Disordered Quantum smectics

We study the impurity pinning of the Quantum Hall (QH) smectic state arising in two dimensional electron systems in high Landau levels. We use replicas and a Gaussian Variational method to deal with the disorder. The pinned quantum smectic exhibits very anisotropic behaviour, with density correlations along the direction of the stripes manifesting a Bragg-Glass type behaviour i.e., quasi long range order whereas those in the transverse direction are infra red divergent. We calculate the dynamical conductivity along the stripe direction and find a wavelength dependent pinning peak.

Heat conduction and Wiedemann-Franz Law in disordered Luttinger Liquids

We consider heat transport in a Luttinger liquid (LL) with weak disorder and study the Lorenz number for this system. We start at a high-$T$ regime, and calculate both the electrical and thermal conductivities using a memory function approach. The resulting Lorenz number $L$ is independent of $T$ but depends explicitly on the LL exponents. Lowering $T$, however, allows for a renormalization of the LL exponents from their bare values by disorder, causing a violation of the Wiedemann-Franz law. Finally, we extend the discussion to quantum wire systems and study the wire size dependence of the Lorenz number.

Magnetization and dimerization profiles of the cut two-leg spin ladder and spin-1 chain

The physical properties of the edge states of the cut two-leg spin ladder are investigated by means of the bosonization approach. By carefully treating boundary conditions, we derive the existence of spin-1/2 edge states in the spin ladder with a ferromagnetic rung exchange and for the open spin-1 Heisenberg chain. In contrast, such states are absent in the antiferromagnetic rung coupling case. The approach, based on a mapping onto decoupled semi-infinite off-critical Ising models, allows us to compute several physical quantities of interest. In particular, we determine the magnetization and dimerization profiles of the cut two-leg spin ladder and of the open biquadratic spin-1 chain in the vicinity of the SU(2)$_2$ WZNW critical point.

Ising transition in a one-dimensional quarter-filled electron system with dimerization

We examine critical properties of the quarter-filled one-dimensional Hubbard model with dimerization and with the onsite and nearest-neighbor Coulomb repulsion U and V. By utilizing the bosonization method, it is shown that the system exhibits an Ising quantum phase transition from the Mott insulating state to the charge-ordered insulating state. It is also shown that the dielectric permittivity exhibits a strong enhancement as decreasing temperature with power-law dependence at the Ising critical point.

Effects of anisotropic spin-exchange interactions in spin ladders

We investigate the effects of the Dzialoshinskii-Moriya (DM) and Kaplan-Shekhtman-Entin-Wohlman-Aharony (KSEA) interactions on various thermodynamic and magnetic properties of a spin 1/2 ladder. Using the Majorana fermion representation, we derive the spectrum of low energy excitations for a pure DM interaction and in presence of a superimposed KSEA interaction. We calculate the various correlation functions for both cases and discuss how they are modified with respect to the case of an isotropic ladder. We also discuss the electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrum of the system and show that it is strongly influenced by the orientation of the magnetic field with respect to the Dzialoshinskii-Moriya vector. Implications of our calculations for NMR and ESR experiments on ladder systems are discussed.

Competition of random and periodic potentials in interacting fermionic systems and classical equivalents: the Mott Glass

We study the competition between a random potential and a commensurate potential on interacting fermionic and bosonic systems using a variety of methods. We focus on one dimensional interacting fermionic systems but higher dimensional bosonic and fermionic extensions, as well as classical equivalents are also discussed. Our methods which include bosonization, replica variational method, functional renormalization group (RG) and perturbation around the atomic limit, go beyond conventional perturbative expansions around the Luttinger liquid in one dimension. All these methods agree on the prediction in these systems of a phase, the Mott glass, intermediate between the Anderson Insulator (compressible, with a pseudogap in the optical conductivity) and the Mott Insulator (incompressible with a gap in the optical conductivity). The Mott glass, which was unexpected from a perturbative renormalization group point of view has a pseudogap in the conductivity while remaining incompressible. Having derived the existence of the Mott Glass phase in one dimension, we show qualitatively that its existence can also be expected in higher dimension. We discuss the relevance of this phase to experimental systems such as disordered classical elastic systems and dirty bosons.

Meissner effect in a bosonic ladder

We investigate the effect of a magnetic field on a bosonic ladder. We show that such a system leads to the one dimensional equivalent of a vortex lattice in a superconductor. We investigate the physical properties of the vortex phase, such as vortex density and vortex correlation functions and show that magnetization has plateaus for some commensurate values of the mag netic field. The lowest plateau corresponds to a true Meissner to vortex transition at a critical field $H_{c1}$ that exists although the system has no long range superconducting order. Implications for experimental realizations such as Josephson junction arrays are discussed.

Competition of disorder and interchain hopping in a two-chain Hubbard model

We study the interplay of Anderson localization and interaction in a two chain Hubbard ladder allowing for arbitrary ratio of disorder strength to interchain coupling. We obtain three different types of spin gapped localized phases depending on the strength of disorder: a pinned $4k_F$ Charge Density Wave (CDW) for weak disorder, a pinned $2k_F$ CDW$^π$ for intermediate disorder and two independently pinned single chain $2k_F$ CDW for strong disorder. Confinement of electrons can be obtained as a result of strong disorder or strong attraction. We give the full phase diagram as a function of disorder, interaction strength and interchain hopping. We also study the influence of interchain hopping on localization length and show that localization is enhanced by a small interchain hopping but suppressed by a large interchain hopping.

Raman Scattering from Magnetic Excitations in coupled Spin Ladders

We consider Raman scattering of coupled two leg spin ladders in the Fleury-Loudon regime. We derive the dependence of the intensity with polarization of the incoming light and temperature and discuss the effect of interaction of the elementary excitations on the shape of the spectrum. We show that Raman scattering spectrum is sensitive to the effective dimensionality of the coupled ladder system, making Raman scattering useful to discriminate true ladder systems from quasi two dimensional spin gap systems.

Role of interchain hopping in two disordered chains of spinless fermions

The effect of interchain hopping and interaction on Anderson localization has been investigated for two coupled chains of spinless fermions with nearest neighbor interaction. Using the renormalization group method, we find that interchain hopping plays a significant role when the correlation gap induced by the interplay of interchain hopping and intrachain interaction becomes larger than the Anderson localization energy scale induced by impurities. The strong competition between localization and delocalization is examined for attractive interaction.

Disordered Quantum Solids

Due to the peculiar non-fermi liquid of one dimensional systems, disorder has particularly strong effects. We show that such systems belong to the more general class of disordered quantum solids. We discuss the physics of such disordered interacting systems and the methods that allows to treat them. In addition to, by now standard renormalization group methods, We explain how a simple variational approach allows to treat these problems even in case when the RG fails. We discuss various physical realizations of such disordered quantum solids both in one and higher dimensions (Wigner crystal, Bose glass). We investigate in details the interesting example of a disordered Mott insulator and argue that intermediate disorder can lead to a novel phase, the Mott glass, intermediate between a Mott and and Anderson insulator.

Raman Scattering cross section of Spin Ladders

The Raman scattering spectra from magnetic excitations in an antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 two leg ladder is investigated for weak and strong interladder coupling. In the first case, a cusp in the Raman intensityis obtained at a frequency twice the gap. In the second case, a peak at twice the gap replaces the cusp. We discuss the relevance of our calculation to recent experiments on CaV2O5 and Sr14Cu24O41.

Magnetism and superconductivity in underscreened Kondo chains

We present a one dimensional model of electrons coupled to localized moments of spin $S\ge 1$ in which magnetism and superconductivity interplay in a nontrivial manner. This model has a non-Fermi liquid ground state of the chiral spin liquid type. A non-conventional odd-frequency pairing is shown to be the dominant instability of the system, together with antiferromagnetism of the local moments. We argue that this model captures the physics of the Kondo-Heisenberg spin S=1 chain, in the limit of strong Kondo coupling. Finally, we discuss briefly the effect of interchain coupling.

Low energy dynamics of the one dimensional multichannel Kondo-Heisenberg Lattice

We determine exactly the fixed point Hamiltonian of the one dimensional multichannel Kondo-Heisenberg lattice model for any number of channels N>=2. An anomalous singlet with non trivial internal dynamics is generated. We compute the correlation functions of the various conventional and unconventional order parameters of the system and find that for N<=4 the composite order parameter induce the dominant instabilities.

Low-energy behavior of the spin-tube and spin-orbital models

The low-energy effective Hamiltonian of three coupled spin chains with periodic boundary conditions (spin tube) is expressed, in the limit of strong interchain coupling, in terms of XXZ chains coupled by biquadratic exchange interaction. A similar class of models was proposed to describe the coupling of spins to orbital degrees of freedom in materials such as NaV2O5. We investigate these models by means of bosonization and renormalization group techniques, and find that the generic phase diagram comprises a gapless region and gapped regions consisting of a spin liquid phase and various antiferromagnetic phases. We discuss the properties of the spin liquid phase, in particular the nature of the ground state and of the elementary excitations above it. We then study the effect of a magnetic field, and conclude that a strong enough magnetic field can suppress the dimerized phase leading to a two component Luttinger liquid. The critical exponents at the transition gapful-gapless are calculated and shown to be non-universal in the spin tube case as well as in the generic spin orbital problem.

Critical behaviour of a spin-tube model in a magnetic field

We show that the low-energy physics of the spin-tube model in presence of a critical magnetic field can be described by a broken SU(3) spin chain. Using the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis Theorem we characterize the possible magnetization plateaus and study the critical behavior in the region of transition between the plateaus m=1/2 and m=3/2 by means of renormalization group calculations performed on the bosonized effective continuum field theory. We show that in certain regions of the parameter space of the effective theory the system remains gapless, and we compute the spin-spin correlation functions in these regions. We also discuss the possibility of a plateau at m=1, and show that although there exists in the continuum theory a term that might cause the appearance of a plateau there, such term is unlikely to be relevant. This conjecture is proved by DMRG techniques. The modifications of the three-leg ladder Hamiltonian that might show plateaus at m =1,5/6,7/6 are discussed, and we give the expected form of correlation functions on the m=1 plateau.

A possible new phase of commensurate insulators with disorder: the Mott Glass

A new thermodynamic phase resulting from the competition between a commensurate potential and disorder in interacting fermionic or bosonic systems is predicted. It requires interactions of finite extent. This phase, intermediate between the Mott insulator and the Anderson insulator, is both incompressible and has no gap in the conductivity. The corresponding phase is also predicted for commensurate classical elastic systems in presence of correlated disorder.

Anderson localization in Hubbard ladders

The effect of a weak random potential on two-leg Hubbard ladders is investigated. The random potential is shown to induce Anderson localization except for attractive enough interactions, supressing completely d-wave superconductivity. These localization effects remain very strong even for many ladders coupled by Josephson coupling. Both dc and ac conductivities and localization lengths are obtained. Consequences for the superconducting ladder compound Sr$_x$Ca$_{14-x}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41+δ}$ are discussed.
