Extending infinitely many times arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay and Gorenstein subvarieties of projective spaces

We give examples of infinitely extendable (not as cones) arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay and arithmetically Gorenstein subvarieties of projective spaces and which are not complete intersections. The proof uses the computation of the dimension of the Hilbert scheme of codimension $2$ subschemes of projective spaces due to G. Ellingsrud and of arithmetically Gorenstein codimension $3$ subschemes due to J. O. Kleppe and R.-M. Miró-Roig.

Identifiability of rank-3 tensors

Rank-2 and rank-3 tensors are almost all identifiable with only few exceptions. We classify them all together with the dimensions and the structures of all the sets evincing the rank.

Steiner Configurations ideals: containment and colouring

Given a homogeneous ideal $I \subseteq k[x_0,\dots,x_n]$, the Containment problem studies the relation between symbolic and regular powers of $I$, that is, it asks for which pair $m, r \in \mathbb{N}$, $I^{(m)} \subseteq I^r$ holds. In the last years, several conjectures have been posed on this problem, creating an active area of current interests and ongoing investigations. In this paper, we investigated the Stable Harbourne Conjecture and the Stable Harbourne -- Huneke Conjecture and we show that they hold for the defining ideal of a Complement of a Steiner configuration of points in $\mathbb{P}^{n}_{k}$. We can also show that the ideal of a Complement of a Steiner Configuration of points has expected resurgence, that is, its resurgence is strictly less than its big height, and it also satisfies Chudnovsky and Demailly's Conjectures. Moreover, given a hypergraph $H$, we also study the relation between its colourability and the failure of the containment problem for the cover ideal associated to $H$. We apply these results in the case that $H$ is a Steiner System.

20 open questions about deformations of compactifiable manifolds

Deformation theory of complex manifolds is a classical subject with recent new advances in the noncompact case using both algebraic and analytic methods. In this note, we recall some concepts of the existing theory and introduce new notions of deformations for manifolds with boundary, for compactifiable manifolds, and for $q$-concave spaces. We highlight some of the possible applications and give a list of open questions which we intend as a guide for further research in this rich and beautiful subject.

On the Terracini locus of projective varieties

We introduce and study properties of the Terracini locus of projective varieties X, which is the locus of finite subsets S of X such that 2S fails to impose independent conditions to a linear system L. Terracini loci are relevant in the study of interpolation problems over double points in special position, but they also enter naturally in the study of special loci contained in secant varieties to projective varieties. We find some criteria which exclude that a set S belongs to the Terracini locus. Furthermore, in the case where X is a Veronese variety, we bound the dimension of the Terracini locus and we determine examples in which the locus has codimension 1 in the symmetric product of X.

The maximal genus of space curves in the range A

Fix positive integers d;m such that $(m^2+4m+6)/6 \leq d < (m^2+4m+6)/3$ (the so-called Range A for space curves). Let G(d;m) be the maximal genus of a smooth and connected curve, of degree d, $C \subset P^3$ such that $h^0(I_C(m-1)) = 0$. Here we prove that $G(d,m) = 1+(m-1)d -\binom{m+2}{3}$ if $m\ge 13.8\cdot 10^5$.

Birational geometry of defective varieties, II

Let $X \subset \mathbb{P}^r$ be smooth and irreducible and for $k \ge 0$ let $ν_k(X)$ (resp., $δ_k(X)$) be the $k$-th contact (resp., the $k$-th secant) defect of $X$. For all $k \ge 0$ we have the inequality $ν_k(X) \ge δ_k(X)$ and in the case $k=1$ we characterize projective varieties $X$ for which equality holds, $\dim \mathrm{Sing}(X) \le δ_1(X) -1$ and the generic tangential contact locus is reducible.

Steiner systems and configurations of points

The aim of this paper is to make a connection between design theory and algebraic geometry/commutative algebra. In particular, given any Steiner System $S(t,n,v)$ we associate two ideals, in a suitable polynomial ring, defining a Steiner configuration of points and its Complement. We focus on the latter, studying its homological invariants, such as Hilbert Function and Betti numbers. We also study symbolic and regular powers associated to the ideal defining a Complement of a Steiner configuration of points, finding its Waldschmidt constant, regularity, bounds on its resurgence and asymptotic resurgence. We also compute the parameters of linear codes associated to any Steiner configuration of points and its Complement.

Geometric conditions for strict submultiplicativity of rank and border rank

The $X$-rank of a point $p$ in projective space is the minimal number of points of an algebraic variety $X$ whose linear span contains $p$. This notion is naturally submultiplicative under tensor product. We study geometric conditions that guarantee strict submultiplicativity. We prove that in the case of points of rank two, strict submultiplicativity is entirely characterized in terms of the trisecant lines to the variety. Moreover, we focus on the case of curves: we prove that for curves embedded in an even-dimensional projective space, there are always points for which strict submultiplicativity occurs, with the only exception of rational normal curves.

On the Hilbert function of general unions of curves in projective spaces

Let $X=X_1\cup \cdots \cup X_s\subset \mathbb {P}^n$, $n\ge 4$, be a general union of smooth non-special curves with $X_i$ of degree $d_i$ and genus $g_i$ and $d_i\ge \max \{2g_i-1,g_i+n\}$ if $g_i>0$. We prove that $X$ has maximal rank, i.e. for any $t\in \mathbb {N}$ either $h^0(\mathcal{I}_X(t))=0$ or $h^1(\mathcal{I}_X(t))=0$.

Injective linear series of algebraic curves on quadrics

We study linear series on curves inducing injective morphisms to projective space, using zero-dimensional schemes and cohomological vanishings. Albeit projections of curves and their singularities are of central importance in algebraic geometry, basic problems still remain unsolved. In this note, we study cuspidal projections of space curves lying on irreducible quadrics (in arbitrary characteristic).

On the Hilbert function of intersections of a hypersurface with general reducible curves

Let $W\subset \mathbb {P}^n$, $n\ge 3$, be a degree $k$ hypersurface. Consider a "general" reducible, but connected, curve $Y\subset \mathbb {P}^n$, for instance a sufficiently general connected and nodal union of lines with $p_a(Y)=0$, i.e. a tree of lines. We study the Hilbert function of the set $Y\cap W$ with cardinality $k°(Y)$ and prove when it is the expected one. We give complete classification of the exceptions for $k=2$ and for $n=k=3$. We apply these results and tools to the case in which $Y$ is a smooth curve with $\mathcal {O}_Y(1)$ non-special.

The strength for line bundles

We introduce the strength for sections of a line bundle on an algebraic variety. This generalizes the strength of homogeneous polynomials that has been recently introduced to resolve Stillman's conjecture, an important problem in commutative algebra. We establish the first properties of this notion and give some tool to obtain upper bounds on the strength in this framework. Moreover, we show some results on the usual strength such as the reducibility of the set of strength two homogeneous polynomials.

Linearly dependent and concise subsets of a Segre variety depending on k factors

We study linearly dependent subsets with prescribed cardinality, $s$, of a multiprojective space. If the set $S$ is a circuit, we give an upper bound on the number of factors of the minimal multiprojective space containing $S$, while if $S$ has higher dependency this may be not true without strong assumptions. We describe the dependent subsets $S$ with $\#S=6$.

Tensor decompositions in rank +1

We prove (without exceptions) the existence of irredundant tensor decompositions with the number of addenda equal to rank $+1$. We also discuss the existence of decompositions with more than the tensor rank terms, which are concise, while the original tensor is not concise.

Linear dependent subsets of Segre varieties

We study the linear algebra of finite subsets $S$ of a Segre variety $X$. In particular we classify the pairs $(S,X)$ with $S$ linear dependent and $\#(S)\le 5$. We consider an additional condition for linear dependent sets (no two of their points are contained in a line of $X$) and get far better lower bounds for $\#(S)$ in term of the dimension and number of the factors of $X$. In this discussion and in the classification of the case $\#(S)= 5$, $X\cong \mathbb {P}^1\times \mathbb {P}^1\times \mathbb {P}^1$ we use the rational normal curves
