aCM vector bundles on projective surfaces of nonnegative Kodaira dimension

In this paper we contribute to the construction of families of arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (aCM) indecomposable vector bundles on a wide range of polarized surfaces $(X,\Oo_X(1))$ for $\Oo_X(1)$ an ample line bundle. In many cases, we show that for every positive integer $r$ there exists a family of indecomposable aCM vector bundles of rank $r$, depending roughly on $r$ parameters, and in particular they are of \emph{wild representation type}. We also introduce a general setting to study the complexity of a polarized variety $(X,\Oo_X(1))$ with respect to its category of aCM vector bundles. In many cases we construct indecomposable vector bundles on $X$ which are aCM for all ample line bundles on $X$.

A Lie theoretical construction of a Landau-Ginzburg model without projective mirrors

We describe the Fukaya-Seidel category of a Landau-Ginzburg model LG(2) for the semisimple adjoint orbit of sl(2,C). We prove that this category is equivalent to a full triangulated subcategory of the category of coherent sheaves on the second Hirzebruch surface. We show that no projective variety can be mirror to LG(2), and that this remains so after compactification.

Generic Power Sum Decompositions and Bounds for the Waring Rank

A notion of open rank, related with generic power sum decompositions of forms, has recently been introduced in the literature. The main result here is that the maximum open rank for plane quartics is eight. In particular, this gives the first example of $n,d$, such that the maximum open rank for degree $d$ forms that essentially depend on $n$ variables is strictly greater than the maximum rank. On one hand, the result allows to improve the previously known bounds on open rank, but on the other hand indicates that such bounds are likely quite relaxed. Nevertheless, some of the preparatory results are of independent interest, and still may provide useful information in connection with the problem of finding the maximum rank for the set of all forms of given degree and number of variables. For instance, we get that every ternary forms of degree $d\ge 3$ can be annihilated by the product of $d-1$ pairwise independent linear forms.

ACM sheaves on the double plane

The goal of this paper is to start a study of aCM and Ulrich sheaves on non-integral projective varieties. We show that any aCM vector bundle of rank two on the double plane is a direct sum of line bundles. As a by-product, any aCM vector bundle of rank two on a sufficiently high dimensional quadric hypersurface also splits. We consider aCM and Ulrich vector bundles on a multiple hyperplanes and prove the existence of such bundles that do not split, if the multiple hyperplane is linearly embedded into a sufficiently high dimensional projective space. Then we restrict our attention to the double plane and give a classification of aCM sheaves of rank at most $3/2$ on the double plane and describe the family of isomorphism classes of them.

Maximal rank of space curves in the range A

We prove the following statement, which has been conjectured since 1985: There exists a constant $K$ such that for all natural numbers $d,g$ with $g\le Kd^{3/2}$ there exists an irreducible component of the Hilbert scheme of $\mathbb{P}^3$ whose general element is a smooth, connected curve of degree $d$ and genus $g$ of maximal rank.

On the ranks of the third secant variety of Segre-Veronese embeddings

We give an upper bound for the rank of the border rank 3 partially symmetric tensors. In the special case of border rank 3 tensors $T\in V_1\otimes \cdots \otimes V_k$ (Segre case) we can show that all ranks among 3 and $k-1$ arise and if $\dim V_i \geq 3$ for all $i$'s, then also all the ranks between $k$ and $2k-1$ arise.

On the dimension of contact loci and the identifiability of tensors

Let $X\subset \mathbb{P}^r$ be an integral and non-degenerate variety. Set $n:= \dim (X)$. We prove that if the $(k+n-1)$-secant variety of $X$ has (the expected) dimension $(k+n-1)(n+1)-1<r$ and $X$ is not uniruled by lines, then $X$ is not $k$-weakly defective and hence the $k$-secant variety satisfies identifiability, i.e. a general element of it is in the linear span of a unique $S\subset X$ with $\sharp (S) =k$. We apply this result to many Segre-Veronese varieties and to the identifiability of Gaussian mixtures $G_{1,d}$. If $X$ is the Segre embedding of a multiprojective space we prove identifiability for the $k$-secant variety (assuming that the $(k+n-1)$-secant variety has dimension $(k+n-1)(n+1)-1<r$, this is a known result in many cases), beating several bounds on the identifiability of tensors.

Ranks on the boundaries of secant varieties

In many cases (e.g. for many Segre or Segre embeddings of multiprojective spaces) we prove that a hypersurface of the $b$-secant variety of $X\subset \mathbb {P}^r$ has $X$-rank $>b$. We prove it proving that the $X$-rank of a general point of the join of $b-2$ copies of $X$ and the tangential variety of $X$ is $>b$.

$2$-nilpotent co-Higgs structures

A co-Higgs sheaf is a pair of a torsion-free coherent sheaf $\mathcal{E}$ and a global section of $\mathcal{E}nd(\mathcal{E})\otimes T_X$ with $T_X$ the tangent bundle. We construct $2$-nilpotent co-Higgs sheaves of rank two for some rational surfaces and of rank three for $\mathbb{P}^3$, using the Hartshorne-Serre correspondence. Then we investigate the non-existence, specially over projective spaces.

Bounds on the tensor rank

We give a sufficient criterion for a lower bound of the cactus rank of a tensor. Then we refine that criterion in order to be able to give an explicit sufficient condition for a non-redundant decomposition of a tensor to be minimal and unique.

Existence of nontrivial logarithmic co-Higgs structure on curves

We study various aspects on nontrivial logarithmic co-Higgs structure associated to unstable bundles on algebraic curves. We check several criteria for (non-)existence of nontrivial logarithmic co-Higgs structures and describe their parameter spaces. We also investigate the Segre invariants of these structures and see their non-simplicity. In the end we also study the higher dimensional case, specially when the tangent bundle is not semistable.

The stratification by rank for homogeneous polynomials with border rank 5 which essentially depend on 5 variables

We give the stratification by the symmetric tensor rank of all degree $d \ge 9$ homogeneous polynomials with border rank $5$ and which depend essentially on at least 5 variables, extending previous works (A. Bernardi, A. Gimigliano, M. Idà, E. Ballico) on lower border ranks. For the polynomials which depend on at least 5 variables only 5 ranks are possible: $5$, $d+3$, $2d+1$, $3d-1$, $4d-3$, but each of the ranks $3d-1$ and $2d+1$ is achieved in two geometrically different situations. These ranks are uniquely determined by a certain degree 5 zero-dimensional scheme $A$ associated to the polynomial. The polynomial $f$ depends essentially on at least 5 variables if and only if $A$ is linearly independent (in all cases $f$ essentially depends on exactly 5 variables). The polynomial has rank $4d-3$ (resp $3d-1$, resp. $2d+1$, resp. $d+3$, resp. $5$) if $A$ has $1$ (resp. $2$, resp. $3$, resp. $4$, resp. $5$) connected components. The assumption $d\ge 9$ guarantees that each polynomial has a uniquely determined associated scheme $A$. In each case we describe the dimension of the families of the polynomials with prescribed rank, each irreducible family being determined by the degrees of the connected components of the associated scheme $A$.

Logarithmic co-Higgs bundles

In this article we introduce a notion of logarithmic co-Higgs sheaves associated to a simple normal crossing divisor on a projective manifold, and show their existence with nilpotent co-Higgs fields for fixed ranks and second Chern classes. Then we deal with various moduli problems with logarithmic co-Higgs sheaves involved, such as coherent systems and holomorphic triples, specially over algebraic curves of low genus.

Compactifications of Adjoint Orbits and their Hodge Diamonds

A recent theorem of [GGSM1] showed that adjoint orbits of semisimple Lie algebras have the structure of symplectic Lefschetz fibrations. We investigate the behaviour of their fibrewise compactifications. Expressing adjoint orbits and fibres as affine varieties in their Lie algebra, we compactify them to projective varieties via homogenisation of the defining ideals. We find that their Hodge diamonds vary wildly according to the choice of homogenisation, and that extensions of the potential to the compactification must acquire degenerate singularities.

A uniqueness result on the decompositions of a bi-homogeneous polynomial

In the first part of this paper we give a precise description of all the minimal decompositions of any bi-homogeneous polynomial $p$ (i.e. a partially symmetric tensor of $S^{d_1}V_1\otimes S^{d_2}V_2$ where $V_1,V_2$ are two complex, finite dimensional vector spaces) if its rank with respect to the Segre-Veronese variety $S_{d_1,d_2}(V_1,V_2)$ is at most $\min \{d_1,d_2\}$. Such a polynomial may not have a unique minimal decomposition as $p=\sum_{i=1}^rλ_i p_i$ with $p_i\in S_{d_1,d_2}(V_1,V_2)$ and $λ_i$ coefficients, but we can show that there exist unique $p_1, \ldots , p_{r'}$, $p_{1}', \ldots , p_{r''}'\in S_{d_1,d_2}(V_1,V_2) $, two unique linear forms $l\in V_1^*$, $l'\in V_2^*$, and two unique bivariate polynomials $q\in S^{d_2}V_2^*$ and $q'\in S^{d_1}V_1^*$ such that either $p=\sum_{i=1}^{r'} λ_i p_i+l^{d_1}q $ or $ p= \sum_{i=1}^{r''}λ'_i p_i'+l'^{d_2}q'$, ($λ_i, λ'_i$ being appropriate coefficients). In the second part of the paper we focus on the tangential variety of the Segre-Veronese varieties. We compute the rank of their tensors (that is valid also in the case of Segre-Veronese of more factors) and we describe the structure of the decompositions of the elements in the tangential variety of the two-factors Segre-Veronese varieties.

A note on co-Higgs bundles

We show that for any ample line bundle on a smooth complex projective variety with nonnegative Kodaira dimension, the semistability of co-Higgs bundles of implies the semistability of bundles. Then we investigate the criterion for surface $X$ to have $H^0(T_X)=H^0(S^2T_X)=0$, which implies that any co-Higgs structure of rank two is nilpotent.
