Controlling Luttinger liquid physics in spin ladders under a magnetic field

We present a 14N nuclear magnetic resonance study of a single crystal of CuBr4(C5H12N)2 (BPCB) consisting of weakly coupled spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic ladders. Treating ladders in the gapless phase as Luttinger liquids, we are able to fully account for (i) the magnetic field dependence of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 at 250 mK and for (ii) the phase transition to a 3D ordered phase occuring below 110 mK due to weak interladder exchange coupling. BPCB is thus an excellent model system where the possibility to control Luttinger liquid parameters in a continuous manner is demonstrated and Luttinger liquid model tested in detail over the whole fermion band.

Phase diagram and momentum distribution of an interacting Bose gas in a bichromatic lattice

We determine the phase diagram and the momentum distribution for a one-dimensional Bose gas with repulsive short range interactions in the presence of a two-color lattice potential, with incommensurate ratio among the respective wave lengths, by using a combined numerical (DMRG) and analytical (bosonization) analysis. The system displays a delocalized (superfluid) phase at small values of the intensity of the secondary lattice V2 and a localized (Bose glass-like) phase at larger intensity V2. We analyze the localization transition as a function of the height V2 beyond the known limits of free and hard-core bosons. We find that weak repulsive interactions unfavor the localized phase i. e. they increase the critical value of V2 at which localization occurs. In the case of integer filling of the primary lattice, the phase diagram at fixed density displays, in addition to a transition from a superfluid to a Bose glass phase, a transition to a Mott-insulating state for not too large V2 and large repulsion. We also analyze the emergence of a Bose-glass phase by looking at the evolution of the Mott-insulator lobes when increasing V2. The Mott lobes shrink and disappear above a critical value of V2. Finally, we characterize the superfluid phase by the momentum distribution, and show that it displays a power-law decay at small momenta typical of Luttinger liquids, with an exponent depending on the combined effect of the interactions and of the secondary lattice. In addition, we observe two side peaks which are due to the diffraction of the Bose gas by the second lattice. This latter feature could be observed in current experiments as characteristics of pseudo-random Bose systems.

The low-energy excitation spectrum of one-dimensional dipolar quantum gases

We determine the excitation spectrum of a bosonic dipolar quantum gas in a one-dimensional geometry, from the dynamical density-density correlation functions simulated by means of Reptation Quantum Monte Carlo techniques. The excitation energy is always vanishing at the first vector of the reciprocal lattice in the whole crossover from the liquid-like at low density to the quasi-ordered state at high density, demonstrating the absence of a roton minimum. Gaps at higher reciprocal lattice vectors are seen to progressively close with increasing density, while the quantum state evolves into a quasi-periodic structure. The simulational data together with the uncertainty-principle inequality also provide a rigorous proof of the absence of long-range order in such a super-strongly correlated system. Our conclusions confirm that the dipolar gas is in a Luttinger-liquid state, significantly affected by the dynamical correlations. The connection with ongoing experiments is also discussed.

Diamagnetism of doped two-leg ladders and probing the nature of their commensurate phases

We study the magnetic orbital effect of a doped two-leg ladder in the presence of a magnetic field component perpendicular to the ladder plane. Combining both low-energy approach (bosonization) and numerical simulations (density-matrix renormalization group) on the strong coupling limit (t-J model), a rich phase diagram is established as a function of hole doping and magnetic flux. Above a critical flux, the spin gap is destroyed and a Luttinger liquid phase is stabilized. Above a second critical flux, a reentrance of the spin gap at high magnetic flux is found. Interestingly, the phase transitions are associated with a change of sign of the orbital susceptibility. Focusing on the small magnetic field regime, the spin-gapped superconducting phase is robust but immediately acquires algebraic transverse (i.e. along rungs) current correlations which are commensurate with the 4k_F density correlations. In addition, we have computed the zero-field orbital susceptibility for a large range of doping and interactions ratio J/t : we found strong anomalies at low J/t only in the vicinity of the commensurate fillings corresponding to delta = 1/4 and 1/2. Furthermore, the behavior of the orbital susceptibility reveals that the nature of these insulating phases is different: while for delta = 1/4 a 4k_F charge density wave is confirmed, the delta = 1/2 phase is shown to be a bond order wave.

Collective excitations of trapped one-dimensional dipolar quantum gases

We calculate the excitation modes of a 1D dipolar quantum gas confined in a harmonic trap with frequency $ω_0$ and predict how the frequency of the breathing n=2 mode characterizes the interaction strength evolving from the Tonks-Girardeau value $ω_2=2ω_0$ to the quasi-ordered, super-strongly interacting value $ω_2=\sqrt{5}ω_0$. Our predictions are obtained within a hydrodynamic Luttinger-Liquid theory after applying the Local Density Approximation to the equation of state for the homogeneous dipolar gas, which are in turn determined from Reptation Quantum Monte Carlo simulations. They are shown to be in quite accurate agreement with the results of a sum-rule approach. These effects can be observed in current experiments, revealing the Luttinger-liquid nature of 1D dipolar Bose gases.

Bosonization and density-matrix renormalization group studies of Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase and irrational magnetization plateaus in coupled chains

We review the properties of two coupled fermionic chains, or ladders, under a magnetic field parallel to the lattice plane. Results are computed by complementary analytical (bosonization) and numerical (density-matrix renormalization group) methods which allows a systematic comparison. Limiting cases such as coupled bands and coupled chains regimes are discussed. We particularly focus on the evolution of the superconducting correlations under increasing field and on the presence of irrational magnetization plateaus. We found the existence of large doping-dependent magnetization plateaus in the weakly-interacting and strong-coupling limits and in the non-trivial case of isotropic couplings. We report on the existence of extended Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phases within the isotropic t-J and Hubbard models, deduced from the evolution of different observables under magnetic field. Emphasis is put on the variety of superconducting order parameters present at high magnetic field. We have also computed the evolution of the Luttinger exponent corresponding to the ungaped spin mode appearing at finite magnetization. In the coupled chain regime, the possibility of having polarized triplet pairing under high field is predicted by bosonization.

Breathers and Raman scattering in a two-leg ladder with staggered Dzialoshinskii-Moriya interaction

Recent experiments have revealed the role of staggered Dzialoshinskii-Moriya interaction in the magnetized phase of an antiferromagnetic spin 1/2 two-leg ladder compound under a uniform magnetic field. We derive a low energy effective field theory describing a magnetized two-leg ladder with a weak staggered Dzialoshinskii-Moriya interaction. This theory predicts the persistence of the spin gap in the magnetized phase, in contrast to standard two-leg ladders, and the presence of bound states in the excitation spectrum. Such bound states are observable in Raman scattering measurements. These results are then extended to intermediate Dzialoshinskii-Moriya interaction using Exact Diagonalizations.

Critical properties and Bose Einstein Condensation in dimer spin systems

We analyze the spin relaxation time $1/T_1$ for a system made of weakly coupled one dimensional ladders. This system allows to probe the dimensional crossover between a Luttinger liquid and a Bose-Einstein condensateof magnons. We obtain the temperature dependence of $1/T_1$ in the various dimensional regimes, and discuss the experimental consequences.

Evidence of Luttinger liquid behavior in one-dimensional dipolar quantum gases

The ground state and structure of a one-dimensional Bose gas with dipolar repulsions is investigated at zero temperature by a combined Reptation Quantum Monte Carlo (RQMC) and bosonization approach. A non trivial Luttinger-liquid behavior emerges in a wide range of intermediate densities, evolving into a Tonks-Girardeau gas at low density and into a classical quasi-ordered state at high density. The density dependence of the Luttinger exponent is extracted from the numerical data, providing analytical predictions for observable quantities, such as the structure factor and the momentum distribution. We discuss the accessibility of such predictions in current experiments with ultracold atomic and molecular gases.

Atom-molecule coherence in a one-dimensional system

We study a model of one-dimensional fermionic atoms that can bind in pairs to form bosonic molecules. We show that at low energy, a coherence develops between the molecule and fermion Luttinger liquids. At the same time, a gap opens in the spin excitation spectrum. The coherence implies that the order parameters for the molecular Bose-Einstein Condensation and the atomic BCS pairing become identical. Moreover, both bosonic and fermionic charge density wave correlations decay exponentially, in contrast with a usual Luttinger liquid. We exhibit a Luther-Emery point where the systems can be described in terms of noninteracting pseudofermions. At this point, we provide closed form expressions for the density-density response functions.

Coulombian Disorder in Periodic Systems

We study the effect of unscreened charged impurities on periodic systems. We show that the long wavelength component of the disorder becomes long ranged and dominates static correlation functions. On the other hand, because of the statistical tilt symmetry, dynamical properties such as pinning remain unaffected. As a concrete example, we focus on the effect of Coulombian disorder generated by charged impurities, on 3D charge density waves with non local elasticity. We calculate the x-ray intensity and find that it is identical to the one produced by thermal fluctuations in a disorder-free smectic-A. We discuss the consequences of these results for experiments.

Adiabatic-antiadiabatic crossover in a spin-Peierls chain

We consider an XXZ spin-1/2 chain coupled to optical phonons with non-zero frequency $ω_0$. In the adiabatic limit (small $ω_0$), the chain is expected to spontaneously dimerize and open a spin gap, while the phonons become static. In the antiadiabatic limit (large $ω_0$), phonons are expected to give rise to frustration, so that dimerization and formation of spin-gap are obtained only when the spin-phonon interaction is large enough. We study this crossover using bosonization technique. The effective action is solved both by the Self Consistent Harmonic Approximation (SCHA)and by Renormalization Group (RG) approach starting from a bosonized description. The SCHA allows to analyze the lowfrequency regime and determine the coupling constant associated with the spin-Peierls transition. However, it fails to describe the SU(2) invariant limit. This limit is tackled by the RG. Three regimes are found. For $ω_0\llΔ_s$, where $Δ_s$ is the gap in the static limit $ω_0\to 0$, the system is in the adiabatic regime, and the gap remains of order $Δ_s$. For $ω_0>Δ_s$, the system enters the antiadiabatic regime, and the gap decreases rapidly as $ω_0$ increases. Finally, for $ω_0>ω_{BKT}$, where $ω_{BKT}$ is an increasing function of the spin phonon coupling, the spin gap vanishes via a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. Our results are discussed in relation with numerical and experimental studies of spin-Peierls systems.

Magnetostriction in an array of spin chains under magnetic field

We consider an array of XX spin-1/2 chains coupled to acoustic phonons and placed in a magnetic field. Treating the phonons in the mean field approximation, we show that this system presents a first order transition as a function of the magnetic field between a partially magnetized distorted state and the fully polarized undistorted state at low temperature. This behavior results from the magnetostriction of the coupled chain system. A dip in the elastic constant of the material near the saturation field along with an anomaly in the magnetic susceptibility is predicted. We also predict the contraction of the material as the magnetic field is reduced (positive magnetostriction) and the reciprocal effect i.e. a decrease of magnetization under applied pressure. At higher temperature, the first order transition is replaced by a crossover. However, the anomalies in the susceptibilities in the system near the saturation field are still present. We discuss the relevance of our analysis in relation to recent experiments on spin-1/2 chain and ladder materials in strong magnetic fields.

Mean Field theory of the spin-Peierls transition

We revisit the problem of the spin-Peierls instability in a one dimensional spin-1/2 chain coupled to phonons. The phonons are treated within the mean field approximation. We use bosonization techniques to describe the gapped spin chain and then use the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz to obtain quantitative results for the thermodynamics of the spin-Peierls system in a whole range of temperature. This allows us to predict the behavior of the specific heat and the magnetic susceptibility in the entire dimerized phase. We study the effect of small magnetic fields on the transition. Moreover, we obtain the parameters of the Landau-Ginzburg theory describing this continuous phase transition near the critical point.

Z_3 Quantum Criticality in a spin-1/2 chain model

The stability of the magnetization $m=1/3$ plateau phase of the XXZ spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain with competing interactions is investigated upon switching on a staggered transverse magnetic field. Within a bosonization approach, it is shown that the low-energy properties of the model are described by an effective two-dimensional XY model in a three-fold symmetry-breaking field. A phase transition in the three-state Potts universality class is expected separating the $m=1/3$ plateau phase to a phase where the spins are polarized along the staggered magnetic field. The Z$_3$ critical properties of the transition are determined within the bosonization approach.

Resonant magnetic mode in superconducting 2-leg ladders

The spin dynamics of a doped 2-leg spin ladder is investigated by numerical techniques. We show that a hole pair-magnon boundstate evolves at finite hole doping into a sharp magnetic excitation below the two-particle continuum. This is supported by a field theory argument based on a SO(6)-symmetric ladder. Similarities and differences with the resonant mode of the high-T$_c$ cuprates are discussed.

Charge Density Waves and Bond Order Waves in a quarter filled extended Hubbard ladder

We investigate the phase diagram of a quarter filled Hubbard ladder with nearest-neighbor Coulomb repulsion using bosonization and renormalization group approach. Focusing on the strong-repulsion regime, we discuss the effect of an interchain exchange interaction J and interchain repulsion V on the possible ground states of the system and charge order configurations. Since the spin excitations always possess a gap, we find competing bond-order wave and charge density wave phases as possible ground states of the ladder model. We discuss the elementary excitations in these various phases and point an analogy between the excitations on some of these phases and those of a Kondo-Heisenberg insulator. We also study the order of the quantum phase transitions between the different ground states of the system. We obtain second order transitions in the Ising or SU(2)_2 universality class or first order transitions. We map the complete phase diagram in the J-V plane by integrating perturbative renormalization-group equations. Finally, we discuss the effect of doping away from half-filling and the effect of an applied magnetic field.

Thermal transport in one-dimensional spin gap systems

We study thermal transport in one dimensional spin systems both in the presence and absence of impurities. In the absence of disorder, all these spin systems display a temperature dependent Drude peak in the thermal conductivity. In gapless systems, the low temperature Drude weight is proportional to temperature and to the central charge which characterizes the conformal field theory that describes the system at low energies. On the other hand, the low temperature Drude weight of spin gap systems shows an activated behavior modulated by a power law. For temperatures higher than the spin gap, one recovers the linear T behavior akin to gapless systems. For temperatures larger than the exchange coupling, the Drude weight decays as 1/T^2. We argue that this behavior is a generic feature of quasi one dimensional spin gap systems with a relativistic-like low energy dispersion. We also consider the effect of a magnetic field on the Drude weight with emphasis on the commensurate-incommensurate transition induced by it. We then study the effect of nonmagnetic impurities on the thermal conductivity of the dimerized XY chain and the spin-1/2 two leg ladder. Impurities destroy the Drude peak and the thermal conductivity exhibits a purely activated behavior at low temperature, with an activation gap renormalized by disorder. The relevance of these results for experiments is briefly discussed.
