Anomalous electronic Raman scattering in Na_xCoO_2 H_2O

Raman scattering experiments on Na_{x}CoO_2 yH_2O single crystals show a broad electronic continuum with a pronounced peak around 100 cm-1 and a cutoff at approximately 560 cm-1over a wide range of doping levels. The electronic Raman spectra in superconducting and non-superconducting samples are similar at room temperature, but evolve in markedly different ways with decreasing temperature. For superconducting samples, the low-energy spectral weight is depleted upon cooling below T* sim 150K, indicating a opening of a pseudogap that is not present in non-superconducting materials. Weak additional phonon modes observed below T* suggest that the pseudogap is associated with charge ordering.

Single-particle spectral function of quarter-filled ladder systems

We study the single-particle properties of quarter-filled ladder systems such as sodium vanadate by means of a recently developed generalization of the variational cluster perturbation theory to extended Hubbard models. We find a homogeneous antiferromagnetic insulating phase for nearest-neighbor repulsions smaller than a critical value, without any metallic phase for small repulsions. Different from C-DMFT and LDA considerations, the inclusion of diagonal hopping within a ladder has little effect on the bonding bands, while flattening and shifting the antibonding bands. In the low-temperature charge-ordered phase, the spectrum depends on whether the ordering is driven by the Coulomb repulsion or by the coupling to a static lattice distortion. The small change of the experimentally observed gap upon charge ordering implies that the lattice coupling plays an important role in this ordering. Inter-ladder coupling is straightforward to include within our method. We show that it has only a minor effect on the spectral function. The numerically calculated spectra show good agreement with experimental angle-resolved photo-emission data.

Spin relaxation in quantum dots with random spin-orbit coupling

We investigate the longitudinal spin relaxation arising due to spin-flip transitions accompanied by phonon emission in quantum dots where the strength of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling is a random function of the lateral (in-plane) coordinate on the spatial nanoscale. In this case the Rashba contribution to the spin-orbit coupling cannot be completely removed by applying a uniform external bias across the quantum dot plane. Due to the remnant random contribution, the spin relaxation rate cannot be decreased by more than two orders of magnitude even when the external bias fully compensates the regular part of the spin-orbit coupling.

Physical Limits of the ballistic and non-ballistic Spin-Field-Effect Transistor: Spin Dynamics in Remote Doped Structures

We investigate the spin dynamics and relaxation in remotely-doped two dimensional electron systems where the dopants lead to random fluctuations of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Due to the resulting random spin precession, the spin relaxation time is limited by the strength and spatial scale of the random contribution to the spin-orbit coupling. We concentrate on the role of the randomness for two systems where the direction of the spin-orbit field does not depend on the electron momentum: the spin field-effect transistor with balanced Rashba and Dresselhaus couplings and the (011) quantum well. Both of these systems are considered as promising for the spintronics applications because of the suppression of the Dyakonov-Perel' mechanism there makes the realization of a spin field effect transistor in the diffusive regime possible. We demonstrate that the spin relaxation through the randomness of spin-orbit coupling imposes important physical limitations on the operational properties of these devices.

Generation of spin currents via Raman scattering

We show theoretically that stimulated spin flip Raman scattering can be used to inject spin currents in doped semiconductors with spin split bands. A pure spin current, where oppositely oriented spins move in opposite directions, can be injected in zincblende crystals and structures. The calculated spin current should be detectable by pump-probe optical spectroscopy and anomalous Hall effect measurement.

Non-exponential spin relaxation in magnetic field in quantum wells with random spin-orbit coupling

We investigate the spin dynamics of electrons in quantum wells where the Rashba type of spin-orbit coupling is present in the form of random nanosize domains. We study the effect of magnetic field on the spin relaxation in these systems and show that the spatial randomness of spin-orbit coupling limits the minimum relaxation rate and leads to a Gaussian time-decay of spin polarization due to memory effects. In this case the relaxation becomes faster with increase of the magnetic field in contrast to the well known magnetic field suppression of spin relaxation.

Spin current injection by intersubband transitions in quantum wells

We show that a pure spin current can be injected in quantum wells by the absorption of linearly polarized infrared radiation, leading to transitions between subbands. The magnitude and the direction of the spin current depend on the Dresselhaus and Rashba spin-orbit coupling constants and light frequency and, therefore, can be manipulated by changing the light frequency and/or applying an external bias across the quantum well. The injected spin current should be observable either as a voltage generated via the anomalous spin-Hall effect, or by spatially resolved pump-probe optical spectroscopy.

Optical properties, electron-phonon coupling, and Raman scattering of vanadium ladder compounds

The electronic structure of two V-based ladder compounds, the quarter-filled NaV$_2$O$_5$ in the symmetric phase and the iso-structural half-filled CaV$_2$O$_5$ is investigated by ab initio calculations. Based on the bandstructure we determine the dielectric tensor $ε(ω)$ of these systems in a wide energy range. The frequencies and eigenvectors of the fully symmetric A$_{g}$ phonon modes and the corresponding electron-phonon and spin-phonon coupling parameters are also calculated from first-principles. We determine the Raman scattering intensities of the A$_g$ phonon modes as a function of polarization and frequency of the exciting light. All results, i.e. shape and magnitude of the dielectric function, phonon frequencies and Raman intensities show very good agreement with available experimental data.

Pressure-induced hole doping of the Hg-based cuprate superconductors

We investigate the electronic structure and the hole content in the copper-oxygen planes of Hg based high Tc cuprates for one to four CuO2 layers and hydrostatic pressures up to 15 GPa. We find that with the pressure-induced additional number of holes of the order of 0.05e the density of states at the Fermi level changes approximately by a factor of 2. At the same time the saddle point is moved to the Fermi level accompanied by an enhanced k_z dispersion. This finding explains the pressure behavior of Tc and leads to the conclusion that the applicability of the van Hove scenario is restricted. By comparison with experiment, we estimate the coupling constant to be of the order of 1, ruling out the weak coupling limit.

Charge ordering in quarter-filled ladder systems coupled to the lattice

We investigate charge ordering in the presence of electron-phonon coupling for quarter-filled ladder systems by using Exact Diagonalization. As an example we consider NaV2O5 using model parameters obtained from first-principles band-structure calculations. The relevant Holstein coupling to the lattice considerably reduces the critical value of the nearest-neighbor Coulomb repulsion at which formation of the zig-zag charge-ordered state occurs, which is then accompanied by a static lattice distortion. Energy and length of a kink-like excitation on the background of the distorted lattice are calculated. Spin and charge spectra on ladders with and without static distortion are obtained, and the charge gap and the effective spin-spin exchange parameter J are extracted. J agrees well with experimental results. Analysis of the dynamical Holstein model, restricted to a small number of phonons, shows that low frequency lattice vibrations increase the charge order, accompanied by dynamically produced zig-zag lattice distortions.

Optical properties and Raman scattering of vanadium ladder compounds

We investigate electronic and optical properties of the V-based ladder compounds NaV2O5, the iso-structural CaV2O5, as well as MgV2O5, which differs from NaV2O5 and CaV2O5 in the c axis stacking. We calculate ab initio the A_g phonon modes in these compounds as a basis for the investigation of the electron-phonon and spin-phonon coupling. The phonon modes together with the dielectric tensors as a function of the corresponding ion displacements are the starting point for the calculation of the A_g Raman scattering.

Sound attenuation on the Bose-Einstein condensation of magnons in TlCuCl_3

We investigated experimentally and theoretically sound attenuation in the quantum spin system TlCuCl_3 in magnetic fields at low temperatures. Near the point of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of magnons a sharp peak in the sound attenuation is observed. The peak demonstrates a hysteresis as function of the magnetic field pointing to a first-order contribution to the transition. The sound damping has a Drude-like form arising as a result of hardcore magnon-magnon collisions. The strength of the coupling between lattice and magnons is estimated from the experimental data. The puzzling relationship between the transition temperature and the concentration of magnons is explained by their "relativistic" dispersion.

Localization by disorder in the infrared conductivity of (Y,Pr)Ba2Cu3O7 films

The ab-plane reflectivity of (Y{1-x}Prx)Ba2Cu3O7 thin films was measured in the 30-30000 cm-1 range for samples with x = 0 (Tc = 90 K), x = 0.4 (Tc = 35 K) and x = 0.5 (Tc = 19 K) as a function of temperature in the normal state. The effective charge density obtained from the integrated spectral weight decreases with increasing x. The variation is consistent with the higher dc resistivity for x = 0.4, but is one order of magnitude smaller than what would be expected for x = 0.5. In the latter sample, the conductivity is dominated at all temperatures by a large localization peak. Its magnitude increases as the temperature decreases. We relate this peak to the dc resistivity enhancement. A simple localization-by-disorder model accounts for the optical conductivity of the x = 0.5 sample.

Charge kinks as Raman scatterers in quarter-filled ladders

Charge kinks are considered as fundamental excitations in quarter-filled charge-ordered ladders. The strength of the coupling of the kinks to the three-dimensional lattice depends on their energy. The integrated intensity of Raman scattering by kink-antikink pairs is proportional to $ϕ^{5}$ or $ϕ^{4},$ where $ϕ$ is the order parameter. The exponent is determined by the system parameters and by the strength of the electron-phonon coupling.

Electron-phonon and spin-phonon coupling in NaV$_{2}$O$_{5}$: charge fluctuations effect

We show that the asymmetric crystal environment of the V site in the ladder compound NaV$_{2}$O$_{5}$ leads to a strong coupling of vanadium 3d electrons to phonons. This coupling causes fluctuations of the charge on the V ions, and favors a transition to a charge-ordered state at low temperatures. In the low temperature phase the charge fluctuations modulate the spin-spin superexchange interaction, resulting in a strong spin-phonon coupling.
