Analytic Expression for the Joint x and Q^2 Dependences of the Structure Functions of Deep Inelastic Scattering

We obtain a good analytic fit to the joint Bjorken-x and Q^2 dependences of ZEUS data on the deep inelastic structure function F_2(x, Q^2). At fixed virtuality Q^2, as we showed previously, our expression is an expansion in powers of log (1/x) that satisfies the Froissart bound. Here we show that for each x, the Q^2 dependence of the data is well described by an expansion in powers of log Q^2. The resulting analytic expression allows us to predict the logarithmic derivatives {({\partial}^n F_2^p/{(\partial\ln Q^2})^n)}_x for n = 1,2 and to compare the results successfully with other data. We extrapolate the proton structure function F_2^p(x,Q^2) to the very large Q^2 and the very small x regions that are inaccessible to present day experiments and contrast our expectations with those of conventional global fits of parton distribution functions.

Higgs Boson Decay into a Pair of Leptons

The decay of a Higgs boson into a pair of W bosons h --> W^+W^-, is a dominant mode for Higgs boson masses above 135 GeV. At hadron colliders, searches for this decay focus on channels in which both W bosons decay leptonically into charged leptons, h --> W^+ W^- --> l^+ l^- plus missing energy. We show that semileptonic decays of heavy flavors are an important background to this signal. Lepton isolation provides too little suppression of heavy flavor contributions, and an additional 4 to 8 orders-of-magnitude suppression must come from physics cuts. An increase of the cut on the the minimum transverse momentum of non-leading leptons in multilepton events is one effective way to achieve the needed suppression, without appreciable loss of the Higgs boson signal.

Production of Prompt Photons

After a brief review of the production dynamics of prompt single photons in hadron collisions, I summarize a new QCD calculation of the transverse momentum distribution of continuum prompt photon pairs produced by QCD subprocesses, including all-orders soft-gluon resummation valid at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. Resummation is necessary to obtain reliable predictions, as well as good agreement with data from the Fermilab Tevatron, in the range of transverse momentum where the cross section is largest. Predictions are made for the Large Hadron Collider where the QCD diphoton continuum is shown to have a softer spectrum in transverse momentum than the Higgs boson signal.

Missing heavy flavor backgrounds to Higgs boson production

We investigate characteristics of the signal and backgrounds for Higgs boson decay into WW at the Fermilab Tevatron and CERN Large Hadron Collider. In the the lepton-pair-plus-missing-energy final state, we show that the background receives an important contribution from semileptonic decays of heavy flavors. Lepton isolation cuts provide too little suppression of these heavy flavor contributions, and an additional 4 to 8 orders-of-magnitude suppression must come from physics cuts. We demonstrate that an increase of the minimum transverse momentum of nonleading leptons in multilepton events is one effective way to achieve the needed suppression, without appreciable loss of the Higgs boson signal. Such a cut would impact the efficiency of searches for supersymmetry as well. We emphasize the importance of direct measurement of the lepton background from heavy flavor production.

All-orders resummation for diphoton production at hadron colliders

We present a QCD calculation of the transverse momentum distribution of photon pairs produced at hadron colliders, including all-orders soft-gluon resummation valid at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. We specify the region of phase space in which the calculation is most reliable, compare our results with data from the Fermilab Tevatron, and make predictions for the Large Hadron Collider. The uncertainty of predictions for production of diphotons from fragmentation of final-state quarks is examined.

Overview and Charge -- Snowmass Workshop 2005

This contribution to the published Proceedings records the opening talk I presented on the first morning of the 2005 International Linear Collider Workshop in Snowmass, CO, August 14 - 27, 2005. It includes a summary of the motivation for the workshop, the scientific goals and charges for the working groups, the initial plans of the accelerator, detector, and physics groups, and the activities of the communication, education, and outreach group. This document also describes organizational aspects of the meeting, particularly the scientific committee structure, the self-organization of the working groups, the composition of the indispensable secretariat and computer support teams, and the sources of funding support. The report serves as an introduction to the proceedings whose individual papers and summary documents must be consulted for an appreciation of the accomplishments and progress made at Snowmass in 2005 toward the realization of an International Linear Collider.

Transverse momentum distribution of Upsilon production in hadronic collisions

We calculate the transverse momentum p_T distribution for production of the Upsilon states in hadronic reactions. For small $p_T (\leq M_Υ)$, we resum to all orders in the strong coupling alpha_s the process-independent large logarithmic contributions that arise from initial-state gluon showers. We demonstrate that the p_T distribution at low p_T is dominated by the region of small impact parameter b and that it may be computed reliably in perturbation theory. We express the cross section at large p_T by the alpha_s^3 lowest-order non-vanishing perturbative contribution. Our results are consistent with data from the Fermilab Tevatron collider.

Upsilon Transverse Momentum at Hadron Colliders

We predict the shape of the transverse momentum p_T spectrum of Upsilon production. The distribution at low p_T is dominated by the region of small impact parameter b and may be computed reliably in perturbation theory. We resum to all orders in the strong coupling alpha_s the process-independent large logarithmic contributions that arise from initial-state gluon showers in the small p_T (< M_Upsilon) region. The cross section at large p_T is represented by the alpha_s^3 lowest-order non-vanishing perturbative contribution.

Higgs Boson Production in Weak Boson Fusion at Next-to-Leading Order

The weak boson fusion process for neutral Higgs boson production is investigated with particular attention to the accuracy with which the Higgs boson coupling to weak bosons can be determined at CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies in final states that contain a Higgs boson plus at least two jets. Using fully differential perturbative matrix elements for the weak boson fusion signal process and for the QCD background processes, we generate events in which a Higgs boson is produced along with two jets that carry large transverse momentum. The effectiveness of different prescriptions to enhance the signal to background ratio is studied, and the expected signal purities are calculated in each case. We find that a simple cut on the rapidity of one final-state jet works well. We determine that an accuracy of delta_g/g ~ 10% on the effective coupling g may be possible after ~ 200 fb^-1 of integrated luminosity is accumulated at the LHC.

The weak boson fusion process for neutral Higgs boson production is investigated with particular attention to the accuracy with which the Higgs boson couplings to weak bosons can be determined in final states that contain a Higgs boson plus at least two jets at CERN Large Hadron Collider energies. We determine that an accuracy of δg/g ~ 10% on the effective coupling g may be possible after the accumulation of ~ 200 inverse fb of integrated luminosity.

Bounds on the Gluino Mass from a Global Parton Density Analysis

Parton distribution functions for protons are devised in which a light gluino is included along with standard model quark, antiquark, and gluon constituents. A global analysis of a large set of hadronic scattering data provides empirical constraints on the allowed range of the gluino mass as a function of the value of the strong coupling strength alpha_s(M_Z). We find that the gluino mass m_{\widetilde{g}} > 12 GeV for the standard model world-average value alpha_{s}(M_{Z})=0.118. Gluino masses as small as 10 GeV are admissible provided that alpha_s(M_Z) > 0.12, about one standard deviation above the world-average value. Current hadron scattering data are insensitive to the presence of gluinos heavier than about 100 - 150 GeV.

Light Gluino Constituents of Hadrons and a Global Analysis of Hadron Scattering Data

Light strongly interacting supersymmetric particles may be treated as partonic constituents of nucleons in high energy scattering processes. We construct parton distribution functions for protons in which a light gluino is included along with standard model quark, antiquark, and gluon constituents. A global analysis is performed of a large set of data from deep-inelastic lepton scattering, massive lepton pair and vector boson production, and hadron jet production at large values of transverse momentum. Constraints are obtained on the allowed range of gluino mass as a function of the value of the strong coupling strength alpha_s(M_Z) determined at the scale of the Z boson mass. We find that gluino masses as small as 10 GeV are admissible provided that alpha_s(M_Z) \ge 0.12. Current hadron scattering data are insensitive to the presence of gluinos heavier than ~ 100 - 150 GeV.

Lower limits on R-parity-violating couplings in supersymmetric models with light squarks

We interpret the results of searches for strongly interacting massive particles to place absolute lower limits on R-parity-violating couplings for squarks with mass (m_\tilde{q}) below 100 GeV. Recent searches for anomalous isotopes require that there be a baryon-number-violating or lepton-number-violating coupling larger than 10^{-22} -- 10^{-21} if m_\tilde{q} > 18 GeV. Using data from searches for stable particles at the CERN Large Electron Positron collider (LEP) we demonstrate that this lower limit increases by 14 orders of magnitude, to an R-parity-violating coupling larger than 10^{-8} -- 10^{-7} for any squarks of mass less than 90 GeV. In the presence of an R-parity-violating coupling of this magnitude, neutralinos cannot explain the dark matter density in the Universe.

Squark Mixing in Electron-Positron Reactions

Squark mixing plays a large role in the phenomenology of the minimal supersymmetric standard model, determining the mass of the lightest Higgs boson and the electroweak interactions of the squarks themselves. We examine how mixing may be investigated in high energy $e^+ e^-$ reactions, both at LEP-II and the proposed linear collider. In particular, off-diagonal production of one lighter and one heavier squark allows one to measure the squark mixing angle, and would allow one to test the mass relations for the light Higgs boson. In some cases off-diagonal production may provide the best prospects to discover supersymmetry. In the context of the light bottom squark scenario, we show that existing data from LEP-II should show definitive evidence for the heavier bottom squark provided that its mass $m_{\tilde{b}_2} \le 120$ GeV.

Differential Cross Sections for Higgs Boson Production at Tevatron Collider Energies

The transverse momentum $Q_T$ distribution is computed for inclusive Higgs boson production at $\sqrt{S} = 1.96$ TeV. We include all-orders resummation of large logarithms associated with emission of soft gluons at small $Q_T$. We provide results for Higgs boson and $Z^*$ masses from $M_Z$ to 200 GeV. The relatively hard transverse momentum distribution for Higgs boson production suggests possibilities for improvement of the signal to background ratio.

Differential Cross Section for Higgs Boson Production Including All-Orders Soft Gluon Resummation

The transverse momentum $Q_T$ distribution is computed for inclusive Higgs boson production at the energy of the CERN Large Hadron Collider. We focus on the dominant gluon-gluon subprocess in perturbative quantum chromodynamics and incorporate contributions from the quark-gluon and quark-antiquark channels. Using an impact-parameter $b$-space formalism, we include all-orders resummation of large logarithms associated with emission of soft gluons. Our resummed results merge smoothly at large $Q_T$ with the fixed-order expectations in perturbative quantum chromodynamics, as they should, with no need for a matching procedure. They show a high degree of stability with respect to variation of parameters associated with the non-perturbative input at low $Q_T$. We provide distributions $dσ/dy dQ_T$ for Higgs boson masses from $M_Z$ to 200 GeV. The average transverse momentum at zero rapidity $y$ grows approximately linearly with mass of the Higgs boson over the range $M_Z < m_h <200$ GeV, $ \simeq 0.18 m_h + 18 $~GeV. We provide analogous results for $Z$ boson production, for which we compute $ \simeq 25$ GeV. The harder transverse momentum distribution for the Higgs boson arises because there is more soft gluon radiation in Higgs boson production than in $Z$ production.

Radiative decay of Upsilon(nS) into S-wave sbottomonium

A calculation is presented of the radiative decay of the Upsilon(nS) into a bound state of bottom squarks. Predictions are provided of the branching fraction as a function of the masses of the bottom squark and the gluino. Branching fractions as large as several times 10^{-4} are obtained for supersymmetric particle masses in the range suggested by the analysis of bottom-quark production cross sections. Data are shown that limit the range of allowed masses. Forthcoming high-statistics data from the CLEO Collaboration offer possibilities of discovery or significant new bounds on the existence and masses of supersymmetric particles.

Higgs Boson Decay into Hadronic Jets

The remarkable agreement of electroweak data with standard model (SM) predictions motivates the study of extensions of the SM in which the Higgs boson is light and couples in a standard way to the weak gauge bosons. Postulated new light particles should have small couplings to the gauge bosons. Within this context it is natural to assume that the branching fractions of the light SM-like Higgs boson mimic those in the standard model. This assumption may be unwarranted, however, if there are non-standard light particles coupled weakly to the gauge bosons but strongly to the Higgs field. In particular, the Higgs boson may effectively decay into hadronic jets, possibly without important bottom or charm flavor content. As an example, we present a simple extension of the SM, in which the predominant decay of the Higgs boson occurs into a pair of light bottom squarks that, in turn, manifest themselves as hadronic jets. Discovery of the Higgs boson remains possible at an electron-positron linear collider, but prospects at hadron colliders are diminished substantially.
