Hadronic decays of $\bm{χ_{bJ}}$ into light bottom squarks

We calculate the rates for inclusive hadronic decay of the three $χ_{bJ}$ states into a pair of light bottom squarks as a function of the masses of the bottom squark and the gluino. We include color-singlet and color-octet configurations. The color-octet contribution is found to be insignificant for the $χ_{b0}$ but can dominate in the $χ_{b2}$ case if current lattice estimates are used for the color-octet matrix element. In comparison with the standard model values, bottom squark decays can increase the predicted hadronic width of the $χ_{b0}$ by as much as 35%, for very small bottom squark masses and gluino masses in the range of 12 GeV, but make a small contribution in the cases of $χ_{b1}$ and $χ_{b2}$. Data from decays of the $χ_{bJ}$ states could provide significant new bounds on the existence and masses of supersymmetric particles.

The Puzzle of the Bottom Quark Production Cross Section

The production rate of bottom quarks at hadron colliders exceeds the expectations of next-to-leading order perturbative quantum chromodynamics. An additional contribution from pair-production of light gluinos, of mass 12 to 16 GeV, with two-body decays into bottom quarks and light bottom squarks, yields a differential cross section for bottom quarks in better agreement with data. The masses of the gluino and bottom squark are restricted further by the ratio of like-sign to opposite-sign leptons at hadron colliders. Restrictions on this scenario from other data are summarized, and predictions are made for other processes such as Upsilon decay into a pair of bottom squarks.

Supersymmetry Explanation for the Puzzling Bottom Quark Production Cross Section

It has been known for a long time that the cross section for bottom-quark $b$ production at hadron collider energies exceeds theoretical expectations. An additional contribution from pair-production of light gluinos $\tilde{g}$, of mass 12 to 16 GeV, with two-body decays into bottom quarks and light bottom squarks $\tilde{b}$, helps to obtain a $b$ production rate in better agreement with data. The masses of the $\tilde{g}$ and $\tilde{b}$ are restricted further by the ratio of like-sign to opposite-sign leptons at hadron colliders. Constraints on this scenario from other data are examined, and predictions are made for various processes such as Upsilon decay into $\tilde{b}'s$.

QCD Factorized Drell-Yan Cross Section at Large Transverse Momentum

We derive a new factorization formula in perturbative quantum chromodynamics for the Drell-Yan massive lepton-pair cross section as a function of the transverse momentum $Q_T$ of the pair. When $Q_T$ is much larger than the pair's invariant mass $Q$, this factorization formula systematically resums the logarithmic contributions of the type $α_s^m \ln^m(Q_T^2/Q^2)$ to all orders in the strong coupling $α_s$. When $Q_T\sim Q$, our formula yields the same Drell-Yan cross section as conventional fixed order QCD perturbation theory. We show that resummation is important when the collision energy $\sqrt{S}$ is large enough and $Q_T\gg Q$, and we argue that perturbative expansions are more stable and reliable in terms of the modified factorization formula.

Upsilon Decay to a Pair of Bottom Squarks

We calculate the rate for $Υ$ decay into a pair of bottom squarks as a function of the masses of the bottom squark and the gluino. Data from decays of the $Υ$ states could provide significant new bounds on the existence and masses of these supersymmetric particles.

Direct probes of R-parity-violating supersymmetric couplings via single-top-squark production

We study the s-channel production of a single top squark in hadron collisions through an R-parity-violating mechanism, examining in detail the case in which the squark decays through an R-parity-conserving process into a bottom quark, a lepton, and missing energy. We show that the top squark can be discovered if its mass is less than 400 GeV, or that the current bound on the size of the R-parity-violating couplings can be reduced by up to one order of magnitude with existing data and by two orders of magnitude at the forthcoming run II of the Fermilab Tevatron.

Supersymmetry Contribution to Bottom Quark Production at Hadron Colliders

A new contribution from pair-production of light gluinos, of mass 12 to 16 GeV, with two-body decays into bottom quarks and light bottom squarks, helps to obtain a bottom-quark production rate in better agreement with hadron collider data. The masses of the gluino and bottom squark are further restricted by the ratio of like-sign to opposite-sign leptons at hadron colliders. Constraints on this scenario from other data are examined and predictions are made.

Predictions for associated production of gauginos and gluinos at NLO in SUSY-QCD

NLO SUSY-QCD contributions to associated production of gluinos and gauginos are shown to enhance the cross sections by about 10% at the Tevatron and by as much as a factor of two at the LHC. They shift the mass determinations or discovery limits, soften the $p_T$ spectra, and stabilize the predictions against variations of the renormalization and factorization scales.

Next-to-Leading Order SUSY-QCD Predictions for Associated Production of Gauginos and Gluinos

We present complete results of a next-to-leading order calculation of the production of gaugino-like charginos ($\chargino$) and neutralinos ($\neutralino$) in association with gluinos ($\gluino$) at hadron colliders, including the strong corrections from the exchange of colored particles and sparticles. Adopting a variety of models for the sparticle mass spectrum, including typical supergravity (SUGRA) models and a light gluino model, we provide predictions for total and differential cross sections at the energies of the Fermilab Tevatron and CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

Top Spin and Experimental Tests

We examine pair mass dependence near threshold as a means to measure the spin of the top quark in hadron collisions, and we discuss the possibility that a top squark signal could be hidden among the top events.

Longitudinal Spin Dependence of Massive Lepton Pair Production

We show that massive lepton-pair production, the Drell-Yan process, should be a good source of independent constraints on the polarized gluon density, free from the experimental and theoretical complications of photon isolation that beset studies of prompt photon production. We provide predictions for the spin-averaged and spin-dependent differential cross sections as a function of transverse momentum $Q_T$ at energies relevant for the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven.

Single-top-squark production via R-parity-violating supersymmetric couplings in hadron collisions

Single-top-squark production via q q' -> \bar{\tilde{t_1}} probes R-parity-violating extensions of the minimal supersymmetric standard model though the λ''_{3ij} couplings. For masses in the range 180-325 GeV, and λ''_{3ij} > 0.02-0.06, we show that discovery of the top squark is possible with 2 fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity at run II of the Fermilab Tevatron. The bound on λ''_{3ij}$ can be reduced by up to an order of magnitude with existing data from run I, and by two orders of magnitude at run II if the top squark is not found.

Spin Dependence of Massive Lepton Pair Production in Proton-Proton Collisions

We calculate the transverse momentum distribution for the production of massive lepton-pairs in longitudinally polarized proton-proton reactions at collider energies within the context of perturbative quantum chromodynamics. For values of the transverse momentum Q_T greater than roughly half the pair mass Q, Q_T > Q/2, we show that the differential cross section is dominated by subprocesses initiated by incident gluons, provided that the polarized gluon density is not too small. Massive lepton-pair differential cross sections should be a good source of independent constraints on the polarized gluon density, free from the experimental and theoretical complications of photon isolation that beset studies of prompt photon production. We provide predictions for the spin-averaged and spin-dependent differential cross sections as a function of Q_T at energies relevant for the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven, and we compare these with predictions for real prompt photon production.

Associated Production of Gauginos and Gluinos at Hadron Colliders in Next-to-Leading Order SUSY-QCD

We report a next-to-leading order (NLO) calculation of the production of gaugino-like charginos ($\chargino$) and neutralinos ($\neutralino$) in association with gluinos ($\gluino$) at hadron colliders, including the strong corrections from colored particles and sparticles. We predict inclusive cross sections at the Fermilab Tevatron and CERN LHC. The NLO cross sections are more stable against variations in the hard-scattering scale parameter and are greater than the LO values.

We summarize the status of next-to-leading order perturbative quantum chromodynamics (pQCD) calculations of the cross sections for the production of squarks, gluinos, neutralinos, charginos, and sleptons as a function of the produced sparticle masses in proton-antiproton collisions at the hadronic center-of-mass energy 2 TeV.

Scale Dependence of Squark and Gluino Production Cross Sections

We investigate the choice of the renormalization and factorization scales for the production of squarks and gluinos at the Fermilab Tevatron collider as a function of the produced sparticle masses. We determine a scale to be used in leading-order perturbative QCD calculations optimized such that the normalization of the next-to-leading order cross section is reproduced. Use of this optimal scale permits at least a partial implementation of next-to-leading order contributions in leading order Monte Carlo simulations. We provide next-to-leading order predictions of the production cross sections for pairs of supersymmetric particles at the hadronic center-of-mass energy 2 TeV.

Massive Lepton Pairs as a Prompt Photon Surrogate

We discuss the transverse momentum distribution for the production of massive lepton-pairs in hadron reactions at fixed target and collider energies within the context of next-to-leading order perturbative quantum chromodynamics. For values of the transverse momentum $Q_T$ greater than the pair mass $Q$, $Q_T > Q$, we show that the differential cross section is dominated by subprocesses initiated by incident gluons. Massive lepton-pair differential cross sections are an advantageous source of constraints on the gluon density, free from the experimental and theoretical complications of photon isolation that beset studies of prompt photon production. We compare calculations with data and provide predictions for the differential cross section as a function of $Q_T$ in proton-antiproton reactions at center-of-mass energies of 1.8 TeV, and in proton-nucleon reactions at fixed target and LHC energies.

Spin Dependence of Associated Production of a Prompt Photon and a Charm Quark at Next-to-Leading Order in QCD

A second order, $O(α^2_s)$, calculation in perturbative quantum chromodynamics is presented of the longitudinal spin dependence of the cross section for the two particle inclusive reaction $p + p \to γ+ c + X$ for large values of the transverse momentum of the prompt photon and charm quark. Differential distributions are provided for the spin-averaged cross section and for the two-spin longitudinal polarization asymmetry $A_{LL}$ at the energy of the Brookhaven Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. An assessment is given of the prospects for determination of the spin dependence of the charm quark density.
