yielding the projected single particle states, a pairing interaction for alike nucleons and a dipole-dipole proton-neutron interaction in both the particle-hole (ph) and particle-particle (pp) channels. The effect of nuclear deformation on the single beta strength distribution as well as on the double beta Gamow-Teller transition amplitude (M$_{\rm GT}$) is analyzed. The results are compared with the existent data and with the results from a different approach, in terms of the process half life T$_{1/2}$. The case of different deformations for mother and daughter nuclei is also presented.

Superscaling in Nuclei: A Search for Scaling Function Beyond the Relativistic Fermi Gas Model

We construct a scaling function $f(ψ^{\prime})$ for inclusive electron scattering from nuclei within the Coherent Density Fluctuation Model (CDFM). The latter is a natural extension to finite nuclei of the Relativistic Fermi Gas (RFG) model within which the scaling variable $ψ^{\prime}$ was introduced by Donnelly and collaborators. The calculations show that the high-momentum components of the nucleon momentum distribution in the CDFM and their similarity for different nuclei lead to quantitative description of the superscaling in nuclei. The results are in good agreement with the experimental data for different transfer momenta showing superscaling for negative values of $ψ^{\prime}$, including those smaller than -1.
