Charge density distributions and related form factors in neutron-rich light exotic nuclei

Charge form factors corresponding to proton density distributions in exotic nuclei, such as $^{6,8}$He, $^{11}$Li, $^{17,19}$B and $^{14}$Be are calculated and compared. The results can be used as tests of various theoretical models for the exotic nuclei structure in possible future experiments using a colliding electron-exotic nucleus storage ring. The result of such a comparison would show the effect of the neutron halo or skin on the proton distributions in exotic nuclei.

Counting pairs in $^{44}$Ti with various interactions

We count the number of pairs in the single $j-$shell model of $^{44}$Ti for various interactions. For a state of total angular momentum $I$, the wave function can be written as $Ψ=\sum_{J_P J_N} D(J_P J_N) [(j^2)_{J_P}(j^2)_{J_N}]_I$, where $D(J_P J_N)$ is the probability amplitude that the protons couple to $J_P$ and the neutrons to $J_N$. For I=0 there are three states with ($I=0, T=0$) and one with ($I=0, T=2$). The latter is the double analog of $^{44}$Ca. In that case (T=2), the magnitude of $D(JJ)$ is the same as that of a corresponding two particle fractional parentage coefficient. In counting the number of pairs with an even angular momentum $J_A$ we find a new relationship obtained by diagonalizing a unitary nine-j symbol. We are also able to get results for the 'no-interaction' case for T=0 states, for which it is found that there are less ($J=1, T=0$) pairs than on the average. Relative to this 'no-interaction case' we find for the most realistic interaction used that there is an enhancement of pairs with angular momentum $J_A=0,2,1$ and 7, and a depletion for the others. Also considered are interactions in which only the ($J=0, T=1$) pair state is at lower energy, only the ($J=1, T=0$) pair state is lowered and where both are equally lowered.

Analysis of polarized $^{16}$O$(\vec{e},e'\vec{p})$ observables within the relativistic distorted wave impulse approximation

Recoil nucleon transferred polarization observables in coincidence quasielastic electron scattering are studied within the relativistic distorted wave impulse approximation. Results for response functions and polarization asymmetries are discussed for proton knockout from $p_{1/2}$, $p_{3/2}$ and $s_{1/2}$ shells in $^{16}$O. The impact of spinor distortion is examined by comparing the fully relativistic calculation with results obtained by projecting out the negative-energy components. In particular, a careful analysis of effects linked to the description of the bound and scattered relativistic nucleon wave functions is presented. The high sensitivity of some polarization observables to the dynamical enhancement of the lower components, already shown within the relativistic plane wave impulse approximation, is proven to be maintained in the relativistic distorted wave approach. Semi-relativistic approaches based on the effective momentum approximation are also studied. Finally, comparison with experimental data and a brief analysis of effects linked to medium modified form factors is presented.

Description of single and double analog states in the f7/2 shell: The Ti isotopes

The excitation energies of single analog states in even-odd Ti isotopes and double analog states in even-even Ti isotopes are microscopically described in a single j-shell formalism. A projection procedure for generalized BCS states has been used. As an alternative description a particle-core formalism is presented. The latter picture provides a two-parameter expression for excitation energies, which describes fairly well the data in four odd and three even isotopes of Ti.

Charge exchange operators sum rules and proton-neutron T=0 and T=1 pairing interactions

We study sum rules for charge exchange operators of the Gamow-Teller and Fermi type and explore what can be learned from them about proton-neutron pairing in T=0 and T=1 channels. We consider both energy weighted (EWSR) and non-energy weighted (NEWSR) sum rules. We use a schematic Hamiltonian to stress the distinctive roles of T=1 and T=0 pair interactions and correlations in the sum rules. Numerical results for 44Ti are presented for both schematic and realistic interactions.

Non-Scissors-Mode Behaviour of Isovector Magnetic Dipole Orbital Transitions Involving Isospin Transfer

We study the response of isovector orbital magnetic dipole (IOMD) transitions to the quadrupole-quadrupole ($Q \cdot Q$) interaction, to the isospin-conserving pairing interaction (ICP) and to combinations of both. We find qualitatively different behaviours for transitions in which the final isospin differs from the initial isospin versus cases where the two isospins are the same. For $N=Z$ even-even nuclei with $J^π=0^+, T=0$ ground states such as $^8Be$ and $^{20}Ne$, the summed $T=0 \to T=1$ IOMD from the ground state to all the $J=1, T=1$ states in the $0 \hbar ω$ space does not vanish when the $Q \cdot Q$ interaction is turned off. The pairing interaction (ICP) alone leads to a finite transition rate. For nuclei with $J=0^+, T=1$ ground states such as $^{10}Be$ and $^{22}Ne$, the summed $T=1 \to T=1$ IOMD $does$ vanish when the $Q \cdot Q$ interaction is turned off, as is expected in a good scissors-mode behaviour. However this is not the case for the corresponding sum of the $T=1 \to T=2$ IOMD transitions. In $^{22}Ne$ (but not in $^{10}Be$) the sum of the $T=1 \to T=2$ IOMD transitions is remarkably insensitive to the strengths of both the $Q \cdot Q$ and the ICP interactions. In $^{22}Ne$ an energy weighted-sum is similarly insensitive. All our calculations were carried out in the $0 \hbar ω$ space.

Gamow-Teller strength distributions in 76Ge and 76Se from deformed QRPA

We study Gamow-Teller strength distributions of 76Ge and 76Se within a deformed QRPA formalism, which includes residual spin-isospin forces in the particle-hole and particle-particle channels. We consider two different methods to construct the quasiparticle basis, a selfconsistent approach based on a deformed Hartree-Fock calculation with density-dependent Skyrme forces and a more phenomenological approach based on a deformed Woods-Saxon potential. Both methods contain pairing correlations in the BCS approach. We discuss the sensitivity of Gamow-Teller strength distributions to the deformed mean field and residual interactions.

Gamow-Teller strength distributions in Fe and Ni stable isotopes

We study Gamow-Teller strength distributions in some selected nuclei of particular Astrophysical interest within the iron mass region. The theoretical framework is based on a proton-neutron Quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation built on a deformed selfconsistent mean field basis obtained from two-body density-dependent Skyrme forces. We compare our results to available experimental information obtained from (n,p) and (p,n) charge exchange reactions.

Relativity in polarized electron scattering observables

Coincidence scattering of polarized electrons from nuclei with polarization transfer to outgoing nucleons is studied within the context of relativistic mean field theory. Effects introduced by the dynamical enhancement of the lower components of the bound and scattered nucleon wave functions are analyzed for the polarized response functions and transferred polarization asymmetries. Results obtained by projecting out the negative-energy components are compared with the fully-relativistic calculation. The crucial role played by the relativistic dynamics in some spin-dependent observables is clearly manifested even for low/medium values of the missing momentum. Kinematical relativistic effects are also analyzed. A discussion of the factorization approach and the mechanism for its breakdown is also briefly presented.

Beta-decay in odd-A and even-even proton-rich Kr isotopes

Beta-decay properties of proton-rich odd-A and even-even Krypton isotopes are studied in the framework of a deformed selfconsistent Hartree-Fock calculation with density-dependent Skyrme forces, including pairing correlations between like nucleons in BCS approximation. Residual spin-isospin interactions are consistently included in the particle-hole and particle-particle channels and treated in Quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation. The similarities and differences in the treatment of even-even and odd-A nuclei are stressed. Comparison to available experimental information is done for Gamow-Teller strength distributions, summed strengths, and half-lives. The dependence of these observables on deformation is particularly emphasized in a search for signatures of the shape of the parent nucleus.

Recent Developments in relativistic models for exclusive (e,e'p) reactions

A comparison of impulse approximation calculations for the (e,e'p) reaction, based on the Dirac equation and the Schrodinger one is presented. Trivial (kinematics) differences are indicated, as well as how to remove them from the standard nonrelativistic formalism. Signatures of the relativistic approach are found where the enhancement of the lower components (spinor distortion or negative energy contributions) modifies TL observables with respect to the nonrelativistic predictions, what seems to be confirmed by the experiment. Finally, the relativistic approach is used to analyze several experiments for the reaction 16O(e,e'p)15N taken at values of Q^2 from 0.2 to 0.8 (GeV/c)^2, not finding a significant Q^2 dependence of the scale factors over this range.

Spin-isospin excitations and beta+/EC half-lives of medium-mass deformed nuclei

A selfconsistent approach based on a deformed HF+BCS+QRPA method with density-dependent Skyrme forces is used to describe beta+ decay properties in even-even deformed proton rich nuclei. Residual spin-isospin forces are included in the particle-hole and particle-particle channels. The quasiparticle basis contains neutron-neutron and proton-proton pairing correlations in the BCS approach, while neutron-proton pairing interaction is treated as a residual force in QRPA. We discuss the sensitivity of Gamow-Teller strength distributions and beta+/EC half-lives to deformation, pairing and the strength of the particle-particle interaction. The dependence on deformation is also compared to that of spin M1 strength distributions.

Description of collective magnetic states within a spherical single particle basis

A many body Hamiltonian comprising pairing, quadrupole-quadrupole and spin-spin interaction is treated within a projected spherical basis with the aim of describing the detailed structure of the magnetic states of orbital and spin-flip nature in $^{144, 148-154}$Sm. The mean field for the single particle motion takes care of the volume conservation of a phenomenological core which results in having a complex dependence on deformation for single particle energies. Several experimental features like the total orbital and total spin strengths, the shape of the orbital strength distribution, the hump structure of the spin strength distribution, the quadratic dependence of the orbital strength on nuclear deformation, the saturation effect of the orbital strength with respect to the Casten's factor P are very well described within a quasiparticle random phase approximation formalism. Comparison of present results with those obtained in some previous treatments are also given.

Relativistic mean field approximation to the analysis of 16O(e,e'p)15N data at |Q^2|\leq 0.4 (GeV/c)^2

We use the relativistic distorted wave impulse approximation to analyze data on 16O(e,e'p)15N at |Q^2|\leq 0.4 (GeV/c)^2 that were obtained by different groups and seemed controversial. Results for differential cross-sections, response functions and A_TL asymmetry are discussed and compared to different sets of experimental data for proton knockout from p_{1/2} and p_{3/2} shells in 16O. We compare with a nonrelativistic approach to better identify relativistic effects. The present relativistic approach is found to accommodate most of the discrepancy between data from different groups, smoothing a long standing controversy.

Ground state particle-particle correlations and double beta decay

A self-consistent formalism for the double beta decay of Fermi type is provided. The particle-particle channel of the two-body interaction is considered first in the mean field equations and then in the QRPA. The resulting approach is called the QRPA with a self-consistent mean field (QRPASMF). The mode provided by QRPASMF, does not collapse for any strength of the particle-particle interaction. The transition amplitude for double beta decay is almost insensitive to the variation of the particle-particle interaction. Comparing it with the result of the standard pnQRPA, it is smaller by a factor 6. The prediction for transition amplitude agrees quite well with the exact result. The present approach is the only one which produces a strong decrease of the amplitude and at the same time does not alter the stability of the ground state.

Nuclear Pairing in the T=0 channel revisited

Recent published data on the isoscalar gap in symmetric nuclear matter using the Paris force and the corresponding BHF single particle dispersion are corrected leading to an extremely high proton-neutron gap of $Δ\sim 8$ MeV at $ρ\sim 0.5ρ_0$. Arguments whether this value can be reduced due to screening effects are discussed. A density dependent delta interaction with cut off is adjusted so as to approximately reproduce the nuclear matter values with the Paris force.

Inclusive quasielastic electron scattering on $^6$He: a probe of the halo structure

We investigate inclusive electron scattering reactions on two-neutron halo nuclei in the quasielastic region. Expressions for the cross section and structure functions are given assuming that the halo nucleus can be described as a three-body system (${core}+n+n$). The method is applied to $^6$He. We compute cross sections and structure functions, and investigate the kinematic conditions for which the observables are determined either by $α$-knockout or by halo neutron-knockout. The optimal kinematical domain to disantangle the momentum distributions of the various components of the three--body system ($q \lesssim 200$ MeV/c and $ω< q^2/2M_N + 20$ MeV) are explored.

Effective density dependent pairing forces in the T=1 and T=0 channels

Effective density dependent pairing forces of zero range are adjusted on gap values in T=0,1 channels calculated with the Paris force in symmetric nuclear matter. General discussions on the pairing force are presented. In conjunction with the effective k-mass the nuclear pairing force seems to need very little renormalization in the T=1 channel. The situation in the T=0 channel is also discussed.
