On the Hilbert scheme of smooth curves of degree $15$ and genus $14$ in $\mathbb{P}^5$

We denote by $\mathcal{H}_{d,g,r}$ the Hilbert scheme of smooth curves, which is the union of components whose general point corresponds to a smooth irreducible and non-degenerate curve of degree $d$ and genus $g$ in $\mathbb{P}^r$. In this article, we show that $\mathcal{H}_{15,14,5}$ is non empty and reducible with two components of the expected dimension hence generically reduced. We also study the birationality of the moduli map up to projective motion and several key properties such as gonality of a general element as well as specifying smooth elements of each components.

Partially symmetric tensors and the non-defectivity of secant varieties of products with a projective line as a factor

We prove (with a mild restriction on the multidegrees) that all secant varieties of Segre-Veronese varieties with $k>2$ factors, $k-2$ of them being $\mathbb{P}^1$, have the expected dimension. This is equivalent to compute the dimension of the set of all partially symmetric tensors with a fixed rank and the same format. The proof uses the case $k=2$ proved by Galuppi and Oneto. Our theorem is an easy consequence of a theorem proved here for arbitrary projective varieties with a projective line as a factor and with respect to complete linear systems.

Terracini loci of curves

We study subsets S of curves X whose double structure does not impose independent conditions to a linear series L, but there are divisors D in |L| singular at all points of S. These subsets form the Terracini loci of X. We investigate Terracini loci, with a special look towards their non-emptiness, mainly in the case of canonical curves, and in the case of space curves.

A note on very ample Terracini loci

In this short note we show that, for any ample embedding of a variety of dimension at least two in a projective space, all high enough degree Veronese re-embeddings have non-empty Terracini loci.

On the Koiran-Skomra's question about Hessians

We give a negative answer to a question of Koiran and Skomra about Hessians, motivated by Kayal's algorithm for the equivalence problem to the Fermat polynomial. We conjecture that our counterexamples are the only ones. We also study a local version of their question.

Twistor geometry of the Flag manifold

A study is made of algebraic curves and surfaces in the flag manifold $\mathbb{F}=SU(3)/T^2$, and their configuration relative to the twistor projection $π$ from $\mathbb{F}$ to the complex projective plane $\mathbb{CP}^2$, defined with the help of an anti-holomorphic involution $j$. This is motivated by analogous studies of algebraic surfaces of low degree in the twistor space $\mathbb{CP}^3$ of $S^4$. Deformations of twistor fibres project to real surfaces in $\mathbb{CP}^2$, whose metric geometry is investigated. Attention is then focussed on toric Del Pezzo surfaces that are the simplest type of surfaces in $\mathbb{F}$ of bidegree $(1,1)$. These surfaces define orthogonal complex structures on specified dense open subsets of $\mathbb{CP}^2$ relative to its Fubini-Study metric. The discriminant loci of various surfaces of bidegree $(1,1)$ are determined, and bounds given on the number of twistor fibres that are contained in more general algebraic surfaces in $\mathbb{F}$.

Lagrangian skeleta, collars and duality

We present a geometric realization of the duality between skeleta in $T^*\mathbb P^n$ and collars of local surfaces. Such duality is predicted by combining two auxiliary types of duality: on one side, symplectic duality between $T^*\mathbb P^n$ and a crepant resolution of the $A_n$ singularity; on the other side, toric duality between two types of isolated quotient singularities. We give a correspondence between Lagrangian submanifolds of the cotangent bundle and vector bundles on collars, and describe those birational transformations within the skeleton which are dual to deformations of vector bundles.

Surfaces in the flag threefold containing smooth conics and twistor fibers

We study smooth integral curves of bidegree $(1,1)$, called \textit{smooth conics}, in the flag threefold $\mathbb{F}$. The study is motivated by the fact that the family of smooth conics contains the set of fibers of the twistor projection $\mathbb{F}\to\mathbb{CP}^{2}$. We give a bound on the maximum number of smooth conics contained in a smooth surface $S\subset\mathbb{F}$. Then, we show qualitative properties of algebraic surfaces containing a prescribed number of smooth conics. Lastly, we study surfaces containing infinitely many twistor fibers. We show that the only smooth cases are surfaces of bidegree $(1,1)$. Then, for any integer $a>1$, we exhibit a method to construct an integral surface of bidegree $(a,a)$ containing infinitely many twistor fibers.

On the existence of finite surjective parametrizations of affine surfaces

We investigate surjective parametrizations of rational algebraic varieties, in the vein of recent work by Jorge Caravantes, J. Rafael Sendra, David Sevilla, and Carlos Villarino. In particular, we show how to construct plenty of examples of affine surfaces $S$ not admitting a finite surjective morphism $f: \mathbb{A}^2 \to S$.

Finite $0$-dimensional multiprojective schemes and their ideals

We study finite $0$-dimensional schemes in product of multiprojective spaces and their ideals. In particular, we describe the set of generators of the ideal defining a $0$-dimensional scheme in the case $\mathbb P^{1}\times\cdots \times\mathbb P^{1}$ and in the case $\mathbb P^{n_1}\times \cdots \times \mathbb P^{n_k}$ with $n_i\in \{1,2\}$ for all $i$. We also check very ampleness for zero-dimensional schemes of general points in the multiprojective spaces.

The set of forms with bounded strength is not closed

The strength of a homogeneous polynomial (or form) is the smallest length of an additive decomposition expressing it whose summands are reducible forms. Using polynomial functors, we show that the set of forms with bounded strength is not always Zariski-closed. More specifically, if the ground field is algebraically closed, we prove that the set of quartics with strength $\leq3$ is not Zariski-closed for a large number of variables.

The Hilbert function of general unions of lines and double lines in the projective space

We study the Hilbert function of a general union $X\subset \mathbb{P}^3$ of $x$ double lines and $y$ lines. In many cases (e.g. always for $x=2$ and $y\ge 3$ or for $x=3$ and $y\ge 2$ or for $x\ge 4$ and $y\ge \lceil(\binom{3x+4}{3} -27x-12)/(3x+2)\rceil +3-x$) we prove that $X$ has maximal rank. We give a few examples of $x$ and $y$ for which $X$ has not maximal rank.

The normal map for plane curves and pathologies in positive characteristic

We study the normal map for plane projective curves, i.e., the map associating to every regular point of the curve the normal line at the point in the dual space. We first observe that the normal map is always birational and then we use this fact to show that for smooth curves of degree higher than four the normal map uniquely determines the curve. Our proof works in characteristic zero and in positive characteristic higher than the degree of the curve. We notice also that in high characteristic strange curves provide examples of different plane curves with same curve of normal lines. We will reinterpret our results also in the modern terminology of bottlenecks of algebraic curves.

On the secant varieties of tangential varieties

Let $X\subset \mathbb{P}^r$ be an integral and non-degenerate variety. Let $σ_{a,b}(X)\subseteq \mathbb{P}^r$, $(a,b)\in \mathbb{N}^2$, be the join of $a$ copies of $X$ and $b$ copies of the tangential variety of $X$. Using the classical Alexander-Hirschowitz theorem (case $b=0$) and a recent paper by H. Abo and N. Vannieuwenhoven (case $a=0$) we compute $\dim σ_{a,b}(X)$ in many cases when $X$ is the $d$-Veronese embedding of $\mathbb{P}^n$. This is related to certain additive decompositions of homogeneous polynomials. We give a general theorem proving that $\dim σ_{0,b}(X)$ is the expected one when $X=Y\times \mathbb{P}^1$ has a suitable Segre-Veronese style embedding in $\mathbb{P}^r$. As a corollary we prove that if $d_i\ge 3$, $1\le i \le n$, and $(d_1+1)(d_2+1)\ge 38$ the tangential variety of $(\mathbb{P}^1)^n$ embedded by $|\mathcal{O} _{(\mathbb{P} ^1)^n}(d_1,\dots ,d_n)|$ is not defective and a similar statement for $\mathbb{P}^n\times \mathbb{P}^1$. For an arbitrary $X$ and an ample line bundle $L$ on $X$ we prove the existence of an integer $k_0$ such that for all $t\ge k_0$ the tangential variety of $X$ with respect to $|L^{\otimes t}|$ is not defective.

Strength and slice rank of forms are generically equal

We prove that strength and slice rank of homogeneous polynomials of degree $d \geq 5$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero coincide generically. To show this, we establish a conjecture of Catalisano, Geramita, Gimigliano, Harbourne, Migliore, Nagel and Shin concerning dimensions of secant varieties of the varieties of reducible homogeneous polynomials. These statements were already known in degrees $2\leq d\leq 7$ and $d=9$.
